Chiefs Sign Former Mizzou And Jaguars DT Atiyyah Ellison
The Kansas City Chiefs have filled the roster spot created by the trade of DE Alex Magee to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Chiefs announced on Wednesday DT Atiyyah Ellison is the newest Chief. Kansas Citians likely recognize the name as the former Mizzou Tigers tackle.
Ellison also coincidentally (or not) played for the Jacksonville Jaguars after the Carolina Panthers made him a third round pick in 2005. He's also played for the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers so it appears there's some 3-4 experience in there.
It's interesting that the Chiefs sign a former Jaguar just days before the Chiefs face the Jaguars. Todd Haley has previously said that they'll definitely talk to Chiefs players that have played for or are familiar with the upcoming opponent.
Ellison is last listed as 6'3" and 315 pounds.

Doubt he even sees the field.
This is all about scouting.
Chiefs 2010 Prediction: 8-8
Updated to 10-6 after the Bye Week.
-Pass the kool-aid.
Maybe so, but also keep in mind (and I apologize, because I’m blanking on what the actual rule is) that I’m pretty sure there are strict requirements for how long you have to keep the player on your active roster. That rule was designed specifically for reasons like this, where teams would sign players only to get an inside scoop.
My guess is, if they were to sign a player purely for scouting purposes, Houston or Indy would have been far better games to do that.
Practice squad players
I believe this is just if they take a player from another teams practice squad.
Yeah...
I think if you sign someone off another team’s practice squad, you have to keep him on your 53 man roster the rest of the season. I don’t believe there is any rule compelling them to keep a free agent signee.
I believe it's 3 weeks
Actually it’s only 3 weeks I believe that he must remain on your active roster…although he doesn’t have to be active for game day…
Okay...
But I think you can’t move him to your own practice squad, even after the three weeks, correct?
Not sure
I don’t think he is practice squad elligible anymore because of how long he has been in the league.
Well, that's something else entirely.
I wasn’t talking about Ellison specifically. My recollection is that you cannot move a player to your practice squad (that season) when signing him off another practice squad. That may have been what I was thinking with my comment above, about having to keep him on your 53 man roster.
Agree with Jon
Maybe they signed him for some scouting, but I’m guessing that they’re more interested in him as depth at NT. He will probably be expected to provide a few quality downs at NT to give Edwards & Toribio a break.
Anyone else notice that Edwards, Toribio & now Ellison are roughly about the same size (6’1" to 6’3" & 315 lbs.)? I guess this is what we’re looking for in a NT. We’ve stayed away from the big, giant heavies and looking for more athletic guys.
I wonder if the Chiefs checked out Toribio
and want to go another direction?
He will lead us from the Wilderness and then fade away when we are in the Promised Land.

Probable
You don’t hear alot about Toribio when he’s been playing. Wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him cut in the near future as Ellison comes up to speed.
Toribio
could go to the PS if they want to try to keep him.

?
So, who gets cut from the practice squad if Toribio goes there? Quentin Lawrence? He seems to have hit the revolving door for the Practice Squad the most. Don’t say Gales or a certain someone will… oh nevermind…
That's funny...
I think the biggest reason they signed him was to try and glean some info from him. Maybe we can try him at NT and see what happens. Former 3rd round pick? He’s gotta have some talent.

Agreed
5 teams in 5 years is not a good sign. I have never heard of him, does he have potential working under Crennel? Remember a lot of us were worried about Smith but Romeo has made him into quite an end. I would hate to think we only signed him for scouting purposes.
This is about as "Midwest" as you can get

Lets not crown this kid Jerry rice yet.
I do not fault the GM for passing on a wr that 32 NFLGM’s passed on for 7 rounds of the draft.
And that was a jab at the city of St Louis
for their crazy high crime rate, had nothing to do with the Mizzou football program. If i wanted to take a jab at the Tigers, i would have mentioned their troubles with alcohol, players and coaches alike. I could give two shits about what college kids do, unless its murder, rape, or beating of women. Numbers from where? FBI’s 2009 report has St. Louis leading the nation in violent crime rate (20.7 per 100,000). KC is 8th among cities w/ at least 250,000, so nothing to brag about here, either.

I don't believe it had to do with scouting the Jags, most likely for depth reasons.

Taller, but lighter
According to KCChiefs.com, Gales is 6’5" & 310 lbs. Ellison is 6’3" and 315 lbs. Not sure, but maybe they figure Gales needs another year of seasoning and Ellison is play ready. We’ll find out in a few weeks, I reckon.
PS
Maybe I’m looking in the wrong spot, but I can’t find Practice Squad players on our roster here at AP. Any chance that we could get them added here? Had to go to the Mothership to find out Gales vitals…
310 haha
That’s funny….
Maybe that is the weight of the olineman that Gales had for supper last night.
Truth be told Gales is every bit of 330-340. I guarantee that. Just look at him…he is a monster.

The Magee trade and now this pick up for what may be a relief position.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
I think
they had an opportunity to get some compensation for Magee
and pick up someone for free that is at least as good
It's all about the gameplan
Exactly
They probably evaluated this guy as being at least at the same level as Magee, so we got a pick for Magee and then replaced him with Ellison, meaning that our team gets a pick and is no worse off than before, if not better. Plus he’s played with J’ville and might be able to help us this week.
Win-win-win. Small little tiny wins, but wins nonetheless. Get enough small ones and that turns into big ones.

why wouldn’t they promote someone from the practice squad to the active roster and put this guy on the practice squad. They just plucked him off the street so there wasn’t anything keeping them from doing that.

Guess it can’t hurt. Toribio has been pretty damn quiet.
I eat nails for breakfast, tacks for snacks, and I sh*t nickel.
This thread brings out problem of 3-4.
IMO 3-4 requires a big ass body in middle that can plug a hole like a 340 pounder; But, has enough stamina and quickness of a smaller body. These guys are rare. Our current guys have neither great size nor quicks and get gassed late in games. Rotating two has not helped. Need another speed/quickness guy in passing situations.
Edwards got his sack
closer to the end of the game than the beginning.
And I have to disagree. Our NT play has been LIGHT YEARS ahead of last year, and a big part of that is rotating and keeping guys more fresh. 4
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
The is defense is a dominant nose tackle away from being great.
Trouble is that is the hardest position to find in a 3-4 defense.
edwards HAS been on the field
an awful lot. maaybe the film showed him getting tired in the 4th vs houston, resulting in this pick up.
Just like novocaine. give it time; always works..
The greater the fall, the grander the ascention..
Pioli and Haley wouldn't trade a player away if they were happy with the speed of their development.
My guess is they saw a better upside to Ellison…
Still believing CHIEFS WILL go 10-6
