Give Matt Cassel a Break!

72327_chiefs_colts_football_small_medium

via cdn2.sbnation.com

I will admit that I have yelled at Matt during games this year. He has given us all plenty to be upset about. However, I'm not sure any QB (outside of Peyton Manning) would do much better had they gone through what Cassel has experienced since coming to KC. Here are a few things to consider:

Star-divide

Nightmares Of Running For His Life!

If you just look back on last year, Matt had the pleasure of scrambling for his life on nearly every passing play. Can you even begin to imagine coming from New England, with perhaps one of the best OL's in the league, to the limp protection KC was offering for most of last year? Toward the end of the year, the line was improving. It really showed in the Denver game when Matt had some time to think back there. When he did, he nearly always made the right decision. However, one or two games of decent protection does not take aware the nightmares of running for your life (that Matt no doubt had on many long sleepless nights)!

It is easy to criticize the man, but walk a mile in his shoes. One thing you must admit about Matt is that he is durable. He takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Fast forward to 2010

Suddenly the OL has come to play, and is protecting Matt more than he is used to. Yet, he still has nightmares. Deep in his subconscious mind those fears haunt him. The only thing that will take it away is time. Playing time on the battle field. It is easy to say "Trust Your Team Mates".

If the first dog you ever saw viciously attacked you, would you believe the next dog you encountered was not going to do the same? Even if folks around you were saying "You can trust Spot", your subconscious mind would tell you otherwise. It would take several positive experiences with friendly dogs before you could overcome your fear that all dogs are bad. Does that mean that you will NEVER get to a point where you could pet a dog? NO! You can if you want to, and are willing to work on it.

Matt IS working on it. And he WANTS to be a top flight QB in this league. He has the skill to get there. At times he shines with courage (like the forth down play on the last drive in Indy, where he was about to be hit with a Mike Vick-type sandwich and threw a laser bullet to Bowe for the first down). At other times he looks like a scared boy on a field of vicious dogs with no protection (like the play in Indy where he threw the ball out of bounds when there were no defenders within 10 yards of him).

Players Dropping Passes

I know this is part of the game, but Matt has had to deal with more than his share of dropped balls. It all goes against his record, even when the ball is right on the money. It is hard to drive your team down the field and get into a rhythm if players keep dropping your passes. You can't run on every play.

Only 4 Games Into The Season - Fans & Media Already Calling For His Head

Nothing endures a QB to a city and team like fan support! When reporters, media, fans, and every other Joe around you is doubting your ability, things can get tough! Give this man a chance. Sure, the rest of the team is performing better than Matt right now. Cassel is also playing the most difficult position in the NFL! Mindset is BIG for any position, but it is HUGE for NFL QBs. I think we will see Matt start to improve (and so will all the players around him dropping balls) as the season goes along. He has guts, stamina, ability. The only thing holding him back right now is mindset, and that does not get corrected overnight.

The good news for us Chief fans is that the boys are now 3-1. Houston might well be the game that turns Cassel's season around. They have a weak and banged up secondary. Matt has already traveled to one of the toughest places to play (Indy), and did an above average job. This could well be the week that Matt lights it up, and then watch as the naysayers become Matt Cassel fans!

I have to agree...

…100%. I think all this talk of benching Cassel and he is a “mistake” are WAAAAY overboard. The guy is basically in his second year and still learning a lot about the NFL, and is on his 3rd o-coordinator in 3 years since he was with the Pats in 2008.

Cut the guy some slack people! I can guarantee that we don’t know jack about what he is being told to do and how much he is improvising out there. Haley has made it very clear that he wants NO turnovers. That’s what this team can ill-afford and I think Cassel is doing a great job with what he has to work with.

Granted, he’s looked sloppy at times, but at times he’s also looked golden. Let’s give the guy a break and get behind him folks. All this negativity is only bringing the dude’s karma down!!

Thank you for your comment. I agree. There has been a bash fest going on. With all the nrgativity from the haters posted everywhere, I felt embarrassed to be a Chiefs fan. It takes patience to support this young transitioning team. I am excited about this team. Rome was not built in a day. The losing culture had to be changed in the locker room and maybe it needs to change with some of the fans. Karma works both ways. I support Matt Cassel and the Chiefs. GOOO CHIEFS!!!!

by scchieffan on Oct 13, 2010 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I would amend that

personally by saying I support the Chiefs as a whole. individual players come and go based on a variety of reasons, talent or lack of it, money, “fitting in” or not, etc…

I don’t give a rat’s rear-quarters about Cassel except that he is part of the team.

As a Chief, he has my support. AS an individual player, he lacks what I would expect from an NFL starting QB, I wouldn’t follow his individual career to another team the way I did Trent Green or others.

by bigbearomaha on Oct 13, 2010 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I would follow his career

To me this is still a team growing including the quarterback. I will just have to disagree with your opinion of him. Really, it’s a shame you don’t care one rat’s rear quarters about him, he is a human being first.

by scchieffan on Oct 13, 2010 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions

that's cool

we can agree to disagree.

i never said I don’t care about him as a human being. i was referring to him as a football player.

by bigbearomaha on Oct 13, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't vote.

I am beginning to think that what you see is what you get. I don’t think there is going to be any significant change either way.

by saskwatch on Oct 12, 2010 1:49 PM CDT reply actions

i think he will improve

if Bowe had caught that ball, and Cassel would have completed that fourth down everyone would be singing praises. I think he will improve and hopefully become what we hope he has always been.

The picture is a Chiefs pumpkin, yeah that is right a Chiefs pumpkin.

Colts

If you watched the colts game on Sunday, you should of noticed the progress of Matt Cassel. He threw two passes to Dwayne Bowe and it hit him right in the hands and he dropped it. He threw a pass late in the game to Bowe that was absolutely perfect. He throws crazy passes sometimes BUT this is only his second year as an NFL starter.
He has not been great but looked alright. I say that Brodie Croyle at this point should get another chance and he should play for part of a game at least. Croyle has never won a game but hey why not give it a shot. Maybe he might do better with the new coaches.

I'm not a hater, but I don't see how he can do worse.

Someone has got to make a play other than Moeaki, and then the others will follow.

by Helmets on Oct 12, 2010 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

Can you even begin to imagine coming from New England, with perhaps one of the best OL’s in the league, to the limp protection KC was offering for most of last year?

If I remember right, Cassel had something like 45 sacks in NE in 2008. Note: I’m sure that wasn’t all the line because Cassel is known for holding onto the ball and taking a lot of sacks. In this regard, Cassel has developed nicely. Instead of taking a sack, he throws in the direction of a receiver who isn’t necessarily open to a place that if it were possible his receivers might catch the ball.

Now that’s not saying his passes are always crisp…in the 49ers game they were. But inconsistency is probably what we’re talking about here. Matt Leinert was a much better QB coming out of USC, but hasn’t made it in the NFL…yet. Cassel is in his 3rd year starting as an NFL QB. If he were the same QB he was in 2008 I would be all for benching him. But he isn’t. He has improved in a number of ways. Zero INT’s and one self-made sack and a better QB rating than Manning in the most recent game says that he’s developing nicely.

Here’s the huge unanswered question: Did Cassel do what the Coaches asked him to do??? Haley says, “Yes!” We’ll probably never know the details of the full answer to the follow-up question “How?”

If you want to argue he didn’t throw enough, then you have to blame Weiss. Don’t blame the passer.

Was he accurate enough? You can only try to make that argument going through the tape pass play by pass play. So far I haven’t seen a post analyzing the passing game noting the mistakes he made and showing where he made good decisions and plays. Until someone does, and until someone proves that he deserves the kind of ridicule he’s getting, then I’m going to have to agree with Haley who said that mistakes were made teamwide. This was a team loss and nothing more.

[The Kansas City Chiefs] are now a team that knows how to win. The power that was unleashed in that last stand (Chargers wk 1) is a rare thing. Teams spend tons of money in search of it, but it can only be found in the collective conciousness created by team builders.

and another stat he is near top in league in is INT. He is right behind two guys by the name of P.manning and Brady.

The thing I love about Matt is

He will lower his shoulder and run someone over to get a first down instead of sliding or running out of bounds. I’m just not sure if that means he’s tough or stupid…

Yeah, Pretty Much

I’m not for benching Cassel either (mainly because Brodie Croyle is an even worse option) but if the guy isn’t able to take some well-deserved criticism for his performance and rise above it, then he shouldn’t be starting for an NFL team.

And it’s just criticism of his performance…not us saying that Matt Cassel is a horrible person who should be flogged and thrown into prison. Jeez…get some perspective. Every football player knows that criticism of performance is part of the deal going into an NFL career. And it’s not like he’s given us a lot of reasons to say that he’s a franchise QB. It’s Cassel’s job to show that he’s the franchise QB and deserving of praise, not our job to make excuses for why he isn’t doing that

I say cut 'em

The fact that Cassel said he played efficiently tells me he has no clue what he is doing. I am still irritated by that comment.

by Big Reese on Oct 12, 2010 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

efficient is accurate.

16 for 29 considering 3 dropped passes ain’t bad. No interceptions.

I interpret it as _ I didn’t do anything that caused us to lose the game and I didn’t do anything to help us win the game. I was just efficient. Appliances, cars, inanimate objects are efficient. Sound accurate to me. He is about as inanimate as they come.

by grid_iron on Oct 13, 2010 1:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I am sick of the debate

Cassel hasn’t shown really anything this year. The next few games are against terrible pass defenses so I think they will show a lot. He has to show some improvement or a glimmer of hope though. Hopefully he can step it up but if he doesn’t then changing to Croyle may be the only option.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

by Fozzyboyd on Oct 12, 2010 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

I'm sick of the debate, too.

It should be obvious to anyone that Cassel is not the long term answer at QB for this team. Neither are Bowe and Chambers. But, since a trade for competent replacements at this point in the season is about as likely as the pope coming out in favor of birth control, I’ll wait through these mediocrities for the next 12 games…BUT I WON’T LIKE IT.

give him a break

The arm or the leg?

Are you smokin crack or something? Cassel had more sacks in NE than he did last year in KC. He was largely to blame for a lot of the sacks both there and here. He even admitted it at the beginning of the year. BTW – both Cassel and the OL have made a great improvement in this area.

People will quit calling for his head when he starts:
1. Showing some emotion and leadership.
2. Showing some qualities of a good QB.
a. get rid of happy feet
b. look past the primary receiver when he is covered.
c. read the defense and audible (can you say sack problem)
d. hit receivers in stride (at least occasionally)
e. create – make people take notice and say holy crap that was a great play!
f. Win a game – (He hasn’t given any away, but “he” hasn’t won any either)

I could live with an interception or two every week if he would throw for 350 yards with 3 TDs. Playing it safe with these dink and dunk passes and 150 yards a week ain’t going to cut it. A good completion percentage and no interceptions don’t mean squat if you don’t put points on the board.

In 4 games he has 4 TDs. One from a trick play. One from “the catch of the year”. One were Tony was so wide open a blind man could have hit him in the end zone.

Bowe caught one and has cost him one (probably Matt’s best pass of the year and Bowe dropped it).

I don’t blame Cassel for the loss last week. Likewise I don’t credit him with any of the 3 wins. We have won and lost despite Cassel not because of him. For $15M a year, I think he should be winning some games for us. Cassel is one of the top paid QB’s in the NFL. He is currently ranked 25th. We are not getting good value for our money.

by grid_iron on Oct 13, 2010 1:04 AM CDT reply actions   2 recs

Agreed

Basically, Cassel’s been more of a Neil O’Donnell or Trent Dilfer than a franchise QB…he shows up every week and certainly isn’t the worst QB in the league, but he’s not performing at a level commensurate with his paycheck and he’s not shown himself to be someone who can really push a team to perform better than expectations. He’s just sort of there…more of a complementary guy that you look to replace as soon as you can find someone likely to be an upgrade.

So his 3 TDs in the SF game didnt win us that game? Him leading us down the field in the 4th quarter against Cleveland to kick the go ahead fg didnt win us that game?

by choirboy on Oct 13, 2010 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

He is not the answer..

I would agree with you that it has been tough for him, and I actually like the guys work ethic, leadership, and willingness to work hard. But in all reality I feel that he is just a glorified backup QB. Since he stepped off the football field in high school he has been a backup with good reason. I need to throw out his 2008 stats in New England. Any halfway decent QB could have had fairly good stats taking over arguably the best team in football at the time. Lets do a little comparison shall we…

  Kansas City QB’s since 2007

Year Name Comp% TD/INT Ratio QB Rating
2007 Damon Huard 62.0 11/13 76.8

2007 Brodie Croyle 56.7 6/6 69.9

2008 Tyler Thigpen 54.8 18/12 76.0

2009 Matt Cassel 55.0 16/16 69.9

2010* Matt Cassel 54.7 4/3 74.0

If Huard,Croyle, and Thigpen were not the long term answers, based on performance, Cassel is NOT THE ANSWER…

by okoyefan on Oct 13, 2010 1:50 PM CDT reply actions

Huge difference tho

Cassel has a line to work with this year. A running back averaging more than 2.7. A tight end that is starting to look as good as 88. A defense and special teams that put points on the board and much improved field position.
And you want to give the 25th ranked QB in the NFL credit for the wins.
I think not…………………………..

by grid_iron on Oct 13, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

So

Cassel throws 3 TDs against SF and leads us on a 14 play 68 yard drive to kick the game winning fg against Cleveland, a drive in which he went 5 of 7 for 50 yards and he gets no credit for those wins?

by badassz1987 on Oct 13, 2010 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Nope

I would expect a 3rd string QB to be able to complete most of the passes that Cassel has completed this year.
Of coarse he should get a small share of the credit since he is part of the offense.

I would love to see Cassel become a pro bowl QB. I just don’t think he has the tools.

I have seen numerous plays where I’m saying WTF. I can’t think of one where I have said that was an awesome throw, man he really threaded the needle with that one.

3 of the 4 TD’s Cassel has thrown this year have been to wide open receivers. I just have trouble giving him credit for wins when he’s not doing much more.

Also worth mentioning is that he is only averaging 162 yds per game and I don’t know the number, but a huge percentage of that has to be YAC.

by grid_iron on Oct 13, 2010 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

okiechieffan,seriously?

60 plus MILLION dollars & you’re saying nightmares? It’s time for him to put up or sit down.I don’t care what happens on any play,he should just forget it & move on.No excuses. He’s not playing up to his contract.Period!

by chiefs63 on Oct 13, 2010 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

Keep in mind

His contract is incentive laced not guaranteed. If you want to judge Cassle,he is a 2nd year 2nd round pick and should be judged as that.So he is not that bad.All that said he need to improve and I am sure he kows it.The whole passing game does.Aside from Tony M they have all had butter fingers! The most important thing is his intangables. He seems like a good leader. He just need to make faster and better reads.
