The Evolution of Derrick Johnson

We all know him and like a lot of players it seems like we love to hate for being so inconsistent.  He seems to be really playing lights out this year for us though.  Will he play like this next year though?  If not I'm pretty sure he is used to Haley's doghouse.  When looking at DJ through the years I think he has been more effective in the middle in this 3-4.  It also is helping our line is starting to gel.  It always looks like DJ is around the ball and causing problems.  Yeah, sometimes he hits the wrong gap or has mental lapses but honestly, who doesn't?  These last few weeks I have read in places such as Pro-Football Focus that he should be considered for the Pro-Bowl this year.  What do you think?

I am a big stats guy like many of you know so let's breakdown Johnson's career.

Ok at first look it doesn't seem like DJ is inconsistent.  I'll ignore the this and last year for now.  It seems he is around a 95 tackle kind of guy (when playing outside linebacker).  His low tackle seasons he missed some games.  His passes defended and forced fumbles seemed to be on par.

Last year he was in the doghouse and most of us wanted him traded.  I wonder if you guys feel the same way now?  The games he did start it seemed like he was playing for a contract.  He was ranked 3rd last year in Interception Return Yards only behind Revis, Finnegan, and Woodson.  The amazing thing is that he only had 3 INT's last year and took 2 to the house.

This year we have 2 more games left and he already smashed his total tackle high, and passes defended.  He is down on interceptions but only because he can't catch (even with gloves).  He is still pretty good at forcing fumbles though.  He seems to be used more in coverage than blitzing the QB for sacks.  He was signed before the season so if he was only playing for a contract it seems like he is playing out of his mind now.

The future for DJ seems to be bright especially if he continues to play at such a high level.  This team is only getting better and he can be a leader by example for a young team.  Yes, he is 28 and possibly in his prime.  It only helps that RC knows what to do with him.

Some fun facts about DJ that you may not know.  He was awarded the Mack Lee Hill Award by the Chiefs for outstanding rookie play in 2005.  In 2006 Johnson's apartment was featured on MTV's Cribs.  His older brother Dwight played defensive tackle for the Eagles in 2000 and the Giantsin 2002.  He was born in Waco, Texas in 1982.
