An Open Letter to the Chiefs Community.

I feel like these two teams are connected in a way. And not one of rivalry.

During the Marvin Lewis era, no AFC team outside of the brutal North has shown such significance to the Bengals like the Chiefs. It started in 2003 when the Bengals were the team to knock the Chiefs off the track to perfection, after Chad Ochocinco (then Johnson) made the predictions saying such. And it continued to this past season 2009, where the Bengals clinched the AFC North after defeating the Chiefs 17-10.

And then yesterday, where the Bengals repaid the favor by beating the San Diego Chargers 34-20, giving the Chiefs the AFC West by knocking the Chargers completely out of playoff contention.

Congrats, Kansas City Chiefs. If there's ever a team that deserves the playoffs this year, it's you guys (well, you and Jacksonville, but I sadly doubt they join you in the postseason unless the Titans pull off some miracles...that's not counting them out surprisingly), the only team to break the stranglehold held by the dynasties of the divisions: Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, New England, and San Diego. It's safe to say most Bengals fans will be rooting for you in the postseason.

Congratulations, good luck, and you're welcome.

-Doc Scratch, Cincy Jungle.

P.S. I read your "game threads" for it yesterday and was really thankful for the support but I saw a few of you referring to us by that moniker that the cruel media and dumb Steelers fans have given to us. While it may seem apt, none of us appreciate it. "Bungals/Bungles" is not a nice word (excuse me while I go wash my mouth out with soap).

P.P.S. Kansas Cincy. I like it.

You're a classy fellow. Stop by anytime sir!

I am very anti-steelers and being that I have a great deal of hope for your long suffering franchise. Its never a good thing when a franchise is constantly down for a long period, and except for last year its been rough for you fellas. Mucho gracias for your kind words sir, you guys have fans in Chiefs land.

In addition to the links

you mentioned above, in 06 it was a Bengals D-lineman that knocked Trent Green out of the game in the season opener. I still get sick just thinking about how hard his head hit the ground

First good thing to come to KC from Cinci in my recent memory.

Still does not make up for the dirty shot on Trent Green.

Thanks

and Tell Carson thanks for having one of this best games. That is amazing with rookies and no names catching his throws. Was a real interesting game to watch. I agree, Bungals is just stupid just like when we are called the “Queefs”.

Since Cassel was Palmer's backup at USC and the two are good friends

I’m sure Carson had a little extra motivation to go out there and play his best game. I bet he and Matt talked after the game and that conversation included a “thank you” from Cassel.

Yeh, but we've been decimated terribly by injuries this year and I don't wanna see guys go down like that again.

I like Kansas Sensi

even better. Tell us, as a Bengals fan what do you expect your off-season to look like? Will you guys jettison Palmer? Re-sign Ocho? Will you guys be drafting AJ Green? I really admire what you guys have done in the draft the last few years. For having the smallest scouting department in the league y’all have done quite well.

Also, how is Chase Coffman’s development coming along?

by KansasCityShuffle on Dec 28, 2010 5:56 AM CST reply actions

I find it humorous that people tell me not to judge Simpson and Caldwell based on one or two games

but then a majority of the site seems to be just as up and down on Palmer. One minute, people want him canned, the other, people are praising him or saying how much faith they have in him (with a new OC but that’s a given). Honestly, at this point, I doubt he goes, unless Mikey finally decides to step down and the new GM/HC thinks he’s not worth his contract.

Ocho’s a different story though. With the recent youth movement and Palmer having his best day without him, a lot of it is looking like we won’t need Ocho here at all. Some want him (who wouldn’t want a sideline wizard who could pass on those kind of skills to the younger guys?), others find him a waste of time. I like his antics but I think that he should only come back if he refocuses himself on the game.

A week ago, I thought A.J. Green was a sure thing. This week, I’m not so sure. I like entering the draft with options and I think we could really do BPA as long as it’s not a QB (I still think it’s a bit early on those guys but then again, nothing in next year’s draft really wows me). Who knows, we’ll see. A lot depends on that new CBA with the new rookie wage scale, I’d imagine.

Coffman’s had little progression. Considering our current DLine’s sudden improvement as well as Simpson and Caldwell, I have no doubt in my mind Chase Coffman is merely being buried by Reggie Kelly on the depth chart and once Kelly retires, Coffman could be huge.

And yeh, our past couple of drafts have been great, they’re probably the sole reason why I want Marvin to stay in some semblance. That’s something we lose when he leaves.

Coffman ... I so loved that guy when he was with my Mizzou Tigers, was hoping the Chiefs would grab him

I think he has a ton of upside potential … hope he does well for the Bengals

A lot of people are drooling for the double TE sets.

Most of us were surprised as hell when Coffman got cut on cutdown day this year. He made it to the practice squad and is currently back on the 53-man roster (because the coaching staff finally realized Daniel Coats couldn’t catch).

I still think Coffman’s got a little ways to go before he actually gets put on the roster but if the Bengals could pull off something like the Patriots have going with Hernandez and Gronkowski, I’d be quite happy with that. A group of Simpson, Caldwell, Shipley, Coffman, Gresham, Scott, and Benson would be great as the only one with a fraction of an ego is Benson but his escapades in Chicago seem to have humbled him.

Joe Reedy: "Supposedly Marvin could not find his flag to challenge the call. I am not kidding. #bengals"

by Doc Scratch on Dec 28, 2010 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

Very possibly.

And I honestly hope Marvin becomes our GM because he’s the only man to have any semblance of success with Mike Brown both in terms of records and player management. His drafts have been spectacular though his FA signings have been average or worse (Antonio Bryant and Antwan Odom come to mind) probably because the three scouts Mike Brown currently employs are not enough to scout the entire college system, so Marvin and his coaching staff have to do more of it.

But yes, in most likelihood, Marvin’s contract is ending and I don’t see him staying even though he actually sounds like he wants to stay…for some reason.

three scouts??

That sounds to be far too few. However, as I say that I have no idea how many the Chiefs have. I’m sure it’s a state secret!

thanks for the kind words, Doc ... much appreciated

I was surprised at the Bengals upset of the Chargers, and though it rendered our upcoming game with Oakland “all but meaningless” it was nice to know the AFC West title was ours at last

for the record: I too frown on “name calling” on here (or elsewhere) … terms such as Bungals, Faders, etc have no place here, certainly not for a fanbase that likes to think of itself as being amongst the classiest around

you’ve certainly shown your class and character, Doc … props to the Bengals for a strong finish, hopes for a better 2011 and again, thanks for coming over with kind word for the Chiefs

peace

I call the Steelers the Squeelers.

Ravens Ratbirds, etc.

I tend to refer to people outside my division with some semblance of respect but division rivals are certainly not free of it.

Joe Reedy: "Supposedly Marvin could not find his flag to challenge the call. I am not kidding. #bengals"

by Doc Scratch on Dec 28, 2010 11:07 AM CST up reply actions

I call them the Stealers

because so many of their rings were outright stolen. I’ve never seen a team that, over decades, gets so many calls in their favor. The offensive PI call against SEA in SB40 was among the most atrocious I ever witnessed.

All their crying about "Deebo" and friends reminds me of squealing.

Hence, Squeelers.

But Stealers was one I had thought of earlier for the exact same reasons but it’s a homonym so no one could tell the difference when it’s being said.

Well, If Brodie Croyle had gone there...

….he’d had made a great towel boy in the locker room showers.
I bet he could fire the towels into the rolling cart from as far as 5 feet away…..
…..course after the 3rd broken bone USC would have had to install thousands of the little shower floor anti-slip pink flowers to keep him off the injury list.

Well....

He did only hit 56% of his passes. That’s pretty bad, especially for a college QB.

by MNchiefsfan on Dec 28, 2010 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

but he also passed a couple of big names on the Bama list along the way ...
In Croyle’s four years playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team, he set numerous school records, and was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Croyle led the Crimson Tide to the 2006 Cotton Bowl Classic and was named the game’s offensive MVP

In his final season at Alabama, Croyle attempted a then-school-record 190 passes without an interception and became the first Alabama quarterback to start every game in a season since 1996 and his 2,499 passing yards in 2005 were the highest single-season total in Alabama’s school history

that school hisotry includes Bart Starr, Joe Namath and Kenny Stabler … not a bad list there … just saying he had a pretty decent few years in college
