Offense: Player Expectations and Improvments

Hello AP! I'm not a usual poster but more of a commenter but I'm gonna throw one out there.

I haven't really seen this type of post, atleast not in a while so I'll give it a go and diverge from all the draft talk. After the jump which players will be the most improved and what to expect from the majority of the players. Generally, I'm just going to take a look at the starters and stars. First we'll take a look at the offensive side of the ball. I'll create another post later for the defensive side of the ball. Let's take a look on offense.

Star-divide

Let's start off with the QBs

Improvements

Well generally, there wasn't much to cheer about in the QB department last year. Croyle did good enough for his time thrown in finishing games or his week 1 game against baltimore. Cassel did as good as he could without protection or receivers. His game improved after the emergence of Jamaal Charles.

Expectations

I think we all expect Cassel to be much improved next year and hopefully a 3,000-3,200+ yd season from him and a few less INTs and more TDs would be helpful. A better group of receivers and improved line look for Cassel to strengthen in his Sophomore year with the Chiefs.

RBs

Improvements

Well, Jamaal Charles. Need I say more? After letting go of LJ the running game took a huge jump, and in a good direction. JC re-energized our franchise and our team. The first RB to do the thing he did starting so late in the season and amass over 1,000 yards. He is the bright spot on our team and will be here for years to come.

Expectations

I believe we can expect an even better season from JC himself. With a better line, defense, what looks to be an easier schedule and a full season, he should put up even more impressive numbers. I don't want to expect too much but he has, as a RB, the easiest schedule for any RB. If he can have several big games it'd be nice to see him push 2,000, but for now let's just not get ahead of our selves.

FBs

Improvements

Cox and Castille were the FBs of last season, with Castille having a nice 20-yd TD catch against the Bengals and Cox with a 1-yd TD rush against the Broncos. I haven't really payed much attention to them but I would say they did ok. Could use some improvement.

Expectations

As for expectations I hope for just solid consistant blocking and catching in the backfield. I'm expecting Cox and Castille to split time if both stay. Not much for this group.

TEs

Improvements

Well trying to replace the future HOFer, record breaker, and probably the best TE to ever play this game is pretty damn hard. So I wasn't expecting much but Pope looked good at times as well as Cottam. Tough to play the position previously manned by an all time great.

Expectations

Here I'll just hope for consistancy and more improvement from this past year. That's all I could ask for after Tony Gonzalez left. Trying to replace was going to be, and is, impossible to replace. Let's just see an improvement and consistancy.

WRs

Improvements

The addition of Chris Chambers gave our franchise and team a boost. He immediately stepped in and stepped up. He became our no.1 target after Bowe's incident. Look for Pioli (please) to resign him to a deal for a couple years. Dwayne Bowe statistically had a drop. Him, along with the rest of the team had a case of dropitis. They all need to check and work on hands this offseason. Bowe will benefit from (barring any suspensions) a new year, new team, and coaches. Look for him to jump back and improve, although he is not a true no.1

Expectations

Look for Chambers to continue to do what he did last year if he resigns. He should continue to be a good option at no.2 depending on the draft otherwise he could slip to no.3. Bowe should have another 1,000 yard season with some TDs along the way.

LTs

Improvements

Branden Albert had a decline in his sophomore year, hopefully its just the "sophomore" year slump. He still had respectable stats but not as good from his rookie year. With better coaching I'm hoping he will improve and be a lot better. I have opinions in what we could do in draft but I said i wanted to get away from that so I won't.

Expectations

Hopefully Albert will improve with new and improved coaching and getting better at his job whether LT or LG. Hoping he can become one of the premier elite olineman in the league. That would be nice.

LGs

Improvements

Here we have an aging but NFL Walter Peyton Man of the Year award in Brian Waters. Decline comes with age so thats usual but he still holds his own and can stand with the best. He probably has 2-3 years more left in the tank I'm hoping.

Expectations

Just hoping for the same Brian Waters still there doing his job just awaiting his time before he retires. He'll still put out and get his job done and help and mentor the young guys. Maybe another Man of the Year Award too? Well we'll have to wait and see.

C

Improvements

Not gonna say much here. Just bad center performance for most the year. Niswanger can't be our future long-term option, it's obvious he isn't a starter in this league. We need to improve this position and get better.

Expectations

Just need to improve here and get a better player here. Hopefully a long term player either draft or free agency which ever will serve the best. One of our top needs this year. Looking for solid performance and serviceable wether free agency or draft.

RG

Improvements

To be honest I'm not real sure who held this spot after Goff went down, and he wasn't even that great. This spot was a revolving door. Wade Smith was decent this could be upgraded probably through draft.

Expectations

This probably real similar to center expectations. Just need a solid performance if we dont find long-term resolution. Establishing the oline is a key to overall improvement.

RT

Improvements

Good-bye Sacintosh. Our line improved quickly once we got rid of him. On the flip side, it got better with the addition of Ryan O'Callaghan. He was good for his time filling in at RT since he took over the job. Looking for him to keep it and get better. He was solid this year.

Expectations

Again, expect for him to keep it and get better. He is our long-term solution at this spot and rightfully so, he deserves it. He's done a tremendous job since taking it and should keep it and develop to hopefully one of the better RTs in the league.

K

Improvements

Ryan Succop. Mr. Irrelevant. No. 256. Who's that guy? Oh yea the Chiefs rookie of the year. He for the most part broke rookie kicking records and took them from our very own Jan Stenerud. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come.

Expectations

Look for Mr Ir--- Mr. Relevant to improve and build on his impressive rookie season. He had a tremendous year and he will continue to get better and soon become one of the league's best kickers. As long as he doesn't have any games like you know who. Or like Mr. Nate Kaeding of the SD Chargers did in the playoffs against the Jets. Succop one of the very brightest spots on our team from last year's draft class. All with the very last pick of the draft, no. 256. Known as Mr. Irrelevant. Thank you Ryan Succop for not being so, but being Mr Relevant.

I will do the defense side of the ball in another post.

good post, nice change of pace

take a break from draft and FA speculation, revisit the roster again…

I honestly think there’s a good chance that SEVERAL of these guys will get significantly better next year with better coaching and more experience in the system.

I’m excited to see what this team can do, with a few key additions, and the development of some good players on the roster already.

I still see Wade Smith as the “utility” guy… not a starter. I’m looking forward to seeing Colin Brown, Ndukwe, Alleman and others battling it out for the starting RG spot in 2010.

WR will be VERY intersting as well… i think KC will certainly bring in a couple of guys… but, there are some interesting stories on the roster… I still think Haley has plans for Lawrence and Long… will be interesting to see if they can develop.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Agreed

Good post Nate! Appropriate just before looking at a bunch of college hopefuls this weekend and who might fit in. If you can, do that post on the defense before the combine starts. ;)

The only thing I’d add is at the TE position. I think we have a couple of decent guys who can catch. Cut the fat and bring in someone who is a big’ol badass blocking specialist. Please for the love of God get a blocking TE.

WRs

I think this is one spot that could potentially make or break our success next year. If they go back to the same tactis as this year we could be in for trouble. If they improve and catch thoses flying brown pigskins then we will be better off.

I was really unsure of RG because there wasnt a lot of stability that I saw so I just picked one. I think coaching all across the board alone could help improve a lot of our players, and thats just to start. In about another year or so we could start seeing very good things.

I'm excited that we have two new coordinators...

that know how to get the best out of their players.

I think we will see more of the same initially. Even with guys out of college that can come in here

and make a difference immediately, their still college rookies. So I think adapting to NFL life and new schemes and philosiphies will take it’s toll for the first half of the season.
I expect to see a bland first half and a much improved second half.

I think our first half will be slightly better than last seasons first half, but not by much. Now that we have Charles, it can’t be worse. It should improve. But there will be a lot of change in KC again. And new coaches bring new ideas and ways of doing things with them. So even guys like Dorsey make take a step back before they step forward again.
Not guaranteed. But I expected the same thing last season and it happened just like that.

Don’t be suprised. Pioli doesn’t do anything you expect. I have no idea who he’s going to draft at all. Or trade or FA for. Just be preparred for a few surprises. Good ones. And just be patient and don’t expect too much. It’s almost like a second first year all over again.

I hear ya

but, I’m hoping they can at least make the first half of 2010 look like the 2nd half of 2009, and improve from there… small steps forward from a new “baseline”

the first half of 2009 was like training camp, for coaches and players, I think it would be a problem if it were repeated

Or

It would be nice to see a 1st half season of 2010 like the final game of last season :)

or it would also be nice to see the 1st half of this next season start out like

we finishe dour last season. I don’t know why you or stag didn’t say that but……(-;

Great post

I am pretty excited about next year. I expect the biggest improvement from Bowe and Cassel.

As a side note – wasn’t there a post that someone made a month ago or so that showed Cassel actually performed worse after JC was unleashed?

If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

To some extent

Statistically yes, because we used Charles more so he was used less and our receiver already had the drops so it didnt help anyhow.

I will post the defense side after the weekend.

Because the combine is overwhelming already and I won’t be here on saturday for a competition 2hrs away. But look for it after this weekend.
