Glenn Dorsey Then and Now

Glenn Dorsey has been discussed tons of times throughout the last year on Arrowhead Pride. Some love Dorsey and think he will be a good player for us here in Kansas City. Others say TRADE HIM,he will never succeed and he was a waste of a pick. Well we now have a full season of the 3-4 defense in the books and we where able to see flashes of what Dorsey could do and cant do. Here is a look at Glenn Dorsey in 2009 and how he made the transition to defensive end.

  439x_medium

Star-divide

Im going to start off with some numbers. I took all the 3-4 defenses and stacked the defensive end with the best stats from each team against Dorseys stats for this year.

Number Of Tackles

1.Robaire Smith 62

2.Randy Starks 56

3.Justin Smith 55

4a.Glenn Dorsey 54

4b.Brett Keisel 54

6.Shaun Ellis 53

7a.Igor Olshansky 40

7b.Kenny Peterson 40

9.Mike Wright 35

10.Trevor Pryce 31

11.Luis Castillo 25

Looking at these numbers Dorsey looks pretty good. Coming in tied for 4th place in tackles after his first season in the 3-4 is a very good start. Dorsey showed he could take up blockers and he helped out the run game tremendously. If you want to see what the defenses run game was without him go watch the replay of the Browns game.

When comparing Dorsey to all the other 3-4 defenses I also came across another interesting stat. All the top 5 defensive ends in tackles have been in the league 5+ years except for Mr.Dorsey. I then realized another stat and that was that ALL the other top defensive ends in the 3-4 scheme have been in the league for atleast 5 years. This says a lot about Dorsey potential in my opinion because if he is able to keep building on these numbers we could have a beast for a 3-4 defensive end.

Number Of Sacks

1.Randy Starks 7

2a.Shaun Ellis 6.5

2b.Trevor Pryce 6.5

4.Justin Smith 6

5.Mike Wright 5

6.Brett Keisel 3

7.Luis Castillo 2

8a.Igor Olshansky 1.5

8b.Robaire Smith 1.5

10a.Glenn Dorsey 1

10b.Kenny Peterson 1

Looking at the sacks is where Dorsey doesnt look like a very good defensive end. I say that but then I would take sacks with a grain of salt. We all know sacks are nice (oh the days of Jared Allen) but so is a defensive end that can stop the run which is most likely going to be Dorseys specialty in the NFL. I do expect his sacks to go up though as soon as we get another good pass rusher besides Tamba Hali to help me become free.

All in all I realized that Dorsey is coming along VERY well and will be a top defensive end if we give it time. So guys dont fret Dorsey was worth the pick and will help us out in the long run. So who still wants to trade him and who wants to wait it out?

This is my first try at an "in depth" post so try to be easy on me guys!

Great Post

I enjoyed reading the stats you compiled. Looking at the names on the 3-4 list, none of them really stand out since they don’t get their name called a lot.

I also think it’s interesting that the DE with the most tackles only has a half sack more than Dorsey.

I like Dorsey

I think he did good this year and I think he will be a good player for years. But I still have a feeling that he gets traded. Im not saying that we should or that I would agree with trading him, I just have a feeling that we do.

I'm happy with Dorsey

I also don’t care if he is not a sacking machine, IMO the sacks in a 3-4 defense should be coming from the LB position. I think our LB’s are our weakest link on the team. T hat’s why i would draft McClain with the first pick not Berry.

by CPT.Caveman on Jan 7, 2010 9:29 PM CST reply actions

I think Dorsey is having an impact on the running game

I am confused/concerned by the lack of sacks since coming out of college his ability to put pressure up the middle was supposed to be his strong point, but since he’s not playing the 3 technique DT as he was intended to, we will probably never see that out of him.

by ChiefDJ on Jan 7, 2010 9:38 PM CST reply actions

He may start getting a few more sacks

once we get a true NT who demands a double team on almost every snap. Edwards did an admirable job, but the nose tackle is the foundation of the whole 3-4…a solid NT can make the 2 DE’s, the 2 OLB’s and the 2 ILB’s all look better than they are

I was one of the people that got annoyed by people wanting to trade him… thats the main reason I wanted to show where he stands in primarily a rookie season in the 3-4. thanks btw!

I voted no

because how many of his 54 tackles were in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage? Not very many. People often get caught up in the low amount of sacks, and DONT! That isnt a 3-4 end’s job. But it is his job to maintain the point of attack, which I dont feel he can do. He does an above average job, but he is ideally a 4-3 tackle who should play a 3-technique and only be responsible for one gap. Making a former 5th overall pick play out of position for only “above average” results isnt worth it to me.

Im going to say most of them where close to the line of scrimmage or 3-4 yards whitin it. I dont see Dorsey chasing many people down much farther than that.. As far as behind the line Im not sure. Ill try finding that stat.

Good point kc_rdrh8r

That’s for the talent evaluators to work out, in KC and other teams to whom KC might trade Dorsey. I think, as do others, here, that Dorsey’s ultimately of more value to KC as a player than as trade material. But if another team lusts for his services, and he’s agreeable and there’s a strong replacement in the wings, … And although there’s nothing I can point to other than circumstantial evidence, I think Dorsey + Jackson is a good LSU connection – a common bond that’s potentially very good for unit cohesion.

But it’s hard to tell how much more Dorsey will prosper with improved stout at NT and a more experienced DE on the opposite side. To my eye, he has pretty good power, good balance and good feet. He looks like he’s playing at a good weight for his frame, and we won’t notice him, much, next year, other than to generally observe that the front 3 are gettin’ it done, if Jackson comes into his own and Edwards/other step it up a couple notches.

Expect more speed and aggression from SOLB next year, too. It looked like Vrabel was used this year to side Jackson, but Vrabel’s not at his best, imo, in all the trash he had to play through in ‘09. He’s one guy I’d like to see have more freedom to decide his first couple steps, from a few yards off the ball. Boy, I do keep harpin’ on this Vrabel-to-SILB thing. Throw an Eric Norwood in the mix with Studebaker and Hali, and slide Vrabel inside. He’s currently the best diagnostician in the back 8.

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.

good post!!

yo I think Dorsey is staying for the simple fact that out of all of our starters on the line dorsey is the one doing his job! Jackson is coming around but if anybody should get traded it should be Jackson and put Gilberry in there,I’m not saying that jackson should get traded I just think dorsy should stay and will! we just need a NT to take the heavy duty off of jackson But then again If we get our new Dline coach maybe WE all might see sumthing!

I LOVE MY CHIEFS

Yup. New d-line coach might help.

So might new blood at C/G for contact drills in OTAs and camp.

But the Krumrie thing… Funny how Haley talked about already having a sit-down with Jackson, and a plan laid out for his offseason work. Suggests that evaluation of the #1 pick and the position coach was a high priority, and that Haley was less than satisfied with what he saw on the field and Krumrie’s impact on that.

Thank you for doing the work on it. I think he will continue to improve in all areas and be a very good DE.

Good work

What I’d like to see is how Dorsey will do with a new Defensive coordinator, and how differently he use’s Dorsey. But I know when a new one is brought in Dorsey will be one of the players that Pioli ask about first. He will want to know if the Chiefs are better off keeping him or trading him for as much and Pioli can get.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

This Chiefs team is closer to a new expansion team than it is a playoff contender, your expectations should match that.

by KC Fanatic on Jan 8, 2010 7:56 AM CST reply actions

If we can get a solid nose tackle than the sacks will come.

A nose that can eat up 2 blockers wil give Dorsey 1 on 1 chances. I really believe that we are a solid nose tackle from being a very good and deep d-line.

Exactly

Take New England for instance. They have Wilfork and the guy thats in Dorseys place (Mike Wright) Ever heard of him? me either… produced 5 sacks which isnt too shabby.

Great post

I have been a Dorsey believer all along. You mentioned going back and watching the Browns game rerun to see how effective the defense WASNT when Dorsey was out. I agree. A good NT will make Dorsey better too. Many of us seem to argue that we need a super star, pro bowler in every position or it isn’t good enough. Truth is that many SB teams won with many average players that listen to their coaching and didn’t make mistakes. This seems to be Haley’s style of play. Dorsey is way good enough to fit that scheme.

Just realized I forgot the Packers run a 3-4

the best performing DE for them was Cullen Jenkins who had 32 tackles which would put him at number 10 in tackles and 4.5 sacks which would put him at number 6 in sacks.

Yup

kind of what I was saying above… Nose tackles make a big difference

The problem I have with Dorsey is the same as Brodie

They both have a history of injuries. Is Dorsey’s knee going to hold up. With out Dorsey this defense could be in real trouble. I think Magee better really step up next year.

That's my only concern as well

I got blasted a little bit a few weeks ago for suggesting that we should consider trading him in the offseason if there are any good offers. I have no doubt that he can play the position well, but if his past injures come back into play then he’ll end up being another wasted draft pick. I suggested that we should give him to the Rams or Lions for their 2nd & 3rd rounders, and now I think that probably isn’t enough compensation…but if we were offered Seattle or San Fran’s two first rounders for him, I’d still say do it.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

by jmcgoblue on Jan 8, 2010 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

TWO first-rounders??? for Dorsey??? wow ...

I wanna be a GM and trade with YOU … oh hell YES!

REALITY CHECK!

you don’t REALLY think Dorsey’s that good, do you? you can’t … it’s impossible … 2 first rounders? for Dorsey? oh, my … any GM doing that should lose his job immediately, since he’d apparantly have already lost his mind …

hi, Mo!

by upamtn on Jan 9, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

Dorsey has only missed one game!

He started all 16 last year and 15 this year. Somehow I don’t see that as injury prone.

OK...the Koolaid buzz is gone now. I'm forced to admit that the state of the team had deteriorated far beyond what I had realized. The good news is I get to start mixing up a fresh batch of koolaid for next year. Oh Yeah!

by Zodeman on Jan 10, 2010 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

The run defense suffered late in the year when Dorsey was injured

He missed the Cleveland games and was injured when Denver and Buffalo visited KC. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I think I may have seen the stat here— something like the Chiefs allowed 130 yards on the ground in the 13 games where Dorsey was relatively healthy and 260 yards a game when Dorsey was injured/inactive. That’s huge. The guy can two-gap and I think he will develop into a premier run stuffer/block eater.
