Titans C Kevin Mawae Has The Chiefs Connection
Kevin Mawae appears primed to leave the Tennessee Titans and become a free agent on March 5th. Whether the Chiefs show an interest in him remains to be seen but nearly the entire Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff is familiar with him.
Mawae signed a free agent contract with the Jets in 1998, a team that employed these current Chiefs:
GM Scott Pioli, Head coach Todd Haley, OC Charlie Weis, DC Romeo Crennel, OL coach Bill Muir, DL coach Anthony Pleasant, RBs coach Maurice Carthon and WRs coach Richie Anderson.
If the Chiefs show an interest in him, it could speak of Rudy Niswanger's future. Mawae, 39, has age going against him in a big way but Pioli and Co. haven't shied away from veterans over the past year so it's not unreasonable to think they might take a look.
If the Chiefs take a peek at a 39 year old center, it likely means confidence in Niswanger is dropping.

Big time improvement over Rudy
And a great leader to boot….. Means that we can draft a guy and not expect him to start this year. Kevin isn’t the player he once was but is still better than what we got.
I'd take him, and draft his replacement in the middle rounds
* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
Would be a gamble
If KC signs him, he’d almost be guaranteed the start whether he’s still good or not. And, we’d still have to draft a center for the future. I might rather just angle for a center early in the draft, try to get some improvement for this year and a future rock in one fell swoop.
The path to Victory is made of losers.
Rookie Lineman
Rookie lineman in most cases take a few years to develop in this league. I would much rather have a vet start this year and let the rookie develop behind him. I’m ready to win now not 3 years from now….

meh
My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
The vets we signed were such pathetic failures, for the most part, that I hope it taught Pioli to stay away from this type player this year.
I don't think we should ignore ALL vets because of the failure of the ones from last year
The ability to admit failure, but still be able to trust your judgement in the future is one of the most important skills a GM can have. I think Pioli has shown this ability throughout his career and will continue to sign vets that he feels confident about. You shouldn’t avoid risk simply because you failed once. I think Mawae is an improvement over Rudy so I wouldn’t be opposed to signing him, but I’d rather draft one (I’m a fan of Pouncey), but since we probably won’t be able to fix every area of weakness through the draft, Mawae is a pretty good stop gap for next year.
Good point about the stop gap
I just took a look at 2011 centers, and there’s some decent looking ones there. It would be real nice to free up a draft pick this year with a Mawae.
Course with all the good junior talent this year trying to beat the rookie cap, there might be three or four centers go in the first round next year.
The path to Victory is made of losers.
Sign him
Mawae still plays on an All Pro level even at this age. Signing him will allow us to take a later round center and allow him to develop while rotating to keep Mawae healthy

NO
Niswanger is better than that

give me one reason we should give him another chance?
Niswanger has sucked over the past two seasons as a starter. Mawae has been head and shoulders over Niswanger..
But if your argument is that Niswanger is better at getting put on his ass then sure I agree with you

If their confidence in Niswanger hasn't dropped then there is something seriously wrong
Rudy may be the hardest working offensive lineman we’ve got and he could be a phenomenal reserve. He simply doesn’t cut it as a starting center in this league. At 6’5" 300lbs, he’s far too lanky. Some centers can do just fine at 6’3"-6’4"+ but they’re usually heavier and/or have a lower center of gravity. Rudy is fighting against his own body. It’s impossible for him to gain any leverage, especially when he has to snap the ball before he can engage his opponent and he’s a half second behind.
Maybe if he sits behind Waters at LG for a few seasons he can eventually inherit his way back into the starting lineup where his stature is less of an obstacle.
I wanna win so bringing in anyone and everyone is worth it....
…I’m tired of losing and if we workout Mawae and he looks like an upgrade then why not?
My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.
WRITE IT DOWN!
I just think he is an upgrade to what we have now and
then we dont have to use a draft pick this year on a center if we dont want to, that would free up the pick for another postion of need, just my opinion

Grab a Center in the 2nd Rnd would be an upgrade to all and possibly an answer at Guard if it doesn't work out

39 And Injury-Prone
He’s played a full 16 games only twice in the last five years. This is not a guy you give a ton of money to or more than a one year contract.

To the question about Rudy at Guard
When I have seen Rudy get beat, it has been an issue of just getting ManHandled. I’m not sure how that would change if you moved him to Guard?
bad move
age 39 …this move would be a waste of time and money

He can
produce better than what we have for this season coming. Opens up a draft pick this year, as others have said, so we can address other holes and draft a center in next years draft. There is a few good ones coming out in 2011
If the Chiefs can get Pouncey
with 2a or 2b they need to pounce(y) on him. The guy is a beast. Never missed games at Florida. Mawae’s too damn old.

His twin brother plays a helluva guard position and even played D line as a sophomore.

Wade Smith
I was a fan of Wade Smith all year. I thought he stepped in well across multiple positions on the line. I would like to see him get a chance at the C or RG starting position. He is only a 29 year old 3rd round selection that started all 16 games as a rookie. I would be surprised if we don’t see more of him next year. What are your guys thoughts?
