The Chiefs have a very good shot at breaking records this year. Our running game is averaging 176.5 yards a game so far this season and is on pace for 2824 yards total on the ground. The NFL Record is 3165 yards by the 1978 New England Patriots. We are currently 341 yards off that pace and need our per game average to be above 200 per game to pass that long standing record. I know our team is a long way from breaking that record but what makes me think that we can become the best running team in NFL history is our next four games. We play the Bills (32nd against the run), Oakland (28th), Denver (30th) and Arizona (29th). In our next 4 games we play 4 out of the 5 worst run defenses in the league. Is it a long shot yes but I can see us on pace to break the record by the end of week 12.
So far this season we have two running backs that are on pace to do something that has never happened in the NFL before.
Thomas Jones is on pace to run for 1228 yards this year. Jamaal Charles is on pace to run for 1304 yards. The 1972 Dolphins (Larry Zonka 1117 yards and Mercury Morris 1000 yards), The 1976 Steelers (Franco Harris 1128 yards and Rocky Bleier 1036 yards), The 1985 Cleveland Browns (Kevin Mack 1104 yards and Earnest Byner 1002 yards), The 2006 Falcons (MIchael Vick 1039 yards and Warrick Dunn 1140 yards), The 2008 NY Giants (Brandon Jacobs 1089 yards and Derrick Ward 1025 yards) and the 2009 Carolina Panthers (Jonathan Stewart 1133 yards and DeAngelo Williams 1117 yards) are the only teams in NFL history to have two players rush for over 1000 yards. No team has ever had two backs run for over 1200 a piece or have a single back run for over 1200 yards and the second back run for over 1000.
With our schedule the next four games we could see the most dominate running attack the NFL has ever seen. So what is your over/under for 3000 yards as a team and over/under on Jones and Charles rushing for 1200 a piece?
