Patriots fan here...Let's talk Matt Cassel

Hey guys,

I was surprised to see a post on here earlier about the idea of you guys drafting Jimmy Clausen and trading Cassel to Denver. I'm sure some of you scoff at the idea, but I'm sure some of you, wouldn't mind this happening? I've been following the Chiefs closely after we traded Cassel to you guys, and I really think Cassel will have a break-out season next year.  You guys got Charlie Weis! Weis made Tom Brady into what he is now, and I fully believe he will do the same with Cassel.  But if you traded Cassel to the Broncos; that would come back and bite the Chiefs in butt, very quickly. I, for one, saw 1st hand what Cassel can do with a team as good as Denver. With a good O-line, Receivers, Backs (All of which Denver has) Cassel is a Pro-Bowl Caliber QB. I've seen that some of you guys are starting to lose patience with Matt. But really, this guy is a fighter. I can't even fathom the idea of Cassel being a flop. He's over-come way too much adversity. These stories always have happy endings. If I know my man Cassel, he will be holding up that Lombardi Trophy within the next 5 years. You have Todd Haley, Scott Pioli, Romeo Crennel, and Charlie Weis. There is no way that that is not a playoff caliber coaching staff.

Keep the faith guys. I have no doubt that the Kansas City Chiefs will be the team of the decade.

Thanks #1

You are saying the exact same things I have been saying about Cassel. I wasn’t happy with his play last year but I DO understand how bad the circumstances really were here in KC for him.

Charlie Weis IS the wildcard. His presence here changes everything and most of us here know that. Cassel is going to be our QB for the long term and by the end of next year, I have a feeling that every Chiefs fan will be happy we have him.

Thanks for coming on here and sharing your thoughts. I agree with you. We have to just wait and see but, I don’t think #7 is going to disappoint us next year.

Your team is the role model for other teams, so thats a solid rec. Thanks.

Thanks!

I’m really comfortable with Cassel as our QB. He’s a true professional.

When a team loses as much as the Chiefs have in the last 3 years, fans will start pointing fingers to what the problem is. It’s only natural that Cassel gets put on the hot seat. Practically everyone aspect of the team has been on the hot seat (Pioli, Haley, D-line, O-line, RB, etc etc). I believe it’s a product of impatience. I believe in Cassel and people running the organization. It’s all going in the right direction.

by worc on Feb 19, 2010 12:29 PM CST reply actions

thanks for the post

I’m excited about the possibility of Cassel with Weiss and a full year of the same system.

I think that people will always be critical until the team starts winning a lot…

And the Clausen thing is just dumb speculation.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

Nice to hear this

from the fan of another team. Makes me feel like the Chiefs really are doing it the right way. (confirming what I believed already)

by bigknoxy on Feb 19, 2010 12:33 PM CST reply actions

This is the reason why I hope we go after Okung.

Its the safe and not as appealing as a Dez Bryant or a McClain. But we need somebody over there protecting the guy that is our future.

by chiefs_fan05 on Feb 19, 2010 12:39 PM CST reply actions

But DAMN! Dez fucking Bryant!!!

Man, what a stud! I would love to see him catching TDs for the Chiefs for the next decade. He’ll be the best WR to come out of the draft since Megatron.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Feb 19, 2010 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

That would make us have a pretty potent WR core.

Oh believe me I’m a big fan of Dez Bryant also. I know WR’s are starting to be hard to come by for that #1 WR position. But I think it would be better for our future and would better two posistions for us if we went w/ Okung. It wouldnt surprise me much if they moved Waters to Center if we went with Okung either.

by chiefs_fan05 on Feb 19, 2010 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong...

I’m reasonably sure that we won’t draft Bryant.

And I agree with the fact that our O-line could use some serious help. I don’t know how I feel about drafting a LT with the 5th pick. I’ve been up and down on that. I just don’t know if Okung is good enough to be any better than Albert. I think our best bet is to get the best Center on the board in the 2nd round and maybe look for a future replacement for Waters in the mid-late rounds. We have a MONSTER already on the team in Colin Brown. He and Smith, Alleman, Niswanger, and Ndukwe can fight it out for either guard position. I actually think that one move along with some of the other guys on the team and we can have a pretty badass O-line.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Feb 19, 2010 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

that's my opinion exactly

I would rather have Berry or McClain at #5…
but Bryant wouldn’t upset me, as long as OL got addressed later on… and NT

i dont like mcclain at 5

i think if this trade with the bucs and rams go down- our chances of drafting berry get a little higher…its either berry or okung/davis depending on combines/pro-day workouts.

Good thoughts #1

I am supporting Cassel as well: great character, positive attitude despite much adversity and change, and a student of the game. I am hoping to see it all come together for him on the field next year.

by Hail2DaChiefs on Feb 19, 2010 1:07 PM CST reply actions

Hi hail! I am backing him too. He is our guy whether or not we like it or love it or hate it.

We need to back him for now. And I think we still need to draft a young upstart QB that we can train and develop over time. Competition is good.

Hey man.......

I completely agree with your argument about QB’s. I see nothing wrong with grabbing another solid QB (whether by FA or later in the draft).

We just

really don’t know if he is the guy yet. Hopefully he is as that would make things a lot easier, but he hasn’t shown it thus far and once again we have to wishfully think that he can perform at an NFL level b/c frankly we just don’t have that much talent or that many options and we are already financially invested in him.

by wilson123 on Feb 19, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions

Well,

we know he can perform at an NFL level, as long as he had talent around him. It’s true you don’t have much talent now, but Scott Pioli is no fool. He worked miracles in NE. I don’t see what would stop him from doing the same in KC. Once Pioli does his thing, everything will work out with Matt Cassel.

I’ve seen a lot of Cassel, and I know he’ll be successful somewhere. And, Gosh! I hope it’s with you guys!

by #1Patriot on Feb 19, 2010 5:08 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

21 TD / 11 INT is not cutting it. I would like to see at least 30 TD’s before I start saying that he is our guy for the future as well as an accuracy over 62% and over 3800 yds in a season.

by wilson123 on Feb 19, 2010 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

True

That isn’t spectacular, but in NE every week he got better and better. And once he became comfortable running the offense, he was putting up consistent 2-3 TD, 300 yd games. He just needs a little more time.

by #1Patriot on Feb 19, 2010 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

But doesn't

a great or even a really good QB makes the people around him better instead of the other way around ala Manning or Brees?

by wilson123 on Feb 19, 2010 5:21 PM CST up reply actions

That may be somewhat true

but a QB cant make the receivers catch all he can do is throw the ball

by badassz1987 on Feb 19, 2010 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

But

did you see the balls he threw last year? Most of them were very wobbly and low quality. It’s just kind of strange when 5-6 WRs and TEs cant catch the ball all of a sudden and there is only 1 QB throwing to the.

by wilson123 on Feb 19, 2010 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

Even Chris Chambers

said that it was mostly the receivers’ fault

by #1Patriot on Feb 19, 2010 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

even Manning, Brady and Brees dont throw perfect spirals everytime

its the receivers job to beable to make the catch even if its not a perfect throw, they get paid alot as well

by banshee_01 on Feb 19, 2010 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Wobbly and low quality?

Sorry. I dont buy that.

If a pass hits you in the hands, you catch the ball. Period.

by Petey14 on Feb 20, 2010 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

Idk

What would happen if Manning, Brees, or Brady were thrown Matt Cassel’s situation of last year. I don’t think they would have put up very good number either. Brady would probably be dead right now :-)

by #1Patriot on Feb 19, 2010 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

I dont think any of them could take the beating Cassel did and still have played the rest of the year

by banshee_01 on Feb 19, 2010 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

just so you know

there are some Cassel haters on here that you just arent going to get through to. so at some point you just have to let it go, they hate Cassel for some unknown reason without even giving him a chance here. And for the record I totally agree with you on this topic.

Dude

Brees was once benched for half a season because of poor play. He was then made the starter again and promptly threw 3 more interceptions.

Come on.

by bansky on Feb 20, 2010 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

basically I put up Trent Green’s numbers, who was our last successful QB here. Like Trent, I would be satisfied if he could provide quarterbacking at a slightly above average NFL level.

by wilson123 on Feb 19, 2010 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

Even

with the numbers that Cassel put up last year he still had us in position to win 9 games. Several(if not all) of those games he led us down the field in the 4th quarter for the go ahead score only to have the defense lose us 5 of those games. He did HIS job last year, other guys did not. And as far as stats go the only stat I care about is WINS, which I believe he will be leading us to a bunch of starting next year

Send Cassel to Denver for Ryan Clady

Pick up Jeff Garcia, draft Colt McCoy, and Jason Fox in the second, We don’t need a QB that won’t throw the damn ball.

cuz those moves would definitely make us a sb contender…..sorry dont know how to do the sarcasm thing

by badassz1987 on Feb 19, 2010 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

No folks I'm seriously not joking

Cassel got worse as the year went on, he does not have a quick release, he doesn’t have that big arm to be holding the ball looking downfield.

Cassel very often was overthrowing and throwing behind his receivers, yes there was drops but a lot of those that were counted as drops were just as much on Cassel as his receivers.

Do you see how flat Cassel throws the deep ball?

Did you see the poor mechanics in his throwing motion?

Give him a line, give him better receivers, but you could give him Andre Reed, Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin and Marvin Harrison, along with Gonzo, and have Roaf, Waters, D. Dawson, Shields, and Tait pass protecting for him in their primes and, he’d still throw the ball in bad places, he’d still take too many sacks. He’d still make piss poor decisions.

I don’t care who we take with our first pick, I don’t care who the offensive coordinator is, I’m not going to believe Cassel is anything more than a clip board holder until he proves otherwise. He played like a 3rd string quarterback more and more as the season went on. Until he shows he’s a legit QB in this league, until he can start putting the ball in the right places, until he can get rid of the ball in a timely manner, I’ll be down on him and I don’t care what anyone else says.

I don’t know about you but in a zone blocking scheme……..
LT Clady LG Albert C Waters RG Ndukwe RT O’Callaghan/Fox doesn’t sound bad to me, that’d leave Wisniewski or O’Dowd to pick up next year, Brown or Richardson should be able to take NDukwe’s slot by then and Fox should have taken O’Cal’s spot by then.

It’s a nice line on paper. I seriously don’t care about Garcia or McCoy, I’m just still hating on Cassel and I’d take either of them over him.

by mcclanahanman on Feb 19, 2010 9:48 PM CST up reply actions

yeah he only went 11-5 his 1st year starting

boy he really sucks ass doesnt he, in the words of Peter Griffin “DONE” with the conversation I just really dont get all the hating on Cassel we had no talent around him of course hes not going to succeed, MATT CASSEL IS OUR STARTING QB GET OVER IT

by banshee_01 on Feb 19, 2010 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

Don't bother anymore.

Cassel could go 19-0 10,000 yards,95 TD, 0 INT’s in a season, but if he underthrew a ball mcclanahanman would be right back here bustin his chops. Just ignore him.

by The Insider on Feb 19, 2010 10:20 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

you know I was thinking the same thing the other day

Cassel could go 59-60 in a game for 700 yards and 12td’s 0int’s and rush for another 150 yards, and some people on here would still say he needs to be traded or they would be bitching about the 1 incompletion that he had

by banshee_01 on Feb 19, 2010 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

yeah he went 11-5

With a team that went, what was it……….19-1 the year before, that if it hadn’t been for one hell of a freak catch by a nobody, would have been a 20-0 squad.

Yeah he sets the world on fire doesn’t he.

Nice video Thanks.

Those passes were def not wobbly. Thats the way a confident stud QB plays. When the rest of the offense gets their sh*! together that is the Matt Cassel we’ll see. These haters do not represent the majority of knowledgeable Chiefs fans who are quite happy having Matt as our QB. I think Brody is equally capable, despite a few “bad breaks”.

It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

You know, I get fed up listening to those haters on Matt Cassel. But the guy has “it” and I look at the likes of J. Russel or K. Orton, and I’m THRILLED to have Cassel. He had his moments, but he threw nearly the most (if not the most) 4th quarter TDs in the league. KC can do far worse, and with improvements in all other areas, Cassel will also improve and the Chiefs will FINALLY end their playoff drought
