Dwayne Bowe A No Show Against The Denver Broncos
After putting together record breaking numbers over the last seven games, you'd think the Kansas City Chiefs could expect some production from Dwayne Bowe against the Denver Broncos, right?
Wrong. Bowe was shut out, zero yards on zero catches, by Denver Broncos' CB Champ Bailey. Bailey truly dominated Bowe today, with Matt Cassel only even targeting Bowe three times the entire game.
This is in direct contrast to Bowe's first performance against the Broncos in 2010, where he caught 13 passes for 186 yards. Also, you can throw in two touchdowns there. Bowe was also targeted 18 times in the Chiefs/Broncos first meeting, six times more than he was this afternoon.
After the game, Bowe said that the Broncos had "a nice little game plan" for him. Bowe said Denver obviously paid extra attention to him throughout the game, relative to their first meeting in November.
So Chiefs fans, how do we judge Dwayne Bowe on this game? Shut down game plan to go along with a shut down corner good enough for you? It is for me.

Meh
Besides Carr’s play, and obviously the win, I’m not taking much from this game.
Go get em next week Dwayne Bowe Bright.

Carr's play
And the fact that we’re starting to blitz Arenas more often :)
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Well Bowe got shut down, ok that sucks
for my fantasy team. But the Chiefs won, thanks to our pass defense/pass rush. Plus San Diego is down 21-3!
Opened up the field for other guys which, if we weren't shooting ourselves in the foot, can be just as valuable.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
He might not have showed up in the stat book
but he did have several great outside blocks to help the running game
Bailey is a HoF corner
I’m Not surprised or upset. He drew the coverage off mccluster and our other receivers, and helped open up the run game. It’s a team effort.

Balogna
Bailey pulled every sly trick in the book…the dive he took on the offensive pass interference was Oscar-worthy. It happened right in front of us, and that flag was worse than the Andre Johnson / Flowers crap.
And, just to be fair, I will point out that Denver knew they would not win this game if they did not stop Bowe…they had either Bailey and a LB bracketing him or Bailey with a safety over the top on nearly every play.

One PI call against Bowe
Doesnt change the fact that Bailey shut him down the rest of the game. I don’t agree with the call either, but you’re out of your mind if you think he isnt good enough to contain him.
by SoCalChief17 on Dec 5, 2010 4:46 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
If Bailey is good enough to contain Bowe
why did Denver use two guys on Bowe the entire game?
Bailey was great, and is good, but the Donkeys knew at 6:00 this morning that they would be doubling Bowe – they did it from the first snap (and I watched Bowe on every play)

I dunno what youre Tryin to say
That champ didn’t do anything or what? Watch the game, because he did. Yeah he had a lot of help, but I wouldnt expect anything less.

On the other side
Carr played out of his freaking mind today, and he didn’t have any help on Lloyd for most of the day. Game ball should go to that guy.
Here's my take
A) Chiefs win. Stats are for losers.
B) As gochiefs21 said, he had some great blocks in the run game.
C) A lot of other guys were able to get catches cause he was locked up.
D) He’s not complaining about how many times he was targeted. The Bowe of last year would have.
E) The Chiefs won!
Bowe
is it possible that the extra time game planning for Bowe detracted from other planning for Denver? Denver may have shut Bowe down but didn’t really get much else done besides the run game. Collectively Denver had poor game planning IMO.
I just want bowe to get to 1000 yds
especially know that it seems the Casshole has almost surfaced again
really? you break out the ridiculous nickname after we win our third in a row?

that sack he took was casshole-ish
that’s why I said Almost, and he had to bad passes behind open guys, one to T-Mo and the other to Bowe
Not cool.

Wouldn't Go Name-Calling...
but Cassel did have an off game. He didn’t look like the guy that was calm, cool, and collected the last few games. He looked a little flustered, a little rushed, and a little inaccurate. I love Cassel though and have no doubt he’ll be back on his game next week. A 2-game lead in the division, I am still reeling….
2010 Chiefs are on the rise. This is the most excited I've been since 'Nam...

Every QB looks that way once in a while
I’m banking on a bounce back game next week.
Irish, that ridiculous nickname has to go.
It’s absolutely juvenile to call a man who’s represented himself with nothing but class for the Chiefs organization, a childish name like that. Even if he was playing like Derrick Anderson it doesn’t validate that kind of crap. This guy isn’t flipping off fans or screaming at coaches. By all accounts he’s a decent guy who’s playing some damn good football and has lead the team to an 8-4 record. Yet folks like you are still waiting to pounce and run the guy out of town because he was sacked trying to make a play. Grow up, there isn’t a QB in the league that doesn’t make a few mistakes a game.
I’m sure you’d love it if millions of people were watching your every move and criticizing you for every little mistake you make. I’m also sure, given your use of that nickname, that you’d handle yourself with much less class than Cassel has.

Shows how big Bowe is to the offense
Only 10 points without Bowe’s production
This game made the Koolaid taste bad.
Without Bowe, the Chiefs looked pretty one dimensional. The only problem with that is they weren’t getting it done. Yes the Chiefs won and I’m happy for that and I would like to focus on the win. However, moving forward, if other teams do this, what does this mean for the rest of the team? The Chiefs pulled it out when they needed to but winning 10-6 wasn’t exactly convincing. I hope this was just a fluke and Bowe gets back to catching TDs. Thank God Champ can only play for one team. Great win and here’s to the bolts losing today!!!!
Go Chiefs!!!!
They didn't look one dimensional
They were a Moeaki miscue, a Barry Richardson miscue, a Copper borderline no-call hold, and McCluster fumble from scoring a lot more than 10 points (likely 24). The offense was sloppy, but Bowe’s absence hardly killed us.

Totally rec this comment
This is the kind of post that I don’t understand. Aren’t we, at 8-4 with a two game lead in the division, beyond Kool aid at this point? Yes, the Chiefs have made some mistakes. Yes, they do have some bad plays. At the beginning of the season, a lot of fans were saying that if the Chiefs could just get to average they would be happy. I think the Chiefs have exceeded that expectation. With four games to play, we have already gauranteed ourselves better than a losing season. Just exactly how many posts did I see before the season that the Chiefs were a six win team this year and anything more than that was gravy? I remember several. Suddenly we find ourselves dependent on a WR who many wanted traded before the season started, and when he fights double coverage all day only to have a single catch we become one dimensional?
The Chiefs pulled it out when they needed to but winning 10-6 wasn’t exactly convincing.
How many convincing wins do you need before you can call our wins convincing? How do you define convincing? The 2001 Patriots scored just over 23 points per game vs. their opponents who scored 17 points per game. That is a 6 points per game average margin. That was a Super Bowl winning team. Would you say that they were convincing wins?
So far this season, through 12 games, the Chiefs have scored an average of 24.6 points per game vs. their opponents scoring 19.75. That is a difference of 4.8 points per game on average. Don’t be surprised if it comes out to a lot closer to six points per game by years end. The point here is that a win is a win. No matter how convincing, without wins you do not advance. Do not grade the team on points scored, grade them on games won. The last time I checked, it wasn’t the team that scores the most points on the year that makes the playoffs, rather it is the one that has the best won-loss record. That is why they play the games after all. Many wins equate to things that are never seen on the scoreboard. This is why it is possible for a less talented team that plays more like a team to beat out a team that is more talented but plays like a sandlot full of individual efforts.

Thats an interesting idea OC....but....let me ask you this
If we had a chance to trade 2012 1st and 3rd round pick for either Larry Fitzgerald or Champ Bailey….who would you go for?
Team Berry
Interesting but possible
The Chiefs have enough money under the salary cap to land both players next season.
by Chiefsfan6242 on Dec 5, 2010 4:40 PM CST up reply actions
How could we land Fitz?
im assuming your talking about a trade because hes not a FA next year like Bailey is

And i doubt the Cardinals would talk trade about Fitz
by drew.bouchard on Dec 5, 2010 4:44 PM CST up reply actions
If they're smart (not saying that they are)
the Cardinals would talk trade for anybody on their team…that’s what horrible teams with a few great players should do.

larry fitz?
champ is at the end of his career.
pretty easy decision.

tell that to Neil Smith and Casey Wiegmann
by Chiefsfan6242 on Dec 5, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions
Or Donovan McNabb. I'm not saying it never happens, but it's rare for a reason.
Plus I’m fairly certain those two were signed in free agency, not traded. You can’t control where a player goes if they aren’t under contract. The question was would we trade for Champ Bailey. I think it’s unlikely.
agreed....with carr, flowers and arenas
there is no reason to ever trade for champ. Berry can also play corner if needed.

It also seemed like they were trying to force feed Dex in the offense on some plays
which I think stole targets from bowe
I worry about Dex role in the O
Hes obviously super talented but it seems like were struggling to get him the ball

So...
I guess we are going to have to wait till next year for McCluster to morph into Wes Welker haha
Team Berry
Huh?
Bailey truly dominated Bowe today, with Matt Cassel only even targeting Bowe three times the entire game.
Bowe was also targeted 18 times in the Chiefs/Broncos first meeting, six times more than he was this afternoon.
I spilled spot remover on my dog... now he's gone.
He was targeted 18 times the first game
Whch is 6 times the amount he was today. 6*3=18.

You know what
Credit bailey for a good game. Think I also saw a safety cheat over at times to help. Either way proves kc isnt a one trick pony as they still one. Talk about the d that shut down one

he had a couple catches nullified

Trade off from last game vs. Denver: Bowe shut out, KC wins
I’m not saying Bowe doesn’t help KC win. Heck, even without any catches, he helped some today. But given the choice between double-digit catches and almost 200yds. in a loss and 0 for 0 in a win, I’ll take the latter every time.
Don’t worry, Bowe. I’ve never been your biggest fan, and have often been your quickest critic, but I don’t hold this game against one of the game’s best corners against you, especially considering you and your team won the game.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
Did Bailey have a tackle?
sometimes you gotta do a little decoy work from time to time
more of a great game by Bailey
than Bowe not showing up. the offensive pass interference call on Bowe was crap too.
bad breaks
If McDaniels doesn’t throw the challenge flag, then Bowe has a catch on our first drive. If the refs aren’t blind morons determined to keep Denver in the game, then Bowe has a huge catch late.
Sometimes you don’t get the breaks, that’s all it was today. We won, which is all that matters.
by Offense of the 70s on Dec 5, 2010 5:15 PM CST reply actions
Good enough for me, Chris!
If the Donkeys want to focus on Bowe and shut him down, fine – the Chiefs won and that is the most important stat!
good sign
Chiefs can now apparently move the emphasis around, to and from signature players, and win games. Typically only top teams can make that happen and still win.

I'm with you Chris
They not only had a HOF corner on him, but were providing help all day. Not many receivers will be able to deal with that. You could tell they were helping a lot on him with the way the underneath routes were open constantly.
Add that into Cassel admitting he was looking away from Bailey and we’ve got a “no big deal” situation here. If it happens again next week… then I’ll worry.
To be honest, I’m glad he had a tough game finally. I want him pissed and going crazy all week in practice wanting to get back out there and pick up where he left off.
