Turning point - Houston
Sorry this post is coming out a few days later than I had originally planned. I wanted to find something that I can write about each week that is relevant to each week’s game. Now I know I am not one of the most talented writers that we have here on AP. But I did think I could find something that could generate a little conversation, and that’s the whole point, right?
I think that each of us while watching the game has that moment where we step back and say “there it is”. Sometimes it’s a good thing and sometimes it’s not depending on how the game turns out. It’s that “turning point” moment where the outcome of the game starts to be defined in our eyes. For some people it’s a big touchdown play and for others it could be a hustle play that gets a team going. It’s not necessarily momentum because that can change a few different times throughout the game. I am wanting to know what that moment was for you in the Houston game. I am not sure about everyone else and their “routine” in watching the game but I don’t miss plays. I see every play from kickoff till the clock reads 00:00. In the Houston game this was the play that made my stomach start to turn a little.
For me it was in the 4th quarter when we were still up 31-21, There was about 6 minutes left on the clock and Houston had just got the ball. Owen Daniels had just caught a pass for about 20 yards or so and got the ball out to the 40ish yard line. The next play, also to Daniels went for 27 yards to the KC 35 yard line. It was at this moment that I started to get a bad feeling. Maybe it was watching Vrabel try and run down a much younger, more athletic Daniels as he ran down the field and gave them two huge plays in a row. But until this point I thought we had a pretty good handle on things. It was then that I realized that there was going to be way too much time left on the clock for Houston to possibly get the ball back. Considering their drive started at their 14 yard line and in 2 plays and in just over a minute got the ball to our 35 yard line this was getting a little stressful.
Obviously we all know the outcome but I feel that this play, considering it followed another big play by the same player just gave them too many yards too quickly in a crucial part of the game. We called timeout immediately following this play and I don’t know if it was Haley or Crennel possibly feeling the same way, or someone trying to figure out why we lined up Mike Vrabel on Owen Daniels in the open field. I don’t know what the playcall was but Schaub obviously saw something he liked and it worked out for them on two huge plays.
A few other plays do come to mind during the game - The 3rd and 10 completion on Houston's final drive, our 3rd and short pass play to Moeaki, and the infamous PI call. All of these were no doubt big plays in the game. But the "turning point" to me was that play to Daniels.
Hopefully next week against Jacksonville we have the “turning point” play in our favor.

It has to be the 3rd and 2 pass to Moeaki
I just don’t see a reason why Haley didn’t run it. We’d been running it great all day. If we got it, we probably run out the clock for a win. we don’t make it and Houston are forced to burn a TO or let it run down to the 2 minute warning. I’m all for risks, as long as they are calculated risks. Haley needs to learn when its alright to make the risky call and when it isn’t alright. No point making the huge gamble at the end when there isn’t much time left to make up for it if it backfires
Can we be the AFC West Champions in 2010. You better believe it
Hali and Flowers are Pro Bowlers, even if the NFL fails to realise it
they had picked up a few short 3rd downs on passes earlier in the game
But i agree, gotta find a way to get the ball in JC or TJ’s hands in that situation. I wouldn’t even have minded giving it to TJ twice right then. Our OL knows it wins a game if they can get 2 yards on two chances.

the reason why he didn't run it is
because most of the time the coaching staff and the chiefs has done the oppisite of what everyone including the oppenets think we would do. It didn’t work on that play but that is one reason why we are a good team. Most of the time you can’t guess what we are gonna do and they change game plans and scheme’s every game. We run it on 3rd and long (which has worked well quite a few times) and have thrown it on 3rd and short. This is what haley and the coaching staff want, is to catch teams off gaurd and always have them second guessing what were gonna do.
SSSHHHHH
everyones forgot about it

I haven't forgotten
and that is my turning point of the game. Letting them start their drive at our 40 instead of at their 20 essentially gave them a field that was 40 yds shorter and the time on the clock it would have taken to go those 40 yds. The whole thing was bone headed!

I agree completely with that turning point
Seeing Vrabel have to take such a long angle in order to catch Daniels made me realize just how much slower he is.
Them getting those two plays so quickly really took the wind out of our D’s sails. Up until then we’d at least made them (for the most part) earn their yardage and use up some clock. If we could’ve made that drive last even another minute an a half the whole game changes.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
That's exactly what I thought
If nothing else, make them use a little more clock to get their points.

Great Thread and Insight!
Hadn’t really thought about it again, until you brought it up with this thread, but you’re right. Those 2 passes to Daniels started a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I remember being psyched about pinning them inside their 20 yard line, but that elation was sapped away by those 2 completions to Daniels — boom! In 2 plays they’re on our side of the field. That’s when the “oh shits” began for me.
Interestingly enough, Haley mentioned something similar to this in Monday’s press conference. He was talking about the second half and how the Texans creapt up on the defense when everyone was feeling good about being up 2 TDs. That was his explanation about how we’re not yet where we should be, because the team didn’t really see the Texans coming back into the game.
Interesting thoughts and great thread! Thanks Bajah!
Thanks Elmo
It’s amazing how nervous I got when we were still up by 10 with 5 minutes to go.
I definitely believe that we’ve learned our lesson on finishing games off.

Bajah, nicely done and well thought out ... and you are a MUCH better writer than many ...
like that one guy who pretends to be a lawyer, for example, or his sidekick phony doctor
I’d pretty much that was the turning point, hard to pinpoint one play, but certainly that drive … and yeah, the coverage just wan’t there, the stops weren’t made … as I’ve said earlier, have to give credit to the Texans who did what they needed to do, when they needed to do it

Mine was the catch by Johnson? in the back of the endzone for a TD
with 28 seconds left
We had the Chance to win right up to that moment
He will lead us from the Wilderness and then fade away when we are in the Promised Land.
I think that's where the wheels definitely came off
but the bolts loosened on that previous long drive

Momentum matters
and big plays for or against have much to do with it. Our lack of a pass rush was more evident than ever in this game. I think the momentum turned when Flowers lost his poise on the Pass Interfence call and Haley looked like he was sidetracked too. You never can dismiss what the big WR in Houston does, he is a superb athlete. Shaub is very good in his own right and being able to take apart our rookies cost us big time. What I question the most is why didn’t Carr have any help with that wideout?
For me it was the refs calling offsides on our 4th and 1
The Texans were in the neutral zone and that should have given us a new set of downs.
