The Greatest Kansas City Chiefs, By the Numbers: #50

We are finally into the 50s this morning, which means we're halfway done counting down the greatest Kansas City Chiefs of all-time.

Today, a lot of linebackers and probably most of them you either have never heard of or don't remember off the top of your head. We've got a current NFL head coach on this list, a former first round picks, plenty of second round picks and a lot of no name guys.

  • LB Erick Anderson (1992-93)
  • S/LB Larry Atkins (1999-02)
  • C Jim Barton (1960)
  • LB Rocky Boiman (2008)
  • LB Ronnie Caveness (1965)
  • LB Calvin Daniels (1982-85)
  • LB Anthony Davis (1994-98)
  • LB Jack Del Rio (1987-88)
  • LB Napoleon Harris (2007-08)
  • LB Tim Kearney (1975)
  • LB Rob McGovern (1989-90)
  • LB Kawika Mitchell (2003-06)
  • C Mike Oriard (1970-73)
  • LB Cal Peterson (1979-81)
  • LB Clarence Sanders (1978)
  • LB Bob Thornbladh (1974)
  • LB Mike Vrabel (2009)

We're talking about a lot of different Chiefs, after the jump...

Star-divide

LB Erick Anderson (1992-93)

Anderson was a 7th round pick out of Michigan by the Chiefs in 1992. He played one season for the Chiefs, playing in eight games and starting one of them. He registered no significant stats.

S/LB Larry Atkins (1999-02)

Atkins was a third round pick from UCLA. He played four seasons in KC, forcing one fumble and making nine tackles.

C Jim Barton (1960)

Not a whole lot on Jim Barton out there. He played and started 14 games for the Dallas Texas in 1960. He would played his final two NFL seasons in Denver after his time in Dallas.

LB Rocky Boiman (2008)

Boiman was originally drafted in the 4th round by the Titans in 2002. He played four years in Tennessee and two in Indianapolis before briefly coming to KC.

After coming to KC in mid-October 2008, Boiman started the final nine games of the season in place of waived LB Napoleon Harris. He had 51 tackles on two forced fumbles as a Chief.

LB Ronnie Caveness (1965)

Drafted in both the AFL and NFL drafts in 1965, Caveness was a 2nd round pick by the Chiefs out of Arkansas. He played in seven games for the Chiefs, registering no significant stats.

LB Calvin Daniels (1982-85)

Daniels was a 2nd round pick out of UNC in 1982. He played three seasons in KC, starting 33 of the 57 games he played in. He started every game at linebacker during his last two seasons as a Chief, racking up nine sacks and two picks for his career as a Chief.

LB Anthony Davis (1994-98)

Davis played in quite a few games for the Chiefs in the mid-1990s. He started 48 of the 68 games he played in, garnering 12.5 sacks and five INTs.

Davis is currently on the coaching staff of MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas.

LB Jack Del Rio (1987-88)

Del Rio spent two of his eleven NFL season in KC. He started 17 games over those two seasons, nabbing four sacks one INT and forcing one fumble.

Del Rio is currently the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

LB Napoleon Harris (2007-08)

A former first round pick by the Raiders, Harris started 13 games at middle linebacker for the Chiefs during his short tenure. He was signed in March 2007 and cut in October 2008.

He currently plays in the USFL.

LB Tim Kearney (1975)

Kearney spent one season with the Chiefs, sandwiched in between time with the Bengals and Rams. He registered no significant stats.

LB Rob McGovern (1989-90)

McGovern was a 10th round pick in 1989. He played in 27 games for the Chiefs, starting two of those games. He played two more seasons in Pittsburgh and New England before falling out of the NFL.

LB Kawika Mitchell (2003-06)

Drafted by the Chiefs in the second round, Mitchell had four very productive seasons at middle linebacker. He started 50 of 59 games; had 4.5 sacks and three picks; and averaged just over 60 tackles per season.

Mitchell currently plays for the Buffalo Bills.

C Mike Oriard (1970-73)

Oriard was a backup center for the Chiefs for four seasons. He played in 42 games over those four seasons.

LB Cal Peterson (1979-81)

In between time with the Cowboys, Bucs and Raiders, Cal (Not Carl!) Peterson started thirteen games for the Chiefs over three seasons. He registered no significant stats.

LB Clarence Sanders (1978, 1980)

Originally a 17th round (Ouch!) pick by the Chargers, Sanders played his only two NFL seasons in Kansas City. He returned three total kicks in 1978. Those are his only significant stats.

LB Bob Thornbladh (1974)

An 11th round pick out of Michigan, Thornbladh played in fourteen games for the Chiefs in his only NFL season. He registered no significant stats.

LB Mike Vrabel (2009)

Vrabel came to the Chiefs as part of the 2009 trade for QB Matt Cassel. Vrabel played in 14 games for the Chiefs last year, forcing two fumbles.

Kawika Mitchell

Really? I remember not being one bit sad Mitchell left after the 2006 season. I never thought he was a very good LB. Yes he won a Super Bowl with Giants surrounded by a very strong core of players around him. The Giants didn’t see a need to extend his contract after that, and he hasn’t done much for the Bills. I get so sick of everyone saying it was mistake to release him and Tynes. Tynes was not a good kicker and Mitchell is not a good LB

+1

Mitchell’s last game as a Chief should be reason enough to vote for Davis. He is terrible against the pass and Peyton made us pay….bad.

You voted Jack Del Rio? Based on what? If I was gonna pick someone on what they did....

….elsewhere and overall then I would pick Vrable.

I picked Mitchell not because he won a superbowl elsewhere but because he lead the team in tackles and no one else on the list excites me.

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

WRITE IT DOWN!

Anthony Davis

Some how I missed Davis when I voted…He would have received my vote…I’ve always been a fan of Del Rio and didn’t really pay too much attention until I saw Mitchell had received so many votes.

if you read the stats

and not just who you know, you would realize that Anthony Davis started in 2 less games than Mitchell and had better stats

Seriously mates, when have I ever been sarcastic?

Oh and in case you were wondering, that hug offer is still there when you are ready UC :p

Agreed

A good LB on a good D.

Kawika Mitchel was a very good player for the Chiefs, and should have never been allowed to leave. We still haven’t adequately replaced him.

Racking up tackles

He just racked up takes down field on a horrid defense….I would rather have Williams and Johnson than Mitchell…on of that he plays weak side linebacker now not MLB

by groundedchevy on Feb 22, 2010 11:42 AM CST up reply actions

Not true. Kawika made plenty of tackles right around the LOS or behind it. He was a very good around the LOS player, but struggled somewhat downfield. Williams is a downfield tackler, who rarley gets penetration. DJ was a very good penetrator, but until late last year was an OLB, and as an ILB, hasn’t shown the same penetration abilities.
