Kansas City Chiefs Reportedly Waive Atiyyah Ellison

The Kansas City Chiefs last week signed DL Atiyyah Ellison when the trade of DE Alex Magee created an open roster spot. His stay didn't last long. Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports that Ellison has been waived after the Chiefs "decided they didn't need him."

The timing of it all is pretty interesting.

Star-divide

Ellison previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars so when he was signed the week of the Chiefs and Jaguars game I figured it was a situation where the Chiefs would get as much information out of him as possible. Todd Haley later said that Ellison's signing was not a "get something on Jacksonville" situation. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.

So the Chiefs now have an open roster spot.

Tuesday is usually the day teams bring in free agents to work out. Remember, there's a report that four of the players the Chiefs have worked out recently are three former New England Patriots --- WR Kelley Washington, WR Sam Aiken and LB Pierre Woods -- as well as former Cleveland Browns S Gerald Alexander.

Caplan also reports the previously reported news that WR Jeremy Horne was added to the practice squad.

The Chiefs will confirm the news via a press release (probably today) assuming the report is accurate.

Either he was terrible or he was an "info" signing.

Who was cut from Buffalo this year? Maybe that will be the next signing.

Best special teams guy makes it.

We’ve had a real drop off since the begining of the season on ST.

Maybe they are getting ready to sign another free agent DT

Howard Green was just waived by Jets. Though he seems to have fair bit of 3-4 experience but I don’t know much more about his play other than the fact that he is a veteran DT.

I didn't notice...

But according to Josh Looney, he had about 20 snaps vs. 30 for Smith. I believe he was part of that goal line stand at the end of the first half. I don’t think he had any stats, but I heard his name called (in a positive fashion) during the broadcast on at least one play.

Gotta be Gales!!!

Please please bring up Dion Gales!

He deserves a decent shot. He is wasting away on the practice squad. I am ready to see him go to work!!

"Nobody scares us," Dion Gales said. "Where I’m from, it ain’t how big or small a man is, it’s the size of the fight in them.

"I’ll be doggone if I let another man beat me, that’s just my attitude. I’m not scared of another man."

by Matt_Grbac on Oct 27, 2010 11:05 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Who would you have him take snaps from?

Chiefs are two deep at every position on the DL already.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 11:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Well

Dion can go at NT or DE. So he provides depth across the board. I mean we could never have enough DLine depth. They could rotate more often.

Dion provides a nice pass rush and he is capable of eating double teams. Many possibilities for him.

Would still have to sit one of the regular DL.

If you just added Gales, they would have to sit someone else who contributes on special teams. Can’t replace a faster LB, WR, or DB with a slow D-lineman.

Keeping perspective...improvement is 6 wins, but I think 8 is attainable.

by BinSC on Oct 27, 2010 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I just can't see going with 5 DL.

6 is plenty enough for rotation. I disagree that you can never have enough depth – not with a 45 man roster.

I’m sure he’ll get his shot, but probably not this season, barring injury.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I just can’t see going with 5 7 DL.

Actually, I need caffeinated Kool-Aid, though Haley’s daily endorsement drinking of Diet Coke has me kind of leaning in that direction too (though I’m currently a Pepsi guy).

Mark Simoneau

That’s who the Chiefs have added…Makes me wonder about Vrabel’s availability….

by Bsketbal52 on Oct 27, 2010 11:24 AM CDT reply actions

I wish him the best...

But am also anxious to see Studebaker get some more playing time. You can bet, if Vrabel can’t go, he’ll be coaching for Haley again.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I have no issues with Stude playing more

I just see this as a sign Vrabel may miss time. Why sign a guy like this when we have so many LB’s on the roster already unless you are going to be short this week because of injury. He’s taking someone’s place who was inactive last week so in order to play you’d have to bench someone else and I don’t know who that would be…

by Bsketbal52 on Oct 27, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

They just cut Ellison.

So they have a spot open. With T-Jax getting healthy, and Vrabel dinged up, it only makes sense to move that extra guy from the DL to LB. I wouldn’t read anymore into it than that. I doubt if he’ll ever see the active roster, and probably won’t even be a Chief in two weeks.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Although,

if he wasn’t going to see the active roster, I would see them signing someone much younger. A veteran like this seems to suggest an active roster spot. Why pay more for a practice player?

Keeping perspective...improvement is 6 wins, but I think 8 is attainable.

by BinSC on Oct 27, 2010 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Just in case they need him.

If you want a guy you can plug in for an emergency situation, it makes sense to sign a veteran.

I could be way off base, of course, but I just see it as typical week to week bottom of the roster juggling.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Drafted in 2000...

Sounds like a stop-gap player, at best. I doubt if he’ll see the active roster.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

You don't remember him?

He was a really good player for a while, I believe mostly with Atlanta and Philly. He was a stud at K-State, and before that, an all-everything player at Smith Center.

I'm not from the KC area.

I was just going by his profile. Looks like he’s near the end of his career. From what I can see, he hasn’t played since 2007, unless the mothership’s bio is incomplete.

by Tarkus on Oct 27, 2010 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope, I think that's accurate

He hasn’t played since then, starting with IR late in the 2006 season. Not sure what he’s been doing in the meantime, but New Orleans released him last season. He was still on the roster and practicing, I believe.

So glad we moved horne to the PS...I just dont see it...he was NOT nfl ready, but neither is tucker...

tucker last week almost cost us the ball by fading back and allowing a defender to step in front of it…and he made a major error on a return and was caught inside allowing a return up left sideline

Just food for thought...

I think the Chiefs ST fall off started after the bye week. Langsford being hurt seems to have hurt us on ST. Haley says he has been juggling the ST lineups to get everyone involved which seems to have hurt some as well.

Does anyone have the starting 4 ST lineups for each game? It would be interesting to see what changes if any have occurred from game to game.
