Mort: Charlie Weis Accepts Job With the Chiefs

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that ex-Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis will accept the position of offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Per Mort's sources, a formal announcement should be made in the next 24-48 hours.

"Weis makes all [the] sense in world," Mort tweeted. "Nobody questioned his offensive prowess at Notre Dame. Cassel ran his system in New England. Great move by Haley."

We've speculated on this hiring for quite some time and in the past few days the rumors have heated considerably.

The Chiefs connection is there:

  • Chiefs head coach Todd Haley and Weis shared an office while with the New York Jets
  • Chiefs GM Scott Pioli was with Weis in New England

Today, Haley told reporters that Weis' system is basically a perfect fit for what he's trying to do in Kansas City.

The Chicago Bears were also reportedly in the mix for Weis' services.

Welcome to Kansas City, Mr. Weis.

SWEET!

Next Romeo…..

Then Eric Berry

I will forever hate the Bucs if they select Eric Berry (thanks for ruining my day Todd McShay - I hope you are dead wrong)

Eric Berry needs to be a Kansas City Chief

Be Uncommon.

Yep.......

Eric Berry…….Believe the hype. He’s an instant pro bowler, I would rather use some of our stockpiled picks to trade up if we have to. He’s so good.

And Romeo? I would like to see it, but Clancy is good, just didn’t have talent. I think I’d rather stick with Clancy so this team isn’t a 2nd rate patriots team, I think it’ll give us identity.

Crennel is a good defensive coach, who knows the 3-4 and defensive linemen, specifically

Also, from those reports, he was slated to be the guy in 2009, anyway…

Crennel is the same as Pioli

Remains to be seen. I don’t think you can really say anyone that succeeded under Bellichick is really “proven” without him.

was not only a good DC, but a great linebackers coach. he will be hired. why? because we have linebackers with high ceilings for potential like derrick johnson. who else are they going to hire for DC? dick jauron? nope sorry. crennell isnt fit to be a HC even though he went 10-6 in 2006. hes a defensive mind. he will be a good fit.

romeo was never a LB coach.

(unless you simply mean NE’s LBs excelled under his watch as DC)

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

difference between Crennell and any other DC is...

He already has a good working relationship with both Haley and Weis…they get along, know eachothers philosophy, and all work together well. Sometimes that chemistry between coaches can really be an “X” factor

He has more than just success in NE under his belt.

starting to sound like a broken record, but I actually submit that Crennel is somewhat UNDERrated
special teams coach for the Giants in 86, d-line coach in 90…both teams won the super bowl also d-line coach for the AFC champ 96 pays. +3 super bowls with NE in 01,03 & 04. Pats haven’t won a SB since he was there. Giants didn’t win another SB for 15 years after he left.

He and Belichick both had one winning season coaching the Browns on their own.

Nothing’s set in stone, but I think his record speaks for itself.

I think Gunther sucks, his defense sucked in KC, without Marty, and the defense got worse in Detroit once he got there. But everywhere Marty went his defenses were good. How can that be overlooked?

I don’t really see him “defending” Pendergast. He wants him gone.

He’s using the logic that since he’s still here, Crennel won’t be. There’s nothing to say he’s defending Clancy.

1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB

And I really don’t have an ideal guy for Defense… I like the idea of Pepper Johnson, I dont know who the up and coming coordinators are, but I like the idea of hiring the next great head coach to be our coordinator instead of a guy who couldn’t cut it. All I know...

is that in the NFL when you have so many integral parts everyone being on the same page is key to winning. I mean every part. From the GM to HC relationship. To the HC and his assisents. And obviously player units like the offensive line, secondary, and QB to WRs.

Also, Crennel proved that he was able to coordinate a talented defense to the superbowl. They key word is talented. We shouldn’t be worrying about if Crennel got too much credit, but if Pioli got too much credit. He is the one that will provide the talent. So if he has a comfortable relationship with Haley, and proved that he can be a good D-Coordinatoor I say case closed.

by Joel Thorman on Jan 6, 2010 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

I do think this is good...

But i also think we still need romeo. our offense showed some signs of life and haley needed help but our defense got the shit kicked out of them in almost every game this year and when they didnt they would give up one or two big drives to lose it. i realize the offense could have won those games just as well as the defense could have but haley is a good offensive mind and would have gotten this figured out over time while the defense would have been left to flounder much like the vermiel era

by dt58 on Jan 6, 2010 5:49 PM CST reply actions

Getting Crennel would be huge!!!!

HC experience from both our coordinators..Mort claims Haley id theone that really pushed for Weis….I think this may calm Haley down a little bit…He now has someone that will keep him in check a little bit.

by KCinAZ on Jan 6, 2010 5:50 PM CST reply actions

yeah, Haley was the catalyst for getting him, for sure

I’m not sure Weis “keeps him in check”… but they sure make a good team of offensive minds, and gives Haley more time to become a great HC

you wont see Haley in a big shouting match with him on the sidelines. Weis wont take that shit. Haley got in some coaches ass earlier this yr. Cant remember who.

The great thing about Weis

and, well, also with Crennel, is that since both failed at being head coaches, other teams will be hesitant to take them away from us once we become winners.

by Vince D on Jan 6, 2010 5:54 PM CST reply actions

Not so sure

Weis failed in the NCAA
Crennel failed in CLE (where everyone fails without Bernie Kozar)

Each of these guys may still get looks elsewhere. Besides, Crennel is likely to interview 8,000 times a year for teams looking to comply with the Rooney rule.

For justice we must go to Don Pioli

by Sudden on Jan 6, 2010 5:57 PM CST up reply actions

I dont care where they coached...

Haley is very green, Having guys with HC experience can only help him. They have been through a lot of stuff he has not been exposed to yet. A guy with HC experience is more likely to stand up and say “youre not doing this right” or have input that can help in other situations. A normal assistant usually just does what he is told and kisses his bosses ass without question…
This could be a very very potent coaching team…..Im loving the direction this is going.

by KCinAZ on Jan 6, 2010 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

My whole point with that comment was that eventhough they failed as HCs

both of them will still get plenty of interviews (addressing the comment I responded to). I said that they’re failures where they did coach were in part not relevant to how they would be as HCs in other NFL cities.

For justice we must go to Don Pioli

I just love the fact that Cassel

Will have a guy who has developed young QB into a very successful, elite QB. Now, they have a guy too that can be in Cassel’s ear all the time, helping manage and run the offense, something a HC simple can’t do because he is in charge of the entire team! Great move and bringing in people who KNOW football!

I also don’t see why he prefers this over the Bears OC job since his son plays in Chicago

But good news at any rate

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
