Greatest Sports Movies and Why?

I was watching the Miracle on Ice stuff NBC was running last night and it reminded me of the move Miracle with Kurt Russell, which has kind of fall off the radar but I think is one of the best sports movies in the last 10 or so years.  One of the things I like about it is it avoids a lot of sports movie cliches.  Yes it still revolves around winning the big game, but it's more a character study of US coach Herb Brooks and how Brooks was able to take a bunch of college kids and turn them into gold medal winners against an unbeatable Soviet team.  Brooks' plan was to create team cohesion by uniting his team in their total and outright hatred for him.  Brooks made Todd Haley look like Mother Theresa.  And it all worked.  The really interesting part is Brooks was not able to really share in the victory with his team because he had so completely alienated himself from them as part of his plan.  There's a great scene after they win the gold and Brooks goes out into a hallway in the arena and celebrates the win alone.  Kurt Russell is great in it, I really think he's one of our really under appreciated actors.  Hell, he was Stuntman Mike!

So do you think are some of the best sports movies and (this is the most important part) why do you think they are great?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Sunday Night Lights and Any Given Sunday are my favourite Football movies

Field of Dreams is my favourite baseball movie.
Happy Gilmour is my favourite golf/hockey movie.

However this is the best scene from any football movie

I'm assuming you mean Friday Night Lights.

Have you seen the TV series based on it. The TV show is lightyears better than the movie. And I liked the movie. The show is awesome. Also, the book it’s based on is one of the best sports books ever.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Haha

Oops. I meant Friday night Lights.

I was totally going to watch Friday Night Lights because I liked the movie, but I was sure it was going to be one of those midseason replacements and I hate getting into a show, and it be cancelled by Christmas. I was wrong. Instead I started watching some bullshit like The Book of Daniel

Get the DVDs or Netflix them.

Season four starts on NBC in April and they are for sure doing a fifth season after that. It’s definitely worth your time.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

by Rev. Slappy on Feb 23, 2010 1:43 AM CST up reply actions

Season 4 is coming to NBC?!

I’m happy, you just made my day =) I watched all three seasons on netflix.

Spoilers***dont read ahead

One thing I’m confused about though. The transition between the second and third season. Smash apparently tears his ACL in the championship game? What happens to Sergio?

Netflix put the seasons up with Season three first, then one and two, so I started watching season three. Maybe it was mentioned, maybe not, I can’t remember.

by SoCalChief17 on Feb 23, 2010 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

Season 2 was cut short due to the writers' strike.

Basically the second season doesn’t end and they just start season 3 filling the audience in on what happened that wasn’t shown. I’ve seen the first three eps of season 3 and it’s really kick ass.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

by Rev. Slappy on Feb 23, 2010 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

Ahhh gotcha

Season three is by far my favorite season, it’s great. I haven’t seen anything for season 4, but the way it’s set up kinda pisses me off.

I am going to see Breaking Away on Thursday night.

I’m pretty excited as I’ve never seen it before. I live in LA and it’s playing on a double bill with Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket. The theater showing it is the New Beverly Cinema, which is the revival house Quentin Tarantino just bought. Every night is a double feature and tickets are only $7 for both movies. This week the director Jason Reitman (director of Juno and Up in the Air) is programming all the films and he will be there to discuss the films. The traffic sucks in LA, this is the trade-off.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Breaking Away

It’s very 1970s and small town. But, I think it’s a great movie. Pro cycling was practically unknown to the US back in those days and it really captures that.

Football: The Program, The Longest Yard, The Express, The Blind Side, All the Right Moves, The Last Boyscout (yeah, not all footbal, but it was in there), Wildcats, and one of my top favs – Varsity Blues

Baseball: Bad News Bears, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Major League, The Natural, and Sandlot

Hockey: Slap Shot, hands down, but Youngblood and Miracle were also good

Basketball: Coach Carter, Glory Road, Hoosiers, and my personal fav, White Men Can’t Jump

Golf: Caddyshack (best), Happy Gilmore, Tin Cup

Boxing: Cinderella Man, Diggstown, Raging Bull, and of course Rocky

Not sure why this is true, but boxing tends to lend itself to great films.

Rocky is the grandfather of all modern sports films. Really, the big fight at the end is the least interesting part. Rocky Balboa was really good too. Raging Bull is probably the greatest sports film of all time.

Wow, that's a tough question - and a lot of good movies listed

Football – Rudy — honorable mentions – the original The Longest Yard & North Dallast Forty
Baseball – Bull Durham — honorable mention – Major League
Basketball – Hoosiers, nothing else ranks
Hockey – Slapshot – nothing else comes close
Boxing – the original Rocky — honorable mention – Million Dollar Baby
Golf – Tin Cup — honorable mention – Caddyshack (it’s not REALLY a golf movie)
Others – Kingpin, Blades of Glory

Tough to select a favorite. I could watch Rudy, Bull Durham, Hoosiers, Slapshot or Tin Cup about anytime they come on.
