Don't Forget Chiefs Connection To Ferentz, OT Bulaga

NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock spoke to reporters on a conference call this afternoon (which I missed because of the real job) and indicated that the Kansas City Chiefs going with Iowa's OT Bryan Bulaga with the 5th pick isn't necessarily out of the picture because of the connections involved.

Star-divide

"Bulaga to me is going to be one of the four offensive tackles that could possibly go in the first nine picks," Mayock said. "If you think about Scott Pioli, the GM of the Kansas City Chiefs, is a good friend and admirer of (Iowa Coach) Kirk Ferentz.

"He loves the type of technician that Kirk develops with offensive linemen. So it wouldn't surprise me if he went as early as No. 5 to Kansas City."

From what I've read, No. 5 overall is a stretch for Bulaga but it's important to note the connection with Pioli and Ferentz. If you'll remember, Ferentz was a hot name around Kansas City last year when the Chiefs were in the middle of their coaching search.

Also, keep in mind last year at this time Tyson Jackson wasn't perceived as an option with the third overall pick so the thinking with a lot of folks is to expect the unexpected.

Bulaga is possibly an option

if we trade back a little way or if he dropped to the second round miraculously. There are several other Iowa prospects in the draft such as Tony Moeaki (TE), Amari Spievey (CB), A.J. Edds (LB), Kyle Calloway (RT), and Pat Angerer (ILB) that fit the connection. I could honestly see any of these guys being picked by the Chiefs as they all fit needs. I would like to see Calloway or Angerer especially.

Mayock is saying

Bulaga at #5.

I agree though, I wouldn’t take him with anything higher than the 15th pick.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

Hopefully we won't have to.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

I would love Moeaki to be a chief

He has injury problems, but he was outstanding for the hawks last year. I wouldn’t mind adding Dace Richardson (OL) to your list of potential hawkeyes to look at. He also had injury issues at Iowa, but was a big part of the running success at Iowa in 09. You can’t go wrong with a name like Angerer.

by Andypants on Feb 23, 2010 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

definitely

moeaki was super hyped, but has injury problems…if he falls in later rounds, he could honestly be a low risk-high reward type player

i'm starting to hope that

every OT prospect breaks his leg just so i don’t have to hear about an OT with the #5 pick

BINGO. REC!!!!! The Chiefs taking an OT at #5 would be the stupidest pick imaginable.

Taking a 3-4 DE with 1st and 3rd picks seemed stupid too

This year it would be, since we have it filled, like we do LT. Last year taking 3-4 DE’s was a good move, since we had none who played it.

Are we sure we have a RT and I know we have no depth at either Tackle

O’Callaghan played fine at RT, Depth is always good, and if we draft an OT in the late rounds, that would be OK, but certainly not at #5, or even in the first 3 rounds. Unless that Tackle is projected to play Guard in the NFL. Than you can pick him in round 2 or later.

i think

Bulaga will probably go to the Broncos at 4. They desperately need a tackle and he fits the mold of zone blockers that Shanahan likes.

yep...just announced

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

Re

Props must me given the KF in Iowa City, he does really well with O-lineman. Bulaga has an injury history so a lot of this senario depends on how he shows in the physical at the combine.

by tenacious rdc on Feb 23, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions

his ‘injury history’ was only a thyroid condition.

but he isn’t that great.

and just for a reference point, before we all drool over a KF coached lineman (I love KF and went to Iowa) let’s remember this name: #2 (?) overall LT out of Iowa, Robert Gallery. guess who is now playing LG?

yes, the connection is there, but the need isn’t.

people might make the connection to ‘reaching’ for someone not on the radar, but DE was apparently the perceived greatest need (takes D linemen couple years to develop). LT isn’t a need, and doesn’t take 2-3 years to develop.

Robert Gallery plays LG because it is his natural position. ( ;

I would rush to gallery comparisons

Gallery was a dominant athletic freak at LT for the hawks…but who can blame his ruination on Ferentz? He was drafted by Oakland!…I would not wish such a fate on my worst enemy.

I don't think we take a T at #5

But if we drop a few spots it might happen. Check out this link on him. This guy is my pick of the tackles in this draft.

I don't nesscesarily agree

His run blocking was what looked good. He made Georgia Tech’s “top five” defensive end his whipping boy in the Orange Bowl, especially on the final drive where we ran three straight plays off left tackle and scored the touchdown that sealed the game.

He struggled mightly against Schoffield and Graham though, to be fair, he was just coming off surgery in those games.

by KC_HAWKEYE on Feb 23, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

He said that it took him awhile to get back in the groove

after his surgery. From what I saw, the kid is awesome. His footwork is great and he uses his hands to great advantage. I’m not an expert on this guy but he’ll be a starter at LT and make some team very happy for years to come. I’d put money on that.

On Bulaga

I am a Hawkeye fan but as much as I like Bulaga I think taking him here would be a bad deal all around. Bulaga is really good but he will be a guard if he starts next year, RT at best, and really, his best option is to get drafted by someone like the Colts where he could be a ackup for a year and then step in and be a left tackle. Going somewhere like Kansas City, where there is little to no real depth on the offensive line, would be a mistake for both parties since Bulaga would never reach his full potential in that situation.

I am all for Eric Berry or trading down with that first pick. No one else is really worth picking at no. 5 and if Berry is still on the board (which I bet he is) I think he is the best option. I think offensive line is a huge priority but this draft is really middle heavy and guys like Kyle Calloway (the RT at Iowa who would be a guy you could plug in pretty much wherever) or Ciron Black (the LT out of LSU) will probably be available late in the second round or early in the third round. The guys at Tackle who sit at the top of this draft really don’t excite me and nobody really looks like an upgrade from Brandon Albert at LT.

I think KC drafts defense firt, take Berry at no. 5 and pick up Terrance Cody with the first second rounder (his weight issues should make him fall and if he is available he would be a risky, but potentially heavily rewarding NT). Don’t even start thinking about lineman until the third pick.

In case yo uare wondering, guys who could go to the Chiefs from Iowa:
Kyle Calloway (RT): I like Ciron black more just because I think Black would be the better RT, but Calloway could play either guard position better than Black and he is a very talented guy who haley could move around on the line.
Amari Spievey (CB): He is actually going to be a safety. He doesn’t really have the top end speed o be a corner in the NFL but nobody threw to his side of the field (if they could help it) this year and he still put up some solid numbers. He was the best shutdown corner so he could play man as a safety (they will draw easier assignments in man coverage than the corners) and he was great in run support. He would compliment Berry well but it depends on how much Pioli wants skill guys.
Pat Angerer (ILB): he is a little undersied but he should be there for he last pick the Chiefs have. He is quick, does not miss tackles, and can play man decently and zone well. I wouldn’t take him unless he was there for the last pick but if he was I would consider it as a possibility.

Nice Comment Hawkeye...

I’m in Iowa as well and I have to say that Bulaga doesn’t have the killer instinct you want out of a Left Tackle, although he did stonewall Morgan from GT in the Orange bowl. You also forgot AJ Edds who would be a good cover linebacker.

by WesternChief on Feb 23, 2010 5:51 PM CST up reply actions

Well

Bulaga has a hell of a mean streak, he steamrolls guys in the running game and he hits harder with his hands than alot of tackles currently in the NFL. The problem is his lateral movement, it isn’t terrible, but it isn’t great, and that is a huge problem. As I said before, I really think this is not the draft where you will grab a Joe Thomas or Jake Long, someone who is a surefire stud LT, and while I certainly don’t think Albert is the answer long term, I think the Chiefs will be better served upgrading at RT and guard this season

I don’t like Edds as much because I don’t think he will be available as late as Pat will. Edds will really have to fall for the Chiefs to grab him.

at the 5th pick

i’m not wanting anyone else but okung, mcclain, or berry

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.
