This is in response to an earlier fan post that brought up the situation where Haley pulled Cassel for Brodie. I want to say that we have no idea why he really pulled Cassel, but I think that it was typical of the the regime as a whole.
I believe that Haley is doing what he has done all year. One of the biggest differences between the new regime and the old is their ability to prepare for the future. This year the future is the SB.
I thought last year was a season where both Pioli and Haley were trying to see what they had to work with. They knew we weren't that good, but they needed to see what we had so that they could make the right moves this year. That led us to an excellent draft and an excellent offseason as a whole. Don't think for a second that they aren't looking at the superbowl this year.
I think that Haley is trying to give other teams the least amount of film as possible on our main weapons. I think it is an brilliant move. Our main offensive weapons are Charles, Bowe, and Cassel on offense. If an opposing team looks at our tape, they will have twice the tape on TJ because he has gotten the majority of the carries. Not a whole lot to look at on Charles when trying to prepare. Bowe only had so many targets the last few games, and I don't believe that was coincidence. Cassel is the QB,so there is already plenty of tape, but why give the enemy any more? Not to mention that Brodie needs the reps.
On the defensive side of the ball, I remember earlier in the year when people were saying "Why aren't we blitzing Berry and Arenas? I thought they were supposed to be great at blitzing?" Maybe, we were saving a few things.
The Jets are the best example of this right now. Other teams have figured them out late in the season. There is a chance they might not make the playoffs because of it.
Remember early in the season when some were calling for Cassel's head because he could only sort of manage a game? "Hey , the coaching staff didn't even trust him. They don't even want him throwing the ball. That's why we run all the time." "And look at Bowe. All he does is block." Could it be that we were tricking our opponents? Other teams started stacking the box and daring us to beat them passing, and that's what we did. We were able to change strategies mid season and it caught teams off guard. We are still breaking new wrinkles out deep in the season. The Jets have been doing the same things since last year, and everyone is exposing them. They are going to have to change what they are doing because teams have figured them out. So far, thank God we don't have that problem.
We might get beat, but it is not likely to be because we were doing the same things over and over and other teams figured us out. I think we can expect a very vanilla game against Oakland next week.
I don't expect us to get beat. I have expected great things from us, and I am getting them. Back in the playoffs as division champs, and now, on to the super bowl. Go Chiefs!
