Ask BigBlueShoe How It Feels To Be An A$$hole

Chiefs fans, I've had a rough day. Hell, it's been a rough off-season in general, but today was especially bad. It's never fun to see all your teams starting safeties go down before you even get to Week Five, but that's what we've got in Indy.

Jamie Silva. Bob Sanders. Melvin Bullitt.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

All done for the season.

Yes, I know Bob is still on the active roster recovering from a torn biceps tendon and is not, technically, 'done' for 2010. Personally, I have no faith that the oft-injured safety will return to play this year.

Between Bob Sanders and Anthony Gonzalez always being hurt, the Colts offensive line woes, and Bill Polian not knowing when to keep that fat mouth of his shut, this season (so far) has been pretty crappy for us in Colts land. I don't expect sympathy from any of you, and I'm not asking for it. Just giving you an idea where my mind is right now.

Despite me feeling like someone has hollowed me out and used me as a condom, I'm more than willing to answer any questions you might have about the Colts as we gear up for their match-up against the Chiefs this Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Ask away. I'll do my best to answer.

Questions:

I don’t want enough Colts games like I used to but how are those safeties going down going to affect your run defense? I’m not sure if they are used in run support or not.

Bob Sanders is a run support safety

But he averages about 3 or 4 games a year before suffering some sort of injury. I feel bad for the guy because he is a great player, just never seems to stay healthy.

I want a championship team in KC.

I'm a MU fan..And so is the guy in my picture in yellow w/his arms raised high while surrounded by all blue.

Answer

Last season, the safeties weren’t need much in run support. Though, in normal Tampa-2, safeties are involved in stopping the run. Tackles Dan Muir and Mookie Johnson were very good stopping the run. Now, Fili Moala is starting over Mookie, and many of us still do not understand why. Moala is not better at stopping the run.

With that being said he often gets made fun of by his own members for not spelling words right, questioning Colts front office, coaches and calling out players not deserving to play or start via Bob Sanders, Anthony Gonzales. Its safe to say, but if he was just an everyday blogger voicing the same opinions, he would be banned as I was from there. Thats the irony.

They have the same bloggers, shit never changes nor do they every add any new members. Its the same cirlce jerk over and over again. The dominant gene

allows the bearer to go 14-0 and then sit out the last two regular season games and let Curtis Painter take the loss. The recessive gene allows you to miraculously make the super bowl in spite of being one of the worst QBs in the league that year only to beat the team that otherwise would’ve challenged the ’72 Fins prefection.

Sheer brilliance by Mercury Morris. Too bad the poor schmo won’t get a chance to pop any champagne this year.

During preseason schedule analysis....

I think most Chiefs’ fans would have penciled in a loss for week 5 just as I think most Colts’ fans would have picked Indy to win. Now that the game is just a few days away, I think most KC fans believe the Chiefs have a legitimate shot at stealing one away from Peyton. How is it over in Colts’ land? Do you get a sense that some of the confidence is shaken?

by whoadog on Oct 5, 2010 4:17 PM CDT reply actions

For me

confidence is definitely shaken, and not just because of the losses suffered this weekend. I have only seen the team really have a great game against the Giants, and a good game against the Broncos. And even though the Colts really ignore preseason, I was much more nervous after the 3rd game, which is supposed to be more of a “dress rehearsal” – the Colts were (pardon the French) fuck-stomped by the Packers.

I have a question more related to the franchise in general

We over here have been dealing with one losing season after another and now things are on the upswing, maybe not playoff bound this year but who knows at this point it’s a long season, and every personnel moves is an upgrade. What is it like knowing that you have been a perennial powerhouse for god knows how long and management just can’t seem to get those last few pieces together to make you a multiple superbowl winner. To me it seems to be coaching.

definitely frustrating

my husband is Pats fan and he told me tonight that he was still devastated by the 2007 SB loss…. I was thinking to myself, “but your team has already tasted victory THREE TIMES!” From my perspective, to see a team with (IMO and the perspective of MVP voters for 4 years) the best QB in the game… in a game that has so drastically been altered to be QB-driven… waste his talent year after year… UGH!

btw, I don’t blame or villify Polian, nor am I a Polian apologist… I’m really not educated enough about football to know when his decisions are wrong, but judging from the results, there’s always something missing

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Oct 5, 2010 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

How's that Donald Brown working out for ya?

I think Polian has plenty of culpability. I don’t particularly care for the coaches that Indy has had (other than Manning himself), I think they haven’t really hit any homeruns on a draft pick since Manning. The Colts are Peyton Manning and 21 guys off the street and they can go 12-4 year after year being just that.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." -Gandhi.

by Sudden on Oct 7, 2010 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Donald Brown's two biggest problems

are his injury history and the Colts O-Line. The culpability, if anywhere, resides in Polian not seeming to want to spend his first or second round draft picks on the guys in the trenches.

I disagree that the Colts are PM + 21 guys, especially when you have Freeney and Mathis on the other side of the ball. I will agree, however, that Manning makes a lot of guys look very good.

Freeney and Mathis?

If you have a television try watching some football on Sundays. You will clearly see that without Peyton Manning your team sucks. You could have 2 Freeneys and 2 Mathis dudes and a healthy Bob Sanders and you would be 4-12.

The injury history of your offensive line? Thats your Gm’s fault. He’s had plenty of chances to get that straighten around. You now have to live with it because the line you had last year in the SuperBowl sucked remember. Thats why he changed it.

And basically Manning is playing with guys off the street considering how many walk ons and late rounders are on this team. So the guy above you is right. You need to quit justifying your teams mistakes and hold your coaching staff and your GM accountable. You clearly just make excuses for them and it makes you look nieve.

The scariest guy in the league is Manning late in games. You have to pressure him, he’ll pick apart any defense without pressure

by RamX21 on Oct 5, 2010 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

One thing I'd like to see next week is a "fake blitz" look on defense

Where Manning does his series of fake hikes to make the defense reveal its scheme, but the defense is prepared ahead of time and pretends to bite (like having the strong side CB “bite” on the hike, but then sending the weak side CB on the blitz) and attacks somewhere else instead. With two weeks of preparation time, it’s conceivable that this team could have learned how to pull this off perfectly.

Has this ever been tried on Manning before? And if so, how successful was it?

I don't know if that specifically has been tried

but I’ll bet Crennel has replayed the SB many times and noticed that Williams changed up the defense at least once, and some claim 3 different times (once per quarter) just so Peyton couldn’t lock into it the way he did against the Ravens and Jets

Are there tickets available outside of the stadium for reasonable prices or are they pretty tough to come by? In KC, we have been able to buy tix outside for about half price at the very beggining of the game. (I know, I sell some most games) I am coming this weekend and all of the tickets I have seen appear to be fairly expensive. I don’t care where the seats are.

Questions from ChiefsatWar:

1) How many times will the Kansas City Chiefs sack your sacred Manning?

2) How many turnovers does Indianapolis surrender per game thus far in the 2010 campaign?

3) Did you know Succop can kick a 65-yard field goal? Does that scare the shit outta you?

4) Did you know that turning your horse shoe over will cause all your luck to fall out? Did you flip your horse shoe over last weekend?

5) Why all the injuries?

6) Has Payton Manning ever been knocked out of a game?

7) Does any quarterback in the league (besides Jay Cutler or Tom Brady) complain to the ref more than Payton Manning?

8) Who on your team wants a good nut grab? Be careful that Shaun Smith doesn’t tear Peyton’s nut sac clear off!!! Just a warning!

Anyway, I am throwing this crazy questions around just for the heck of it so don’t get your panties in a bunch! It should be a good game regardless of the outcome, but your guys will probably get your hearts broken again…I’m just sayin!!!

by ChiefsatWar on Oct 6, 2010 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

Manning doesn't have to worry about Shaun Smith

My attempt to answer

1) Once – a gimme sack where Peyton goes down before he is hit

2) One per game. Four all season – one interception and three fumbles

3) A little bit. Especially if the game is tied or the Colts are up by less than three with 36 seconds left and timeouts.

4) I have heard that. We flipped it back over yesterday. No one noticed until you pointed it out. Thank you.

5) We’re testing our “next man up” phlosophy and we’re testing it as hard as we can.

6) Nope. The Miami Dolphins broke his jaw once and I believe he missed one play. I think I speak for all Colts fans when I say we have yet to see anything that leads us to believe Curtis Painter can’t lead us to the promised land. (Oh God, please don’t let Curtis Painter into this game.)

7) Well, Tom Brady is obviously number one here. I don’t remember seeing Jay Cutler complain at all in the second half of the Giants game. If the refs did their jobs better, Peyton wouldn’t have to point out their inadequacies.

8) I can’t think of any player I would want that to happen to. It might be fun to see Smith grab Coach Caldwell’s junk just to see if there might be a change in facial expression.

I enjoyed your questions. If my panties are in a bunch, it’s because I bunched them up mostly for comfort (mostly). The Chiefs have played well all year and I look forward to a good match up this week. I see the Colts winning by 10. Luckily, the game is in Indy. I would not like to play this one in KC. Good luck starting in week 6.

Peyton's special helmut

Knowing the size of his head where do the colts go to get a helmut big enough to fit him.

Somebody told me Baltimore and that they left in the middle of the night and it was classified as a wide load. Is that true? the middle of the night?

Well there making fun of a guy.

There on Joel and Chris’s site. I just thought it would be appropriate not to make fun of a guy that is trying to be nice and giving us answers about his team. I think its rude. We should have class and not kick someone while there down. If you want to make a comment about him send it to the people in charge. I’m just tired of seeing it in so many threads. I come here for chiefs news and reactions. If I wanted drama I would watch a reality TV show.

Agreed for the most part, and thanks for looking out

However….in this particular case I think BigBlueShoe has been making fun of himself a little bit lately:
As some noted in the comments (thank you!), the Colts dropped linebacker Tyjuan Hagler to make room for Baby J. Indy Star writer Phil Wilson doesn’t understand why Hagler was cut. Cue me posting a Tweet reading, Wilson thinks Bill Polian is dumb.
Agreed with what you’re saying on a larger scale, though, and appreciate you saying something about it, PSU.

Here goes my questions

1. I watched last year in disbelief as the perfect season went down the drain because the coach rested the starters. I felt like the new coach just hopped on a bus that was already headed to it’s destination regardless of who was driving. To me I felt like that killed the momentum and it made me think that although he claims to be the coach… peyton is teh real coach of the colts. Do you think the new coach is part of the slow start you are having this season?

2. Prior to the miracle by the jags the colts fans were running wild around the blogs talking all kinds of sh*$&@#% . Having been fans of such a historically successful team does this season humble a few of the otherwise arrogant fans? Chiefs fans have had years of practice playing the humble part.

3. If the Chiefs come to town and pull off the victory do you think the fans will start calling for heads to roll similar to the way the 49ers reacted to losing a game to the chiefs?

agreed with #1.....

people just simply dont understand or underestimate the power of the minds!! called will power or passion or whatever you call it. Stopping the great mojo of winning is bad karma. Some Colts fans think we should drop it…. but the point is you don’t win unless you want to and are designed to….. regardless….

Unlike in those seasons with early losses, resting starters makes sense. When the perfect season is on the line, you go for it… regardless….. I know Colts’ players are not happy about it and honestly psychologically there is an effect …

My problem is that the coaching staff or front office did not do enough to motivate the players “IF” the players are not motivated or are playing crappy…. it seems now we only won when the D players “want” to win…. not because the coaches or the front office want them to… Polian says we have great players but they are not playing well.. DUH!!! pull them back during the most glorious moments in their lives…. stupid dumbass polian/ probably will be attacked by some fellow Colts fans here. I am just hoping somehow the locker-room gets enough motivation back together. Miracles are formed when minds get together…………

thanks for the answer

I must admit that even i was a bit disappointed by the lack of wanting to chase history. I would also agree with the point you made about the psychological effect. people might now think that they don’t have a chance to make history that way because even when they get there the coach will undermine their efforts.

I can sort of see the logic behind pulling the starters even tho I don’t agree with it. However if something would have happened to important players in the last 2 games then everyone jumps on the other side of the argument.

I am looking forward to this game sunday

You guys have maybe 3 or 4 good players or whatever "average" is for any sucky team

Here is for those Colts fans who like to attack people for making quick judgements….

Manning is the only guy on your entire team that makes it work. Other then that your 4-12 every year. Please don’t give me an excuse on why you think you could win without him or even say you have the talent on that team to make a playoff birth. From top to bottom, the front office would be cleaned out along with the coaching staff. Manning saves jobs and makes contracts for other people, he’s good for the economy in Indianapolis.

by jay16 on Oct 9, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand the decision regarding resting the starters. If Manning, Freeney, Wayne, Clark, Brackett or Saturday had been injured in the game, it would/could have crushed any hopes of going to the Super Bowl. I do, however, disagree with how it was done. Pulling the starters in the second half without any prior indication of the game plan is unfair to the starters, the fans and to Curtis Painter (the receiver of the fans’ displeasure). Why not make it public knowledge before the game? You’re not giving the Jets any kind of competitive advantage. That’s what pained me, but what is done is done. If the Colts win the Super Bowl, Polian and Caldwell would have been geniuses. Obviously that didn’t happen.

As for the 2nd and 3rd questions…

2) I can’t speak for all Colts fans in real life or the blogosphere, but I like to think I am respectful of all opponents and teams in the NFL. Maybe it’s because I remember the Colts pre-Manning and Dungy. I have been humbled by the team’s performance plenty. I don’t take anyone for granted and am very grateful for the success the Colts have had recently even if it has “only” translated into one Super Bowl victory. I think every fan base has its share of d-bags. I can only hope we aren’t as bad as most.

3) If the Chiefs win, I would like to think the nature of the victory would dictate how Colts fans react. That said, most people feel the Chiefs win this game by running over, through and around the Colts defense. If that happens, the Colts either didn’t gameplan correctly or failed to make adjustments. If Cassel makes plays, it’s because the secodary is weak and/or depleted. Bottom line is if the Colts lose and Manning plays like he has up until this game, Colts fans will perceive a loss as a management/coaching issue.

This is a game for Kansas City to see how they stack up against a team that is at the top year after year. For Indy, it’s a must win game at home to get back on track. I’m nervous (but anyone that knows me will tell you I can find a reason to fret about every game). I think we’re looking at a tight game that comes down to the last posession. I hope I’m wrong and the Colts win in a blow out, but I don’t see that happening. As I said in my other comment, I wish the Chiefs nothing but good luck starting next Sunday.

You’re respectful and your opinions are well thought out and presented. (At least that I’ve seen in this thread!)

Thanks for representing the Colts fan base in a class way.

That said, I do hope we steamroll your Colts in their own back yard tomorrow. Here’s to an exciting game either way.

Agree with the decision to sit starters.

The fact that Indy advanced to the SB says they got it right. And I think New Orleans took advantage of weaknesses that revealed themselves before the starter sit-down. Kind of similar to that New England run, when they kept winning despite being beaten in the trenches. Of 3 teams who advanced to the SB recently with mediocre line play, only the Steelers won it, and they were pretty mediocre the next year. Kind of like Indy looks right now.

But as an avid KC watcher, I know it takes O-Line time to gel and you don’t necessarily have to make a big splash to quietly build a solid UNIT. I think Indy’s O-Line is struggling, but there’s always a chance they’ll turn it around. Polian, for all the bashing we’re seeing, recently, has done a very good job for a very long time.
