Chiefs Reportedly Work Out Four Players Including Three Former Patriots

The Kansas City Chiefs worked out four players over the weekend, Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports. Three of the four players have familiarity with the New England Patriots while the other was just released from Jacksonville.

Here's the list of players:

Star-divide

WR Kelley Washington: He was with the Patriots in 2007 and 2008 but made virtually no impact there. He's 6'3", 218 pounds and a seven year veteran.

WR Sam Aiken: He was in New England in 2008 and 2009 with just nine catches in those two years. He was also on Eric Mangini's Browns for one game this year. He's a 6'2', 204 pound eight-year veteran.

LB Pierre Woods: He spent the last four seasons on the Patriots. He's 6'5" and 249 pounds as a four-year veteran.

S Gerald Alexander: He was a second round pick in 2007 and was released from the Jaguars just a few days before Sunday's game. He's 6'0" and 210 pounds.

The receivers are interesting particularly in light of Chris Chambers being inactive over the last two games. He's apparently been a healthy scratch though Todd Haley has had good things to say about him. We're not sure what's going on in that situation.

The Chiefs work guys out every week and keep them all on a list in case they need them down the road so keep these names in mind.

But will Aiken still have time to post here if we sign him?

Jones was fairly mediocre his first few years in the league (at least by the expectations that were placed on him)

and ever since he has been the placeholder for younger “better” backs every where he has been. Thomas Jones is more a victim of circumstance than anything else.

My point was...

There was nothing “wrong” with him all those years. He’s been a 1000 yard back pretty much everywhere he’s been. And I think we can clearly see that his attitude wasn’t a problem.

I would rather have Chambers on board as a #3...

I think Aiken would be a good #2 (and then a good #3, because D.Bowe a GREAT #2, and we’ll eventually find our AMAZING #1. Haha!)-

But Chambers as our #3 and mentoring our WR corps is priceless. He knows he’s near the end of his career. Let him play when we call for it, but we should develope Aiken in our system. He was pretty good across from Randy Moss… Give the kid a shot while hanging on to Chambers.

Vrabel? Yes. Thomas Jones? Hell yes. Chambers? Ummm…no. I don’t think we need our young guys learning the Chris “I got paid…so now I quit” Chambers attitude.

Umm...

If Todd Haley and the rest of the Staff puts Chambers in as a Player/Coach, that’s saying something. They know far more than you, so if they feel that he is the type of guy that is able to teach and mentor our WRs, then I’m PRRRROBABLY gonna trust them over you (who has never been and never will be in that locker room)… Sorry, brah.

That's fine

Yes, Haley and his Staff know far more than I do. But, I’ve never been much impressed with Chambers’ work ethic. Or his play. I see him as a veteran stop-gap who has outlived his usefullness to this team. But, that’s just me.

Chiefs will. But...will Cassel?

Ofcourse he's stop-gap, dude.

You can’t possibly think that Haley & Pioli were like, “We’re gonna build our future… And it starts with CHRIS CHAMBERS!!”

No! And I never said that Chambers is gonna be valuable to us ON the field. I’m simply saying that I’d rather have him playing behind Bowe (or a future #2), then the oh so often Practice-Squad guy that never really pans out and eventually gets cut and added nothing to the team. At least Chambers has knowledge of the game and is able to teach and more likely to produce something positive than f*cking Quinten Lawrence….But that’s just me.

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

Some facts

Sam Aiken – As a senior in 2002, Aiken had 68 catches for 990 yards, both school records, as well as four touchdowns. Aiken was drafted in the fourth round (127th) overall of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He was primarily a special teams player in his five seasons for the Bills, covering kicks and punts for a Bobby April-coached unit that was consistently among the best in the league. Aiken was named a special teams captain of the Patriots following the loss former special teams ace Larry Izzo in free agency.

Kelley Washington -He was taken in the 10th round of the June 1997 baseball draft by the Florida Marlins and signed as a shortstop. Washington spent four years in the minors.
Washington spent two seasons at the University of Tennessee. As a 22-year-old freshman in 2001, he caught 70 passes for 1080 yards and seven touchdowns and made the freshman All-American team.

Pierre Woods – He registered 92 tackles, 26 sacks, five forced fumbles and one interception during hisenior campaign in High School.
Woods was signed by the New England Patriots after going undrafted in the 2006 NFL Draft.
•Woods’ total of 44 special teams tackles since joining the Patriots in 2006 is more than any other Patriots player over that span from 2006-08 (Larry Izzo, 43).

Gerald Alexander – Winner of the "Iron Bronco" Strength Award given to the football program’s strongest athlete. He was selected from Boise State in the 2nd round of the 2007 NFL Draft as the 61st overall selection by the Detroit Lions. On June 26th 2009. He was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, for Dennis Northcutt.
Career totals include 153 tackles (104 solo), four INTs, 2.0 sacks, five forced fumbles, 11 special teams tackles, one fumble recovery and 10 passes defensed

When he was at Tennessee…

Chiefs Should look into James Hardy from IU, he was released by Buffalo, not sure if he’s been picked up though… if nothing else he is a good Red Zone target 6’6"

But Leonard Pope is 6’8…by that logic he should have a bunch of TD’s…

Hey guys, Patriots writer here:

Those three players are all special teamers. Aiken was our special teams captain last season and has stone hand. Kelley Washington was a gunner and was buried on the depth chart in 2007. Pierre Woods was inept at OLB and was mediocre on special teams.

None of them are offensive/defensive starters.

But it is sad that we didn’t sign Danario Alexander when we had the chance. Every other NFL team should feel dumb as well, but this guy was available for nothing, and we had him in…grr…

He has 78 career receiving yards. Might be a little early for NFL GM’s to feel dumb.

I'm suprised

We aren’t looking for another pass rusher off the edge. Teams are still having way too much time to throw the ball. I don’t know if it’s just the lack of blitzing or what. I wish Sheffield didn’t get hurt so we can so what he brings. Studebaker seems like a pretty good option too but we are sticking with Vrabel for the most part.

rec'd

I am concerned with Fitzpatrick coming in as the number 2 ranked QB in the league having put 350 up on the Ravens. We need the D that pressured Alex Smith and played the last half against the Jags. Sitting back letting things happen like the first half and we may be looking at another Houston shoot out.

I didn't see much of that game

but I read that the Ravens hardly blitzed Buffalo. Very odd. Does anyone know if that’s accurate? Why the hell would they do that?

I like the three former Patriots

Woods is solid and should contribute on special teams.

by Nick Britt on Oct 25, 2010 3:22 PM CDT reply actions

I think KC is always on the look-out for better WRs. Churning roster at that spot.

I think there are concerns with kickoff coverage. Some of it is probably due to Succop struggling to get depth AND hang time, but KC’s coverage unit on kickoffs has also looked pretty leaky.

Haley’s not kidding when he says that special teams was a significant factor in the decision, but I’m betting it has NOTHING to do with Chambers. I think maybe Copper is pushing Chambers for playing time, but this is unrelated to the roster-churning at the bottom of the depth chart (unless one of these prospects really wows).

by hmills110 on Oct 25, 2010 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

yeah the kickoff returns are making me nervous

I also have been flummoxed by the many pooch kicks we’ve been doing (although I don’t recall any in this game). I hadn’t read or heard anything about Succop struggling on deep kickoffs but that would answer. Is that your own analysis or did you read that somewhere?
