Jared Allen v. Glenn Dorsey
Did anyone else watch the Monday Night game and think, "Wow, Jared Allen is getting owned"? Cause I did.
The Minnesota Vikings are probably the biggest failure/joke of this NFL season. I wont get into how stupid it is to trade away draft picks for aging players, totally neglect key aspects of your team because you cannot afford to improve them - usually because you've spent too much money on one side of the ball.
They remind me alot of the Chiefs under Vermeil. If they dont have talent at one position, who cares, trade a high round pick for someone thats 32 and hope that you can get into the playoffs and make a run before your Super Bowl years are done.
Jared Allen went to a team 3 years ago who's Super Bowl window was just opening. I think it's safe to say that window is closed. The team is old, slow, and playing very mediocre football for being "the most talented team in the NFC".
Just like their Super Bowl run is over and done with, I'm not so sure Jared Allen's best days aren't behind him. Let's give the NY Jets some credit, their LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson is a man beast and probably owns most defensive ends on any given Sunday. I really had not been following Jared Allen at all since he left the Chiefs, so I had no idea if maybe he just had a bad game, maybe he was hurt, maybe the Vikings were playing a different defense against the lackluster Jets offense, I didnt know. What I found this morning shocked me.
Through 4 games of NFL football in 2010:
Glenn Dorsey: 15 tackles, 1 sack
Jared Allen: 16 tackles, 1 sack
I really dont know what to make of it. I really dont. In the pre-season it was widely reported that the Chiefs needed people like Glenn Dorsey to step their game up in order for this team to be even mediocre. I think its safe to say that Glenn Dorsey is competing with Derrick Johnson right now for defensive "most improved".
I'm really not sure what to make of Dorsey's improvement or Allen's decline in numbers (I personally believe its because his 2, 300 lb defensive tackles are now in their mid 30's, always hurt, and slow as hell).
Just wanted to post these stats that I found interesting and somehow ended up here. Thoughts?

I would compare Allen more to Tamba but nice stat comparison regardless.
I think guys like Tamba and Dorsey have better work ethics then Allen. When he wants to play he’s one of the best in the league but he just doesn’t seem to have that motivation this season.

If I had all the money in the world
I’d have a real hard time getting out of bed with a “go getter” attitude as well……
Someone thought Tamba Hali's stats needed to be posted as well.
So here they are:
Tamba Hali – 2010
14 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 foreced fumbles
and countless holds against him that went uncalled.

The Williams wall is falling down
You stated it above and that is the reason Allen does not have such a great impact. They are having trouble stuffing the run leading to those 3rd and long situations when they can just pin their ears back and get after the QB.
“The most talented team in the NFC” Since when is that not the Cowboys?
The Vikings still have pieces in place to be a good team in coming years, but Favre is Favre and always wants to throw the ball around when the Vikings(before Favre) were built to pound the ball with All Day.

I agree that the Williams Wall is not dominating this year
Allen has received many of the double teams this year (at least what I’ve seen of the Vikings so I could be wrong). That was one thing that made them so deadly last year is that an offense had to choose their poison in who they were going to put a double team on and who they would let work 1-on-1. The Williams Wall is not beating their 1-on-1’s in the Jets game leaving Allen to be double teamed and when that double team includes a Pro Bowl LT, Allen is not going to do much. However, Edwards made two sacks that game and I have to wonder how much of that had to do with so much attention paid to the left side of the O-line.

It was surprising how well the Jets shut down the
Vikings front 4

I would say I was surprised too
I thought the Vikings would have put up a better fight, but with the Williams Wall not being their usual tag team, I guess it makes sense when they were going against the best O-line in the NFL from last season.

Well this was the first time I really watched the Vikings
I didn’t know just how bad the Williams wall looked. I know they are deep with Dlinemen, how many can really step in to fill those shoes though..

Not many
Kevin Williams is pretty spectacular when he’s on his game. But what I saw during the Jets game, the Jets were taking advantage of his great first and explosiveness and letting him take himself out of the play much like we were doing against Dwight Freeney.
Pat Williams may be declining because of his age. He’s 37 years old and when you are as strong as he is, it makes sense that he can still play but he may not match up as well against that young Jets O-line. Pat looked sluggish against the Jets and I did not see him getting any kind of push.

Going to be interesting to keep tabs on their Dline
To see if they try to find replacements for the Williams Wall, or go another direction completely with like 2 passrush DTs, or 2 runstuff DTs, 3 DEs/1 DT, etc

agreed
something funny that I’ve noticed, every time a “good” player is traded from the Patriots, or let go, they always immediately fall off. I think we’ll see that with Moss
2010 predictions live by em die by em
- Chiefs do what they did last year and double their win total.. Good for a second place finish in the AFC West
-McCluster is considered for ROY, doesn't win it
- Arenas takes two to the house
- Carr becomes a legitimate corner
-Flowers gets jipped in Pro Bowl voting
I don't know 808. I believe the Moss move was strictly financial.
Many of his best attributes came from God without him having to do anything. He’s 6’4, hes not as fast as he was, but still faster than most, he has great hands, and he can still jump.
But you are right though. Many players fall off after they leave. I think much of that had to do with NE ability to scheme around their players and to recognize when the talent was declining and when it wasn’t. That also explains why so called dead players can come to life in New England. You want to know the best news? I think most of that was Pioli.
"If ifs mattered, everyone would be undefeated." Enite
It does make you wonder how much was Pioli
because man, I thought they would have gotten more from the Vikings for Moss. However, the Vikings restructured Moss’ contract so that they could not place the franchise tag on him. So it really could be that Moss is a FA after the season. Wouldn’t it be funny if he returns to the Patriots next season?
I do agree that the Patriots have a great scheme to get the best out of their players, and they do not keep guys they do not need. The Seymour trade was surprising, but Seymour has not looked nearly as dominant as he was for the Pats, so props to them for getting a 1st round pick out of that.

Not so sure I agree with you on the Vikes still having pieces
This will be Brett Favre’s last year…..that is if he even makes it through this year.
Tavaris Jackson is not the answer. A lifetime QB rating of 77 and a record of 10-9 doesnt spell “team heading for the playoffs” to me.
My whole issue from day 1 with the Vikings is they have totally neglected the QB position for 3 seasons. One of these days I’ll take the time to look at all of the QB’s the Vikings could have had in the last few drafts had they not spent all of their draft picks on high priced free agents or plugging holes.
Ask Dick Vermeil and Carl Peterson how neglecting positions and trading away draft picks worked out for them. I hope Minnesota fans enjoyed a couple years of going to the playoffs – they wont be back for at least 3 years.
They still have good lines
Aging yes but the key parts are there. They have outside play makers, good te, great rb… doesn’t sound like any pieces to me either.

We are seeing a growing trend of teams making it into the playoffs with rookie QBs
and those teams winning in the playoffs. It looks like the upcoming draft is a good draft for QBs, so let’s see what they do then. By the way, you do not talk about any other position than QB, so you did not really disprove that the Vikings do not still have pieces for a playoff team going forward.

Id be more inclined to look at DJ as "Comeback" player of the year
and probably Dorsey as most improved.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
how can he be comeback player
wheres he coming back to? this is the first year he has played at this level…He was expected to be bad ass and flashed it sometimes, but he never was consistent..So improved yes, comeback player no

again, we're seeing the effect of players falling off after getting off steroids.
I’m of coarse talking about the Williams wall… Without them, Jared Allen is the only one that offensive lines have to worry about. But I do think that Allen is falling off.. In KC he was able to do it all by himself and still get a ridiculous amount of sacks. He seems to be struggling with that lately.

Allen.
I will take Dorsey over Allen any day. Keep in mind these stats are not comparable. Allen plays in a 43 while Dorsey plays in a 34. Huge difference in the two positions. Allen didn’t have that much help on the D line when he was in KC either.
Dorsey>Allen
I think it is a great comparison because Dorsey was expected to fill that role.
I definitely wouldn’t mind Dorsey getting most improved, but Carr would get my vote.

Jared Allen
up intill this year I have always been pissed off when I thought about us trading Allen. Tamba is a beast and took his role in getting to the qb and gettin sacks. Dorsey is a beast in the making. I think Allen is still the same old Allen that is a great player. Last year at around this time he only had 2 sacks and started the season slow on sacks. But he still ended the year with around 14. It won’t be long before him and Tony G wish they still played here.
to be fair
cowboys were number 1 in fewest sacks allowed before last week
Dexter McCluster for Rookie of the Year
2011 Chiefs Record Prediction: 8-8

CHIEFS WILL
BELIEVE, BELIEVE, BELIEVE!
Hard to compare
the two because they play different positions in different schemes. Vikings run a 4-3 and the Chiefs, of course, run the 3-4. That being said, the stats should favor Jared Allen more than they are showing. Overall, the Vikings have started off very slow and don’t have the same drive the Chiefs have – it seems as if they’ve come to expect dominance. Don’t be surprised if Jared Allen picks it up in the comming weeks. I fully expect he and the Vikings to be in full form in a couple of weeks and to dominate the Cowboys this week. As for Dorsey, stats don’t matter as much but he’s still holding his own.
