"If you don't have a good nose guard, you don't have a 3-4 defense," two-time Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley said at the NFL scouting combine in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Maybe we need to take note :)

“You can build everything else around it. You can have a great pass-rusher. You can have a great safety like Troy Polamalu. But if you don’t have a solid nose guard? You can’t run a 3-4. That’s the whole basis of the defense.”

Thanks Matt, Your working too hard !

Paging Ron Edwards to the checkout, Paging Ron Edwards to the checkout....

If we can’t find one in Free Agency then we need to find 1-2 in the draft (depending on the quality).

To be perfectly honest "Mad Mountain" Cody

and his “twin peaks” Are what the Chiefs need to Take at #5.

Dan Williams though more athletic is less of the Speed bump than Cody.

I think I'd prefer Thomas or Troup to Williams

Cody is my favorite… in the 2nd round

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

I did hear Cody was down around 355 at the combine...

so, his stock could be rising

I liked to...

see that in writing. I would be in a sauna 24/7 if I was Cody. He is so hard to peg as a player. I think we are looking at Cody vs. C Thomas as our NT options for next year. Either way we are going to have another year of growing pains, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09

Cody is not falling Pioli as much as said it

Too much need vs to little product.
And the 3rd round pick might be in play to get Troup now.

And the funniest part is

Cody might have two LSU tigers and a Florida gator up his ASS to make him a better Pro.

Well Pioli said

The one difference, I think, is the types of 3-4. It depends on how you play your 3-4 that has an impact on what type of nose you’re looking for.

Drafttec says if we grab Terrence Cody

1 1 St Louis Ndamukong Suh DT43 Nebraska P4Grab +0 Value
1 2 Detroit Gerald McCoy DT43 Oklahoma P1 -1 Reach
1 3 Tampa Bay Eric Berry FS Tennessee P4Grab +1 Value

still not a bad draft

I could see the logic… get the NT out of the way, focus on needs the rest of the draft

not bad, either...

I think Decker could be a great steal

This makes me sad

I don’t want to see another D-line reach, but just like last year’s pick, this one would probably prove to be REAL smart long-term

I love...

how Gerald McCoy is considered a reach at the 2nd spot. These rankings are little too arbritrary if you ask me.

A Sample

I do a lot of reading and research, utilizing NFL Draft Scout, Scout.com, Pro Football Weekly, ESPN, National Football Post, to name a few. I load the prospects into a massive Excel spreadsheet that seems to grow by geometric proportions and generate a macro-driven weighted ranking based on rankings from those publications.

I then take the "blended" Big Board and pull out my grading cards from games I have watched. As to my personal philosophy, I played and coached football (before I became old, fat and grey LOL!) and my grading is not just based on athletic prowess, but also how fundamentally sound the prospect is, basic techniques such as footwork, leverage, to get an idea of how coach-able they may be. Now, can you tell all that by just watching a game or two and not having access to observe practices – of course not, but it will give you an idea of how competitive the player is and whether or not they are a "gamer". I use this information as more of a "tie-breaker" or "massaging" the formula-driven Big Board.

I think he spends quite a bit of time for a decent ranking of the prospects :)

Ok...

maybe it isn’t so arbritray after all. Guy must have a lot of time on his hands.

Long Ball does a really good job, IMO. He knows his prospects and I value his opinion. I don’t always agree on prospects, but if we disagree, I go through it again to see if I made a mistake somewhere. Just wait till the second part of the interview, he has some interesting thoughts on lesser prospects.

LeCharles Bentley

Man, that guy was one of the NFL’s worst hard luck stories. Outstanding center, but his time in Cleveland ended his career. Torn patellar tendon followed by a staph infection (he was one of five Browns players who got staph). Glad he’s doing well for himself now.
