Trade Up for Terrence Cody?

Terrence Cody weighed in this morning at the NFL Combine at 354 pounds, 16 pounds less than his anxiety-inducing weight of 370 at the Senior Bowl.

Given the explosion of 3-4 defenses in the NFL, the shortage of nose tackle prospects and the franchise tags applied to every UFA NT this week, the Chiefs and others are competing for a very small number of quality players at the nose.

With proof that he has the work ethic to drop that much weight in a short period of time, it seems hard to imagine that Mt. Cody will make it out of the first round, so what should the Chiefs do?

How do the Chiefs address their major need at nose tackle?
Use 5th pick in the first round to draft Dan Williams?

Ideally we trade back out of #5

and pick WIlliams or Cody later in the first along with another pick somewhere down the line.

I'm not sure that is proof of work ethic

He’s smart to do it and I do realize it’s a fairly short period of time. But, 16/370 = 4% body weight. I think he probably did it fairly easily.

yeah thats probably nothing but water weight for a guy that size

Im just not sure he has the work ethic to keep it off, sure hes smart enough to do it now before is interview process but will he stick with it for the long haul

by banshee_01 on Feb 27, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Trading up for him is a distinct possibility

That is, I wouldn’t rule it out of possibility, were I in charge. He’s the very definition of the guy you’d want controlling the line to open it up for the linebackers.

I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

No way do you trade up for Cody.

Spend that 5 on Suh(if qbs go 1-4), McClain or Haden, then go with BBears Pouncey, Spikes, Troup Theory.

Good for him for losing weight

It’s great that he lost weight for the combine.
But why in the world did he balloon to 370 lbs for the Senior Bowl in the first place.

It’s great that we learned he can lose weight in preparation for the biggest interview of his life. Will he keep that weight down once he’s secured a roster spot?

My guess is “no.” I wouldn’t trade up for him. I would even second-guess taking him in the early second round.

If Pioli’s trying to build a team around character/high work ethic players, this is not the guy.

by Jon Yoon on Feb 27, 2010 2:04 PM CST reply actions

He didn't balloon up for the Senior Bowl

He played at that weight in the season, including when he manhandled the Pouncey brothers in the SEC championship game.

I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

by burntorangehorn on Feb 27, 2010 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

If he played at that weight all season

then I think we should be encouraged by his athleticism. To move that much weight around effectively is…special.

by jakethesnake27 on Mar 1, 2010 8:15 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly

This kid has never displayed anything but a big heart and a positive, TEAM-FIRST attitude. He never even sniffed at getting in trouble while at Alabama, and believe me it is easy for a man that big to find trouble if he wants.

He worked hard and did everything that was asked of him. The coaches and other players love him. They were always showing Cody on the sideline during TV broadcasts with his arm around a teammate having fun and being positive.

Yes, he needs to get in better condition, and I believe that he will, whoever drafts him. And fat or not, when he puts the pads on he is a GREAT player and, from all accounts, a GREAT teammate.

by alakan81 on Feb 27, 2010 5:19 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

what does the tape say?

He can take up blockers and hold down the nt position.

I’m not sold on him but at 2a, or 2b – its not a huge contract.

LOL

I read he showed up at the combine at a weight of 254, now that is more like it.

For starters....

I don’t think Terrance Cody would be worth trading up for, and for second, I certainly don’t think he’s first round material. I think a team desperate enough might grab him in the second round, but, honestly, the guy’s weight issues along with his lack of speed don’t translate well to an NFL career. Trading up would be akin to us having traded up to grab JaMarcus Russell.

by BetterRedThanDead on Feb 28, 2010 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with j-man

I’m not a fan of cody at all, he’s soft and sloppy. He’s gonna always have weight problems. I don’t think he’ll be successful in the NFL at all.

by RamX21 on Feb 27, 2010 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Soft and sloppy?

How do you figure? Did you watch the guy play in the SEC, or just some film? And as for weight problems, see Ted and Jamal Williams.

NO NT is going to be solid muscle

That is just not the body type a 2 gap 3-4 NT has. Watch film, he holds the middle well and that is exactly what our defense needs.

I mean

what NT doesn’t have weight problems? Wilfork is fat as hell. That’s the idea. The bigger the are, the more blockers they can take up.

by wilson123 on Feb 27, 2010 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Bring in 2 NT

The best option would be to draft 2 and bring a veteran and rotate them because it is one of the most important positions on a 3-4 defense. 1st pick Eric Berry (if still on the board), 2A Best interior lineman on board (Pouncey?), 2B we take Cam Thomas, 3rd we take Torrell Troup, etc?…

by funfan on Feb 27, 2010 4:56 PM CST reply actions

WR

2A could also be a WR as long as we address OL needs in FA our interior line is bad and none of this Mike Goff bandaid bullshit

by funfan on Feb 27, 2010 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

He's the only "potential" 3-4 nose tackle

In the draft that has actually played the 3-4 nose tackle position.

Pioli talked about this in his press conference. Its a different type of role for a defensive lineman: you’re more a less being a blocker for your linebackers.

Not implying that none of the other guys can play NT, but it is something to consider when you just start throwing names out or saying “this guy can add 20 lbs and be a NT”. Just because a guy is big or strong, doesn’t make him a nose tackle.

by alakan81 on Feb 27, 2010 5:08 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Like Tank?

even though I wish we would have kept him. If last years draft we picked Raji and used Tank as a 3-4 DE this draft has several 3-4 DE’s

by BAMFSpecialOps on Feb 27, 2010 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

Just because...

he dropped some water weight doesn’t mean he is going to be on the field any longer. I don’t think Cody is a good fit and I don’t think Pioli will target him even if he drops to our early 2nd. I think Cam Thomas is the kind of player they are looking for. Its going to suck next year starting a rookie NT, we are going to have growing pains once again.

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09

by I_Bleed_Red. on Feb 27, 2010 7:16 PM CST reply actions

If Crennel and Pioli think Cody is "it" at NT

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us draft him at #5

by E.C. on Feb 28, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

We need to get Tate or Benn in the 2nd rd. That is a must.

And i would love to also have spikes so if we trade to get late into the first, i say use a third at most and anything else needed use next years picks. Because this is one of the strongest drafts in nfl history

by JC25FoMVP on Feb 28, 2010 11:05 AM CST reply actions

Golden Tate FLIES at Combine

Tate ran 4.36 today in the 40 at the combine.

He’s going to go in the 1st round so I think the Chiefs have no chance to get him at this point unless we trade down out of #5 with San Francisco to get their 2 first round picks and draft Dan Williams with the first one (#13) and Golden Tate with the second one (#17).

Only chance of that happening is if the 49’ers lust after Russell Okung and he’s still available when the Chiefs are on the clock (they’d move Joe Staley to RT)

by bbear200 on Feb 28, 2010 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

Seems crazy to me

To spend a 1st rd pick on a WR when we need interior o-line guys.W hy spend all that money on a WR at that point in the draft when we can wait and draft Shipley whom IMO would be starting right away, and for far less money.

by CPT.Caveman on Feb 28, 2010 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

You can pick up

great interior lineman starting in the 2nd. bbear’s trade idea only touched on the 1st round. You still have both 2nd round picks and the 3rd to look for high quality lineman.

Don't blame me, I voted for content of character.

by paratrooper on Feb 28, 2010 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

I guess i should say it different

I wouldn’t draft a WR with our first pick at all, i really don’t see any WR’s in this draft worth a 1st rounder. Do you guy’s really think he’s that good, because to be drafting a WR in the 1st round he better be damn good for years to come. I don’t see any #1 spot WR’s in this years draft. To me their all 2nd or 3rd string guy’s, and mostly just slot guy’s.

by CPT.Caveman on Feb 28, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

Dez Bryant will be very good

Maybe not the best case scenario to take him, or even a likely one, but I won’t be upset if we did.

We will get "atleast" one free agent weapon for Cassel. Our first two picks will not be sexy. We will draft two players I've not heard of.

by BJ Kissel on Mar 1, 2010 2:22 AM CST up reply actions

Then again, if we pick up Burleson or Walter for slot...

we could pass up on Benn or tate and try to get a NT and Spikes and wait for Shipley in the 3rd Rd.

Trade 2A, 4th rd, and next years 4th rd for the late first round.

So…
1st rd. Eric Berry,S
late 1st rd. Terrance Cody, DT
2nd rd. Brandon Spikes
3rd rd. Jordan Shipley, WR

^^^^^^
Chiefs off to the playoffs

by JC25FoMVP on Feb 28, 2010 11:15 AM CST reply actions

three picks to move up 5-10 spots? we've got a lot of needs.

i also doubt 4 rookies are going to send us to the playoffs in one year. not that it won’t happen but it won’t be because of the rookies. wouldn’t Shipley be a slot guy too?

by E.C. on Feb 28, 2010 11:24 AM CST up reply actions

J.Shipley is a slot WR

IMO the best in the draft, not only that but he is a PR/KR guy. If we could get Bolden, man would that help our offense. Bolden, Bowe, Shipley in the slot, and Chambers as a back up.

by CPT.Caveman on Feb 28, 2010 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

That sounds better but without Spikes

I think he is going to be terrible for who ever gets him, and a big waste of money. I don’t care who good a guy is if he has character problem’s, i don’t another peace of shite like Mr. 2.7.

by CPT.Caveman on Feb 28, 2010 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

E.C.....

1. In a spread offense Shipley could line from anywhere on the field.
2. If we add Sproles, Burleson, a solid center, and Daunta Robinson along with those draft picks, I would be extremely surprised if we werent the AFC west champs

by JC25FoMVP on Feb 28, 2010 11:58 AM CST reply actions

I don't think we need any of those guys if we draft right

But hey I’m just a Caveman. Even if we reached on our first pick, and drafted like this we would be fine.
1- T.Cody which i’m not say we should here.
2- M.Pouncey C
2b-V.Ducasse
3- J.Shipley

by CPT.Caveman on Feb 28, 2010 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

Take CODY please

The knock againest him at the senior bowl was that he was too fat and lazy and poor work ethic…….yeh im sure its pretty easy for a 370 pound man to lose 16 pounds but its also easy for him to gain 16 pounds so at least hes going in the right direction

I had a fanpost after everyone was bashing him on his weight at the senior bowl and said i would expect him to get down to 355-360 by the combine and compared him to wilfork coming out……I would say he in better shape coming out now then wilfork when he came out……i dont see pioli taking him at 5 but i think if hes there in the late 1st pioli could make a jump for him

by cassel4prez on Feb 28, 2010 4:10 PM CST reply actions

If he's there at 2a, and Pouncey is gone. Sounds good to me.

1. Are they an upgrade over what we already have?
2. Do they have high football IQ?
3. Can they make a difference from Day 1?
4. Do they have a history of leadership?
5. Sign him up.
