Interior Offensive Line Positions Will Go Quickly For Chiefs In NFL Draft
The Kansas City Chiefs have a few perceived needs along the offensive line. Center and right guard are mentioned by a lot of folks as positions that need to be addressed sooner rather than later. Rudy Niswanger and Wade Smith are solid reserves but could be upgraded if given the opportunity.
The 2010 NFL Draft isn't incredibly deep along the interior offensive line, according to former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah.
He says Mike Iupati, guard out of Idaho, and Maurkice Pouncey, center out of Florida, lead the class of interior lineman and after that it's quite a dropoff.
To make things more difficult for the Chiefs, one of the top free agent guards, Eugene Amano, re-signed with the Tennessee Titans.
From the looks of it, immediate help to the interior offensive line may not come through the 2010 NFL Draft.

heres to hoping
we have our Guard in waiting in Colin Brown. Hopefully he can step right up and take the starting job, if not him then Ndukwe. We have options in house and i want to see us use Brown/Ndukwe/Smith first. If Brown steps in and is a stud then we have anchored part of the line that was horrible last year (thank you Mike Goff 8 games).
Regardless of who the Chiefs pick at #5 overall, Whitlock will call it the worst pick in the history of the Chiefs. Heres to hoping that #5 pick runs Whitlock out of town.....
I disagree.... there ARE some good prospects later in this draft..
There are 10-12 guys on this list that could start for KC… not counting some of the OTs from college that will play Guard in the NFL

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

We Could Snag Either Pouncey Or Iupati With The First Second Rounder
Even if we don’t, though, the good thing about a 4-12 team is that they can find value picks to fill holes pretty easily.

Don't Expect Much Help Through Free Agency, Though
That’s going to be slimmer pickings than the draft, thanks to the changes to unrestricted free agency.

Don not underestimate the desire of some owners
to dump salary in an uncapped year. There will be fewer RFAs with expiring cotracts, but there will be more guys cut with years remaining on their contracts.

I Don't See Them Dropping Many Offensive Linemen
Especially not those teams that have a lot of money invested in their QBs. Those teams that do will probably dump their old guys first.

Bad contract is bad
regardless of the position. Will they be cutting star players? No. But teams will cut good players who happen to be overpaid. This creates an opportunity to sign guys to contracts more in line with their ability.

Very Possibly
We’ll see, though…I’m just skeptical that we’ll see much talent enter the market.

Think of it like this...
We don’t have any current players who fit the profile, but what if guys like Kendrell Bell, Napolean Harris, Sackintosh, or Ty Law were still in KC? Imagine them with 2-3 years left on their big contracts.
Now an uncapped year comes along…you can cut them without worrying about a cap hit and get their contracts off the books for a profit year and also create payroll flexibility for when we go back to having a Cap.
What would you do? I’d cut em….
Lots of players around the league who may still be good players, just playing in the wrong system for the wrong $ figure.

Also Possible
But then there’s also the pattern of our GM’s player acquisitions. He only seems interested in players that have already been vetted through the Parcells/Belichick “farm system”…he doesn’t appear to look much for guys who would have been poor fits in other systems with which he’s unfamiliar. Thus the high number of Patriot/Dolphins/Cardinals rejects who filtered through here last season.
Moderator - Arrowhead Pride
That was certainly the case here last year
but it’s not consistent with his history prior to KC. I’m of the opinion that they late start and lack of familiarity with the roster inherited caused them to look to known quantities for short term solutions. I expect a more diverse approach in teh years to come.

agree
they were just trying to plug anyone in there that could produce. It still goes to show what we had on the roster before they came here, man were we bad

Agreed On Your Bell/Harris/Sackintosh Rationale, Though
It’s a contract dumping year, I’m just leery that those contract dumps will lead to players our team will end up acquiring.

There will be some gems to be found
It’s all about how much you pay them. With a roster as thin as ours, I have no doubt we can add a few key veterans at reasonable prices that will help immensely.

It's definitely looking like the year of jubilee, isn't it?
2010-2011 looks like a massive reset for the entire league in terms of salary cap hits that have been pushed forward from year to year. On the other side of the coin, it’s also zeroing out a lot of salary cap credits that have been pushed forward through the LTBE incentive loophole.
I have beat wholesale ass for a whole lot less.

Dont expect them to be there in the 2nd.

I think Pouncey and Asamoah would be a huge upgrade
but then again have you seen the defense.. I hope we find a starting guard in Brown, Ndukwe, Alleman, or a late pick..
I wouldn’t mind our starting line looking like this..
Albert Asamoah Pouncey Ndukwe O’callaghan
Not a guy over 26 and they should be able to build some chemistry by the time we’re able to contend in 2 years..

This is a huge IF and i'm not sure it can even happen..
Mankins is a RFA..If we put our 1st in there for compensation can we exchange firsts with NE for compensation?? That way we get mankins and we still have a later 1st round pick to get Thomas(s) Tate(wr) or Iupati(g)….
Can that happen?
Not exactly
What can haqppen is the Chiefs negotiate a contract with Mankins…he signs to those terms with NE…then NE trades him to us.

I say
Our first line of offensive line duty is to get a premier starting Center. Niswanger doesn’t cut it. JD Walton could be had in 3-4rd.
Next I say we draft a versitile OG. Sergio Render or Mitch Petrus could be had 4-5rd. This guy will play RG or backup RG and LG. Eventually taking over at RG or for Waters at LG.
Our tackles are set. Let them play. Let them Improve while the line gets more cohesion.
Our line is not that far away from being respectable. It’s not a dire need imo….

couldnt agree more!
Though, IF the right OT falls to KC in the 2nd (charles brown or maybe bruce campbell) I would strongly consider taking him, giving him the chance to win a starting job at some point

I agree.. I just think we need depth and more production outta our starters..
We should go 80% defense in this draft IMO
Say...
We draft Okung with our #5 pick, then we caom eup to pick 2a…and Cody and Pouncey are available. What do we do?

I would rather draft Berry
then draft Spikes and Cody.. Then draft best O-line../
I would kiss Pioli if he got Okung and Iupati and whatever Defensive BPA with our top 3 picks
Okung, Albert, Iupati … Brown is a non-proven player coming off injury, Waters is getting up there … O’Cal is good (for now) … we need OLine badly (IMNSHO) and I’d love to see that set for the next several years, including backups
we’ve been drafting DL for long enough at the expense of the OL, and as the talk of the draft is how deep the defense is this year, we can always snag one in 2nd … we truly need a dominant OLine, and you build thru the draft, not FA … get Okung and Iupati and after that I could care less who they get (wouldn’t at all mind Danario Alexander as we’re not about to get Bryant … at least I hope not, that would be such a waste of 1st round pick)

hi, Mo!

Pouncey
All the way, a great ball player, smart and has been starting since his freshman year at Florida. If we can get either Iupati or Pouncey I’ll be pretty darn happy.
O-line
There are good draft options at LT even if they can trade down. RG can be filled in the middle rounds—Eric Olsen of ND in the 5th. Waters to center. Re-sign Niswanger and Smith as backups and O’Callaghan at RT , Albert LG.
Johnson
Will be a great Guard in the NFL, he has played some tackle. We couldn’t go wrong if we get him with the lower second. I would take C Walton as well
I hope we get Pouncey or Walton in the draft.
Pouncey at 2A or Walton would probably need the 3rd. That will help a lot to shore up our line. Please quit saying Waters at center because I think he is almost done at guard. I hope we have one more good year, but he was starting to show his age this year.
Waters probably wont go anywhere. But, if Berry is gone, I think KC will trade down with someone like Buffalo to get an extra 2nd. They will probably grab McClain at #9. Use 2a for Pouncey, 2b for NT, 2c for SS.
That would fill in some MAJOR holes. I think Pioli will go after veteran WRs in FA. I do hope they re-sign Chambers, he was more fun to watch than Bowe.
Maybe Pioli should trade Bowe to the Lions for CJ..haha
