Chiefs Are Rumored To Be Interested In RB Darren Sproles
This is the type of news you'd like to wake up to, right?
Multiple reports have indicated that the San Diego Chargers will allow RB Darren Sproles to hit the open market. The problem comes from the franchise tag he received last year which means the Chargers would have to pay him 110% of that numbers (which is over $7 million).
According to the National Football Post, the Kansas City Chiefs are rumored to be interested in his services.
A league source told National Football Post that the Kansas City Chiefs are rumored to be interested in Sproles' versatile ability and return skills. Sproles, who played collegiately at Kansas State, could work in tandem there with Jamaal Charles.
Interesting.
The problem with this, in my mind, is that both Sproles and Charles are the same type of player. The assumption was that the Chiefs would be adding a bigger back to complement Charles.
But, hey, nothing wrong with lightning and lightning, right?

I would think they would use Sproles more in the Special teams department wouldn't you Joel?
He would help Jamaal for sure but I would think we want Jamaal nowhere near special teams anymore. Let Sproles finish off our already excellent special teams. Let Charles run the show.
Omg
This would be so freaking awesome!!!
To have two explosive guys like that as RB’s…wow! We would immediately have the best backfield in the NFL…imo.
We could call them Hurrican Charles and Twister Sproles…The Natural Disasters!!

Production is production.
The Chiefs are looking for football players. The rest will take care of itself.
When Sproles is in, Charles can be split out as a receiver. Fun!
I don't think it makes sense -
Just doesn’t seem to complement charles well (I’m looking for the 3rd and short bruiser). Legarrette in the sixth at a frac tion of the price. Hey if the chiefs are buyin’, I’m in though. Don’t think either the chiefs or sproles are looking for a special teams role player at that price
This does not prevent them
from adding a 3rd and short bruiser. You carry at least 3 RBs.

As someone pointed out a few days ago
Jackie Battle is more than capable to handle short yardage! Bring Sproels in. I’d b happy if that were our biggest FA addition. He’d spell Charles and give Cassel a great dump off guy.
by Larryemcdaniel on Feb 27, 2010 9:50 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
We have Castille and Javarris Williams as big bruisers along with Jackie Battle.
The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.

Hopefully if we do make such a move...
This will take pressure off the pass game, so we wouldn’t take away carries from Charles, but we would add some to sproles.
Jamaal Charles-230-250 carries, 40 pass targets
Darren Sproles-100-130 carries, 60 pass targets.
This will only upgrade the pass game. I would love this move
It helps the passing game
Sproles is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield.

yessir
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Actually
Sproles could line up in the slot some of the time. He is a sure handed receiver that could help as a safety valve. I just don’t think the Chiefs will pay the money that this guy will want. Somebody better get Chambers on the phone to him to tell him about the Chiefs upcoming superbowl apprearance. Whatever works.
Get him!
Sproles belongs in KC :)
I love the idea of having two fast running backs.
Talk about wearing a D down!
it is a very good move
if it happens. his hometown,he gets to stick it to the chargers twice a year, put this guy on our special teams and it should be one of the best in the league
Sign him
..Would be a great pick up to help Charles and also the return game….However if they lose out on Sproles I hope they go for Chester Taylor who isn`t as dynamic but for me is so underrated….
Depending on the situation with Chambers I`d like the Chiefs to go after Kevin Walter…I thought he did a good job at Houston when Johnson got injured….28 and 6ft3 I`m sure Cassel could do with someone like him

We need the big back.
Not a small scat back. Someone like Dixon from Mississippi State in the 3rd or 4th round.
You can have both.

i bet
He grew up a chiefs fan and would love to play for us. If we sign Sproles , resign chambers and upgrade the line. We COULD have one of the best offenses in the league with Weiss runnin the shit. I can’t wait till next Friday when FA starts I scheduled off of work that Friday just so I can stay informed with no distractions.

No thanks
With all of the needs we must address, I don’t see how much we can improve by signing a carbon copy of a player we already have at like 4 or 5 times the price. If/when we add another RB, he needs to be thunder. Sproles is great, but I don’t think he’s looking to play second fiddle at this point in his career.
I like the copy player idea
If one gets hurt you can still run the same plays as before. And we can alway find a power back if we need one but I don’t think that is all that important in todays NFL. So many times the plays that work in short yardage are misdirection plays anyway.
No no..he's right
Now we need a stupid, lazy QB to “compliment” Cassel.

two speed backs seems to work
pretty well in carolina with deangelo williams and (for the life of me i cant think of the other guy but he is fast). He filled in nicely when deangelo williams was hurt at the end of the year. i believe he had a 200+ yard game.
p.s jonathan stewart
Umm...I'll take a carbon copy
of the best player we have on offense. Having more versatile/fast players is never a bad thing. Besides that, what is the backup plan if Charles ever gets injured?
KC could get very createive with both of these guys on offense & special teams.
Predictions:
This year will be better
this would
take care of returns so why not?

Jeez
People whine and bitch about the Chiefs never spending money and going after “name” FAs. Then FA isn’t even open yet and we’re linked to a very very good player and people bitch. Nothing bad will come of this if it happens. Good football players = Good football teams.

Your logic is not welcome here Satch.
My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

agreed
I see no downside to this at all, plus it could make Charles even better from the competition of another good RB pushing him
Can't go wrong here
Charles doing the 2-down work, with Sproles spelling after long runs and doing some 3rd down work. Maybe some sets with both of them in there in a split-back set then splitting out wide in the slots? Just saying, there’s a lot of possibilities with those two in there.
And on top of that our return game becomes dangerous.
"The first step to penetration... must not be lateral"
-Confucius
He fits
Sproles would give us a desperately needed returner, depth in case Charles got injured, a quality runner to keep us from overusing Charles, and help in the passing game. He’s a playmaker, we need more of those.
Then we add Gerhardt in the draft for the power back we need.
by Offense of the 70s on Feb 27, 2010 9:18 AM CST reply actions
Exact same thought I was preparing to write
Sproles is a high caliber player. He would fill the Special Teams void we have suffered through for years plus add relief in the backfield and receiving. He doesn’t have to be an every down back, or compete with Charles, just provide explosive options. He would have to be accounted for at all times, so would cause the defense nightmares.
We should target Gerhardt if a third down bruiser is a need. Actually Kolby should be that back, but I’d like Gerhardt.
why should we use a pick on a power back
when we’ve go three of them on the team already? they should do for short yardage work, especially if we have sproles and that’s all they had to do
Because none of those 3 are really any good.

playmakers
the Chiefs need them & Sproles is one. He would need to be accounted for on EVERY down he’s on the field……2 HR threats in the backfield? Yes, Please!
exactly

Charles + Sproels + Battle =
success…with that combo we’d have a feature back, capable backup, viable screen threat, short yardage and goal line back, 3rd down back if needed, and a punt return/kick return guy. Adding Sproels fills a lot of holes. Please KC offer him a great deal and get it done.
by Larryemcdaniel on Feb 27, 2010 9:48 AM CST via mobile reply actions
Charles would not be happy.
Sproles will be offered 5 times the money Charles makes. At least until the Chiefs renew his contract.
Charles has to prove himself for an entire season. Once he does, he’ll get his pay day. Sproels is proven in many ways.
by Larryemcdaniel on Feb 27, 2010 10:04 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
could be an issue,
Sproles gets a big short term contract, Charles gets a bigger one when the time comes
A valid point
but this is an issue every time you sign a FA.

I personally think JC is humble enough to wait for his contract. Just personal opinion.

I actually think Sproles could work out of the slot aswell.
Charlie Weis would have some serious dangerous options.

Playmakers!
Spoles would be making more money BUT charles hasn’t proved himself for a complete season. Put them both in the backfield with a top 5 pick at offensive tackle and we may have a scary tandem for teams to deal with.
A playmaking KR also
Haley and Pioli have said numerous times about how important special teams are. It changes feild position etc. VERY UNDERATED POSITION. Instead of starting from our 20 were starting from our 27-35. BIg difference when you think about starting feild position of our opponets also after we go 3 and out on every offensive position.
Not to mention our PUNTER...
Should be able to pin them down with decent field position, which in turn help the defense. Thats if we have to punt….lol.
Pretty Awesome Thought
I can only imagine what Charlie Weis and Haley could come up with having a tadem set with Charles and Sproles in the backfield at the same time. I don’t think any team has two LB’s that could keep up with both out of the backfield. Mismatch everytime they hit the field.
Get him.
I had Sproles and C. Johnson on my fantasy team last year....
which we only start 2 RB’s, and get points for return yards. Let me assure you, he is up and down the field. He was easily over 100 total yards every week between the return yards, receiving yards (which he is deadly) and some rush yards. I can only pray, we get that sort of yardage monster on the team this year.
K-State!
He played for K-State when they beat Oklahoma for the big 12 championship game, that was awsome because Oklahoma was #1 that year
epic wins all around
if this happens……it changes the whole dynamic of the team in so many ways……& +1, 3188…..I hate the sooners
This Offensive...
could go from bad to great in a heart beat.
trade for Boldin
pick up Sproles
draft Tate
pick up Watson
Man crush on Eric Berry.
I dunno
I think there would be some conflict. u have Charles who impressed everyone last season, over 1000 yards in 9 or so starts, and is getting paid squat as the starter. you bring Sproles in and a commanding 6-7 mill a year. I can see the Chiefs screwing over Charles and sending him on his way, and making Sproles the starter. of course thats if they do in fact sign Sproles.
We need to draft Eric Berry, no if's / and's or buts about it!!!!
he's 5'8 a hundred and nothing pounds; don't think he could be a #1 back
he would bring more to the return and receiving games
5'8 and?
look at jags maurice jones-drew, 5-7 208, one running back that i would love to have. i can easily say that he is a power back, especially watching him put a lights out hit on shawn merriman a few years back. boy did i watch that hit over and over again. it was awesome. so i think size and weight have nothing to do w/ who is #1 back. its all in skill set. and who kisses pioli’s and haley’s ass.
We need to draft Eric Berry, no if's / and's or buts about it!!!!
now I see
why my charger friends loved charles and his age….Those same fans wanted to swap in charles for sproles…because they are similar but at the same time charles has a lot more ability
Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson=
as a kick returner great/3rd down back, but...I agree with nfamous in terms of charles V Sproles being an issue
Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.
KC Will Trade Derrick Johnson=
mismatch
It would be unbelievable.I get thoughts of miami. Not the wildcat but unsure of who to attack. Just having the two of them in the backfield would open up the passing game. Trade back and pick up an extra third rounder. Pick up cambell.cody with 2a Safety with 2b. Trade our third to az for boldin bc miami is offering that and ours is a higher third. Lb with new third rounder. Then we have charles and sproles in backfield. Bowe chambers and boldin as WR. We become instant offense. Who does the defense choose to cover?
by Chief of NY on Feb 27, 2010 11:31 AM CST via mobile reply actions
I think that I prefer having 2 backs that are alike
You dont have to use different blocking techniques depending on what back is in there. I don’t think we need a bruiser type guy. Example is Charles got better once LJ was gone. That is because the blockers prepared full time for blocking for JC instead of LJ.
not only would this be good for our team
but it would be good for our fan base. everyone in KC would love to have sproles come back. if it were up 2 me i’d create a 3 headed monster. Start JC, use sproles on mainly special teams but have him come in as well, and bring in a power back for short yardage
You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.
--- Any given sunday
Cassel can lead us.
Sproles + Chambers + Osgood
Would be awesome for Chargers week. Three guys who hate AJ Smith. But then, who doesn’t?
The path to Victory is made of losers.
