Consistency and The Kansas City Chiefs

If there were ever a word for the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs it would be consistency.  Every down we just don't know what is going to happen. We can guess on 3rd and 8 it will be a shotgun look with a draw up the middle to Charles. Then again it can be a fake draw with a deep pass to Dwayne Bowe.  After that it could be a big play or a total flop.  If that play doesn't work then we might go for it on 4th depending on what side of the field we are on.  We don't know if the team that destroyed the Seahawks are going to show up or the team that got humiliated by the Chargers (the second time around).

What makes a team good? Some might say the record is the only thing that really matters.  That might be true but will a good record hold up in the playoffs or Super Bowl? Ask the Patriots in 2007 or the Chargers every year recently.  Consistency is a big part of what makes a team good.  There are also other factors such as coaching, preparation, and determination.  The Chiefs are a very young team that are benefiting from a very talented coaching staff.  It also does help that we have a lot of high draftee's that are starting to mold.  We are learning how to win and become a consistently good team.  I love stats and I know that they don't tell the whole story.  I'm sure that most of you watched every game this year so having these stats next to each other can be interesting.

Wow, what is the first thing that you notice?  Honestly?  I look at our points scored.  We have scored 322 points and still have 2 more games left.  That is an average of 23 points a game.  So we are scoring points but how many came from big plays and defense?  Our offense is the biggest inconsistent part of the team.  Our net yards a game is pretty interesting.  What is crazy is that a lot of those are rushing yards. I just don't understand how you can put up over 500 yards then 2 weeks later put up 67 in which both were on the road. It goes to show you that one player can make a difference with maybe some determination.  We have lost the time of possession battle 6 times and won 3 of them.  We really haven't dominated the time of possession though.  Only once against the Seahawks which was just a total rape.  When looking at penalties it seems we are pretty inconsistent too although we aren't that bad at making mistakes.  Out of 14 games we have had 78 penalties for 648 yards.  That comes out to about 46.3 penalty yards per game. One thing that is not inconsistent is our turnovers.  We have only given up 10 on the year.  That is just amazing to me.  Never take a coaching staff and fundamentally sound football team for granted.

Earlier when I was talking about consistency nothing brings that out better than our red zone and third down efficiency.  If we are to become an elite team and serious playoff team we need to do better in these areas.  Do you want a better look?  Here goes...

We have been in the red zone 45 times this season so far.  We have scored 28 of those times.  That is a 62% red zone efficiency total.  That means we are leaving points of the board.  Some of that is our red zone offense is inept and we go for it on 4th without making it.  That leads into our third down efficiency which is beyond horrible.  If we brought that up I bet we would be an 12-2 team right now.  We have faced 3rd down 189 times this year while only converting 67 of those.  That is a 35% third down efficiency for the year.  What do you think when looking at that?  When converting third downs you keep the other offense off the field resulting in their defense wearing down.  That in turns gives your defense rest.  Third downs make and break a team.  We have gotten lucky to be a good fundamental team.  So if we can't make it on 3rd we have a coach that just loves to go for it on 4th.  What are the odds?  We have gone for it 21 times in 14 games.  We have converted 10 of those resulting in a 48% forth down efficiency.  That isn't bad but I'd say about 70% of those attempts keep at least 3 points off the board thus hurting our red zone efficiency.

Consistency is good for every team to master. We can't expect a young team to be elite especially with a new coaching staff.  We can't expect lucky breaks or big plays every game.  We can expect heart, soul, and great coaching every game.  We are looking at a new Chiefs era that will be good for years to come.  We will start to experience consistency at a high level.  When that happens we are looking at a new dynasty.
