The Punt Returner/Fair Catcher...

As we all know Bobby Wade was the Chiefs punt returner in 2009 and man was he horrible.  Im going to take a look at how horrible and show what a good punt returner could do to help the team and who I think may help us.

Star-divide

Bobby Wades 2009 Punt Return Stats:

21 Returns for 160 yards. Averaging 7.6 YPR with 3 fumbles. And 19 Fair Catches

Yes you read that right. Wade fumbled 3 times in only 21 returns which is just ridiculous...One of them could of cost us the game against the Redskins. Thats not the stat the really stands out to me though.. 19 Fair catches. Are you kidding me? There is no way he couldnt of returned some of those balls and gave the offense some better field position. We need somebody that can get some yards for us and isnt scared to run the ball!

My Suggestion?

Nate Burleson

Today we found out that Burleson will be allowed to test the FA market and he has some credidentials in the return game that are a lot better than Wades and he also produces bigger from the WR position!

Heres why I think Burleson should take Wades spot on the roster.

2009 Punt Return Stats

30 Returns for 254 yards. Averaging 8.5 YPR. 1 Fumble. And 3 Fair Catches! Thats 17 less than Wade!

Career Punt Return Stats

156 Returns for 1,523 Yards. Averaging 9.8 YPR. 3 TDs. 6 Fumbles. 30 Fair Catches. 4 Returns of 40 + Yards.

1st player to return 3 separate punts for 90+ yards

Seahawks franchise record holder for punt return yards in a playoff game (84)

263 Career Receptions for 3,547 Yards and 27 TDs.

I know a lot of people are saying that we just want every player that is out there but in this case it is not true for me. Burleson has a lot of experience and has been successful at punt returns and produces more on the field than most of our WRs. I would be fine with cutting Wade to bring in Nate how about you?

I voted the 3rd option

I would like to see the team move on from Wade… it’d be nice to have SOME chance for a Punt Return.

However, I don’t think Burleson is the answer.
He’s always been an underachiever, other than one or two decent seasons, IMO.

I would like to see a rookie PR…. OR a veteran like:
Roscoe Parrish or Darren Sproles
Both could be available, and would be exciting to watch.

Otherwise, draft a guy who can play CB or WR and also return kicks… I like McCluster, McCourty, maybe Arenas, among others.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Mine too.....

Shipley Rocks!

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

The thing that bugs me about everyone's take on wade

is that everyone seems to forget what a solid slot receiver he was for us for most of the season. True, he sucked as a return man, and as a receiver his game did fall off as the year progressed, but damn! I sure was glad he was there for us on a number of occasions!

That one set the tone for the whole game.

Agreed.....

Not only is he garbage, but his attitude and arguing with Haley really made him a liability on this team.

Yup, that's why I voted yup.

Nate > Wade – Both = not very exciting

More of the same. Why in the hell would we want another below average kick returner?

Comeon people. This is what I’m talkin’ about. If your going to want someone , want someone great. Let’s get shipley.

It seems like the trend with great kick returners is that they have a 4 to 5 year maximum window where they get hot and make a name for themselves. Then they disappear.
In fact honestly, I do not hear much about Sproles anymore. He may have passed his window of being a supreme kick returner.

Shipley has not even had his start yet. I’d go young.

by krayfish on Feb 26, 2010 7:31 AM CST reply actions

Because below average would be an upgrade right now

Player Returns FC Yds/Ret Long TD
Darren Sproles 26 12 7.0 77 1

Not too much different than Wade there… In fact, 22 more total yards on Punt Returns.
However,

Sproles: 2,601 all purpose yards 8 TDs
Wade: 528 all purpose yards 2 TDs

Wade will NEVER be that kind of weapon so even if it’s just a small upgrade at PR I would be ecstatic to have him in KC. As far as Shipley goes, screw it… draft him w/ our 2b, give him Wade’s slot spot and let teams choose between the lesser of two evils when they are kicking the ball away. Just a thought…

Not a huge surprise, but I want sproles

I don’t know the stats and I’m not sure where to find this kind of a stat. But I’d like to see the net average per punt for Wade and Sproles, I would think that teams would be a little more afraid to kick to Sproles and angle-kick some away from him that would net a better average, even though they won’t all be return yards. Wade didn’t scare anybody.

by BJ Kissel on Feb 26, 2010 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

NOt good enough.

seriously that’s lame. That’s like saying your going to get rid of your 72 pinto with the wood paneling and get the neighbors Gremlin that’s up on blocks because it’s better than your pinto. Why not buy a New Lexus?

by krayfish on Feb 26, 2010 3:17 PM CST up reply actions

Damn Kray that Pinto was awesome

Drove it in the Ice storm of 80 from KC to DFW :)

Here's the thing

PR/KR is just like most positions in the NFL. It takes time to develop a guy. Dante wasn’t the X-Factor as a rookie. JC was terrible on KRs last year and only started to show signs this year before getting promoted to a better job. Cribbs was ok as a rookie, but not exactly the guy people now fear. Sproles was below average as a rookie.

We drafted Lawrence to be this guy for us. I say we give him a chance to grow into the role.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Feb 26, 2010 12:22 PM CST reply actions

you will probably catch some flack for this comment...

but I do agree with you…. Lawrence and, yes, even Long…
both have some ability as returners, and some speed/quickness.

They really need to learn to set up blockers, make smart decisions, and secure the football.

It’s entirely possible that we’ll see one of these current players be the KR/PR next season, even if someone is drafted that can play the role

no your both right stag. I mean we did draft these guys. And we have had a habit under the Carl regime

of not having the patience to bring young players up to speed and then letting them go on to be stars somewhere else. I agree. I keep forgetting about Lawrence actually. If he bulks up a little bit he could be a serious threat. We should work with him. We’re paying him. That’s all valid points you and satch are making.

Would you guys like Michael spurlock?

He’s dead weight behind Stroughter/Smith and he is still pretty good.

When it comes to Eric Berry, Tennessee fans have seen and heard it all. He's known as "The Fifth Dimension". "Two-thirds of the planet is covered by water; the rest is covered by Eric Berry." The Tennessee "Minister of Defense". Besides Chuck Norris, who is the only guy to crash into Tim Tebow head-to-head and live to tell about it? Eric Berry.

This guy He thrives in special teams and is a WR. Compliments.

hmm... a kickoff and a punt for a TD

that’s a start

not much of a WR, though…

I still like Osgood… as a ST gunner who actually should be able to play WR

I agree with jclawd

1. cut Wade.
2.re-sign Chambers
3.sign a Kevin Walter
4.draft Arrelious Benn, Gilyard, Shipley, or Tate.

And sort out the tight end position during Training camp
