Ask A Titans Fan

Aloha my misguided (lovable though) worshipers of the Kansas City Chefs. I noticed that no one from MCM had thrown up a Q&A section on your site and I'd like to be the one to change that.

About the game: should be an awesome game to watch, some throwback stuff with two classic AFL franchises. Some strong running games, one team in contention playing a team that was in contention for all of seven weeks, hell of an atmosphere folks.

Fire away, ask anything you want to ask but keep it clean.

You like CJ we like JC more.

How much better would CJ be if he had another HB in the backfield like Thomas Jones?

I ask myself this a lot

and I still come up with the same answer every time. even if there were another talented back on the roster, they wouldn’t be getting carries. see White, LenDale (09 edition) , Blount, LeGarrette, even Javon Ringer (he’s an unknown but I think he’s a pretty good player from what he’s shown us, just needs to develop some patience). the coaching staff relies on CJ a whole lot, even with LenDale in the backfield last year, he got the ball a ludicrous amount of times. White’s not a world-beater, but he was a serviceable situational back and was coming off a season in which he averaged 4 yards a carry and scored 15 TDs in platoon duty, yet he was still completely ignored.

too bad (for the Titans)

using both Jones and Charles has paid huge dividends for the Chiefs … both are “fresh” which is more than most players are at this time of year (a full season will take its toll on players, esp RBs) … we (and the coaching staff) feel that splitting time between two backs is a major factor in them being so fresh and full of energy, and the reason Charles has enough in the tank to reel off an 80 yd run at the end of a game to seal it (as he did against the Rams last week)

no disrespect to Charles

but I’m not sure he’s built to handle a whole season’s worth of carries. CJ proved he can handle it last year. he might have lost a step this year, but he’s still one of the top 5 fastest guys in the NFL and showed that he can still do it as well as anyone against the Chargers this year (here’s your evidence)

I think JC could do the same.

I guess will see who is still productive 3yrs from now.

define "productive"

I think CJ can rip off 1,000 yard campaigns for the next 4-5 years barring serious injury. in fact, I expect it. now, if he were to be platooned, I’d be ok with that too (granted, it’d have to be for the right player, none of this free agent mentor crap, I want fresh meat.)

Charles had 1000 in half a season last year ... this year he has what, 1300 or whatever on "limitied touches"

plus 800 for Jones … both are still fresh this late in the year … I like our system

it all depends on the QB situation and how good our next draft is.

if we snag an instant-impact OLB who can cover or a QB then we could be a wild-card team next year, division winners the year after.

It’s a shame, because VY is the perfect type of QB to play with CJ. The only QB/RB duo in the pro’s fast enough to run the option… It was fun to watch.

It's a legit play, with the athletes to execute it,

but it does seem like teams that can execute THAT aren’t as good at executing other things, especially in the passing game. And that seems to be the issue in the NFL. Defenses can gear up to stuff the option and you need to be able to punish THAT with some quick, pinpoint passing.

the LenWhale has moved on

his time in TN is over, too much off the field BS. I’d really like to draft someone like John Clay in the 3rd round. if he gets healthy you need about 8 guys to tackle him. 2011 is a crummy year for backs in the draft though, maybe another year or two of the Ringer experience and then move on to another experimental back. Stafon Johnson is still on this team for anyone who’s curious.

I remember making this case 10 or 15 years ago on early blogsites.

Nobody ever paid attention. It was all about “team chemistry” and a ‘back needing the carries to get into rhythm. It was nonsense then, and it’s nonsense now. In such a violent sport, you really need the #2 and #3 guys to see the field every week, at virtually every position.

Now I’m on the “cutting edge” of making the same sorts of claims for OL, which is the sacred cow of continuity.

hi daniel, thanks for coming over ... better late than never, eh?

one wag (here) suggested that Birtt might be “tired and worn out” from his new “early Xmas present” … will he be so worn out from the “ordeal” that he loses a step or two in the game? and if he does lose a step, will anyone even notice?

just how good IS he?

followup … is Collins good enough to get the ball to Britt and others should the Chiefs “stack the box” and shut down CJ? (which is most likely the plan)

you remember Britt's 200+ yard game against the Eagles this year, correct?

well that was after he had been out partying until 3 A.M. that previous Friday. we know this because my man was in a bar fight too. I’m not terribly worried about his fatigue levels, chances are he’ll get some good rest upon arriving to KC, won’t have to deal with the little one too much if he’s in a different city right?

my verdict on Britt is that he’s simply very good. the offense pretty clearly goes through him this year, they went through a streak where they didn’t score a single touchdown for 15 quarters or something like that during his injury and as soon as he got back they dropped 30 on the Colts and the Texans. granted, those are some bad D’s, but keep in mind that they didn’t score any against the exact same Texans team a couple of weeks before that.

Collins arm is completely shot. he really is incapable of getting it 40+ on a line like he used to do in his younger days. that being said, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. in his best games this year, he’s simply thrown it as far as he could and let Kenny Britt adjust to it. seems to work pretty well though. stacking the box hasn’t really worked all that well this year, everyone’s trying to do it and CJ still has the most 100+ yard games this season (8 for you stats guys) and is boasting a healthy 4.3 YPC (I think it’s 4.3…)

yah, the Texans are an anomaly … capable of scoring 30 or 40 on any given week, but then giving up 40 or 50 at the oddest times to the oddest teams

Britt’s a beast, for sure … as for the box stack, we know it all too well here: we’ve seen almost noghting but that for the last several weeks, and though Charles doesn’t have a lot of 100 yd games, he DOES lead the league in YPC (some ungodly number like 6.5 yds every time he gets the ball, on average (and yeah, we think he’s as good as CJ)

We had a similar incident with Shannon Sharpe, when KC came up with the plan of beating his ass at the line.

He deliberately dove at the back of Chiefs LB Wayne Simmons, in a temper tantrum that was rewarded by penalizing Simmons, and forcing KC to back off on the “mug the TE” tactic, which was working marvelously well. If Simmons was cheating, then flag him for it. But Sharpe should’ve been ejected from that game for losing his cool. At least Johnson was ejected.

he's a decent coach

but that’s where the praise stops. he settles for mediocrity: 5 out of the last 7 seasons he’s had a 5 game losing streak. any other coach in the league would be gone after 2 years like that. Fisherball is dead, he pisses off a lot of players, he won’t putt Britt and Moss on the field at the same time because they “play the same position”, and basically, it was his and Vince’s ego that ruined this season.

I love Mike Heimerdinger though! much, much love to the Dinger.

interesting

I remember a couple of yrs ago when the Titans started off horribly, it was a “pep talk” by Fisher at mid-year that helped turn the team around, and they reeled off 6 or 7 Ws in a row

and it was Fisher who was coach when the team made the Super Bowl (ancient history, I know, but still)

ego clash with Young? hmmmm … in my mind, the coach SHOULD have the biggest ego on the team … he’s the coach, the boss … the players are supposed to do what he wants them to do (that’s what they get paid for)

FIsher was a douche to Young from day one

the coaches that have big egos set themselves up for big falls. they should only be that way as long as it doesn’t hurt the team. I don’t support Young’s antics, but he certainly could have been handled better and I hope that he goes somewhere where his talent can be maximized.

if you mean last year, they basically played a bunch of crappy teams and then, to keep their playoff hopes alive, they needed to beat the Charges at home. so much for that. 7 straight wins doesn’t mean much when you lose your first 6.

the Super Bowl argument is dead, that was a beautiful year but let’s be honest, they shouldn’t have been there. he needed the help of the most improbable play in NFL history just to get out of the wild card round.

I think old-school guys don’t know where the line is between holding people accountable and verbal abuse. Knowing how many times I profited from a swift kick in the ass, it’s easy for ME to forget how it feels to be on the receiving end, and that there are other ways to make a point or teach someone a lesson. We expect these million-dollar players to strap it on, regardless, but these high-paid coaches need to be professionals, too.

by hmills110 on Dec 25, 2010 8:26 PM CST up reply actions

so

where do you come down on Haley? Personally, I’ve liked him from Day 1 including his hard ass establishing of order and accountability. Of course, last year, many of our loyal fans and “loyal” media didn’t like him because of that. Of course, now we see the plan working and Haley adjusting to it accordingly and yet still maintaining accountability. I would call Haley “old school”. Although, I will concede that I also believe he is a really smart cookie that understands the modern player psyche as well.

I love me some Shaun Smith!

by kabrink on Dec 26, 2010 12:00 AM CST up reply actions

I, for one, think Haley gets it.

You have to use all methods of motivation—trick AND treat—in order to get through to people. He earned a masters in old school football from Parcells, did grad work in players’ coaching with Jauron, and an applied internship in both with Coach Whiz.

I’ve seen him work the gamut of motivational techniques since he arrived—and I think it’s working. He’s seen what’s worked and what hasn’t and is willing to adjust to get a winning result.

To kabrink and go_saleamua: I've liked him from the start, too.

No off-the-wall me-me crap in press conferences. I think he’s smart about how he calls players out on the practice field. Couple that with NEVER calling out players in the media. It’s a fine art to be tough on your guys in practice, without crossing the line into self-aggrandizing bullshit, but I think Haley knows where that line is.

He’s also been smart about not thinking he’s the smartest guy at everything. He (and Pioli) have built a great supporting cast in coaching and training positions. That first year was sure tough, because the culture was upside-down and there were guys who didn’t get it. Many/most of us questioned attitude over sheer talent, but the attitude AND the talent BOTH improved.

Remember all the talk about “micro-managing?” That first year, he HAD to dabble and experiment and meddle, because the mgmt/coaching team was still being built. I think we can see, now, how he wants to be HC and MANAGE the team. He delegates to guys he can trust, and this leaves him free to oversee the whole operation (and meddle, when he thinks he needs to). After the 2010 turnaround, he’ll have a lot more authority to stick his oar in wherever he thinks he needs to, without being questioned. It’s his JOB to make sure everybody’s doing their job.

The neatest thing, to me, is he’s more about GETTING it right than about BEING right. If your focus is to get it right, then it’s no big deal to eat your portion of shit and make a change, even if it flies in the face of your carefully crafted plans that didn’t translate to the playing field. Looking for versatility and intelligence in his players also lets him make those changes on the fly, and we’ll see more and more of that. We’ll see how long he can keep it up, after Weis and Crennel move on.

I think Fisher is a good coach.

IMO the Titans haven’t had a good QB since McNabb. Fisher is a old school coach who would rather have a pocket QB instead of someone like Vince, and if i was a Titan fan I’d be hoping for a QB in the draft. While Vince played well this season before the injury where is he now, that IMO is the price you pay when depending on a scrambling QB to lead your team.

Are you happy with Vince as your QB for the future or would you be ok if the Titans picked a QB with their first pick coming up in the next draft.

by KeyboardGato on Dec 26, 2010 3:39 AM CST up reply actions

sorry I missed this one

I would only be happy with Vince at QB if he proved through profuse apology, hard work, maturity that he can lead a team. I’m in the minority though, most people want NOTHING to do with him and want both him and Fisher on the next bus to Denver.
if we don’t keep him, I want the real McNabb on a 1 year deal to groom a guy like Pat Devlin or something like that. also; Vince was not a scrambler this year. he was a pocket passer to a fault. whether that was part of the game plan or just his own decision is up for debate.

Michael Vick has found pretty good balance between Pocket and Scramble.

It’s a development in his game that we never quite saw from Randall Cunningham. But the fact is that the QB commands the entire field from the middle, so there are advantages to standing in there. But not many coaches seem to know how to train up their QB and their team to be good at pocket-passing AND to make the most out of broken plays. It’s hard to draw those up, and your whole team needs to know when and how to take advantage of the extra time these special QBs buy for you.

With Cassel, KC seems to have a good balance, there. Cassel’s learning to stand in there and learning when to break it off without panicking. Fast as he is, Michael Vick can still throw it faster than he can run it, so looking for the opportunities down the field AFTER you’ve abandoned the pocket is a great development in HIS game.

Earl Cambell or CJ?

Who’s the best the Houston/Tenn franchise has ever had?

(Hopefully someone older than a current college student can answer this one.)

by cpa913 on Dec 24, 2010 11:37 PM CST reply actions

I'm younger than a current college student, but I'm gonna give it a crack.

I think that there’s no question it’s Campbell. he literally defined what it means to be a power back. when it comes to listing the best players in franchise history, it’s Campbell, Moon and Matthews. any order of those 3 will suffice. CJ may get there one day, he had the best single season of any Oiler/Titan player ever, but Campbell had the best career for any player, if not any back in the 50-something years of Oiler/Titan football.
I’m sure some of our more “experienced” members will be over tomorrow to offer some insight.

I used to love that old song you guys had when I was a kid...

“Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers number 1….” I’m sure it sounds pretty corny now, but who cares? I was a kid back then.

Yeah, Cambell, Moon, the House of Pain, Jerry Glanville, Buddy Ryan, etc., etc., lot’s of memories there.

Of course my best memory was Joe Montana throwing the winning touchdown pass to beat the heavily favored Houston Oilers in the playoffs. So close to the Superbowl that year. Too bad Derrick Thomas never got one.

yeah I remember none of that

if the Oilers had never moved to TN, I’d be a Ravens fan (I’m from Baltimore, born and raised). and DT; often overlooked, but what an ANIMAL. 20 sacks in a season? that’s absurd. also, I never knew he was dead until about a week ago. damn shame at such a young age.

definitely not the 100 which is obviously much more of an endurance race. you have to remember that CJ was beating dudes like Walter Dix in high school and college, world class speed right there.

Two most impressive Chiefs home stats to me that Titans have to overcome Sunday.

1. 199.4 rushing yards/game at Arrowhead.
2. 9.6 points/game allowed at Arrowhead(without the 2 nonsense TDs vs ARI/SF).

If you look at the games played at Arrowhead those stats aren't misleading at all.

It wasn’t one or two big games that inflated the stats. Those two are consistent across the board.

Haley makes a point of practicing at Arrowhead.

I’d like to see more road-game practices aimed at duplicating the road stadium conditions. I think it’s a big factor for the Chiefs.
