Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Chiefs Facing Decisions With 17 Free Agents

The Kansas City Chiefs are facing decisions with seven unrestricted free agents and ten restricted free agents. The biggest question marks are the unrestricted free agents.

Here they are (courtesy to Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com for doing the legwork):

Star-divide

S Mike Brown, WR Chris Chambers, WR Terrence Copper, TE Sean Ryan, OL Wade Smith, LB Mike Vrabel, WR Bobby Wade

I can see the Chiefs being interested in re-signing just about every player there, save Ryan, who was inactive for many of the contests in the second half of the season.

And for the restricted free agents:

OL Andy Alleman, QB Brodie Croyle, QB Matt Gutierrez, LB Derrick Johnson, LB Corey Mays, OL Ikechuku Ndukwe, OL Rudy Niswanger, OL Ryan O’Callaghan, S Jarrad Page, RB Kolby Smith

The Chiefs can keep these players at a relatively low cost. They can place a tender on each player - basically assign them a draft pick - and the higher the tender (or draft pick), the more money it'll cost.

I wouldn't keep Ryan, Wade, or Kolby Smith

Hopefully Gutierrez is replaced on the depth chart by a new project player.

I would be okay with letting them go. I wish things would have worked out for Kolby but I think hes done.

i really want O'Callaghan back next year

i think he was very serviceable and if we address the O-Line through FA, he could provide great depth.

Nice approach

And for the restricted free agents….The Chiefs can keep these players at a relatively low cost. They can place a tender on each player – basically assign them a draft pick – and the higher the tender (or draft pick), the more money it’ll cost.

Each of these players has some level of value except maybe K. Smith who contributed very little last season. But we have invested something in each of them and they will continue to develop. However, if we can get someone we really want in the draft by trading them for another pick….why not?

Question:

If Vrabel signs back on in New England, would that deminish that value of last year’s trade? If so, how significantly?

If he only plays one year in KC

I think personally it makes Matt Cassel for a 2nd rounder a lot less attractive. I want 2 more years out of Vrabel in a Chiefs uniform and I hope Pioli does too.

Well Vrabel said he would like to come back and

I think Pioli really likes him so I seeing him signing back on.

by tomahawk44 on Feb 10, 2010 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

I dont know

what he will want in the open market……but i dont think we should overpay for a player that will prolly play another 2 years……I dont think him around will make or break are defense in the next 2 years…..I feel like we can bring in a OLB that will provide a good pass rush.

I wouldnt look at it as it as less attractive….the balls obviously in pioli hand and if the price is right then he will resign him……i think it more of him being there and mentoring young LB than his actual play on the field.

But i would have traded cassel for a 2nd rounder straight up( i know it dosent look as good now because of the big deal) but a 2nd rounder for a a starting QB who had NFL experience is still a pretty solid deal….we could ahve gave up the 2nd rounder or drafted sanchez 3rd overall(costing us a pick and a bigger contract)…..i know sanchez has more potential but i would still take cassel for a 2nd over sanchez for the 1st.

by cassel4prez on Feb 10, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think so...

We got a year’s worth of him being a serviceable OLB while also having a guy who no doubt taught the young D a lot; and especially helped those who were transitioning to a new position. Make no mistake about it…we got our money’s worth out of Vrabel.

IF we can upgrade the OLB position and get a better player in there then im all for it……when the deal was done pioli knew he wasnt going to be around forever…..Vrabel is a very solid linebacker he does everything good but nothing really great, he is a good tackler and good and coverage, but dosent really provide a pass rush at a position that should be……that being said i do believe he will be back….I dont see him going back to NE.

To me 8 out of 17 are keepers:

S Mike Brown (yes), WR Chris Chambers (yes), WR Terrence Copper (NO), TE Sean Ryan (HELL NO), OL Wade Smith (maybe for depth), LB Mike Vrabel (Yes), WR Bobby Wade (Yes, if we don’t up grade via draft)

OL Andy Alleman (Of course), QB Brodie Croyle (Yeppers), QB Matt Gutierrez (I like the project idea, so no), LB Derrick Johnson (Sign him, trade him), LB Corey Mays (depth, yes), OL Ikechuku Ndukwe (could go either way, so no), OL Rudy Niswanger (depth at best, so no), OL Ryan O’Callaghan (definately), S Jarrad Page (HELL YES), RB Kolby Smith (Buh Bye)

That’s 8 resigned
5 maybes

I don't believe that draft position has anything to do with the arguement.

Yes he has played well for a 7th round pick. My orginal point was that Jared Page was the weak link at the safety position this year, not Mike Brown. Let us remember that once Jon McGraw took over for Page our secondary didn’t give up as many big plays.

I don’t know if Page was playing injured this past season, but I think that we need to upgrade FS, moreso than we do SS. Then again Page might show up next year playing top quality ball that we need at the FS position.

Go Chiefs!!!!

Copper was easily our best special teamer last year, those guys aren’t always replaceable. The 5th WR spot is almost always gonna be mainly used for Special Teams anyway and rarely see the field otherwise, I would definitely bring him back.

Resign or tender the rest and let them fight for a spot on the roster in camp. That should create competition at a few positions , something Pioli likes to do…….

Chambers and Smith have to be the priority

of the UFA list. We should also attempt to bring back all of the RFA list until they are beat out by better players.

We also might need to bring back Mike Brown, b/c we don’t have anyone else! I hope we can draft a replacement, though. Brown would be a fine backup.

Bringing back Vrabel, if productive, would be a bonus to the former trade, as I didn’t expect him to be here more than a year (or be very productive more than one year).

by VermeilLikesToCry on Feb 10, 2010 2:54 PM CST reply actions

Chambers, Wade Smith and Vrabel are the biggies, IMO.

Maybe see if you can get Mike Brown for another year. Wouldn’t mind seeing more out of Copper. Cut Bobby Wade’s non-pass catching ass. I think he’s pissed Haley off any ways. Not very impressed with Sean Ryan. Brad Cottam has more upside and Pope was pretty decent.

As for restricted guys…. resign Page for sure. A lot of upside there, plus he’s spoiled a Raiders’ victory at least three times. That’s gotta account for something. Dangle DJ on a hook to see if anyone bites. There could be a lot of trade value there. Mays adds good depth, so I’d like to see him back. The rest?…. meh.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

here i go...

Ryan, Wade, Guitierrez and Kolby Smith are goners. Easily replaced.
Mike Brown, Mays, Alleman, Ndukwe, and Rudy are on the bubble. Draft and free agency will determine their fates.
I’d keep Broydie, Page, Vrabel, W.Smith, Chambers and O’Callaghan for sure.
DJohnson is interesting. Could he get traded? I’d be ok with that. A 3rd rounder and bye bye DJ. But if he stays I’d be ok too. Don’t know why I have a soft spot for him. His value may never be higher that it is now as many people will remember his Denver performance. Just like i’ll never forget Brandon Carr’s Denver performance. A story for another day. Sorry, it gets me emotional just thinking about it.

they should at least make offers to everyone on the list except those two.

That keeps the Chiefs’ options open… you know pretty much what you’re getting from those guys if they come back, so IF a better player can be acquired, you can do so, and cut someone.

IF NOT, you roll with those guys in 2010, along with some select FAs and draft picks.

My Suggestions

S Mike Brown – cut

WR Chris Chambers – re-sign, but not for anything resembling starting WR money. He’s old and his production is unlikely to improve or stay the same next year.

WR Terrence Copper – re-sign only if no other options.

TE Sean Ryan – cut

OL Wade Smith – re-sign and give him a starting job unless someone is brought in who’s better.

 LB Mike Vrabel – re-sign

WR Bobby Wade – re-sign, but not for starting WR money. He’s a decent slot receiver at best.

OL Andy Alleman -re-sign for reserve money

Most of what you have I agree with except...
S Mike Brown – cut

resign and give him a starting job unless someone is brought in who’s better.

LB Derrick Johnson – re-sign and give starting LB spot

Need to see some consistency. Look to replace him and if he gets it together, great. But someone is waiting in the wings.

OL Rudy Niswanger – re-sign as for backup money or cut

I am not sure Wade could beat Niswanger out if both were competing at RG. But if we have him stay at Center…then I might agree.

S Jarrad Page – re-sign for starter money

I am shaky on this one. No real comment…other than shaky

I say re-sign everyone, except Ryan, if they agree to a reasonable deal. If they get beat out in camp, great, cut them. If not, at least they know the system.

that's what I'm saying

no need to get all “cut happy” now… don’t cut until you have to.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

how do you calculate those numbers?

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters

Some were indescriment (Sp?)

Derrick Johnson, Rudy Niswanger, and Jarad Page were hit with the 110% so if they were signed from another team we would receive compensation.

All those that I had at $1,100,000 is the minimum needed to receive any compensation.

Ndukwe and Guiterrez were arbitrary numbers I put up that I imagine no other team would want to spend… Guiterrez I would be willing to go as high as $1,100,000 just so we were to be compensated, yet if we lost him it really wouldn’t be any big deal.

Also the current salaries were from USA today. Also just because I am signing them to these contracts doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t be cut before training camp.

Go Chiefs!!!!

I'm not sure you can do that

Take Alleman the most you could pay him is salary x 1.3 if the CBA is not redone

I was not aware of that...

askthecommish.com has a bunch of info on all this, and I must have completely skipped over the 1.30% that you speak.

Go Chiefs!!!!

you think you could talk to my Chief about a raise for me? :)

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I'm willing to negotiate...

just make sure that you have plenty of BBQ to pay me once you hit it big!!!

Go Chiefs!!!!

Forget Mike Brown, I’m shocked that people actually think he is worth re-signing. Keep Chambers, W. Smith, Vrabel, DJ, K. Smith, Page, O’Callaghan, Ndukwe, Mays, Croyle and Gutz. Possibly Niswanger but only as a guard, not as a center.

Before we cut everyone.....

lets keep in mind that we have a staff now. A staff taht is know for getting the best out of players. We have lots of talented players that will benefit, we just dont know which ones yet. Tine will tell.
