Gannon Says Weis is What Chiefs QB Cassel Needs

Former Kansas City Chiefs QB Rich Gannon and current CBS analyst chimed in on the hiring of Charlie Weis.

"This is a really important hire for Todd," Gannon told the Kansas City Star. "There is a lot of carry-over between their systems and their philosophies. I don’t think it will be a hard thing to mesh."

That's the word we've been getting from most of the experts out there. The "fit" is as perfect as it can be.

Gannon's area of expertise is quarterback and, for what it's worth, he believes Weis will be a great hire for Matt Cassel as well.

"Having Charlie will give him someone who can spend a lot of (high-)quality time with the quarterback and help develop that position. That’s what Matt Cassel needs. Nothing against Joel Collier, but he came out of the front office. He wasn’t even meant to coach."

The big question now becomes: How much did Weis have to do with Tom Brady's development? Cassel is in a similar situation with not much experience so I think everyone wants Weis to prove he had a lot to do with his transformation.

I'm not quite sure where he's going with that Collier statement. Collier currently holds the title of assistant GM and comes from (among several other places) New England where he coached the defensive backs.

"It’s always a good thing to add a coach to your staff who’s had a lot of success and won a lot of football games."

Yeah, I didn't know Collier was out on the field coaching.

Maybe when Matt started throwing more INTs they brought Collier down a few times during practice to five him a few pointers on how DBs look for passes and how to avoid them? That’s the only thing I can think of.

I have to say, I’ve been really glad to have Gannon’s support this year. It seemed like for a long time, he had few good things to say about this organization, but this year he’s been one of the very few people showing any kind of confidence in the new regime. I wonder if he still feels blindsided by the previous administration? Either way, his support has been welcome and appreciated from me.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

I could see why Gannon would be sour on the Chiefs.

After all, Marty picked Elvis Grbac over Rich Gannon and, as much as I admired Marty, that surely cost us a Superbowl in the 90s.

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

Has anybody heard

what contract Charlie Weis signed. Number of years. Money. Specific responisbilities. Etc. Aside from the obvious of being an OC lol. ???

I got some inside info on the fine details

Krispie Kreme caters his booth at every home game. He requested his headset microphone cover to be made from marshmallow. His gatorade bucket is to be filled with pickle spears. He wants to have an ice bath after every game…but no water he wants ice tea….and a big straw.

Just kidding…not really.

No offense to you personally,

but the “Charlie Weis is fat” jokes are getting just as old as the “Kansas City is the new New England” jokes.

You think it's coincidence that I bleed red?

To you...

Not to me….

Collier

During the Denver game I noticed someone “new” sitting with Cassell on the bench looking at charts after some of the offensive drives. I didn’t recognize the person.

Maybe that was Collier?

Gannon could possibly develop into a very bright and competent analyst

funny how QB’s become god analysts….Dilfer, Jaworski, Simms, LENNY THE COOL!

Thank you very much...

for not including Aikman on your list of “good analysts”. I can’t stand listening to him.

The only games I have seen that Aikman covered were Dallas games

and he has not removed himself from any bias he has for the Cowboys. Until he can become an impartial analyst for ALL teams, I will never consider him a top tier talent.

i think this is the best scenario for cassel

its practacly the same system maybe a couple new wrinkles. And he should b able to continue to move forward with the system instead of starting all over. I’m excited for next year now if we can improve our oline and b able to run the ball even more than we do it would give us an identity and take pressure off cassel

he has also said cassel can be a good quarterback and that a lot of it is timing(overthrowing deep balls etc)

the copper catch definitely puts that theory to the test as he was there in the offseason.

Haley is the right coach who just needs good people around him, much like Cassel
Vince Wilfork will be Scott Pioli's top offseason priority and will be a Chief.

I loved the Copper catch.

I do wish the ball had been thrown a foot shorter, then Copper would have been balanced out and truely in stride. Otherwise I think he’s in the endzone. No complaints though, we rocked that drive, and it was a hell of a throw.
