A Review On the Raiders

This is what you guys can expect from the Raiders this weekend vs. the chiefs.

Star-divide

Look, I'm not going to tell you things you can find out by stats. This is more of what to expect type of article from a person who has watched and dissected every game.

Offense:

The Raiders are going to give McFadden the ball at least 25 times in this game assuming he gets through it injury free.

Oakland will try to spread Kansas City out. What I mean by that, is that you should expect a decent amount of 5 WR sets (McFadden included as a receiver).

Also, Oakland likes to run lots of one on one match-ups in the running game. You can expect many power tosses and reverses. Hue loves to keep the defense spread out.

With Oakland's speed, there's always a decent chance the Raiders will break a long one.

The Raiders absolutely love to give Marcel Reece the ball in passing situations. For those who don't know who Reece is, he's a converted receiver playing a hybrid fullback type of role.

I can almost guarantee you the 21 package will be the toughest for the Chiefs to defend. They will have to account for both running backs, and usually defenses focus in on McFadden. That's why Reece could break another one if the chiefs aren't disciplined.

Expect a lot of max protection. Expect to hear the name Khalif Barnes a lot. Barnes is the swing tackle that the Raiders like to use as an extra blocking tight end. In fact, he may actually be used as a tight end in a goal line situation.

Veldheer is playing really well at left tackle. Whether he's a match for Tamba Hali, we'll see. But, he's the league leader in false starts. Something that needs to be corrected.

If Zach Miller plays, he's a headache for opposing defenses. the Chiefs will no doubt try to take him away.

That's why the DHB match-up vs. Brandon Flowers is key.  Oakland usually will try to use the double move two or three times a game. It's certainly different from the chiefs style of passing.

Defense:

Oakland's scheme isn't that difficult to figure out. They play gap control type of scheme. One player makes a mistake, Charles or Jones will probably break one.

The Raiders play Seymour at the three technique, and Tommy Kelly at the 1 technique.

Tommy Kelly and Seymour can exploited for offsides penalties. Some guys just don't seem to learn. Kelly is perennially in the lead for offsides. Cassel should take advantage for some cheap yards.

In pass rushing situations, John Marshall loves to use various types of stunts. You'll see a lot of Kam Wimbey trying to beat Brian Waters inside.

When Wimbley rushes the passer, he's a one trick pony. He's a speed rusher.

McClain will be key in stopping the rush. He's very instinctive (something Kirk Morrison has no idea about) but he'll occasionally be walled off (e.g. Frank Gore run). He needs to be near perfect, or else it could be a long day.

Stanford Routt can be beat. On some plays he'll look as good as Asomugha, on others he'll get burned for 6. He needs to shut down Bowe, assuming Asomugha doesn't play.

Mike Mitchell needs to be accounted for. He plays sort of a hybrid type of linebacker in third down packages. Mitchell has definitely been the most improved player on the Raiders defense this season.

When the Raiders blitz, they usually bring the safeties.

Huff is not that good of a tackler. If he's the last line of the defense against the runner, it's a 50-50 shot Charles will get past him.

The Raiders will be in a single deep safety most of the game if Al has a say in this one.

Special teams:

Miller is a very clever punt returner. Not much speed, but certainly smart.

Ford is a threat returning the ball for a score. HE hasn't show much yet, but he still has that 4.2 Raiders speed.

I believe it's the left end zone, but that's the one that Janikowski always kicks a touchback from. Look for many touch backs

Coaching

Cable is normally very good when he challenges.

Depending on the situation Cable will go for it. He isn't as extreme as Haley.

The game management has not always been the best for the Raiders. For example, the last drive in the first half in the Arizona game. Oakland tossed it to McFadden with no timeouts at the 15 second mark (McFadden got in).

Anyway, it should be a good game. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Good break down.

It’s dosn’t seem to be biased either. And no digs. I’m almost disapointed.

Nice post josh

Good info. I’m curious, with your LT playing well, who is giving up all those sacks? I know it’s probably not Gallery…

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

Thanks...

Actually, the line has been a lot better recently.

The sacks in the 1st quarter of the season was mostly a product of Langston Walker and Mario Henderson (Occasionally, Carlisle). Veldheer has really come in and solidified that left tackle position from Henderson.

Good things

It’s amazing what a difference replacing one bad O-lineman with even a decent O-lineman will make.

Couple things here have me confused

“The Raiders absolutely love to give Marcel Reece the ball in passing situations.”
Up until last game he only had 8 catches for 40 yards in 7 games?

“Oakland will try to spread Kansas City out. What I mean by that, is that you should expect a decent amount of 5 WR sets (McFadden included as a receiver).”
Who are the other four WR? DHB, Nick Miller, Higgins and Ford(combined 27 receptions)?

A couple of matchups I like in our favor:

“That’s why the DHB match-up vs. Brandon Flowers is key”
“You’ll see a lot of Kam Wimbey trying to beat Brian Waters inside.”
“Veldheer is playing really well at left tackle. Whether he’s a match for Tamba Hali, we’ll see.”(Tamba actually lines up wherever he feels he has an advantage so that may change)
And Tony Moeaki against any of your LBs or Safeties(with the exception of maybe Huff).

Great post. Lots of info. Rec.

Form what I've gathered at S&B

The thinking there is that the last two games are what really represent the Raiders, not the first six.

The coaches have figured things out, the players have figured out the system, etc.

(BTW that’s to explain your confusion about Reece).

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

by MNchiefsfan on Nov 4, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Hmm that could explain it.

Could also explain why most of them think that they have a run defense now too after shutting down two of the worst running teams in the league. This poster seems to have more of a grip on reality.

Yeah, he's pretty fact-based

the response I’m generally getting over at S&B when I try to debate is that “stats don’t tell the whole story” and “our team is in decline and they are on the rise”.

While I somewhat agree with that first thought, the reality is that most of the time you can tell how good a team is by looking at their stats (even SD, if you really look, you can see all the problems with them on their ST stats).

When Oakland is in the 4 WR sets

they usually do put in all the guys you mentioned.

You will probably win the Flower-Heyward-Bey match-up.
We’ll see what happens between Seymour/Wimbley vs.Waters
The Raiders are going to focus in on Hali. Most of the time they’ll have McFadden or Bush chip him. Or, like I said, they’ll use max protection.
I think our safeties will be fine against Moeaki.

It isn’t just the last two games. The Raiders have won the last 3 out of 4.
This offense is potent. Gaining over 500 yards two weeks in a row isn’t too shabby against any NFL competition.

Will we score over 30 against the chiefs? No, probably not.

It’s not as if the defense has been bad either. In the last three games, the Raiders have allowed 17 points or less.

I think Oakland is certainly riding the momentum its gained the past couple of weeks.

Like I’ve said before, this should be a pretty close game historically and match-up wise. Good luck.

I see Seymour getting the better of Waters more often than Wimbley

More of a vet and has both speed/power/moves, whereas Wimbley (from what i hear) is more of a one-trick pony.

I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

In the past few years when your CBs (especially Asamougha) was getting a lot of praise

your safeties would get a lot of criticism. In fact I’ve heard commentators praise the strength of the Raiders D at DL, LB, and CB and then basically blamed the safeties for the poor outings by the defense. How are your safeties doing this year and if you think they are doing better, why the improvement?

Good question...

The answer is the safeties aren’t extraordinarily better this season. Pretty mediocre, if you ask me.

You could do worse. Like I said, Mitchell is the safety you gotta watch out for on third downs.

And Huff does have decent ball skills.

The biggest reason why the Raiders defense has been better the past 5 games is because of the defensive line play. That is the best unit, by far. Seymour has been playing at an All-Pro level this season.

very informative breakdown...surprisingly unbiased.

im hoping Milller plays, hes a load to defend. Aso probably wont play (doubtful)

I believe We (as in Oakland) will committ to the run defense and allow Cassel(l) to beat us through the air.

A 2td lead will just about close the coffin in this game for either team (maybe)

you guys rb’s are awesome no doubt! but dont sleep on Dmac, Reece, and Bush, oh and Cartright (lol)

I want to be the modern day version of Super Mario Brothers!!! Dont care for *shrooms*, but would love to *get large* and *spit fire*...unless im constantly told "thanks, but your girl is in another castle". That would rate a 8.9 on the ole *Suck-ometer*!!!

One thing that makes both of our teams' running game unique

Is that we both have backs that can break for a 50 yard TD at any moment. That kind of changes the rules about abandoning the run when you fall behind.

But yeah, 2 TD’s would be tough to come back from.

Josh, very excellent stuff and thank you annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd wreck'd

last word (Thurs) is that Asa is still out and Miller is still out … both questionable (Miller more so than Asa)

still, should be a very good, close, tough-fought game … Raiders have a VERY scary offense

It just got tougher for the Raiders to win...

We’ll be without our best defensive player and our second best offensive player.

Thanks for the Rec!

I agree with all of these assessments with the exception of one.

I hardly ever see any 5 wide sets out of this offense. I do agree the team does like to spread the D out out of the shotgun and run it which is usually successful but I hardly ever see 5 wide. Also I was one of the few that was shocked when Routt got a 1st and a 3rd rd tender this past off-season but he has been very solid. The CB who has regressed is Chris Johnson. Other than that this break down was spot on.

There were 2 or 3 five wideouts sets against the Seahawks.

And I think you’ll see some against the chiefs also. The Raiders will wanna make the Chiefs defense more simple. Tamba HAli would generally be the DE in the dime alignment.

the Raiders will be in a 5 WR set more b/c of Zach Miller’s absence.

And thanks for the comment.
