I just found out that Kevin Walter is a unrestricted free agent. I think this could be a huge pick up. He would turn 29 in August and could line up from anywhere from the 1 to 4. Let's face it, Chris Chambers needs to be re-signed. But he shouldn't be around for more than 2 years. Walter could become a reliable third down receiver that the Chiefs have lacked.
After signing Kevin Walter to a 3 to 4 year deal, the Chiefs should use their first second round pick (depending on how Brandon Spike's draft stock rises) to get either Jordan Shipley, Mardy Gilyard, Arrelious Benn, or Golden Tate. This draft pick could play from anywhere from the #2 spot to the #4, depending on how training camp weighs out and how Haley and Weis feel. When making these two moves, the Chiefs have no worries at TE because of the spread offense. Sean Ryan is a great red zone threat and 3rd down threat, Leonard Pope is a good guy for the short hitch route and a couple flat routes, and Brad Cottam will mature practice after practice and game after game. So they are solid enough to the point where we have no need for a Jason Witten or Antonio Gates-esque TE.
Now for the easy part, cut Bobby Wade, Devard Darling, and possible Quinten Lawrence (depending on if we draft a WR in the second who can also return).
Now you have;
QB: Matt Cassel
WR1: Dwayne Bowe, Kevin Walter, Terrance Copper
WR2: Chris Chambers, (Our second round pick), Lance Long
TE: Sean Ryan, Leonard Pope, Brad Cottam
