Chiefs Hire Charlie Weis Approval Poll

We'll have more opinions and news on the Kansas City Chiefs hiring Charlie Weis later. But for now, we want to gauge the pulse of Chiefs nation:

Do you approve of the Chiefs hiring Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator?

Check out our recent stories on Weis for background:

Vote in the poll and let us know your opinion in the comments. Me? I'm terribly excited about the Chiefs hiring Weis. He's experienced, should fit right in to the culture and should be head and shoulders above Todd Haley when it comes to managing the offense.

Seems like a great hire

Similar offensive style to Haley will make the transfer smooth. Plus he has a good track record with QBs. Can’t wait to see our offense next season.

Draft

Upcoming Notre Dame players in the 2010 draft…..QB Jimmy Clausen, WR Golden Tate, and OT Sam Young! All great players and all from the offensive side of the ball. My January 6th prediction is OT Sam Young around the 4th round.

Keep your mock drafts to yourself and the fanposts!!

Geeze, you draftniks can’t discuss the weather without mentioning that some guy named Snow should be around in the 6th round and could be a great bla bla bla

I personally approve of this hire at this time

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I disagree with it, but I can understand it.

At least the voting is close. : ]

Main thing for me is, that Haley was smart enough to realize that he need the help. So, kudos to Haley. I think this speaks volumes about the kind of coach he will become.

It's all about winning.

Haley wants to win, and this move proves it.

"Ego"

The ego thing always cracked me up. Compared to Herm, Haley is a selfless monk. He takes blame, admits mistakes, strives to get better, etc, etc. Whitlock is a loser.

Whitlock has the biggest ego of any of them

“The NFL Executive of the Decade is coming to town? Well he’d better give me inside info or else I’ll teach HIM a lesson!”

Reading Whitlock makes you dumber.

Weis should be a great hire. The pieces are coming together.

makes you wonder if haley and pioli had this in mind

at the beginning of the season and thats why Haley took over OC so that the team would have a jump start on the offense when Weis got here. Alot of people were expecting Weis to be fired at the end of this last season.

by banshee_01 on Jan 6, 2010 6:47 PM CST reply actions

I'm not sure if they knew they would hire Weis

but I know the plan all along was to hire somebody from their bloodline. That’s why I never bought into the ‘Haley couldn’t check his ego and fired Gailey’ talk.

Tate

This hiring has to help our odds of taking golden tate in the second round..

I'm cautiously optimistic

I’m glad they hired an OC and Weis certainly has the credentials, I guess I’m just a bit reluctant to lean on former Patriots too much.

I’m sure by the time the season rolls around, I’ll love the move.

by bh13 on Jan 6, 2010 6:49 PM CST reply actions

Potentially an excellent move

Always have to see how these things work out— nothing’s guaranteed in life. You have to hope that they don’t get into a ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ situation with game planning.

I don’t expect a huge improvement in the Chiefs’ offensive performance: they are still limited by a lack of playmakers, Cassel’s relatively llmited experience starting in the NFL and adjusting to new receivers, the musical chairs game that has been the KC O-line for a good part of the year, etc. Good coaches, no matter how good, are still limited by the talent of their players. But just from the standpoint of teaching the young players they draft, it has to be a strong positive.

Should be interesting to see how the KC draft and personnel changes will reflect input from Weis. Not so much drafting a bunch of Notre Dame guys, but just going after new receivers, etc. Should DB feel good about having an OC like Weis, or will a fresh set of eyes seal his fate in KC?

by Wheatboy74 on Jan 6, 2010 6:51 PM CST reply actions

i agree here

we have to keep it in perspective. As long as we don’t expect to magically start scoring 45 points per game we should be happy. I think there will be a steady improvement, but without the proper players it can only improve so far. I do think however, that Weis will have some good input on some players coming out of college since he had to watch and game plan for some of them.

i approve

one of just a few moves this new organization has made… next move needs to be a compitant DC!

by rich04 on Jan 6, 2010 6:58 PM CST reply actions

The only thing I like about this hiring...

Is Weis can just slide into the system thats already in place and run it with very little “overhaul”. For the rest I dont really care one way or the other that he’s hired.

by GenericBrand on Jan 6, 2010 6:59 PM CST reply actions

It's a good hire

This is an instant solution to the team’s single greatest deficiency; Haley in the three coaching roles of HC, OC, and QBC.

It gives Haley a TON more credibility IMO. He’s admitted a weakness, addressed it in fine fashion and he should have far more time to be the HC next year than he did this year. He got the one man who has the right combination of experience and familiarity with the system Haley wants to run.

Bravo!

Great Hire

Weis and Romeo- last time they were coordinators together, they won a few games didn’t they?

Darn too bad we ran the Haley approval already.

Be curious to see the results of it after this announcement.

Get rid of

Clancy and we could all feel a lot better. I do like the Weis hire…. Good move

by sstutz on Jan 6, 2010 7:28 PM CST reply actions

Don't worry

Just as the so-called OC controversy talk is now exposed for what it was all along, they’re eventually going to show the long term plan at DC and put our minds at ease.

by old_school on Jan 7, 2010 1:28 AM CST up reply actions

I hope since Haley knows Weis well and "leans on him"

He doesn’t end up yelling at him since Weis is an assistant to Haley (Mo Carthon style). If any falling out occurs, then expect Weis to go running to Pioli and Scott having to settle disputes. Even with that in mind, I love this hiring. How could you not?

by Sam D on Jan 6, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

It will be interesting to see how this works.

It seems to me that Belichek spend his not Head Coach time with the defense. Weis probably have a pretty free rein with the offense. It will be interesting to see how he works out with an offensively minded coach that will likely want to be involved with what is going on with the offense. Also makes me wonder, will Haley keep the QB coach title or hand that over the Weis?

by Chyladin on Jan 6, 2010 8:25 PM CST reply actions

***Supposed to be

Belichek spent his non-HC time . . .

And . . . Weis probably HAD a pretty free . . .

by Chyladin on Jan 6, 2010 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

Meh

I do think Weis is an upgrade, and I’m certainly happier with Weis as OC than with Haley pulling triple duty, but let’s just say that I’m not expecting any miracles with the offense. But I am glad the Chiefs finally have an OC.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

Miracles? Nah, but...

Just getting a competent OC to handle the job full-time should do a lot for the O, and I haven’t heard anyone saying Weis’s incompetent. My hope is that CW will advise Haley to drop everything except the HC duties, and (I hope) give him good input on some quality O-side assistants, like QB and WR coaches.

Come to that, I think the O-line underperformed to their talent this year, due to all the shifting done early on. Everything I’ve ever read about that group tells me that they need experience in position, with as many of their teammates in position, as possible to function well together, and they didn’t have that this year. Which isn’t to say that we shouldn’t improve that unit – on the contrary. I just hope we have a core group now, with pieces that can be built around.

All in all, I’m looking for a solid improvement on the O-side next year. No miracles, just solid, noticeable improvement. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for the D, since I don’t think the DC got max performance out of the talent level he was working with this year.

People rightly say that a coach can’t be great without great talent, but great talent can’t be great with a bad coach, either, and it’s easier to replace one DC than 22 players, so to speak.

Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.
Linebackers: looking better
D-lineL slight improvement
O-line: WTF?!?

by Bleedingredandgold on Jan 6, 2010 10:41 PM CST up reply actions

Why does it have to mean we're expecting miracles?

It’s a good hire to send a team in the direction we want it to go. It is good news to land a proven candidate that is from the same system, I don’t care how you slice it. Maybe just me, but I really value putting together pieces that fit.

Great Pick Up

Now I wonder if Haley will put him on his workout program to lose weight?

by Rowdy Chief on Jan 6, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

Josh Cribbs!

would give us a legitmate WR as well as upgrade the returns 100%…. Oo.

draft eric berry and darryll stuckey.... and our defense problems are next to solved...

by Abyssmal on Jan 6, 2010 10:59 PM CST reply actions

We'd have to give up draft picks

Cribbs is not a legitimate WR. Has 36 receptions and 288 yards in 5 years. Dynamic returner – YES. We would have to deal a draft pick for him and I don’t think that’ll happen. But Darren Sproles is a FA.

by BJ Kissel on Jan 6, 2010 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

A change of opinion.

I was originally hesitant to have the Chiefs bring Weis in, due to not wanting to lose the continuity the offense seemed to gain the last few games and having to learn a new system, but after listening to Coach Haley’s press conference, he stated their offensive philosophies are almost identical, so there should be a minimal learning curve, especially for Matt Cassel, who, of course played under him. I think it is the right decison by Haley, to delgate the OC position, and to be just the Head Coach, and I see no power struggles between the two, due to their past relationship. I think Cassel will thrive under Charlie Weis, if given the personel to give him some additional weapons and protection. Look out NFL, this is gonna be one explosive offense! Now, if we can get someone to hold the other team under 30 points, we won’t have a repeat of the Vermeil era, and can be very good on both sides of the ball. The nucleus of a playoff caliber team is there. Pioli and Haley just need to add some pieces, and I trust they will. Can you say playoffs in 2010? Can you say Lombardi Trophy within 3 years? Damn, I’m as optimistic as when Montana and Marcus Allen were brought in, and I think this is even better, with a young team, great leadership, and the potential to be a contender every year. Chiefs, the new dynasty of this decade! Mark it down!!!!

by Racyman on Jan 7, 2010 4:01 AM CST reply actions

Haley didn't give Clancy any vote of confidence.

In his last Press Conference, Haley was pressed to say whether or not he would keep Pendergrast, and he moved around the subject fairly well. He sure as hell didn’t endorse him, but was being politically correct in saying “the evaluation period is just beginning, and all coaches, including himself will be evaluated.” I think Mo Carthon is going to learn alot from Haley and Weis, if Weis agrees to keep him on the staff, and he is someday going to be a great OC or even HC. I hope we can keep him around awhile. The players respect him, Haley is in love with him, and with Charlie’s weight issues, he is a stroke or heart attack waiting to happen. Good post about him passing Haley’s conditioning program! My hell, if they also bring in Crennell, those 1,000 lbs. the team lost last season, are going to be made up in two hirings!

by Racyman on Jan 7, 2010 4:12 AM CST reply actions

This hire is great for one simple fact:

It removes pressure from Todd Haley. If all this does is give him more time to do his Head Coaching duties, then it’s a great hire. And the fact that he can rely on Weis to run the same kind of offense and train his guys the way he wants them to be trained is huge.

GREAT hire.

Penn State to Kansas City...Always a winning combination.

by YNinja on Jan 7, 2010 5:32 AM CST reply actions

It could only be good

Our coaching staff was thrown together at the last minute and we had to settle. All great teams have good coaching and we have only to go up from here. Haley can’t wear both hats and he needed some one who can bring along Cassel and our recievers. We are not going to stop here….I see a new DC and a bright future.

This is a great hire.

Haley and Weis have history together, Weis has a proven track record of winning. We needed this hire. Now we need to figure out what’s going on on the Defensive side of the ball.
