If Chiefs Are Interested, Dansby Could Cost $30 Million

There haven't been any indication the Kansas City Chiefs are interested in soon-to-be free agent Karlos Dansby. Then again, Dansby is under contract with the Arizona Cardinals so any interest expressed would be tampering.

Nevertheless, Mike Garafalo of the Newark Star-Ledger says the "number being thrown around" is $30 million.

In guaranteed dollars.

That's certainly a jaw-dropping amount. For some perspective. JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL draft, got $31.5 million guaranteed.

Dansby has also expressed interest in going to a contender, which would likely rule out the Chiefs.

Unless they were willing to top that $30 million number.

That’s Redskins territory….

Dansby isn’t worth that!

Nope

Not interested.

That’s what his market would be, and it makes sense. He’s BY FAR the best Unrestricted FA on the market. He said he’s open to anyone, and we should be VERY interested.

Too expensive and not worth it. Besides that money will go to Wilfork. ( ;

My bold prediction and I think our best chance at moving down in the 1st. Bret Favre retires, Tavarris Jackson is not retained or leaves and the Vikings trade up, with our beloved Chiefs, for Jimmy Claussen.

WRITE IT DOWN!

But For $30 Million???

Make him the highest paid Chief EVER?

I will pass, especially since we are about to fork over the same amount on a top 5 for the 3rd consecutive year. Money can be better spent elsewhere.

He;s a great player

But not worth that money.

Also

What contender has that kind of money to throw around

Similar amounts

But for a 22 year old vs. a 28 year old.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 21, 2010 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

But one is proven. Dansby has at least 4-5 top years left, the same length as a top 5 contract, but more of a sure thing.

by dablueguy on Feb 21, 2010 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

Lower ceiling

When you take a guy with the fifth pick, you probably feel he has a chance to be the best player at his position in the NFL…that’s not Dansby.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 21, 2010 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah but

We know what Dansby"s level of play is. On the other hand we don’t know what any of these guys coming out will be.

by bluechief7 on Feb 21, 2010 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

He’s worth that money more than a top 5 pick is. As much as I like McClain for our #5, I’d rather pay Dansby, and then draft a S(Berry), a NT(Williams), or a WR(Bryant), or the best option, move down. Dansby signing takes a major need off the table.

by dablueguy on Feb 21, 2010 2:18 PM CST reply actions

I think he's worth it...

If it’s a 5 year deal at $30mil.

by bluechief7 on Feb 21, 2010 2:22 PM CST reply actions

It would be a similar deal to Cassel’s, 5-6 years, 30 guaranteed, total value about 60. I think he’s worth it more than McClain would be, who would get a similar contract.

by dablueguy on Feb 21, 2010 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

I agree Blue...

At the same time, we really need to be actively pursuing Wilfork. If we can only have one of the top defensive free agents, I’ll take Wilfork every time. I fwe can’t get Wilfork, I’d be fine with us getting Dansby and addressing the NT issue in the draft.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Feb 22, 2010 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

I agree, Wilfork over Dansby if we could only get one, BUT Dansby will cost nothing but money, while Wilfork will cost money AND draft pick(s), so Dansby will be the far easier get.

by dablueguy on Feb 22, 2010 11:24 AM CST up reply actions

He would also be

One of those players that improves the D right away. A rookie might take a couple years.

by bluechief7 on Feb 21, 2010 2:28 PM CST reply actions

well, my guess is that KC takes a shot at ONE bigger name FA/trade...

if it’s Dansby OR Wilfork… I take “the fork” everytime.

IF Wilfork is out of the question, I’d take Dansby and draft a big heavy

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

by stagdsp on Feb 21, 2010 2:33 PM CST reply actions

I’d prefer Wilfork also, but he won’t hit Free agency.

by dablueguy on Feb 21, 2010 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

agreed...but a trade is possible

and he will cost plenty of money

I dont’ see them paying 2 vets PLUS a top 5 pick on one year

I'd like to live in Florida too... but I found a good paying job in Des Moines, so I'm here

Here's the thing everyone seems to be forgetting about Wilfork...

NE drafted a VERY capable replacement last year in Ron Brace. Wilfork will NOT be a Patriot next year one way or another. They are not going to give him the HUGE payday he wants so, somebody is going to get him this offseason.

With Pioli and Crennell here, I’d say we are the TOP candidate for acquiring his services IF we are willing to give him the big payday he is expecting…I think Pioli is willing to do that.

He certainly didnt earn the right to ask for 30M with his play in his contract year...

If its a “what have you dont for me lately?” league then….

Karlos Dansby: 109 tackles(89 solo), 1 sack, 1 int

Demorrio Williams: 117 tackles(95 solo), 0 sacks, 0 ints

Not a whole lot of difference except pay expectations.

No thanks. MUCH rather have that money shelled out to a NT then an ILB

To put in perspective...

Bart Scott got a 6 year 48M dollar deal last offseason with only 22M guaranteed and he’s easily a better ILB the Dansby will ever be.

I read on the Pats site yesterday

and most of them think if VW is traded they’ll at least get a 1st and 3rd for him. Some were even saying a 1st and 2nd.

by SoMoChief on Feb 21, 2010 4:26 PM CST reply actions

There were a few that said that,

but the majority were talking about a 1st being included

by SoMoChief on Feb 21, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

well, with all due respect to the blog world

that’s a fan perspective…

in reality, it could easily be less… remember, several teams wanted Cassel last year, and KC got him AND Vrabel for a 2nd.

A potential Franchise QB has just as much or more trade value than a NT… so I would think that Wilfork’s value is somewhere around a 2nd

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league

* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs

by stagdsp on Feb 21, 2010 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

The reason we got Cassel is because we were willing to take Vrabel, and get his salary off their books.

by dablueguy on Feb 21, 2010 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

doubt that

sure, it was a salary-dump… but KC wanted Vrabel to help with the 3-4 transition… he wasn’t pushed on us.

they were willing to take less than usual, because they couldn’t afford Cassel and Brady…

I think they could take a reasonable offer for Wilfork if they can’t get him signed to a long term deal

Karlos Dansby is a more accomplished Derrick Johnson

I say no to Dansby. The type of player Dansby is, a sideline to sideline speed player is exactly what Johnson is. Neither Dansby nor Johnson is the type of guy to take on blockers. I don’t see the Chiefs going in this direction.

Tyson Jackson’s contract was for $57 million, and $31 million guaranteed.

What does the fact that they were drafted different years have to do with it?
and totally different drafts.

What’s that have to do with it? I was comparing what KC pays Jackson to the number being thrown around for Dansby. I think Dansby would earn $30 million guaranteed more than Jackson would, but part of that is because I believe Jackson is a pedestrian talent.

well, I think you're wrong about Jackson

What do you like about Jackson

Did you watch him play at LSU? There’s reason he was almost invisible on the field for them. It’s because he’s not very good. He couldn’t even make an impact as a 4-3 end in college. How’s he going to go from such mediocrity to being a star 5-technique end in the NFL?

I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

by burntorangehorn on Feb 21, 2010 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

He’s not a 4-3 playmaking DE. He’s a 3-4 DE, an occupier to free up others. Now we just have to those others. He’s never going to make much noise, as Pioli noted when he drafted him. He compared him to Russel Maryland, and anchor player, but hardly spectacular.

a great addition, but...

too much money for a free agent. There really isnt a lot of guys who have ever gone to another team as a FA, and dominated the way they did with their previous team. I know there are a few, but overall it just doesnt happen.

Too risky for that much money. Build through the draft. Bring in a couple of solid players at key positions, for depth and leadership, but going for a homerun in free agency is a crap shoot.
