Chiefs Release G Mike Goff; Re-Sign QB Matt Gutierrez, RB Kolby Smith

Just last week I wondered if it was one and done for Mike Goff in Kansas City. Turns out, I was right.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced today that they have released guard Mike Goff.

Goff, 34, was signed last offseason to shore up the offensive line but it was fairly apparent that he's lost some of his skills. He was placed on IR midway through the season.

The Chiefs also re-signed QB Matt Gutierrez and RB Kolby Smith.

I would guess Gutierrez received fourth year minimum considering he's the third quarterback.

Bringing back Smith is questionable, I must say. He has a career average of 3.3 yards per carry and has missed large portions of the last two seasons with injury problems.

Both players came into the league in 2007 and were not eligible for unrestricted free agency.

Does this answer the question "will the Cheifs draft a late round qb?"

Or will the announce cutting Cassel tomorrow? (kidding)

Or does this mean something in reguards to Croyle?

by Boots 58 on Feb 24, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

Means nothing

Just the third QB…probably got the minimum.

Yup

They’ll bring 4 to camp. The lock up the #3 guy and find someone…somewhere to compete for the spot.

good news... somewhat

glad Goff-er is gone

Guti is a capable backup, so welcome back

Smith might still be cut at some point… Haley said if you can’t stay on the field, you can’t help the team

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

I had this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach

I didn’t want to mention it on here… but a small part of me worried that they would bring Goff back as a starter when he was healthy again

I’m glad it was unfounded

I've seen nothing from these guys

that makes me worry they’ll get married to a player who doesn’t produce.

Except Mike Brown.

Exactly I agree Satch

Smith did nothing to earn a chance in coming back this season all he did was hurt his chances is what I thought…He was out most of the season and when he did play he was horrible

Smith is just a cheap guy who knows the system

training camp fodder…if he makes it that far

I'm contrary on RBs. I defend them when they're behind sucky lines and I don't gush over 'em when they play behind great lines.

Smith played behind a sucky line. His price is right and he has some talent. Rather keep him than break the bank on a man-love candidate. Give him another shot. Definitely going to be on the bubble, though.

Speaking of Married

Can’t we just bring back Wiegmann’s wife instead? She has the right ………. attitude.

by stenerud's roost on Feb 24, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

I had the same worry, because it was irrational that he was starting after his performance in the preseason, and the 1st couple of games. Alleman, Indukwe, Wade, ANYONE should have replaced him early on, and the fact that they waited until he went down with injury was alarming. Now they just have to make sure Mike Brown isn’t starting, and they don’t sign wastes like this in the offseason again, and learned something from it.

by dablueguy on Feb 24, 2010 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

They can sign guys like this all they want.

Who knows when one of them will turn into our Rodney Harrison or Junior Seau or Chris Chambers….

What matters is that they’re willing to cut ties as soon as it doesn’t work out. That was the mistake CP always made with FAs. He gave guys like this multi year deals then stubornly stuck with them to prove he was right.

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Feb 24, 2010 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

Good points. I just want to sign guys like this and deem them starters, like they did with Goff and Brown, and then not yank them when they suck.

by dablueguy on Feb 24, 2010 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

In fairness

I don’t think there was any intention of Brown being the starter. Pollard freaked out and got himself cut…Page got injured. Brown just kinda worked out that way.

Goff is a little more concerning howver, was signed for a different blocking scheme. He didn’t fit the ZB at all. And it’s not like he was keeping some stud on the bench. All of our RGs sucked…

This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

by KCSatchmo on Feb 24, 2010 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

when Did we start ZB in pre-season or just after Haley took over as OC?

Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....

OH HAPPY DAY!

No Goff, Cheap Backup QB, and a presumably cheap backup RB… I have no problem with any of these moves, and if for some reason we pick up another RB or we change our mind Im sure there is a very small portion (if any) of Kolby Smiths contract that is guaranteed. He must be showing something if he keeps getting shots despite his mile long injury report…

Sidenote… If Brian Westbrook could be gotten at a reasonable price I wouldn’t mind seeing him in red… Granted he isn’t going to carry much of a load, and he isn’t going to play in all 16 games, but if the price is right I see him being able to contribute a fair amount and provide a wisdom in the locker room

he has good hands out of the backfield does Westbrook

i just dont know if signing him knowing that he wont play all 16+ games is the right move.

Good Move

letting Goff go. He was garbage. I think this will Colby Smiths last chance with us. If he gets hurt again for an extended period of time or just stinks it up he will be gone. I would like to see a better back up QB though.

Why did the Chiefs wait so long to cut Goff?

They were waiting for him to get out of his 3 point stance on that field goal attempt.

Team Canada's problem?

The Executive Directors for the past 3 Olympics are retired Superstars (Gretzky and Yzerman) who pick players from when they were still playing. Marty Brodeur, Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermeyer for example were very good players when Yzerman and Gretzky were playing but they aren’t as dominant anymore. I honestly think Canada wins the game vs USA with Luongo in net. Now in all probability the Canadians will lose to the Russians who are fresher from not having to play a qualifier and they are younger. I would LOVE to see a USA/Canada final (especially since I will be in San Diego at the time) but Russia is going to be tough tonight.

neither should qualifiy for PS

Guit is entrenched as the #3 QB for now, unless they draft someone better

Kolby could easily get cut before the season starts

Remember when he never even lifted his head while a Cowboy jumped over him to block a FG?

Those were the days….

I feel almost as good as I did when we released Sackintosh.

Kolby Smith won't be on the team come the first game.

I’ve been rootin’ for him as he came out of Louisville, but he has had naging injuries ever since his knee injury in college.

I understand that he had surgery by one of the best surgeons, and maybe his knee is solid. I believe that he will get nicked up somehow in the offseason.

I hope for the best for him, but I’m very doubtful of what he can do at an NFL level.

Go Chiefs!!!!

by ravenhawk on Feb 24, 2010 5:52 PM CST reply actions

The NFL

Needs a minor league system. Just like an 8 team small league for players like Kolby.

Rookies, Players coming off injuries, and older veterans could have a place to play before the NFL teams needed them. Could also help undrafted guys get in the NFL.
