Jaguars vs. Chiefs: As Expected, KC Shuts Down Maurice Jones-Drew Rush Attack
The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 42-20 on Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. We made some predictions before the game and in a couple of places the Chiefs exceeded expectations. It was really a balanced performance from the Chiefs.
Here's a look at how I did with my pregame predictions.
Maurice Jones-Drew will not pass 100 yards rushing.
Correct. He had 47 yards on 16 carries which is less than three yards per carry. That is an outstanding job by the Chiefs defense shutting down the Jaguars most dangerous piece.
It wasn't all bad for MJD, though.
I said before the game that MJD would not be a good fantasy football player this week. I was wrong on that one as he added 74 yards receiving and a touchdown. It wasn't a wasted day for MJD but he couldn't get much of a rush going against the Chiefs.
The Chiefs win the turnover battle +2.
Wrong. The Chiefs won +3. I thought the Chiefs would be able to get an interception or two and they did that along with a big fumble recovery. The Chiefs defense wasn't sound the entire game but came up with huge plays (including six points).
The Chiefs will record three or more sacks.
Wrong. Tamba Hali got to Todd Bouman one time and pressured him a couple of other times. The Chiefs pass rush wasn't dominant as Bouman had time in the first half but the defense made up for it.
The Chiefs will create over 400 yards of offense.
Correct. The Chiefs had 193 yards passing and 236 rushing. They did a lot of things right on offense and I think this was almost the ideal type of game for Todd Haley and the coaching staff. They don't want to make Cassel the type of quarterback who has to win the game for them and he didn't have to on Sunday but he was part of the solution. Overall a solid, balanced performance from the Chiefs offense.
The Chiefs will win.
Correct. The Chiefs did win the game, 42-20.

My predictions came out pretty close and I even underestimated the number of turnovers on defense. Let us know how you did on your predictions.

Pathetic i am
1.) We will dominate the T.O.P WRONG
2.) Jags offense will not muster any meaningful drives except….. WRONG
3.) Jags will have one big play and score a TD WRONG
4.) We win a close game unless we score a defensive TD or a return then it’s more comfortable I’D SAY CORRECT
5.) JC goes over a hundred and has a score WRONG
27th in the league in pass defense...
Is perfectly fine with me as long as we are top 5 in run defense!! Holding MJD to 3 YPA is always a win in my book!
I agree.
I would also like to point out that this is partly due to scheme. I love how often the Chiefs had one safety deep (KL) with bump n run on the outside. This shows a great deal of faith in your corners but can lead to some receivers getting open. I have always though you cannot be a great defense team unless you can play solid man coverage now and again, those Tampa Teams baffle me.
Not sure where else to post this, but...
Has anyone else noticed that our young secondary is taking some terrible PI calls, most of which contact was initiated by the offensive player!?! These are the growing pains of a young secondary, I know, but it’s getting a little ridiculous!

Surprised by the MJD stat
Watching the game, I felt like MJD was having a better day than that. I remember being frustrated several times by the defense not keying on him. I guess a lot of that came from passing, specifically screen passes. Well done, D!
Same here.
I thought he had a better day than that. OTOH, I remember Dorsey and others stopping him several times behind the line, or at least for virtually no gain.
You’re right that screen passes probably made his “running game” look better than it was.
The touchdown pass to MJD on the wheel route is exactly why we need Studebaker to take Vrabel's spot and not let it go
it would be tough for any linebacker to cover MJD out of the backfield one-on-one, but Vrabel was beaten badly…like 3 yards behind MJD badly…
