My Pass-O Plan.... (post yours if you feel the need )

20091220-221333-pic-76742450_t607_medium

I just found out that Kevin Walter is a unrestricted free agent. I think this could be a huge pick up. He would turn 29 in August and could line up from anywhere from the 1 to 4. Let's face it, Chris Chambers needs to be re-signed. But he shouldn't be around for more than 2 years. Walter could become a reliable third down receiver that the Chiefs have lacked.

After signing Kevin Walter to a 3 to 4 year deal, the Chiefs should use their first second round pick (depending on how Brandon Spike's draft stock rises) to get either Jordan Shipley, Mardy Gilyard, Arrelious Benn, or Golden Tate. This draft pick could play from anywhere from the #2 spot to the #4, depending on how training camp weighs out and how Haley and Weis feel. When making these two moves, the Chiefs have no worries at TE because of the spread offense. Sean Ryan is a great red zone threat and 3rd down threat, Leonard Pope is a good guy for the short hitch route and a couple flat routes, and Brad Cottam will mature practice after practice and game after game. So they are solid enough to the point where we have no need for a Jason Witten or Antonio Gates-esque TE.

Now for the easy part, cut Bobby Wade, Devard Darling, and possible Quinten Lawrence (depending on if we draft a WR in the second who can also return).

Now you have;

QB: Matt Cassel

WR1: Dwayne Bowe, Kevin Walter, Terrance Copper

WR2: Chris Chambers, (Our second round pick), Lance Long

TE: Sean Ryan, Leonard Pope, Brad Cottam

your thoughts?

you lost me at Sean Ryan

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

I was completely lost there too...

Sean Ryan was pitiful when used as a ‘receiving tight end". He was RARELY thrown to on 3rd down… either he couldn’t get open, or he was one of the last ones targeted. Sean Ryan scored 2 touchdown early in the season. Nothing happened afterwards. 2 Touchdowns is hardly worthy of being considered as a threat. Remember Leonard Pope was brought in because Sean Ryan had problems with blocking and catching the ball.

“Sean Ryan is a great red zone threat and 3rd down threat”

MYTH Debunked

Go Chiefs!!!!

he was also the worst pass blocking TE i have ever seen

I think he gave up 5 sacks in 3 games or so

I believe that you are correct.

When I was going through all of the reciever, and tight end stats that is one that stuck out. He also had MANY interceptions thrown his way.

Go Chiefs!!!!

Pope, Cottam, O'Connell

Ryan had a couple decent showings, but fell off the table and was inactive through much of the season.

Ryan is probably the 5th or 6th best TE on the team right now, behind these 3 guys, Vrabel and Waters :)

as far as your WR ideas...

Walter is OK, probable a slight upgrade over Bobby Wade at best, IMO

I would certainly look at speedy WR, maybe a guy that could return kicks, in the draft.

I still have hopes for QL… he has some potential, I think.

I’d also sign Osgood from SD… he’s a ST STUD and has a chance to play some WR at 6’5"

agreed on Osgood

he could be a huge steal. I’m hoping Pioli continues his habit of signing division rival rejects

I'd say Walter was more than a slight upgrade over Wade

Bigger target, which makes him a lot more useful in the redzone. And I’d say his production between the 20s trumps that of Wade as well.

Not exciting

but I’m ok with it. Depends on who that 2nd round pick is…

I think we should...

trade our 2011 1st rounder for A Boldin and draft Gilyard or Shipley with our 2nd, 2nd rounder.

Boldin, Lawerence
Bowe, Copper
Gilyard, Long

That looks scary to me with depth players that have potential. (Copper is a good gunner).

I would like to get Boldin

but I think a 1st round pick is way too much for him

by badassz1987 on Feb 21, 2010 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

Im no sure I would give a second round pick for Boldin

the guy has been getting hurt a lot lately.

1st round pick is too much for Boldin

dont get me wrong I would like to have him here but thats just too much

by banshee_01 on Feb 21, 2010 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

Would rather have Wade than Shipley.

No sense on using a high pick on a player who so closely resembles one we already have.

Kerry Meier Kansas

This kid can catch the ball, throw the ball will be a late round pick if he is drafted. I have watched this kid in High school and college . he was the Q B for the PITTSBURG PURPLE DRAGONS and Q B at kansas till they turned him into a W R he is smart and hard to bring down. This would let us use te higher pick on someone else .

Take a chance on Denorio Alexander....

should know more about his condition by draft time.

Brodie's better than Cassel

I really don't care about WR one bit

Haley knows what he wants whether FA, trade, or draft. I am not going to speculate one bit on who Haley picks

This would be the best improvement of the Chiefs pass offense!

Resign Chambers. Draft either Tate, Shipley or Gilyard with 2B or 3. All of these receivers will be good receivers at the next level and will be able to find gaps in the slot. Then draft Dennis Pitta with one of our 5th round picks. Pitta is an amazing athlete that knows how to get open. I see him as a Dallas Clark type athlete.

Our lineup would be:
QB: Matt Cassel
RB: Jamal Charles
WR1: Dwayne Bowe
WR2: Chris Chambers
Slot WR: Tate, Shipley or Gilyard
TE: Dennis Pitta

by focochief on Feb 21, 2010 10:05 PM CST reply actions

people, please ... the BEST way to improve the offense is ...

Okung

then another OLineman in 2nd round … and maybe another in either 3rd or 4th …

because no matter how many WR’s we have, regardless of who it is or how fast they run or how sure handed they might be … NONE of it makes a difference if the QB is injured or dead …

get the damned OLine!

i'd like to see tate, shipley, or williams

shipley and williams will have much more of a chance at being there at 2b while we can upgrade NT if cody is there at 2a or possibly C with Pouncey. im not sure i like the idea of taking a wr at 2a unless its tate but some rate him as the second best wr and i dont think he’ll fall to the 2nd round.
