Quick Hits from Russell Okung's Combine Press Conference
With all of the talk about the Chiefs and Russell Okung, I thought it appropriate to post a few quick highlights from his recent press conference (as in, two minutes ago) here at the NFL Combine. No huge quotes here, but some humorous responses for sure. Responses below after the jump:
On being interviewed by every team in the NFL and facing constant questions:You just have to be honest and be up front. I don't have anything to lie about. If you're this type of player, then you're this type of player. I don't have anything to hide.
On being considered among other top tackles in the draft class:
I don't want to shy away from any competition. Ultimately, it's not up to me. I'm just lucky to be here and just feel blessed to be in front of you all.
On what type of situation is most comfortable for him:
We ran a lot of zone blocking in college, so that's where I'm most comfortable. But I can play whatever is needed. I'm not worried about it.
On his current weight and playing weight:
I'm at 307 right now and I plan to play at 310.
On which teams he's spoken to at this point, including Redskins or Chiefs:
I haven't really spoken to too many people at this point. And you can't always go by what you hear.
On what the definition of a franchise tackle is:
A franchise player is the cornerstone of a team. Someone that you can count on.
On what his favorite part of the job is:
Whatever coach tells me to do, that's what I like to do.
On his role:
I've always been an unsung hero. I'm just used to that. I don't need to be the number one guy. I'm just glad to walk through the door.

Interesting
He knows the ZB scheme….thats a start.
I guess I would be ok with this guy. I wouldnt approve of drafting him ahead of others but I would be ok with it.

i will only be unhappy if we take a qb
Everyone else that gets discussed would help.

For Me
I’ll be upset if we take another Def End.

agreed
no DE, no QB…prefer no OT, but I’d get over it
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB
Agreed.

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Cassel can lead us.
That and he seems to be pretty damn smart.
Gotta like his answer about “whatever coach tells me to do is what I like to do”
And it is a plus that he actually seems to be BELOW his playing weight! That seems to be amazing from everything else that we gett to hear about most of our Chiefs being above the “fat” line
Oh yeah, I have my preferences
But I know whoever we get at 5 will be a stud

gotta laugh
I think a lot of his answers especially the “coach tells me..” remind me of the Bull Durham scene about learning your cliches!
Air Cassel - approved for takeoff

True
But that is exactly what people want to hear.
It is amazing the number of kids that roll through and just are flat out stupid when it comes to answers. But then again I guess that is why there isOakland.

Nobody is guaranteed to succeed
Virtually anyone can fail in the NFL, including all the top names in the draft. It is ALWAYS a gamble to keep and use a spot high in the draft. What we do know is that Dorsey is a good player, an excellent run-stuffer, young, and improving with each game. IMO, it is INSANE to trade away someone like that for an a pick that, in the final analysis, will be an unknown. The front office has said over and over who their core players are. Dorsey is among them. If we had a solid roster in contention for a playoff spot, we could afford a gamble to get a star. But we cannot afford that. We have too many holes to fill. You keep people you KNOW are good and who you have spent two years invested in coaching up, and draft for people who are LIKELY to be good. That is what Pioli must do, because there are too many spots needing good players. Later on, we can take a chance at giving up a good player to get a potential star. But not now. I am not saying that Pioli will not trade Dorsey for a different draft position, if it is in our overwhelming interests, but that is not the formula he is relying on at this point in time. If he uses a good player to get more choices, I am guessing it will be DJ and maybe Bowe.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

I wouldn't mind if we took Okung, and I wouldn't mind if we took Bradford
I’d pass of Clausen, as in trade down if somebody else wants him.

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Good Thing I Read the Entire Thread...
I was going to say the same thing, Upam. This guy seems like he would fit in nicely. I’m all about shoring up our defense, but a solid offensive lineman will put our offense one step closer to competing in every ball game, not just random weeks…
Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:
1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

Wonder what his answer would be to playing RT?
Whatever coach tells me to do, that’s what I like to do.
Coach you want me to play at 298?
