Chiefs Add 3rd QB Tyler Palko To 53-Man Roster; Jackie Bates To IR
The Kansas City Chiefs made a number of roster moves on Wednesday which got kicked off with the news that CB Jackie Bates would be placed on injured reserve. Bates injured his knee two weeks ago -- which contributed to the Chiefs signing CB Mike Richardson -- and has now been placed on IR ending his season.
This created an open roster spot on the 53-man roster which will be filled by QB Tyler Palko, who was signed off the practice squad. Palko was with the team throughout training camp so he knows the system but it's still somewhat of a confusing move. The Chiefs have made it 12 games with just two quarterbacks. Why add one now?
The move on Palko created an open spot on the practice squad which will be filled by LB Micah Johnson. After the 2010 NFL draft, he signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent before being released in June. He later signed on with the Miami Dolphins before being released the second week of the season.
Surprised by any of these moves? I am a bit by the news that Palko has been added considering the Chiefs had been fine to this point with just two quarterbacks on the active roster.

Protection from poaching...
… is what this is about.
There are several teams at the bottom of the league who would be happy to steal a QB prospect off of another team’s Practice Squad late in the year.
Quality QB depth is extremely thin in the league. By placing Palko on the roster, he cannot be plucked away. Can be traded.
This is a good move.
Exactly
There are a couple teams thin at QB right now, (detroit, tennesee) it’s dangerous to keep a guy who had decent preseason snaps on the practice squad.
Ok, let's settle the NFL labor dispute with Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith in a one on one Oklahoma drill. First one to get a concussion loses.
Really?
You think they’re concerned about losing Palko? I had no idea he was a prospect, or quality depth.
I spilled spot remover on my dog... now he's gone.

Maybe the front office has talked with Croyle recently
And got the feeling that he won’t come back (or made up their minds they won’t offer to have him come back) since he’s an FA this off season.
So planning ahead, we have at least one backup for Cassel who knows the system. Even if he’s not a great backup, he’s better than nobody back there at all going forward.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
May just want to keep him on contract in anticipation of end of season when Brody walks
Palko knows our system and best one on practice squad to protect? Also going into playoff contention, keeps him off other teams wanting a peak at info?
More than anything, it keeps a team like Arizona from signing him.
It’s just a sign they like him dont want to see him get stolen as non-contenders begin preparing for next season.

that was my thought
He has to learn what brodie does so he can do it next year.

I'd hate for palko to be our #2 QB.

Palko
Do not be surprised if you see some sort of gimmick play with Palko involved.
Nah, he'll be the emergency #3 QB.
He won’t be on the 45 man roster.
I spilled spot remover on my dog... now he's gone.
Could it have to do with playoff eligibility?
Not sure about the rules regarding the playoff roster, but he might need to spend some time on the 53 to be eligible, just a guess. Insurance move, Brodie has a hang nail.
Not totally likely...
…but maybe also have a few trick plays they’ve been saving for an important game involving a lefty-QB in store for the Chargers?
AND, according to twitter, Matt Cassel is NOT practicing.
hopefully this means nothing…

Palko had a pretty good college career
And was given starting nod over Flacco before Flacco transferred
kentbabb Kent Babb
Cassel wasn’t in the conditioning zone or on the sidelines in the team’s indoor facility, from what I could tell.
uhhhhhh, seriously if he were to miss sunday....crushed
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
if he is not at facility, may be a family issue or something
Doubt if injury issue, but hopefully nothing serious with family, etc
yeah I dont like any of the possible situations...they all seem bad

Watch
Croyle or Palko come out and just light it up on the Chargers. That would bring up old topics most thought were dead.
really wouldnt for me...cassel is the guy period

Cassel IS the guy
but I feel good about Brodie as the backup. We could do a whole lot worse in that department. Hope he’s just getting an extra day off, though.

Im a BIG bates fan(by that I mean once he became a chief I followed him during the preseason)
hes now one more guy on IR that can play a big role next year, or at least be quality depth
you have mo leggs
there is Urban…
Cottam
gotta love that, good talent
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
I had forgotten about Mo Leggs
We do have some quality depth that should be back next year with Mo Leggs, Sheffield, and Cottam (I’m not sold on Urban). Pioli knows how to build a good team…
ah yes good one, sheffield is HUGE...he was going to be big in some nickel packages
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.

I think urban brings a reliable guy who can play ST and step up...sort of a copper...not a 2, but someone you want on your team

Cassel was at KC event yesterday with Thomas Jones
No indication of issues
thank you for that tidbit...makes my fear family problem...hope its all fine

Micah Johnson!
A couple of us have been calling for him since before last year’s draft.
He could be a diamond in the rough at the SILB position
It's all about the gameplan
Exactly my thoughts as i read it.
He’s a great SILB prospect.
Chiefs go 7-9 this year and 3-3 in the division.
We have a top 5 rushing attack and a bottom 10 pass attack. Charles and Bowe in the Pro Bowl.
We have a top 5 pass defense and a bottom 10 rush defense. Hali, Flowers, and Berry to the Pro Bowl.
by ChiefsfanJon on Dec 8, 2010 11:45 AM CST up reply actions
remember when we thought he could go in the 3rd round?
wonder why he hasn’t caught on yet?
It's all about the gameplan
I do remember that
And he signed with the Giants and i don’t think he works in a 4-3 at all he’s a little to slow. The Dolphins i think are pretty set at LB and saw him as expendable. I think in Crennel’s 3-4 he could become a very solid player.

yeah, I think he ran a 4.99 at the combine
a la Brandon Spikes… who is playing well as a 2 down, run stuffing, SILB in NE

Micah Johnson is a great pick up
I was surprised he hasn’t done anything yet. Awesome linebacker for Kentucky
was reading the cassel story below and missed it....very exciting pickup...bates was hurt, so we find a LB prospect and protect our tebow practice clone who knows too much

Damn that trip was more serious than we thought
Oh well we got Micah johnson he was a guy I liked preseason for us but knee injuries didn’t get him drafted. He might be an underrated pick-up when its all said and done.
Most teams carry 3 QBs
Maybe Haley is just finally comfortable enough with the rest of the roster (and healthy enough) that he could carry 3.
by VermeilLikesToCry on Dec 8, 2010 11:47 AM CST reply actions
Plus, he may want to give Cassel some rest...
if they clinch early. And you don’t want Brokie as your only guy in that instance.
I spilled spot remover on my dog... now he's gone.
Sounds like a solid pickup from the scouting report
I’d be happy to see him take Mays’s spot next season. Johnson and Greenwood could both provide some solid quality depth at a bargain price.

I bet if we look back at last year, Matt had December 8 off also
But maybe he is taking it off for my birthday

Also, we may be looking ahead to last of season if we secure division
We will possibly sit Matt or limit is participation towards end of game and would need a backup to come into game if Brody had issue or inj during game as would not want to bring Cassel back into game…all coincidence of adding Palko and father’s death anniversary I am sure
Pioli just needs to go across the parking lot and walk out with Pat White after noogyin' Dayton Moore into submission

make them prepare for Palko
a good way to prepare for Palko is to set up the jugs machine and aim it directly at the DBs
(in case you missed that, I’m saying Palko is terrible)
It's all about the gameplan
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this isn't even on their radar.
I spilled spot remover on my dog... now he's gone.
Playoff insurance?
Palko has been around, but might as well spend a bit more time with him going into the last four games of the season. Chances are Cassel plays through the whole season. But if something were to happen, you’d hate to have to pull in a backup off the street to play the most important position in the most important games of the year.
