SB Nation Kansas City Editor's Pick
Just how easy has the Chiefs "easy" schedule been?
You've heard it over and over again.
"The Chiefs are only undefeated because of an easy schedule."
Our wins against the Chargers, Browns, and 49ers have not given us a whole lot of credibility around the league. While that's been fun in the sense that we get to play the "nobody respects us" card (and seriously, what fan doesn't love to pull that one out?), it's been a slight irritation. The proverbial fly in the "we're the last undefeated team of 2010!" ointment.
So is it true? Have our opponents been that bad? Are we merely the result of facing some terrible teams? Would most of the teams in the league be undefeated if they'd had our schedule? Short answer; I don't know.
But we're not here for short answers, we're here for long ones. So let's take a deeper look...
The combined record of San Diego, Cleveland, and San Francisco (when taking our games out of the loop) is currently at an unimpressive 3-6. That .333 winning percentage is not going to strike fear in the hearts of many around the league. Of course, if you take a look at a few other teams' opponents records...
Saints- .273 (3-8)
Packers- .417 (5-7)
Texans- .454 (5-6)
These are three teams that are currently considered among the "class" of the NFL. Yet each has a loss, and none have played a particularly tough schedule (especially the Saints). Yet no one is calling them out for having it "easy". Hmmm... could that have anything to do with the fact that these three teams were SUPPOSED to be good, so analysts will point to them and say, "well of COURSE, they're good. I called it, didn't I?"
Whereas with our team, they have to find the reason we're winning. Because Lord knows it couldn't be that they were just wrong, right? So they talk about our schedule.
Now, onto our easy schedule. Let's look at these cakewalk teams we've faced...
San Diego- This is still considered our most "legit" win from what I've read. They're the best team we've played, have the best record (which at 2-2 is not saying much), and seem to have a lot of talent.
We beat them in a rainstorm, held when we had to, and made some big plays. We've gotten some attention for this win, and most people recognize SD as a decent team so I won't focus on this game.
Cleveland- This game is one that I find interesting. It's one of the games our many naysayers point to and say, "Look, they BARELY beat the pathetic Browns! How good can they be?"
The problem with this argument is that it does what most early-season arguments do... base ideas off of recent years, not this year. Cleveland is no easy team to beat this year.
"But they're 1-3 MN! You're crazy!"
Look at their losses. A 2-1 Bucs team, a 3-0 Chiefs team, and a 3-1 Ravens team. The teams that beat them have a combined 8-2 record. And guess what? They were in every one of those games right down to the wire, including against everyone's latest favorite Super Bowl favorite, the Ravens. Also, they just beat a pretty good Cincinnati team.
This isn't last year, and the Browns aren't an easy out anymore. They've had a ridiculously tough schedule so far and have lost some tough, close games.
San Francisco- This is another game that everyone shrugs and says, "Yeah, you stomped SF. Big deal, they're 0-4".
This is another time where record becomes deceiving. SF has indeed lost all four of their games, getting blown out in two of them. Let's ignore our blowout and look at the SEA game.
SF gave up under 250 total yards of offense. How did they get smashed so badly? A pick 6, a 2nd pick that gave SEA the ball at SF's 13-yard-line, and a God-awful punt that gave SEA the ball at SF's 45 accounted for 3 of SEA's TD's.
If you're SF, that's how you give up 31 points despite holding the other team to under 250 yards. They were really let down by their offense.
You want a more accurate gauge of how good SF's defense is? Look no further than their games against ATL and NO, who are both considered contenders. They held the Saints offense to under 300 total yards. They held the Falcon's vaunted rushing attack to 98 yards and 3.4 YPC!
San Francisco is another team that has had a difficult time of it, losing to teams with a combined 11-4 record. And also, like Cleveland, they've hung right in there with teams that are considered contenders (losing by a combined 5 points to NO and ATL). Their defense has been outstanding, particularly their rushing defense (they'd be giving up 75 YPG rushing if it weren't for us).
So there you have some facts about our "softer" opponents. Are CLE and SF that bad? In my opinion, no. They've played incredibly difficult schedules, and have managed to play tough against some very good teams. Think of it this way; the teams that SF and CLE have lost to are a combined 19-6 (.760 winning percentage). Ouch.
So why all the talk about our schedule? Well, like I said, no one predicted this for us, so they've gotta figure out a way that makes them still right. So they point to our schedule and call it soft. It's a conspiracy! Down with the media!
OK, that's getting a little carried away, but remember those facts about SF and CLE around the next time someone tells you that the Chiefs have had an easy road to being, ahem, the only undefeated team in pro football.

son, aren't you supposed to be studying or something?
no wonder your wife says you don't pay attention to her, always posting, commenting ...
seriously, my thinking is the SF game was our most legit win … not wanting to discount the Cleveland game, we didn’t look particulary overpowering in that game … Opening Night on MNF in Hurricane Arrowhead did (and will continue to) raise questions about this team, and not all of those questions can be answered in two games
the NEXT two games, though, should answer an awful lot of questions we or anyone has … I’ll agree with craig (above) … our overall schedule looks pretty easy
still, nice post, good logical arguments and well done … now get back to your studying!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
agree however,
First arent we do for an easy schedule? It seems like the last two years of Herm, we had some of the toughest schedules of the League.
Second, will it go down in the history books with an asterisk about how easy a teams schedule was depending on how they finish?

yah, we were due
last year was an aberration … facing the toughest division (NYG, Phil, etc) when they were all “up” while we’re in “scrap it and evaluate before we even rebuild” mode
one thing I’d like to see, though, is wait time on our assessment of the teams we play and the teams THEY play … it’s still early in the season to be saying the Bucs are good, or the Browns or Bengals … or bad for that matter … any given Sunday and all that, let’s see how things shake out in the long run and THEN take a look back … the SF or Cleveland games MIGHT look like very cheap wins in the rearview mirror of an entire season
let’s get someplace before we look back to see where we’ve been, because really, when you stop and think about it (as Haley might say) “we haven’t done anything yet”

By the time it's all said and done....
We’ll be off the the p-word and no one will really care anymore. The talk about how easy our schedule is (or isn’t) ends after this Sunday, when the Chiefs go into Lucas Oil Dome and smack the Colts around. Even IF we can look back and say “SF was a weak team this year”, you can’t discount the fact that the Chiefs absolutely DOMINATED them in ALL phases. That’s what good teams do to bad teams. Dominate them in every aspect.

Absolutely
And we dominated them like the Saints and the Falcons did not.

The SF game was the most telling of what the Chiefs are IMO.
Like you pointed out in the post, SF has a pretty damn good defense, regardless of the SEA final score. What the Chiefs did to the Niners should have IND’s DC suffering from sleepless nights right now.

Chiefs need to show people
they are capable of a dominating performance more than once. If we squeak by Indy we won’t change many minds about the Chiefs, just the Colts. We need to go out there and kick them in the teeth for a win to be respected.

The Colts are going to be left asking themselves “What the fuck just happened?”

I disagree
I don’t think beating the Colts will get us the respect of the league. They are 2-2 and already the league is questioning if their the same team or are they on a decline, if we win they will be said to be the latter. The Texans game IMO is what gets us respect if we win, because they have a good defense and a balanced offense.
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
Agreed.
If you think about it, the Colts will be 2-3 if we beat them, and the story will become all about the Colts losing a step and not the Chiefs being on the rise.
Which is frustrating, because at some point don’t the teams that are losing have to become bad or middle-of-the-pack teams and the teams that are winning become good teams?

Nah,
if we barely win, then the story is the “struggling Colts” for a lot of people. I mean they would then be 2-3. Just another losing team we beat.

Yes,
because like I said before, I think that the Niners game was the first glimpse of our real offense. For two weeks we saw very few screen plays, very few formations that had Charles/Jones/McCluster, very little wildcat, and very little Charles moving into the slot. Then in week 3 we saw all of those things used regularly.

And like I said, good teams dominate bad teams, in ALL phases.
The Chiefs did just that to the Niners. It was such an impressive showing that you can’t even compare any other game so far this year to it. The Packers vs Bills game was the next closest, but the Pack couldn’t run the ball on them.
The Chiefs have given the most complete total team showing so far: Complete domination of a lesser team. 200 yards running, 200 yards passing, holding the Niners to 250 total yards and 4/17 third down conversions. It was complete and total dominance in all phases. There hasn’t been another team that has shown that so far.

Wow. Nice way of putting it
It really was domination. Something that has been rare this year in the NFL.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Out of 62 games only 6 have been true dominance.
Falcons over Cardinals 41-7
Chiefs over Niners 31-10
Steelers over Bucs 38-13
Jets over Bills 38-14
Chargers over Cardinals 41-10
Patriots over Dolphins 41-14
That just made me say WOW.
Hmmm... notice that the Falcons, Steelers, Jets, Chargers, and Patriots are all considered serious contenders?
The Chiefs are overlooked, plain and simple. People just can’t grasp that we might be good.
And what KILLS me about it… is everyone acts like “Chiefs” is synonymous with losing and failure. Like we’re the Browns or the Lions. I mean, we just got off 3 losing seasons, but we were a playoff team the year before that and 10-6 the year before that. I just don’t get it!

Oh, and thanks :)

It's going to be a shootout with the Colts.
Colquitt should have a pretty boring day. What we need from the defense is 2 or 3 stops. This won’t be like what we saw against CLE or SF, because it’s the freaking Colts. If we get 2 or 3 stops on them, and we DON’T leave points on the field (which we shouldn’t looking at IND’s defense), then we’ll walk out of there with a win by 10-14 points.

I'd like to see us get more than that number of stops
But I’m greedy. I also consider it a decent defensive performance if we hold them to a FG on a given drive.
They will be tough to stop, no doubt about it.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I'm thinking when you consider that we're going to attempt long, clock eating drives,
That Indy will hopefully only get 6 possessions this game. Force them to punt 2 of those times, hold them to a FG once and I’m thinking 24 points is about what we need to hold them to defensively.

I'm convinced that will be the Chiefs game plan
No “shootout” on Sunday. Indy will be shooting cuz that’s all they can do against any decent D. But against a “good” D like Crennel’s, I don’t think they will be able to throw as well against the Chiefs as they have been.
[The Kansas City Chiefs] are now a team that knows how to win. The power that was unleashed in that last stand (Chargers wk 1) is a rare thing. Teams spend tons of money in search of it, but it can only be found in the collective conciousness created by team builders.

I sure hope it's not a shootout.
We will lose a shoot out. Cassel will throw picks to Indy’s secondary and Peyton will cut our throats. Even if we protected the ball, we could not keep up. No way.
If this coaching staff tries to air it out and keep up with the Colts’ offense instead of feeding it to Jones and Charles the whole game, they should be fired.

Pretty much exactly
And a win over IND will still have the majority refusing to acknowledge we’re even kind of good.
But a loss will prove beyond any shadow of a doubt we are absolutely terribad.
TO BE CLEAR: I don’t care if anyone wants to admit we’re pretty good. I simply find it amusing and annoying that a win will hardly be noted, but a loss will result in 10,000 of the same “yeah we thought so” articles ad nauseum.

You want a more accurate gauge of how good SF’s defense is? Look no further than their games against ATL and NO, who are both considered contenders. They held the Saints offense to under 300 total yards. They held the Falcon’s vaunted rushing attack to 98 yards and 3.4 YPC!
In my opinion this is the salient point – we put up more than twice the rushing yards and a significantly better YPC average against the 49ers

Excellent perspective. Rec'd
There is no such thing as an easy schedule in the NFL. I cringe every time I hear it. All 32 teams are affected each & every year. Whether it be from player acquisitions, trades, draft picks, free agency, coaches, injuries, disputes, holdouts the list goes on & on. Clearly from one year to the next teams are judged by the prior season or record. The Chiefs have been judged by their last 3 seasons over & over again. It makes me ill to keep hearing it. Thankfully we are winning now and our past 3 season record is fading off into the sunset.
We have beaten 3 tough teams… Period.

Win or lose, the Chiefs scare the bejesus of all opponents in 2010
I agree
The NFL changes so much year in and year out. Simmons talks about that, saying that there’s always a few very good teams that crap out, a few average that go one way or the other, and a few bad teams that become good, and a few more that become average…
You get the idea. Lots of change!

I don’t comment on this site for the people that are against me and think that I can’t do it. I comment for the people that have always believed in me. I comment for my family, for my wife, for my mother so it really comes down to that.
Wow
I thought it was saying that people who say our schedule is incredibly weak haven’t done their due diligence and are just talking out of their rears.
But I could be wrong.
Of course, you clearly have a lot better things to talk about right now… like bashing other peoples’ posts…

I agree, I do think we have an easy schedule overall, but the first five games to me is the hardest part. I thought we had a chance to win the first three, but also thought we could easily lose all three as well. The fact that we came out 3-0 just makes me wonder what we can do once we get past the Indy and Hou games.

Nicely Said
MNchiefsfan—you wrote what I was eluding to in my post but you were much more eloquent. I agree that Cleveland is underrated. Another point is, teams that were supposed to dominate others this year are losing. Not many teams are truly great this season. New Orleans hasn’t looked good. The Vikes look lost. The Cowboys haven’t impressed anyone yet. So can anyone honestly say whether they have an easy or hard schedule? While I can’t say ours looks hard at this point, I also can’t say I know for sure what games will be easy. Denver is up and down. Tenn looked so so last week, and Indy looks beatable. All I know is KC is undefeated and playing solid football. Our coaching staff is possibly the best in the NFL. So I’m excited for our chances. I think our team can play with anyone. That being said….GO CHIEFS!
Up until the New England obliteration of Miami..
We held 1st place in Football Outsiders’ DVOA stat, which basically measures a team’s level of play vs their opponents, vs all teams that have played those same opponents.
Basically, as it stands, we’ve played our 2010 opponents 33.6% better than any other team that has faced those same opponents, good enough for the 2nd highest DVOA % in the league.

Nice find
As for surprise teams, it’s worth nothing that both Kansas City and Houston have played roughly average schedules so far. Based on current DVOA, however, Houston has the hardest remaining schedule in the league, while the Chiefs have the second-easiest.

Nice post MN, as usual.
How are things on the shores of lake Milacs? Gotta few relations up in that neck of the woods ya know. No matter how you slice it this year, the Chiefs are a better team. Whether you believe that they are better because they have been together longer, or have better coaching or the rookies have provided the impetus (or all of the above) it doesn’t matter. No one would have predicted this 3-0 start, just as no one (except a Chiefs homer like me) is currently predictin a win vs. the Colts. Not even the odds makers. This is, by the way, inspite of the fact that the Colts D is currently descimated with injury (29th against the run, 17th against the pass, 25th overall in yds allowed), their running game is sub standard and Peyton has a broken eyelash. All of which will be even sweeter to recall when the Chiefs have the upper hand on Sunday.
If you need a rec-omendation for Law School, I will write you one. I can attest to your writing sklls, although I hope that your entrance exam does not include anything about being able to discern the citizenship of Lebanese females.
I would expect the same defense to take the field on Sunday that we have been seeing all season. The offense is where you will see some difference. Charlie may just dial up a career day for one of our Wideouts. My money is on Chambers and maybe even T Jones. One of them will throw a TD pass. Can’t wait.

Wow. Compliments from the Master (bows)
Your posts CONSTANTLY put mine to shame, Aiken. But thanks all the same :)
I agree with you. We’re better than we thought we would be. It’s tough to digest, so I know many of us (including me) are waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it may. After all, there’s nowhere to go but down from undefeated. But our utter dismantling of SF convinced me that we are indeed a much better team.
I’d take you up on that letter of rec, but I got all my apps in yesterday (good Lord that was horrible. Took literally all day).
Peyton broke an eyelash? OK, now I KNOW we’re going to win!

Good post MN. Here's my take on the Indy game:
They won’t score 40 points on the Chiefs. No. With Indy having no running game to speak of, the Chiefs will pin their ears back and attack Manning just like the other teams that have beaten Indy this year. I also see the Chiefs getting at least 1 INT as a result from the pressure.
That being said, I’m sure many Chiefs fans are concerned with the question: “Can Manning beat up the Chiefs secondary?” I doubt it. The Chiefs’ secondary has really improved over the first 3 games…and you can bet that Berry won’t get surprised by play action. There won’t be a run threat from Indy of any kind. So that won’t play into the equation.
On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs will continue to dominate on the ground. I look for at least 250 yds between JC and Jones this week, which will open up the play action passing game again. Indy is terrible against the run. The 49ers were good against the run until they faced the Chiefs. I would not be surprised to see 300 yds on the turf by the Chiefs duo. The only thing that might bring that down toward 200 would be the speed and flow of that Indy D from sideline to sideline. They tackle much better than the 49ers in the open field from what I’ve seen.
Special teams will do well again in spite of the Colt’s quality there. Indy may get a couple big stops or something, but they won’t be able to keep Arenas and DMC from burning it up in the return game eventually. Field position will be excellent most of the time as a result. The Chiefs cover as well as anyone in KO and Punt situations.
Succop will show up as always too. I just hope the game doesn’t come down to a 59 yarder for Succop. While I know he can make it, I don’t expect or want it to come down to that.
[The Kansas City Chiefs] are now a team that knows how to win. The power that was unleashed in that last stand (Chargers wk 1) is a rare thing. Teams spend tons of money in search of it, but it can only be found in the collective conciousness created by team builders.

I hope you're right
Tamba could have himself a good day if we get ANY push up the middle.
Manning gets rid of the ball quickly, so he’s not sacked all that often.
However… this year is shaping up perhaps a little differently. Through 3 games he’s already gone down 4 times.
Compare that to last year when he only went down 10 total times… their O-line is really struggling, and how long can he compensate for it?

Nice post! And although i do agree with most..
to compare what one offense or defense did to another team and not to us, is hard to look into. Like somebody had mentioned in another post, these games are about matchups and every team matches up different to each other…So the best team in football just might have trouble 9 out of 10 times against the worst team in football because of matchup problems. But having said that, I think everyone of the teams we have played so far has potential to rattle off a streak of wins at any given time despite their record.. Good read.. I enjoyed it
Thanks, and for the most part I agree with you
Football is a game of matchups, so comparative performances are tough to use.
However, the whole “matchup” issue is one reason I’m so encouraged by the SF. On paper, they should have given us a ton more problems than the Colts on D. They run a 3-4 with big bodies (which doesn’t suit our smaller, athletic line), they have a stud MLB, and they are excellent at stopping the run.
As opposed to the Colts, who run with a smaller, lighter 4-3 line, with no Willis, that is considered a team that is poor at stopping the run.
I like the way we match up against IND a lot better. There’s just that pesky Manning guy…
