Apologize? For What? Bumping Into The Ceiling?
From the FanPosts. This is an excellent read. Glad to have another viewpoint of Matt Cassel. -Joel
I lost my way Chiefs fans. I got so caught up in the minutae of all the micro-managing that goes on here at AP, that I forgot my purpose. More specifically, the Chiefs purpose. I allowed all the name calling, catter-walling, ranting, raving posters to Shaun Smith me. After only 5 weeks of the 2010 season, I fell victim to worrying about my own junk more than I was worrying about the Chiefs staying on the path. My own inability to stay focused (MY Dwayne Bowe if you will) caused me to feel lost.
"Why is Matt Cassel not the guy?" I opined. "What in the hell is the matter with Bowe? He makes circus catches one week only to drop the stuff that hits him right in the hands the next?"I fumed. "Where was the magic of the Weis offensive play calling?" I cried. Right when I was sitting down there in dirt, feeling so low that I could play handball on the curb, I did the only thing that was left to do. I started over. Once the clouds were blown away and the camoflage removed I felt invigorated. You know why? I realized that the Chiefs haven't lost their way. Far from it. They are on the path, straight and true as ever. Pioli, Haley, Weis and Crennel haven't strayed a step and they have the team with them. The proof lies in the plan. I shall elucidate.
The Beginning. When, exactly, did the Chiefs current journey begin? I would argue that it began in 2001 in New England. That was when Scott Pioli, Bill Belechick, Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel began development of their version of football success. Ultimately, it was embodied in the New England Patriots.
via cache.boston.com
The image above is commonly referred to as a defense. This is the one that Romeo took over back in the day. Early in the process they garnered the descriptors newer, fresher and faster. Some would use those same words to describe our beloved Chiefs defense this year. They had several (at the time) relatively unknown players, many of whom would go on to become well known to say the least. Regardless of the fact that they were young and inexperienced in the NFL, they listened to Romeo, played hard and kicked ass.
My crystal ball indicates that there is another version of this story unfolding in KC. With each game played, our defense seems to grab just a bit higher on the rope and pull themselves up another notch. They just went into the defending AFC champion Indianapolis Colts HOUSE and denied Mr. Football a passing Touchdown. Just how many squads will do that this year? All will try, but how many will succeed?
These guys and some of their closest friends DID it. Mr. Football even said that the Chiefs weren't giving up anything (If I may paraphrase). This group has succeeded beyond expectations--or have they? It depends on who you ask.
I'll bet Romeo wouldn't say that they have performed beyond expectations. Let's compare '01 Pats vs '10 Chiefs D.
'01 Pats for entire season: Defense gave up 334.5 ypg total, 200 ypg passing and 135 ypg rushing and 17 pts per game.
'10 Chiefs thru 4 games: Defense gave up 320 ypg total, 240 ypg passing and 81 ypg rushing and 14.25 pts per game.
It would appear that the defense is on the path. In fact, they are slightly ahead of what the '01 Pats did. Don't forget now, we are talking about a Super Bowl winning year vs these Chiefs having already played the likes of Phyllis Rivers and Mr. Football?! And we have given up LESS points per game so far?! That is scary good my friends. Does anyone beside me think this is significant?
Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit. Maybe things aren't as bleak as a lot of the banter here on AP would suggest. We are 3-1 after all. Our schedule looks to be in our favor, especially with our defense seemingly getting ready to shift into third gear.
What's that? It's not the defense that is the problem? Oh. You say it's that incompetant QB #7 (we all know who is disrespecting Matt Cassel in this fashion) that is the main problem? In addition, throw in that lousy DBowe as well. I gotta tell ya, I was hoping you would say that.
That would bring us to this guy. Sir Thomas Brady. Let's see what kind of numbers Brady had in that Superbowl winning season. Brady only got to play in 15 regular season games that year becasue Drew Bledsoe started the year as starter and went down in the second game of the season. I think that is close enough to a full season for comparison so let's get on with it.
In 2001 Tom Brady went 264/413 for 2843 yds and a 63.9% completion rate, 18 TDs, 12 Ints. He finished the season with an 86.5 rating and averaged 27.5 attempts per game. That is an average passing yards per game of 189.5. Twice that year Brady was held to under 100 yds passing.
FF to 2010. Matt Cassel in four games this season as gone 58/106 for 650 yds and a 54.7% completion rate, 4 TDs, 3 Ints. He currently has a 74 rating and is averaging 26.6 attempts per game. That is an average passing yards per game of 162.5. So far this year Cassel has been held to under 100 yds passing only once.
If you extrapolate Cassel's numbers for the season wihout improvement he would go 232/424 for 2600 yds, 16 TDs and 12 ints. Does anybody but me see a game plan here? Do you think that Cassel is being put into a preprogrammed plan that says so many passes vs so many rushes per game? The similarity cannot be coincidence with so many of the same puppet masters controlling the strings. Even if Cassel is underperforming, the '01 Pats WON a Super Bowl with similar numbers. I would bet that Cassel finishes the year with similar numbers to Brady's from '01. I hope that they are better numbers but if Super Bowl winning numbers is all we can get, well, I'll take it.
via blogs.pitch.com
Isn't it just possible that Cassel is doing what he is expected to do? If you listen to Coach Haley's presser from Monday it sure sounds like it to me. This wouldn't be the first time that the coaches knew what they were talking about better than the fans either. Examples? Dorsey and TJax were not busts after all were they? Pioli's 2010 draft class was not a mistake was it?
If that is the case, then all the detractors need to quiet down and get used to this kind of offensive performance because it is designed to be like it is. This is the baseline of what you will see this season. Yes, there will be a few games where Cassel will have 200--300 yds passing but they will be few and far between. Brady only had one outing in 2001 that went for more than 300 yds and that was for 345 against the Chargers. The Pats scored 29 points in that game and it was their third highest total of the season. Interestingly, the Pats beat the Colts that year in their highest scoring affair. The Pats scored 44 points but Brady only threw for 159 and no TDs. Antowain Smith ran for two scores, Kevin Faulk ran for one, the Defense had two pick six INTS and Viniteri had 3 FGs. Not very impressive stats from that offense. Sounds an awful lot like the offense that we have been seeing from the Chiefs this year doesn't it? You are what your record says you are, even if all those wins were uglier than pigs in slop.
Oh, and this guy?
Well, let's just say that Mr. Bowe is not as far off his programming as I might have thought either.
The 2001 Patriots team had one primary receiver in Troy Brown. He was supported by David Patten and Terry Glenn. Glenn only played in 4 games that year so I will compare Bowe to the other two.
Troy Brown played in 16 games and had 101 recpts for 1199 yds and 5 TDs.
David Patten played in 16 games and had 51 recpts for 749 yds and 4 TDs.
Dwayne Bowe has played four games and has 9 recpts for 152 yds and 1 TD.
If you extrapolate Bowe's numbers (and assume no improvement), he will have 36 recpts for 608 yds and 4 TDs.
He sounds a lot more like Patten than Brown at this point. Once again, we seem to be looking for that legit #1 receiver. Still, Bowe is relatively close to the seconday receiver that played on that '01 Patriots team. If Bowe does improve to Troy Brown kind of numbers, what will that say about Mr. Cassel? Uh-oh, we only have 12 games left to find out!
I don't know about you, but once again I can see the future by looking backward. This is not this coaching staffs first rodeo. Nor is it the first time around for a few guys like Vrabel, Waters, Jones, Pope, Copper, Lilja and McGraw.
I will have to say that there are two descriptors used frequently here on AP that I really don't like. Haters and Apologists. Anytime somebody states their opinion in a negative way about a player, it does not mean that person is a hater. It would be nice, however, if that person would support their comments with something more than expletives about a particular players abilities or worse, their (lack of) intelligence. That would give you some cred in the eyes of Chiefs nation.
Apologists? Anytime someone expresses a belief in an as yet unsubstantiated players ability in a positive fashion it doesn't mean that person is an apologist. To apologize is to acknowledge faults or shortcomings. I have said that I think Matt Cassel can, should and will play better. That is expressing belief. I hope that this post and the information contained in it may give you reason to believe that Matt Cassel is doing exactly what he is being called on to do. Just as Tom Brady did 10 years ago.
Cassel has a ceiling just like any other player in the NFL. In order to get better you have to bump into that ceiling now and then. I think that is what you saw in the Colts game. In the same fashion, you will most likely see some games this year where Cassel looks very competant. The only way to get better is to eventually break through that ceiling by bumping up against it. Over and over and bloody over again. Last year was Cassel's turn at being held down by an underperforming offensive line. This year is Cassel finally learning what it means to truly lead a team that you have helped build from the ground up, just like Tom Brady did 10 years ago. That is what Haley means when he says he wants to see Cassel get mad. Cassel should get mad when another players lack of concentration keeps the team from achieving it's goal. After all, that goal is Cassel's too.
Believeing in Cassel breaking through that ceiling doesn't make me an apologist. Sometimes trying to support a theory is a difficult thing. I believe that Cassel will eventually break through that ceiling by bumping up against it--hard. It may take the rest of this year for that to really take hold. That belief is something I won't apologize for.

GREAT Read!
Aiken- I will admit that I thought the game plan would open up when needed, but after your thoughts above, I think the game plan is what we see.
I still see post season for our Chiefs!

Thank you,
for actually researching what you were writing. I am getting tired of reading every negative post and the subsequent bickering between sides that repeat the same three arguments. Why don’t we just focus on this next week, when we beat the Texans and continue to hold on 1st place in the west.
Whether the Royals win or lose, I can still drink.

Amen.....
FWIW I still don’t think Cassell is Brady. But I also think he is doing exactly what he is asked…….protect the football.
This team is going to lean on its defense to win games, and from the looks of it, the defense is going to be up to the task.
sure?
maybe cassel and brady have more in common that just that. look at the year brady went down (at the hands…. wait… who…?) and cassel stepped in. look at the stats cassel had as a starter that year. 327 of 516 for 3693 yards with 21tds and 11 int’s. 63.4% completion percentage and 7.2 yards per attempt. i dont know about you, but that sure sounds like brady to me. that was in the same exact system and with the same roster as brady. oh ya… he also rushed for 270 yards and 2 td’s that year…
You're not an apologist
you’re an enabler. It’s a good read as usual. But lets try to remember that 2001 Brady was in his first year as a starter and still managed to outperform the projections for Cassel. That 9% increase in completeion rate is not exactly insignificant.
We’re in Cassel’s 3rd year as a starter (2nd with the Chiefs). Hell, in Brady’s 2nd year as a starter he put up 1000 more yards and 12 more TDs than you project for Cassel.
Forgive me if I’m not impressed. It doesn’t look like Weis and Hoodie decided to hold back Brady’s stats to match some magical winner of a gameplan. It looks like our QB isn’t developing, so we’re still stuck in conservative playcalling land.
Nice list of excuses tho…well done.

Two points
1) Part of the point was that even with those numbers the Pats still won a SB. Cassel needs only to improve slightly to achieve those stats. Even with them, we have a chance.
2) I have seen your “Nice list of excuses tho…well done.” Comment on other posts. No list here, just the facts big boy. If Cassel and Bowe improve the rest of the way like the schedule suggests that they just might, those numbers could be better than Brady’s. This is a fluid thing right now. Thanks for the comment.

That's just a tag line I'm adding to all such posts
to highlight that we don’t need 5 posts like this each day. Yours is far better thought out than most.
The problem is you’re cherry picking the facts you like and ignoring those you don’t. Yes, the Pats won a SB playing D and limiting a 1st year QB. They also won 2 more by letting a QB with Cassel’s level of experience open up the O. This idea that many around here have that we’re limiting the playbook because that’s how the coaches want it is silly. We’re limiting the playbook because we have to. We have to because our QB simply isn’t very good.

Youre just saying he sucks.

The burden of proof is on you
The FACTS we have are that his numbers haven’t been good. Any set of numbers you want….overall comp %, yards, TDs, QB rating, 3rd down %, passes over 20 yards…40 yards….whatever…he’s lower 3rd of the league. How about you provide some evidence they will improve.

There is no evidence of what someone will do in the future
Would you agree with that statement? There is no way I can say anything that would be FACT as to whether Matt Cassel will improve or contine to suck. Otherwise I would be in Vegas right now.
What he is trying to do here is say that Tom Brady, in the same system as Matt Cassel, struggled in his first year, and improved in time.
There’s really no way to prove this. I dont know what the problem is. Maybe it’s Cassel, maybe its the WRs, maybe its playcalling. Could be a million things. All I know is Cassel had a very good year in NE, and would like him to do that again in KC.

Nope. Just looking at history to guess the future
Did he have a bad line at Alabama? And in high school? And this year in the preseason? I mean he’s ALREADY missed time THIS YEAR! And yes, I’m yelling at you now (not really).
Somehow, some way, Huard and Thiggy won games with those horrible, horrible players. Croyle never could.
I don’t get it. He gets hurt in HS, hurt in college, hurt on multiple occasions in the pro’s. Was it always, every time his O-line’s fault, including this year when he missed a couple of weeks in the preseason?

ok, so a freak hit his arm on somebody’s helmet this year … guess what, he still had a better preseason than Cassel … he still has a better arm, makes better and faster reads, looks to more than one guy if his primary is covered, has better pocket presence and … well, that’s a pretty decent list of “betters” … ya think?

But he played with the second squad.
How many preseason games did he play with the one’s? I’m not calling for Brodie, but if C.Weis is great with QB’s wouldn’t that mean Brodie is getting the same schoolin’. IMO Brodie would thrive with our offense right now, because he reads the defense better and gets rid of the ball quicker.
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
It also means...
Both Haley and Weis have seen Croyle every single day in practice, yet they seem to believe Cassel is their best option.
I wonder if the o-line believes that.
I haven’t seen one guy on our o-line even offer to help Cassel up after taking a sack.
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
While I don't think Croyle is a big enough improvement over Cassel to think he should start
If cassel is still faltering late in the season and we are clearly out of the playoff hunt then I would say but Cryole in and see what he can do then.

actually it seems resonably logical
just because the supporting cast is better does not mean he wont get hit, and any one hit can land a player an injury, especially one with brodie’s extensive history. true it improves his odds of not getting an injury, to say he won’t get an injury is spurious, deceptive, and illogical.
Seriously, when have I ever been sarcastic?
Leaf, I agree he has the injury history
… but he took some hits in that Ravens game last year and … oh yeah, survived the ordeal … so to say he’s going down with one hit is also spurious, deceptive and illogical … not to mention outright false
so, given that AND given the improvements in the overall makeup of the team OLine, etc etc etc) that should really be a non-issue by now

unfortunately
since he has such an extensive injury history, it will always be an issue. my point wasn’t to say it was only going to take one hit before he’s injured, more it takes only one hit to injure him. he’s going to take hits. it’s football, so it’s inevitable. because he’s been injured so much in the past, every time he takes a hit, there is the worry that he won’t get up.
Seriously, when have I ever been sarcastic?
OK, since Cassek has had a history of sucking as our QB, we should be prepared to suck as long as he's here, right.
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
Yes let's hope that.
Or maybe even 13-3 , so that when it comes down to winning a play-off game with the play of our QB we will fail again. Cassel is not good enough to take the team on his back and win a game on a consistent level. We need a franchise QB not a game manager.
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
I'd take that this year.
I agree that the Chiefs are going to need better QB play, from either Cassel or someone else, to be serious Super Bowl contenders, however.

but people seem to forget Croyle made it thru the Ravens game a year ago … and actually walked off the field on his own two feet
so much for “instantly injured” theory

That was in the past, damn I'm frickin tired of that excuse.
I’m judging Cassel performance now, not last year which sucked also. We don’t know what Brodie could do with this offensive unit “NOW”, CAN YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND WHAT FRICKIN “NOW” MEANS???
I’ll just use that same argument when I talk about Cassel.
BUT HE SUCKS!
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
well Cassel lost last yr to the Raiders
when Russel threw for 60 yrds…
I dont like how when Brodie loses its HIS fault. When he gets hurt its HIS fault. But with Cassel at the helm, the TEAM lost.
And for the record, since we are talking about injuries, Cassel was hurt last pre-season and Brodie started the first regular season game….
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
Yeah Cassel and the team.
Just like when Brodie looses it’s still him and the team. It’s the point Cassel has also won with the team.

That is the funny part
which causes folks to call each other names. People give Cassel all the credit for the wins and blame others for the losses. Yet every loss is on Croyle even though he played on a lousy team with a lousy coaching staff.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I'll say it again,
a fans’ favorite player is always the backup QB. Put him in, and then you will be begging for the next QB to be put in. They’re winning, and they’re exceding expectation for the year. Most fans on AP are sounding like Phily fans, always unhappy with the players they have, until they’re gone. It’s very rare that the backup QB is better than the starter.
Marcus Allen stuck it to the blAcK HoLe.

I'm happy with almost every player, except Cassel and Bowe.
I want a QB that can win games not manage them. If all Cassel is, is a game manager were screwed. We could have a great team right now if we had a good QB, instead we have a QB who has to be nursed along by the coaching staff. I’m tired of settling for a average QB, i want one that can come in a win games.
Disclaimer: Comments above are not meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
The burden of proof is this,
the Chiefs are 3 and 1. If we do this every quarter of the season, that’s a record of 12 and 4. Who here at AP at the begining of the year wouldn’t have been satisfied with that? Now obviously that could change over the course of the season but fact is 3-1 no matter what Cassel’s numbers are. So if we make the playoffs we should just give up because Cassel’s numbers weren’t what the fans “thought” they should be? The ONLY stat that counts is the W! One loss and the kingdom is burning down? Not every fourth team we play this year is a Peyton Manning led Colts team. Have faith Chiefs Nation. GO CHIEFS!!!!

He does suck
Will he get better? Who knows! Not u or I nor anyone else. But his play speaks for itself. And Bowe is not getting a pass for flopping two extremely catchable balls.
When crunch time is on the line Brady and his receivers made up for their errors when it counted. Bowe is unreliable at best!
Facing reality is not a bad thing. Cassel is NOT a rookie qb period. He has had the best mentor and coaching available. He will not be our qb in the future. We act as if we don’t want a better qb here in kc. Why is that?
They know we need better play at our qb and wr positions and they will fix it. Since we quoted Haley let’s quote Weiss who said " I’m going to fix the qb"
U don’t fix something that isn’t broken do u? U tell us to trust our coaches and I do. Weiss will fix the qb probably by replacing him at some point. And send bowe with him when he does.
The same pats u referenced parted ways with those receivers to bring in more talent and so will we.

When you buy a Jersey, eat at the stadium, buy the beer, the food, season tickets….it all goes to the Chiefs, and is used to operate the company and to pay player salaries. If I’m buying season tickets, I would be doing so to see the product that they field, using the money that I pay for tickets. That includes the QB.

Lack of surrounding talent is only an excuse for KC QB #7.
If someone asks you if you want extra mayonnaise you have to say yes, cus that's part of it.
-Jared Allen
Is it fair to compare a QB that's actually won games with that "lack of talent"
To a QB that never could.
Even Huard and Thigpen actually won a few games with those same teams. Brodie never did. He has, however, been injured to the point of missing games three four separate times in his short career.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
It’s fair if the sample size is 19 games, like Cassel’s. Again, I’m not saying Croyle should be the starter, but it seems like the only person that can use the excuse of not being surrounded by talent is Cassel.
If someone asks you if you want extra mayonnaise you have to say yes, cus that's part of it.

When we talk about Brodie we mean what he could do "NOW" not what he did in the past of what some other QB did with the team then.
Cassel sucks right “NOW” not last year but right “NOW”. I’m worried about our team now not about what happened in the past. You guys base your opinion off of the past when it comes to Brodie but expect great things from Cassel. With the players and the o-line we have “NOW” I think Brodie could be very effective, because he sees the field better, because he gets rid of the ball faster, and because he has better pocket awareness.

Umm the Chiefs are 3-1 right now.
You could say Cassel won the game against the 49ers but that’s it. The rest of the team saved his game managing ass in the other ones. Ever game we play this year where the QB has to win the game we will lose, because Cassel can’t do it. If you wanted to brake down the 4 wins last year I’m sure his ass was saved in them as well, like J.Charles running for 259 against the Broncos in week 17, Cassel didn’t win that game the team did.

Thanks for being willing to rumble with Satch on my behalf. I am willing to accept that I did not read his post 100% correctly and may have made some comments incorrectly on that mistake, but I still think it was clear what my point was in my original post and satch disagrees with it. Wrong
Tom Brady did not throw to his ONE and ONLY read.

I'm not backing off of anything here
You are the one that is saying that they are limiting the playbook and that Cassel sucks. I never said that Cassel was Tom Brady or any such nonsense. What I said was that he is doing what he has been asked to do and what future that brings to the Chiefs is still uncertain. I was trying to point out the similarities between what the QB in ’01 did vs what Cassel has done now. You are the one who is jumping to conclusions here. Maybe you should put your keyboard on hold a little while until what I have actually said sinks in.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
You're ignoring WHY he is being asked to do less than
Brady was at a similar point in their careers. You’re using semantics to avoid what you’re feeding us. You can call it “doing what he is asked” all you want. You’re an intelligent guy…you and I both know that he is being asked to not make the throws he isn’t capable opf making. Don’t make the decisions he isn’t capable of making. Don’t hurt the team since you aren’t capable of doing more harm than good.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

First of all
I don’t know that he is being asked not to make throws. This whole year seems to be a defensive minded plan. Maybe it is becasue Cassel can’t make the plays and maybe it is because they believe that he can given a differernt set of supporting cast members and maybe again it is just the damn way they decided to go after it.
Whatever the case, I was trying to point out that the CHIEFS are still in the thick of it and moving forward with a predetermined plan of action and not sitting around singing woe is me. THis coaching staff knows how to win football games with what they have. Don’t you think that Haley’s onsides kick was proof that they are willing to make the calls? I believe that Cassel can eventually do it, you don’t. Ok. It works for me. Just don’t put words in my mouth because you can’t see through your self induced hate fog concerning Cassel.

I don't think people are ignoring it
Just more optimistic than you that he can do better
I don't know what else to call it, I don't understand why you think that my opinion is that Cassel is playing well.
You are the one assuming that he is being asked not to make throws. I don’t know that to be true. You are assuming he is being asked not to make decisions that he is not capable of making.
As far as the debbie downers and trolls comments—I specifically addressed that in the post.
All of that is your opinion. I have never said that Cassel is currently playing well, but you seem to suggest that I have said that. All I am saying is that he can improve and I think that he will. We won’t know until he does or he doesn’t.

I got one..
Mark Bulger….go look at his stats before the Rams went to shit….very accurate, veteran, probowler….Riding the pine in Baltimore….a trade is possible
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
by KCinAZ on Oct 12, 2010 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I will only say one thing here
The 01 Pats started off the yr with Bledsoe…thats where their plans started…he got hurt, and Brady was thrown in there….they had to CHANGE plans for Brady…so, the BACKUP QB came in and played well and they went to the Super Bowl….not the original plan.
So, the blueprint that you think the Chiefs are trying to stick to does not really compare to the 01 Pats. Cassel has not been good in 3 out of 4 games this yr. And the game that he had decent stats in was against a team that is now 0-5…I dont see any improvement from last yr. This is basically the same offense as last yr and he has a whole training camp with Weis.
If we struggle to win, and lose a couple more games before we win a couple more, then I think the coaching staff has to go with Croyle. We have a shot at the playoffs this yr, with a very good defense. They will not continue to keep putting Cassel on the field with his lack of production. The coaches will not let the rest of the team, and the fans down, by NOT trying to improve the position.
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.

He is using the FACT that Tom Brady is good
and extrapolating it into the OPINOIN that Cassel will be good. He cleverly ignores that they are not comparable situations at all. He also ignores that Brady was far more accomplished with far less experience. He hides these FACTS as a mechanism to EXCUSE Cassel’s poor play.

But he wasn't good at that time
And neither is Cassel right now. That sounds like a comparable situation.
And if we’re going to talk about experience, why don’t we talk about Cassel’s season in NE where he had 3,600 yards in his first year as a starter.
Cassel is in his 3rd year of starting and 6th of his career.
When exactly will he be good. The comparison he makes is to Brady. Brady was damn good in his 2nd year of starting. I don’t expect Cassel to be Brady…none of us do. Which is precisely why the comparison is assinine. The fact that none of us believe he’ll become Brady is the best possible evidence that we should stop making excuses for the kid.
If we don’t think he’ll be a great QB, then why is nothing ever his fault? Isn’t it NATURAL that a QB none of us think will be great makes mistakes? And yet post after post, it’s the playcalling…it’s teh receivers…it’s the weather….it’s what Haley wants.
I know what it is….it’s bullshit.
He isn’t very good.

Well said
Its nice to smoke screen the fact that our QB sucks by comparing him to a young tom brady…but fact is, he sucks
If this is his third year, he has one good year and one bad year
The point of this post, I believe, is that he is saying the Chiefs are building the franchise in the same model that the Patriots did. The Patriots won a superbowl with a quarterback with subpar numbers who developed once the system was built.
The system is not built yet in KC. Pioli is still bringing in the players we wants to run the offense and defence. Therefore, it is likely to expect improvement from Cassel once he has a better cast around him.

There were many around who already knew about the erhardt perkins offense. I think I remember seeing the title of that post, but didn’t indulge (wanted to, but it was a busier stretch of time at work).
I know the “nobody here” comment is likely hyperbole. At least I hope it is, as you seem intelligent enough to know better.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
Of course it was hyperbole
I was asked to do that post because I happen to have knowledge in that area. It helped a lot of people understand the changes we were making.
My comment above is an indication of frustration that I have been called an idiot on this site by people who’s only knowledge of our Offense is from people like me.

Good lord
Do we really need a history lesson here? The Haley playbook…the Weis playbook….it’s the SAME PLAYBOOK. They learned it together while working for Parcells. It’s the same terminology…the same formations…the same fundamentals. It’s the same playbook used by the Pats, Cardinals, Steelers and Browns.

the problem with your argument is that you are fully equating stats to ability.
cassel has certain flaws that will limit or cripple this offense.
brady, on the other hand suffered through a season of adjustment from the college to NFL level.
This is Cassel’s third season, yet the comparison in numbers was to Brady’s first.
Not really going out on a huge limb here, but I'm guessing the same people who think Matt Cassel is the reincarnation of Joe Montana are the same confused people who think our President is a god amongst men with his high intellect and tremendous ability to lead....

I’m saying the Cassel drama would have never began because he would have never put on a Chief uniform. I’m not saying I regret it either.
And he’s not gonna prove me wrong, because I have belief in him. I have never “hated” Cassel or been on the Cassel hating side. I’ve always been in the middle or supported Cassel. So don’t say he’s gonna prove me wrong and act like I’m on the hater side.

Cassel
Great write up. I thought Cassel played fairly well against the colts. His first half numbers were solid. My main thing is that he’s not turning the ball over. And that’s important. Once he starts doing that then I’ll be really worried. He’ll learn eventually not to stare down receivers as much. Atleast I hope he will. And he’ll go threw his progressions better and find an open target. Again great read.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
you guys act like Cassel is a rookie
this is his 6th yr in the league and 3rd as a starter….he should KNOW not to stare down receivers by now….he should know how to go through his progressions. He should be more accurate. He should NOT have such happy feet…
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
rookie
look I dislike Cassel, I think he’s over paid and unproven. when Chiefs brought him in i hated the move, cuz imo Thigpen put up just about the same numbers with an inferior line and imo Patriots had one of the best O-lines out there. Cassel lead the NFL in sacks that year, clearly showing he held on to the ball to much. and since Thigpen matched Cassel’s numbers somewhat minus 2 TD’s, I felt that Thigpen could have developed even more givin the oportunity. but i guess his winning record didnt help.
Its plain and simple Cassel isnt making mistakes so thats most important. Do i think he should be playing better? yes i think we’d all like him to play better. but he’s not, and since he’s not we can give him credit in not making mistakes and turning the ball over all the time.
We need to draft Eric Berry, no if's / and's or buts about it!!!!
best part is
the team hasnt reached its ceiling…our best players arent there yet either…Cassel might very well be….but our young stars? they will only get better…
interesting read, always like a positive write up

but ;et’s be honest here, this is STILL wrong, you’re wrong, Cassel’s wrong for this team and he’s not producing … it really IS just that simple … you (and everyone else with a pulse) know where I stand, and I’m with Satch on this one
sure we can look at the Pats of 2001 and the Chiefs of 2010, but the truth of the matter is …

I blame the short kick.
This wouldn’t be the first time that the coaches knew what they were talking about better than the fans either. Examples? Dorsey and TJax were not busts after all were they? Pioli’s 2010 draft class was not a mistake was it?
The same people that are tired of treating Cassel like he can do no wrong are not the same people who said Dorsey and Jackson were busts. I’ve posted countless comments supporting both Dorsey and Jackson. To the same point, the same people who said the draft class was a mistake aren’t necessarily the same either.
Apologists? Anytime someone expresses a belief in an as yet unsubstantiated players ability in a positive fashion it doesn’t mean that person is an apologist. To apologize is to acknowledge faults or shortcomings.
That is the definition of “apologizing.” An “apologist” is
a person who makes a defense in speech or writing of a belief, idea, etc.Link

Greatest lyrics ever:
Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer’s day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.
Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.
Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning field of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand.
Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.
For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.
Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget.
Like the strangers that you’ve met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.
Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they’re not listening still.
Perhaps they never will…

I never accused you of dishonesty
I accused you of diverting a discussion about Cassel’s performance into irrelevant tangents.
It’s a great tactic. I use it myself sometimes. Just pointless for you and I to go that route when we could have had a real discussion about our QBs performance.

Honestly
THis post was about the fact that we can still go far with Cassel as our QB, regardless of how good or bad he is performing.

I beleive you
and I happen to agree that we can go pretty far. I think if you reread your post from a slightly different prespective, You’ll be able to see how many of your statements can be interpreted thinking Cassel will develop like Brady did. Not that he’ll be as good…but that this is just natural development for a QB with this set of characters around him.
While it’s possible that Cassel will develop, he is trending in the opposite direction than Brady did.

I don’t like what I see with Cassel right now. He looks jerky and unsure of himself and his receivers. I wanna grab him and say “Throw the fucking ball Matt, Throw the fucking ball!”. ala Haley.

Isn’t it just possible that Cassel is doing what he is expected to do?
No QB is supposed to have a 54.7% completion rating.

How about another extrapolation. Guess who it is.
In first season as a starter started 9 games. If you extrapolate to a full season his rookie season would look like this.
56.7% completion rate
2160 yards
11TD
11 INT
69.9 passer rating
I will give you a hint. His O-line and surrounding talent was far inferior to Cassel or Brady’s.
I think that is it.

I don't think Croyle is the long term answer.
But using a comparison of Brady’s numbers to Cassel’s is a bit of a leap.
Can we look at Cassel's numbers in NE?
Or do those count?
Fair enough
I just don’t see where we would have done that last year, such as the draft or free agency. I liked the defense focus we used last draft.
I don't have a huge problem with giving Cassel a shot.
I have no issue with the trade or the money other than the fact I sure hope that if management feels Cassel is not good enough and can improve the position early in the draft they do not because of the money given to Cassel.
Why would they concern themselves with the money he's due?
He just gets cheaper every year the way his contract is structured. It’ll just keep getting easier to cut him.
Our front office is better than that.

well there's a reason he never won any games
bad decision maker
i felt just as comfortable with Thigpen's decision making
the only difference between Thiggie Smallz throwing the ball and Croyle was the arm strength. but of course in the midst of a terrible 3-1 start no one here can remember that
Thigpen's...
decision making was throw the ball to Gonzolaz. Maybe we need to find a way to merge people. Get Thigpen’s mobility, Croyle’s arm, and Cassel’s durability. That would be sweet.

yeah, after I posted that
I wondered how many of those TDs Croyle threw to TG. Then I wondered how many TDs Cassel would have with TG. Then I wondered what this coaching staff would do with TG. Then I wondered how much better Bowe would look with these coaches AND TG.
Not even the perpetual negative nancies can diminish my last daydream.

That's easily the most dignity I've seen by any constant Cassel detractor
And I applaud you.
There are things with the Chiefs that I’m not really happy with yet (but many more that I am), and I can express the things, or criticize them if you will, without throwing a tantrum. There are a great many commentors at AP that can’t seem to muster up a little dignity when they think something should change. ((For the record, I really hope Cassel can become what we all want him to be. If somebody who can clearly do the job better comes along, then great for all of us)).
But kicking, screaming, pounding fists on the floor like spoiled children is getting kind of old. Nobody is blown away with Cassel’s performance, or Bowe’s, or Chambers’ disappearing act. But starting ridiculous forum-wars and the whole “you’re with us or you’re against us!” mentality needs to go.
I’m a Cassel supporter insofar as he’s our starting QB, so I want him to kick the crap out of the opposition. I certainly want him to play better than he has been. If someone else becomes the starting QB, then I’m a staunch supporter of whoever that is and want them to be the guy to manhandle opposing defenses.
I just can’t wrap my head around this whole partisan mentality.
Short story made way too long – well said, Mushin.

But the puppy just fumbled out of his hands
To posters who are negative about Cassel I have a question
What do you all suppose we do? Who could we pick up that is going to be an upgrade to Cassel? We can’t draft anyone right now, and even if we could, that person would most likely have to take some time to develop. What do you have in mind?

my point exactly
the best scenario I can think of…
Cassel finishes the year, KC drafts a future star QB
Cassel starts 2011, rookie QB has time to develop
It's all about the gameplan
I agree with this
But there is nothing wrong with pointing out that he isn’t playing well and that we are concerned about it.
The best scenario would be that I am wrong about him and he turns in to a great QB fr the Chiefs.

Another fact ignored by those who like Croyle.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Huard was a veteran with a lot more knowledge than a young second yr QB(Croyle)
and that same O Line got Huard hurt and out for the rest of the season too……and they had to change the entire offense for Thiggy…he was running a college scheme in order to move the ball. He basically had a run first, throw second mentality that coaching staff took advantage of. He could not run a pro style offense, was not good under center
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.

Haley said something in the most recent press conference with what you are both talking about, which was something about not whitewashing things or being ok with failure when talking about Bowe or Cassell, but that Cassell really was doing what was asked of him. I trust Haley with this., that he is doing what they want him to do. What confuses me about it is that he isn’t hardly doing anything, or whats necessary as far as keepiing the D honest…..I agree that something is very wrong with the passing game and that Cassell can’t seem to be trusted throwing it down the field. I feel like I am missing something though because Haley is ok with where things are at. I trust that guy. But am confused with him right now. So I think there is something I am missing but strangely, I feel a sense of trust that Haley has got this. Reality tells me that Cassell is dangerous throwing downfield though. Hmmmm nevermind……
I translate it as coachspeak for "we don't trust Cassel so we're limiting him to as little as possible"
and if you limit your QB then you limit your entire offense, by definition … and that limits your team, again by definition
we are very, very limited – at best – with Cassel at QB

I don’t think that this is coach speak unless it is about the distinct lack of quality at the WR position. I think that these coaches believe in Cassel. I am not so sure about the WRs.

To a running team a blocking WR is gold
How many targets do the WR’s get combined maybe 8 per game. The RB’s get just as many.

Ahhhhh
THanks Satch. You have just given me some more to think about with the KC fan base. I have been thinking about this for some time. Many long time fans seem to be the hardest nuts to crack when it comes to giving players mulligans. I have thought for some time that it is because they feel that they have had the wool pulled over their eyes for years and years by the front office of the Chiefs. Just remember that King Carl is gone and the new blood in the form of Clark Hunt wants to make his own name. He is willing to spend the money and take the advice from Pioli. That sounds like a solid way to go to me. Time will tell of course.

But yes, many of us have seen this movie before. It’s not so much that we’re afraid of the wool. But when you see so many of the same tendencies from current players that you remember from former players, it’s disturbing. When I look at T Jax, it’s hard not to remember Art Still. When I look at JC, it’s hard not to remember Joe D. When I look at Flowers, it’s hard not to think of Ross.
When I look at Cassel, it’s hard not to think of Fuller. The guy was on skates in the pocket. Fear is the hardest thing for a QB to conquer. It’s broken more talented QBs than Cassel. It is very rarely overcome. I see fear when I look at Matt.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.

Mistakes are the result
the fear is that he can’t be what people want him to be….great. The kid puts way too much pressure on himself.
I can really only remember 1 guy overcoming that…and you have to go way way back….Jim Plunkett

My take...
Is that he’s afraid of throwing an INT. Sometimes you have to take those chances to make plays.
I think he's being coached that way.
Haley seems to stress no turnovers more than most coaches. He doesn’t believe the team is good enough to overcome them, and he’s probably right, for the most part.
This is certainly true
but why is the team not good enough to overcome it? It’s not the D….it’s not the running game….it’s not the pass protection….
hmmm…..

Exactly this
It’s like oversteering when your tires slip off of one side of the road – you overcorrect and careen off the other side.
The Chiefs were so bad the last three years prior, I think Cassel has been beat over the head with “No matter what, never turn over the ball. We can’t afford it. Never ever EVER.”
Hopefully we can stop overcorrecting at some point and let things flow a little more. Once the training wheels come off, hopefully we’ll be able to move the ball with some consistency and confidence.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
And in his defense.
When he does take that chance and throw the ball up in the end zone, can he trust someone to come down with it?
by Chiefs_40 on Oct 12, 2010 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Yeah, that's the other half of the training wheels.
Some great receivers made Cassel look good in NE. We certainly don’t have that here.
Hell, Manning’s receivers bailed him out several times against us this past weekend. Several very impressive catches were made. Manning can shoot it in there with faith that his guys can reasonably make the play.
We don’t have that luxury (or rhythm, or timing) yet. I’m hoping that comes with time and experience (collectively) in the new / revamped system.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
I will buy
the observation that Cassel appears to put a lot of pressure on himself to possibly be something he is not, be like something he is not.
And I agree that that pressure is crippling.

You see.
I think this is the part that some folks don’t realize. Saying you want him to succeed changes everything. I just think there is a lot of misunderstanding on both sides.
Well, there are some posters (not Satch)
Who just seem to want Cassel to fail, regardless of the cost to the Chiefs and how it might set us back as a team.
Some kind of juvenile “toldyaso” mentality, and it drives me nuts.
Cassel is our starting QB, so more than anything – I want the guy to kick ass and not even bother taking names.

Look at Manning. Manning isn’t scared of shit. But he won’t do something stupid just because he knows it might work if he makes the perfect pass. He uses his confidence to outsmart the D. Fascinating
I will probably say some things you won’t like about Carl, but I believe that he was doing what he thought was right. What is your solution to Cassel’s problem? I wonder if this is what Charlie was referring to when he said something about fixing the QB. Jim Plunkett was a success story like very few. My grandmother was a die hard Chiefs fan, but she thought the world of Jim Plunkett.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
1st a note about Carl
Those bad years at the end…the ones people hate him for….he did it all for Lamar. He made decisions that he knew weren’t in the long term best interest of the team in hopes of cacthing lightning in a bottle to win one before we lost him. We all knew Lamar was in failing health. If more people knew this, they might view Carl differently.
You have to draft a guy. Cassel is our QB this year and more than likely next. If he learns to overcome his flaws between now and then, great. But you can’t hide him from competition. Free Agency is so rarely the answer at QB. THis is why I was livid when we didn’t go after Brees. Even tho most teams wouldn’t touch him, I believed that he would be great. Not that I haven’t been wrong about a QB before (I’m looking at you Akili Smith) but it just seemed obvious to me.
There will be no Brees out there this year….or next…so you have to draft a guy who can either push Cassel or push him aside.

Jeez
Hadn’t thought about akili smith in some time. I agree, the draft is also a very difficult place to make the right choice. Cassel was a good choice for where we were and are. If I could, I would make him the next Joe Montana. Joe was the MAN. The day I heard he was coming to the Chiefs I nearly cried. If that was done for Lamar, I got the residuals. I loved watching Joe play in Chiefs uni.

You were around for that? I just really think that Haley is not going to settle for garbage. He seems to be able to identify a problem and to be unwilling to just accept failure. My initial feelings , are that Brodie is more accurrate, quicker with release, younger with more upside, and just more solid all together. However my trust for Haley won’t let me believe that he just all out sucks. I feel like Brodie is the real deal, and almost anyone but thiggy would have had their arms and legs ripped off of them behind Damien McIntosh.

That he has never had a chance to prove himself. He was as a rookie put behind the worst O-Line in football….and without a doubt it was….we were last in YPC and worst in sacks allowed. However I don’t think it in necessarily Brodie’s fault, when multiple D- lineman are allowed unimpeded into the backfield bad things are going to happen. Brodie hasn’t been given a shot. Plus he has a heart to do it. I want him to get his shot. Who knows he may be the next Tom Brady……Cassell sure isn’t but once again, I will trust Haley on this one.
The gist of your point is correct
yet who knows what is just being put out for NFL consumption.
The Chiefs played a very vanilla game (sans the trickery) vs the Colts. 3 blitzes combined on Sunday. SOmetimes when you have the edge in a long game you don’t show all your cards.
The Chiefs seem to be in a good position to play these guys again and we maybe just wanted to see what the base plan could do against them. We did pretty good :)

When is the right time to switch to your back up quarterback?
A question many teams have faced time and time again when their starter just hasn’t been living up to expectations. A popular saying in pittsburgh was that the backup qb is the most popular guy in town. Fans have so much emotion and expectation built into their teams that they will usually jump the gun before a coaching staff. And hey, we’re not ACTUALLY making the decisions, so it’s not like we have to answer for any of our crazy positions.
But its the job of the coaches and the administration to keep their shit together and I think that’s what their doing. Has Cassel been disappointing? Yes. Barring some crazy spectacular turn around should we be looking at other options in trade or draft? Absolutely. But should we switch to Brodie 4 games into the season? No. We are 3-1. We are winning our division. Cassel isn’t losing games. The offense is still trying to gel together.
Now if we go on a few game losing streak with bad QB play then sure, throw Brodie a bone.
Side note that I do find funny and maybe some of you Brodie fans can explain to me. You all hammer on Cassel nonstop for his numbers…the “facts”. That is completely fair and deserving. But why is it that Brodie’s career numbers never come up when you go on these rants? I just don’t understand why some of you are so passionate about putting a new quarterback behind center when the team as a whole is playing some good football.

here's one for ya ...
you said:
Cassel isn’t losing games
well, suppose he hit an open guy on that early 4th and 2 … would that have won the game? (in hindsight, I know)
if that MIGHT have been a game winning play right there … then yeah, I think we could say he’s losing games for us
at least be open to the possibility

and I'm open to every possibility.
Which is why I’m open to the idea of Croyle getting a shot if Cassel starts throwing multiple picks per game and we have a string of losses. But right now is not a time to shake up the entire offense when they are already subpar. Stay on the path for now and have our fingers crossed that cassel will improve.
I mean I know you guys surely aren’t rooting AGAINST our quarterback…right? Yeah we lost to Indy. Still the chiefs team that has been garbage over the last few years is 3-1, leading the division, turned their defense around, and is showing promise in all areas. In their second year.
Turns out these guys MIGHT know what they are doing.

I really thought Brodie was all around more solid with more upswing, but for once, we have a head coach I trust. But really Cassell is kind of stinking it up around here.
Please STOP!
I beg you guys to stop saying that Cassel isn’t losing us games. The guy is bottom 5 in almost every single QB statistic. And please don’t give me the total interceptions because he’s played 1 less game than almost everyone else and this past game was the only game he hasn’t thrown a pic.
People are acting like turnovers are the only way to lose a game. How about going 1-10 on 3rd downs or throwing something like 7 or 8 straight incompletions? What about throwing into quadruple coverage on 4th down while staring down your receiver the entire time?
I’m not demanding Cassel to be a world class QB but the excuses sometimes annoy me.
Outstanding post Aiken
Similar to what I was calling for on another fanpost earlier.
Here’s the huge unanswered question: Did Cassel do what the Coaches asked him to do??? Haley says, "Yes!" We’ll probably never know the details of the full answer to the follow-up question "How?"
If you want to argue he didn’t throw enough, then you have to blame Weiss. Don’t blame the passer.
Was he accurate enough? You can only try to make that argument going through the tape pass play by pass play. So far I haven’t seen a post analyzing the passing game noting the mistakes he made and showing where he made good decisions and plays. Until someone does, and until someone proves that he deserves the kind of ridicule he’s getting, then I’m going to have to agree with Haley who said that mistakes were made teamwide. This was a team loss and nothing more.
Anyway, thanks Aiken for saying so well at least some of what I have been thinking and feeling.
[The Kansas City Chiefs] are now a team that knows how to win. The power that was unleashed in that last stand (Chargers wk 1) is a rare thing. Teams spend tons of money in search of it, but it can only be found in the collective conciousness created by team builders.

Joe got traded to us on a Friday. A few folks knew this was coming down ahead of time…including my mom. If you are new enough that you don’t know about my mom…well…lets just say she has the inside skinny on Chiefs shit. Anyhow, she lets me know it’s a done deal and Joe will be in town later in the day.
I didn’t think much else about it, but that night I went to WEstport with a bunch of ppl. For you non-KC folks, Westport is the bar district. We go to this place called Stanford and Sons. It’s packed, but we manage to get a table right by the front window. At some point I wind up sitting at this huge table talking to this ugly chick while all my friends are off doing whatever.
I don’t want to look at this chick so I’m staring out the window…up teh street comes this huge mob of ppl. I’m like “wtf is that all about”? The mob gets closer and closer then turns and heads in to Stanfords. It was Joe’s entourage with Joe right in the middle. You can’t even move..ppl everywhere. Then my table starts to shake and I realize someone was climbing on the ground under it. The right next to me pops up…you guessed it…Joe Freaking Montana.
His boys push everyone out of the way and now I’m sitting there with Joe, 3 of his guys…and the ugly chick. I shake his hand…welcome him to town…all that kind of shit….people are yelling shit at him…he’s half drunk an just laughing non-stop. The table fills up with pitchers of beer ppl bought for Joe.
After about 20 minutes he looks at me and asks where they should go next. I direct him to Kelly’s and off he and his crew go. Leaving me and the ugly chick with like 15 pitchers of free beer and a great story.

comparing matt cassel
with tom brady is alittle much . tom brady showed improvement in his accuracy , ability to throw deep, pump faking moving his head and eyes to move people and disturbing the ball to all his targets never giving the defense a chance to jump any route . matt cassel does not sometimes he does which gives me hope for improvement and there is a chance he could get better but right now he is not good. he regresses from games in KC to games on the road. he looks at times jittery like he has spiders crawling up his legs and sometimes has radar lock on where he wants to go with the ball making it easy to defend. teams will tee off on our running game all year if he doesn’t improve on his QB mechanics and deception .
Ok...but I'm still looking for a play by play...not general unsubstantiated statements

I still stand by this comment.
So many are willing to say that Cassel will improve under Weis because that’s what Weis does. He fixes Qb’s.
I agree he does. So why aren’t we willing to think that Brodie could be a better QB under Weis. We all know Croyle has a more accurate arm and better pocket presence. I think he could be a better stop gap until next season than Cassel.
I don’t hate Cassel. He just isn’t a good QB. And we are so close to being elite right now. SO close. We need our receiving corp and our QB play upgraded and that isn’t going to happen with Cassel and Bowe.
This isn’t new news on Bowe. Its just more of the same ol’ same ol’ from Mr. Drops a Lot. He has issues on the field and we can’t count on him in big game situations. He’s like Cassel, he is far too inconsistent.
If we have so much faith in Weis then I say lets bring on Brodie and see what Weis can do with him. He certainly can’t do any worse.
The one thing I’ve seen Cassel do well this year is kneel down at the end of a game. He’s an excellent kneeler. We should try more kneeling plays like the one at the end of the Cleveland game. He knelt down like a pro. I doubt Manning could have done a better job of taking a knee than Cassel.
I love his kneeling technique.
And if the Cassel people that say
well he is our guy this year if he sucks or not. We can’t do anything about it… Well shouldn’t we see if Croyle is worth keeping around?

Cassel is a good kneeler and you call for Brodie? And I respectfully disagree that Brodie is more accurate.
"If ifs mattered, everyone would be undefeated." Enite
Cassel is a good QB
Not great, but good. I disagree with your opinion, kray.
Good post and appreciate your passion.
A few holes in logic, though. First, Brady only started 14 games that season. Take 2797 yards in 14 starts, that’s 200 yards per game. That amounts to about 3,200 yards for a 16-game season which is more than respectable (21 TDs, 13 INTs). Cassel is on pace to throw for 2,600 yards, 16 TDs / 12 INTs. So Brady, who had no NFL experience, would have thrown for 600 more yards, had 5 more TDs, and only one more INT. Not to mention that Brady got better every single season he played.
As for the comment about breaking down his good plays vs. bad plays, there is no official breakdown. I don’t know if anyone has documented that and I would love to, if I actually had the time. But I can assure you that if you break out the tape, you’ll find several recurring themes: 1) even to open receivers, he doesn’t consistently put the ball in a catchable spot; 2) if you freeze frame a tape, you will often see him staring down a receiver while another receiver on the opposite side is wide open; 3) if you watch his pocket presence, you will often see him miss a seam in the pocket to slide up in or see him tuck the ball under when all he has to do is slide out—if you’ll recall in Indy, there was one pass where he threw on the run and threw the ball 10 yards short because he didn’t have the pocket recognition to realize that the guy chasing him fell down and he had about 10 yards of real estate (just plant your foot and step into the throw).
You don’t need statistical breakdowns to see what people are seeing with their eyes. You can’t compare him to Brady because in Brady’s rookie season, he was very accurate on the horizontal game which Cassel is not, he was unbelievably clutch when the team asked him to be.
Thanks Jon
I must say that your technical eval is good. My issue with it is exactly what you are saying about what people are seeing with their eyes. I have been watching Cassel since that season he took over in NE. Yes he needs tech assistance. Isn’t that what Charlie is for? I believe that he is currently a work in progress. Many of the things that he is doing wrong are coachable things. Charlie must see the same things you do. All that is missing is a body of work to show Cassel. These games are now providing that canvass. I look for marked improvement at exactly the perfect time, the second half of our season when we have the most favorable schedule we could get. Cassel has two games of over 400 yds. He was playing instinctive. Now they are showing him what it is that he was doing and he is thinking about it too much. Eventually, he will revert to that instinctive motion and the understanding will come. Look out for when that happens.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
Aiken ... yeah. you'd think huh
Yes he needs tech assistance. Isn’t that what Charlie is for?
but here’s the deal in my mind: all the stuff Jon just laid out so eloquently has been going on since Cassel got here … now, a year ago it might have been “excusable” with the new coaches, new system, lousy RB (2.7), lousy WRs, lousy OLine, new system, etc … but he’s had plenty of time with it all, has a better everything, and has been working with Charlie “The Guru” Weis since Jan and still looks less like a “work in progress” and more like the Charlie Brown QB we saw in last year’s home game with Oakland
with everything Cassel has surrounding him and he STILL looks like a train wreck waiting to happen is … well, disheartening at best, and downright scary at worst
like you and Satch and many others, I like Cassel … great work ethic, strong guy, nice guy, salt of the earth and fits into the Pioli mold (wouldn’t say sh*t if he had a mouthful … now THAT’S a Pioli type of guy!)
but liking a guy and wanting him as the Chiefs QB are two different things, and one has noting to do with the other … I want the Chiefs QB to be able to pass downfield, to be able to read defenses, to be able to look off his intended WR if the guy is covered and go to his second or third guy, whoever’s open … I want him to be able to recognize a play that’s available even if it wasn’t planned or called (oh look, my FB is wide open, that’s a TD, here’s the ball Mr FB) … liking Cassel isn’t getting that done, and that’s my gripe about the guy
he’s had plenty of time to evolve, to learn, to adjust, to grow, to develop … and we’ve seen pretty much none of it happen … so yeah, Charlie’s reigning him in, keeping him under wraps, designing an offense built on the run and very few passes by design … which limits the offense and what they can do, and how much they can score … and that limits the team in wins
to say or pretend otherwise is to disregard the facts … and I know you’d never do that, I respect you too much to think you ever would

excellent point Aiken
reminds me of a few Chiefs D-lineman and Linebackers that now play instictively.
I sure hope the light comes on sooner rather than later.

Does anyone else agree with me that Cassel seemed to be playing significantly better the second half of last season than he has so far this season?
He just looks a lot less comefortable this year. I don’t know if it’s a real regression, or if he’s just in a transitional stage of learning the tweaked offense & the new mechanics that Weis is supposedly teaching him. I guess the remainder of this year will tell us.
Predictions:
This year IS be better.
oh, and...
Todd Haley doesn't give a damn about your fantasy team.
he had the whole offseason, mini camps, training camp, and 4 games to learn the TWEAKS
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
THat is true.
A whole four months of playing against his own defense who won’t hit him and 4 meaningless games designed to see how the TEAM is working together. How many times did we actually run our defense during the preseason? Most here said we didn’t because we didn’t want to show our hand. Which is it? You go from being a backup QB that needs tech training to being Joe Montana in six weeks.

no...but this is his 3rd yr as a starter

Someone just tell me this....
i really want to know. And this is a different angle for Cassel supporters.
What does Cassel do well? What has he shown you that makes you think he can be any good? How much longer does a 6th yr player get to “develop”.
Hell, Jamarcus Russel was a #1 pick and even he didnt get 6 yrs
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
Oh let's start with back to back 400 yard passing games shall we?

that was 3 yrs ago, on a loaded team
and he has never ever done it since….not even close…If the guy was a consistant Qb, i wouldnt bash him. He does nothing well…except keep from throwing INTS..
Thats not enough…and the longer the season goes on, the more teams will test him and know how to play us..
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
He does nothing well…except keep from throwing INTS..
Then he does something well…
He also is much better at avoiding sacks this season. In fact, I think part of his problem is he is SO afraid to take a sack (one of those negative plays that killed us last season), that he has thrown away several balls too early.
He still needs to find the middle ground between forcing a pass when he shouldn’t and throwing it away before he needs to.

HE is not avoiding sacks...
the O Line is keeping guys off of him and giving him time to throw….and he still has not been good.
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.
This year he isn't throwing picks.
I really think that they haven’t fully opened the playbook for him yet. I think they are preaching teamwide to avoid turnovers, and because of that he isn’t taking a lot of chances. Lower risk = lower reward, but I truly think that the coaching staff is playing very conservative because they want to win on defense and a good running game, which means they want him and are asking him to be a game manager, not Drew Brees and Peyton Manning.

Well said.
I can see it in many of his throws. If it’s not there, he throws it in the dirt, or wide. or etc. He still needs improvement no doubt. He’s playing the way they want him to play.
they WANT him to play that way? really? he does this when he's trying to complete passes ... they WANT that from the QB?
he throws it in the dirt, or wide. or etc
color me shocked as hell!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
yeah, fewer picks and fewer passes ... kind of goes hand in hand
oh, and fewer TDs thrown … did you notice that as well?
he’s not even being asked to be a “game manager” … to me a “manager” makes decisions, and Cassel is NOT making decisions, certainly not when given options like “throw it to WR A or WR B?” and forget about “RB C” because he can’t think that far down the list … manager? of what, handing the ball off to TJ and Jamaal?

Cassel is not this team's problem...
the problem is Dustin Colquitt. This guy is nothing but a liability to this team. Where the hell was Dustin when the team was down 2 scores with time running out? He was sipping a gatorade martini while trying to chat the panties off of a colts cheerleader. The dude lacks the team mentality as well as focus. The Chiefs need to cut ties with Dustin and give Succop a chance to be the franchise punter.
Left Tackle is Brandon Albert's natural position.
Here's a bit of fuel to keep the fire burning
From Jamey Eisenberg, Senior Fantasy Writer for CBS sports:
Matt Cassel, Kansas City
Owned: 54 percent of leagues
Week 5: Completed 16 of 29 passes for 156 yards at Indianapolis.
Analysis: Cassel has just one good game this season in Week 3 against the 49ers, but he has a great matchup in Week 6 at Houston if you’re willing to trust him. The Texans have allowed two 425-yard passing games and four games with multiple touchdown passes, and that includes matchups with No. 2 quarterbacks like McNabb, Bruce Gradkowski and Eli Manning. Cassel, like Henne, can be considered a sleeper this week.
I woud guess that Eisneberg doesn’t necessarily agree with the assessment that Cassel can’t get the job done.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Aiken! I love you man!!!!!!!!
No, I’m not gay and I have no romantic inclinations, but you were able to write so elequently what I wanted to say yesterday, without being the asshole I was. I was angry at those who overreacted to the loss, and were doing the “I told you so”, about Todd Haley and Matt Cassell. No matter how much success our team has, there will be those who would rather be proven right, than to acknowledge we are a 3-1 football team.
I have no problem with constructive criticism. That is what these boards are for. Hell, I have expressed concern about teams loading up to stop the run, and our need to be more balanced. I have not, however, bashed our coaches or QB, but more questioned how they would address the issue, if need be. I have enough evidence, to be confident that our coaches are very much aware that we need a balanced offense. They would not still be coaching in the NFL, if they didn’t know that.
There is an obvious double standard displayed by the media, and some of the fans on here, and other sites. If Pittsburg won a game in an “ugly” fashion, they would be considered a great team, as “they found a way to win.” That is what championship teams do. However, if it is an overachieving team like the Chiefs, they are benefitting from a soft schedule! I wrote the statement that John Clayton made, about the Chief’’s opponents having a 2-9 combined record (I believe it was), after the 49er game. Well, 3 of those losses came from the Chiefs! It was one of the dumbest comments I have ever read! And thay call this guy “The Professor”?
Chris Carter calls Cassell a “highschool quarterback.” Well, he worked out with Bowe and Larry Fitzgerald, during the offseason, and predicted a breakout year for Bowe. I’m sure he doen’t want to be proven wrong, so he directs his anger at Cassell, not the guy who is continually dropping passes. Our passing game is getting ripped to hell, by the sports media, and it is being discussed as being our ultimate downfall. Well, Kyle Orton and Phillip Rivers are continually passing for 350-400 yards, and seem to be on teams with 2-3 records. As Bill Parcells always says about his team’s record, regardless of their performance, “it is what it is.” Well, “it is what it is”, and I’m going to enjoy the ride, bud!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Racy - our record, for the record
actually, our opponents record, for the record
Ind 3-2
SD 2-3
Cle 1-4
SF 0-5
that adds up to 6-14, not a very good combined record, eh? taking away our record against those teams you end up with 5-11 combined against all other teams besides the Chiefs
if that doesn’t qualify as “soft” then could you explain to me what does?

How many of those teams did we beat last year? One more in the bank and we have already tied last years total. The truth is you can always find good and bad to talk about, it just depends on which side of the room you want to stand on.

what's wrong with hanging from the ceiling? I happen to LIKE it up here!
and yes, the TEAM is vastly improved, and for that I’m thankful and appreciative, Aiken … as I’ve said before, they’re better than I’d dared hope for, at least defensively (and all I can say about Romeo & The Gang is HOLY WOW these guys ROCK!)
that said, is it such a horrible thing that I’d love to see the team be even better than they are now? I hope not … because if that’s a bad thing, then a whole lotta people need to stop drinking Koolaid, and if THAT happens poor Porkchop will be standing in the unemployment line with me
and you don’t want THAT to happen, do you? :-)

No it's a great thing that you want the team to be better!
So do I. We just disagree on how the best way to do that is. It’s all good UPS. I understand your point and to a small degree, I agree with you that Brodie’s most recent start as a chief was more impressive than any I can remember. The problem for me is that what I saw Cassel do in NE was more impressive than anything that Brodie has ever come close to. That’s it in a nutshell for me. Hey, if Cassel gets the snot knocked out of him there are worse backups than Brodie Croyle.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
Aiken, I'll redily admit that Cassel's time (for one year) with the Patriots was better than anything Croyle has done (to date)
but this isn’t New England and these aren’t the Patriots … this is Kansas City and these are the Chiefs …
moreover, this is a vastly different Chiefs team than anything Croyle’s been on before, so I think points about what he’s done in the past are also invalid
bringing us to right this very second … yup, we do agree that we want the Cheifs to be the best team possible (hell, we want the best team EVER!) and yeah, we disagree on how best to accomplish it … and I do NOT want Cassel injured, I want to see him holding the clipboard under his own power (angelic smile)
and to think I just "defended" you on Cheiftan's post ... never again

Guess that cup IS at least HALF -FULL.
Nice story. If I were a movie critic, I would say " a real Tour de force", a real “feel good” story. No need for rose colored glasses if there still is some " bloom" on the rose.
A refreshing slap in the face of pagmatic " truthyness". I love it when facts are used to back up opinion. However Pats vs Chief comparisons get a little thin at times.
Cassel is still a little shy of Brady numbers from “01” plus this is Cassel year #2 vs Brady Year #1 as Starter. And, lets not get on any Bowe comparison ( Most drops in League and counting) All other benchmarks are very encouraging when looked at realisticaly. (DMAC, Charles, Moeaki, impoving OL, etc, and Defense is perhaps better than 01 Pats with at least as much potential. Lots of reason to cheer on the Red and Gold.
The roadmap has a drop off location for Cassel
I have no doubt that the Chiefs will draft a QB, not guaranteeing he will start right off, but Cassel gets dropped off after this season.

I don’t know about the Brady status either, but I think that Matt has already shown that he served more than adequately as Tom’s backup. I know that I said that I don’t like the labels that are used here like hater and apologist but man, the stuff that has been posted in the 48 hours since my post hit the board comes really close to hate. I am embarassed by much of it. do these posters even realize that they are talking about a KC QB that is part of a 3-1 record? I thought this kind of talk was reserved for opponents players. Truth be told, many opposing players have been treated with more respect than our very own starting QB. It’s a sad day in Chiefs history for me.
