Former Chiefs Kicker Justin Medlock Resurfaces

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a rough go round with kickers since Nick Lowery left the squad. One of the draft day disappointments, Justin Medlock, could be resurfacing with the Houston Texans.

Medlock recently worked out with the Texans, according to Adam Caplan of Scout.com.

Star-divide

Last we heard from Mr. Medlock, he was in the CFL (followed closely by AP reader Craig in Calgary) hitting 40/46 field goals - good for 87% - and all 22 of his extra point attempts.

Our pal Ryan over at KC Chiefs Blog also tells us that the Texans worked out another former Chiefs kicker - Dave Rayner.

"The Texans are the 9th NFL team for Rayner and 3rd for Medlock," Ryan writes. "After seeing both struggle during their short time in Kansas City, I can't figure the Texans will find much solace in either Rayner or Medlock."

Rayner played 10 games for the Chiefs in the 'Medlock year' of 2007.

The Texans' Kris Brown had his worst year statistically hitting just 21 of 32 field goal attempts.

Luckily, the Chiefs are done worrying about kicker problems for (hopefully) sometime. Ryan Succop had a heck of a rookie year and expects to improve moving forward.

Honestly

last year when we drafted Succop i thought “great another Medlock experiment” but i am genuinly impressed with Succop and hope he is here for years to come. Medlock on the other hand, i wish him the best, and good luck to whomever signs him because i am so glad he is gone from here!!!

medlock

I remember yelling at the screen why him mason crosby is still on the board.

Agreed

I live next to CU where Crosby kicked all those 50+ yd FG. I was almost in tears when we didn’t pick him. Another wasted Peterson pick is all I was thinking!

same here. it's nice to have a GM now who seems to pick people based on talent, and not what school they went to.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

glad it was not just me...At the Time Folk was a better option as well

I Loved Crosby so much, I have used him in fantasy EVERY season including his rookie year mid way through, and use him in madden fantasy drafts up to when they put succop in the game….

I will say Medlock was a huge headcase BUT….Succop seems like adam viniateri…mentally hes just so put together…I love it. I dont see a situation where the goal posts get smaller to him and he begins aiming…Also to have our new ST coach Hoffman in the same year as succop gives them a bond…I know personally the love Jason Hanson in Detroit had for his Coach, for drafting him and trusting him…now because of that coach, I will be rooting for the Saints Punt Team in the Super Bowl…Frank Gansz Died coaching over at SMU, his last project? happened to be the SAINTS ROOKIE PUNTER…out of respect for him, Go Saints this weekend, Sorry Peyton, or else I’d love to see a second win for him.

Medlock was more accurate than Crosby

Crosby had more distance than Medlock.

Tough choice to make…

Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl

Maybe its just a homer attitude

but I think KC has the best K/P duo in the NFL

Pretty close...

excluding 2 kickers that only kicked like 2 or 4 field goals this season so they had a 100% make percentage…

Ryan Succop would be 10th with a 86%

Dustin C. Net average was 40.8 wich put him 6th, but I would put him 5th b/c the #1 guy only kicked 9 balls this year.

I would say that Oakland would still be ahead of us since both Punter and Kicker are rated higher then our guys…. but no doubt we have the best YOUNG kicking unit. One other aspect I would consider is that Succop was 37th on average kickoff distance.

Hmmm...

I have Colquitts net at 41.2 good for 3rd in the league. Call me crazy but I would probably take Colquitt over Lechler because of other more important stats. Colquitts had 50% less returned punts, two times as many fair catches, 50% more punts inside the 20 and half as many(6%) of his punts going for touchbacks. Yes Lechler can boom it but the more times a returner has his hands on the ball the more pressure on your special teams especially when you are outkicking your coverage .

One more stat to consider...

I won’t say that Succop is better necesarily then any other kicker in the league but considering what he did as a rookie its pretty impressive. The one stat that’s most impressive is he was #1 in the league from inside 50 yards at a ridiculous 95.8% and it wasn’t something where he had far less attempts then everyone else as hes in the top 7 in attempts from that distance.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Feb 3, 2010 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

yeah I would say...

Lechler makes it tough, I prefer Colquitt’s style and putting people inside the 10…Succop has to prove he wont be a nick folk, but I think we are all confident in ryan succop…I am just glad to not have another goofy training camp kicker battle featuring the league’s most well known rejects

Best Kicker Kicker/Punter combos

The AFC West is pretty good on special teams…

Succop/Colquitt
Kaeding/Scifres
Janikowski/Lechler

You could argue that any of these teams have the best K/P combo in the NFL

by Aesthetist on Feb 3, 2010 9:47 AM CST reply actions

agreed, people take that for granted because its not a "sexy" position as they say.

We are all privilaged to see the great punters of the AFC West…and heck, even hating oakland, I can say Janikowski is fun to watch whether hes booting it out of the end zone, kicking a 61 yarder outdoors, or attempting to make a tackle on a return(classic).

I would have agreed pre playoffs with that

but if I’m in SD right now, I’d be worried about how mentally tough Kaeding is right now. I read the reports about Norv supporting him and pushing him to kick in the Pro Bowl. Then he hurts himself and admits he wasn’t mentally tough enough to deal with his misses in that game. That’s a tough thing to overcome. That alone would make me drop the Bolts team from that list. Kaeding may come back, but I’m glad we have Succop and not him.

Not too worried

He has the preseason next year to show he can make kicks in high pressure situations…

I gotta agree, I’m glad to have Succop. Nothing seems to faze him.

After watching old Chiefs games online

Thunderfoot deserves to be in the HOF. He even wore a man’s number and not some sissy single digit.

Well...

Here’s to hoping we can give our man Colquitt a break next year. We’ve been working the poor kid to death.

As for Succop? Let’s hope we can put him to work kicking tons of PAT’s.

More Succop…and a lot less Colquitt. That’s what I want to see.

Medlock deserves another chance and to be honest I'm surprised no one gave him one considering how many teams had kicker issues this year.

Medlock was an 86% FG kicker this year in the CFL on one of the worst teams in the league and was a pretty impressive 10-11 from 40-49 yards. He also showed some versatility handling the punting duties with a 43 yard/punt average.

At least we have a kicker

so if he pans out in Houston (DAMN YOU POLLARD) we don’t have to feel like crap
