Chiefs Trade DE Alex Magee To Buccaneers For Draft Pick

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that there was one deal at the NFL trade deadline.

Per Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs traded DE Alex Magee to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for draft conditions.

There's no word on the compensation but Schefter says the two sides exchanged 2011 draft picks.

The Chiefs spent a 3rd round pick on Magee in the 2009 draft. He's been disappointing since then even causing some to wonder whether he would be cut before the season.

More to come....

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

Incredibly well, actually.

3/4 of the way through this week’s breakdown, and he’s everywhere again. I’m sure that had plenty to do with Magee’s departure.

Yup.

And Dorsey’s emergence has kept Magee from seeing the field. With Shaun Smith now in the fold, there’s really very little reason to have Magee anymore.

I think there is a lot of kudos to go around

Haley is setting the base and providing the structure needed for other coaches and players to be successful if they put in the time.

The other coaches are doing a good job and thriving in that structured foundation.

Players are finding what it takes to win and they are the ones that are actually getting it done.

Exactly.

Magee is not better against the run than any of our DE’s, and he’s not better against the pass than Gilberry or Dorsey (the normal nickel DE’s), so I’m sure we dangled him out there and the Bucs bit with something Pioli liked.

There’s an obscene amount of players from that draft, especially early rounders, who aren’t even on NFL rosters anymore. There’s only 1/2 dozen players in Magees round that have made any impact or look to make any impact on their team. Believe what you want but the proof is in the pudding.

going from 7th to 5th would be comparable to moving from the 5th to the 4th. Either way, at least now we know we are rooting for TB to lose every game to give us a better swap. I’d be happy with moving up 20 spots or more, finding out which round will be interesting

Let's be real here

Seeing the success Haley has had with Herm’s talent, we would have been better off letting Herm run the 2009 draft and let Pioli take over when he was READY. Because, clearly, Pioli can’t draft without his scouts. Just compare this year’s class to the one before.

Just compare the talent pool of 2009 to 2010

Every team is in the same boat and actually we are above the league average in active roster players kept from that draft.

by GenericBrand on Oct 19, 2010 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

It's kind of easy to have a good draft when you get an extra first and 2 thirds though...

Herm had like 6 picks in the first 3 rounds. He’s turned that into Flowers, Dorsey, Albert and Charles. We still came up 2 picks short… Herm didn’t nail all of them.

Anyone could have drafted well with that many high round picks. Pioli only had 2 picks in the first 3 rounds in 2009. The margin for error was WAY more slim. Look at what he did with an extra 2nd this year.

If Herm was still here he'd have probably drafted for completely different needs

There’s no way we can make the switch to the 3-4 with out Jackson and MaGee (in case Dorsey doesn’t turn out, which it looks like he did).

Gales hasn't played a snap this year.

There’s a reason. Tyson’s the better option, and it allows Shaun Smith to play rotational DE and NT like he should. That means less 3-4 snaps for Gilberry, which will keep him fresher for the nickel rushes.

Let’s put it this way: Demorrio Williams was playing as a down lineman over Magee when Dorsey was tired. If Gales couldn’t get on the field then, he won’t with Tyson back.

-McCluster is considered for ROY, doesn't win it
- Arenas takes two to the house
- Carr becomes a legitimate corner
-Flowers gets jipped in Pro Bowl voting

Is that official?

I’d be happy with that, moving up two rounds for a guy who was probably going to be cut.

by Tarkus on Oct 19, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

not official at all

Just my guess

But either way were moving up a round. Schefter said both teams exchanged picks

hope so

hopefully, they aren’t just moving up in a given round

It's all about the gameplan

currently

but, I think KC will have a better record in the end

I think so too...

But it’s not a given. I don’t see an exchange in the same round.

by Tarkus on Oct 19, 2010 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I know that.

I’m just hoping to move up two rounds instead of one.

Does anyone have any idea what were looking like as far as numbers

for next years draft?

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I think we had all of our picks

So we now have one pick upgraded, plus we might get some Comp picks for Page and Wade Smith. Just a guess

He will lead us from the Wilderness and then fade away when we are in the Promised Land.

by Steve_Chiefs on Oct 19, 2010 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

were probably +2 picks right now

Page – 5th to 7th
Magee- minus one pick, plus 4th to seventh
Wade Smith- 4th to 7th compensatory

If all goes our way your looking at
1,2,3,44,55,7

stockpiling picks is the way to go!!

Stockpiling picks

is the Patriots Chiefs way to go =)

I was mad as $#%@ when we drafted Dexter McCluster and now I'm ordering his jersey......oh the irony! Go Chiefs!

Radio said we gave up Alex plus a pick

Made it sound like a 2nd or 3rd from Tampa is possible.

Like I always say, if youre not hustlin you’re being hustled

I don’t comment on this site for the people that are against me and think that I can’t do it. I comment for the people that have always believed in me. I comment for my family, for my wife, for my mother so it really comes down to that.

Wow.

If it’s 2nd or 3rd and we gave up a 4th or 5th, I’ll be ecstatic.

Upgrade round positions?

I’d go for swapping 2nd & 4ths with McGee being the proce if it’s more than say 8 spots.

NFL Draft Bible on Magee pre draft
However, Magee has been an inconsistent performer, making big plays in big spots but disappearing at other times. He had blocked field goals against Notre Dame and Michigan as a junior and added an additional blocked kick during his sophomore season—he should be able to contribute on special teams from day one. He struggles against double teams, doesn’t always play hard and often fails to get proper leverage, which is why his numbers don’t seem to match his talent.

"One of the teams asked me a running back question," McCluster said. "They said when you have the ball, do you focus on the guy who's in front of you or the next guy.

"I told them 99% of the time, I'm going to make that first guy miss. Then, I'm onto the next."

by Matt_Grbac on Oct 19, 2010 5:56 PM CDT reply actions

I'm calling it now. Magee and a 4th for a 3rd

And since the Chiefs and Bucs will probably have somewhere similar records, we’ll probably move up at least 32 spaces.

The page pick was a trade from NE, not a comp pick.

If we only lost Smith, we may not actually get any comp picks.

by MarylandChief on Oct 19, 2010 6:08 PM CDT reply actions

true

but, Page is a conditional pick, meaning if he meets certain criteria, KC gets a pick (or a higher one)

It's all about the gameplan

by stagdsp on Oct 19, 2010 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

What a Waste!

Hopefully we got a 3rd or a 4th for him.. If it was a 5th I will be upset. Would have been nice to have Antoine Caldwell at that pick considering he just help kick our butts.

by BigRatt on Oct 19, 2010 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

We just got something for a guy that wasn't going to play

This is a good thing no matter how you look at it.

We have young players that proved to be more effective and we got something for it. These are the small things that go a long ways.

It's happening............enjoy the ride
