The Crennel & Weis Effect

Chiefs fans are clamoring, yearning, begging for Romeo Crennel, and Charlie Weis to become members of the Kansas City Chiefs. Adding these two coaches may have multiple effects on the Chiefs. During this article I will explore the possibilities...

Star-divide

Romeo Crennel

Free Agents

Romeo Crennel instantly gives our defense credibility. Free Agents searching for new homes could now look at the Chiefs and see a bright future. Not only would money be a tool for persuasion, but Crennel's experience, and super bowl rings would be another factor in getting bigger name free agents to join the team. Having Clancy as coordinator, I could not imagine a free agent being excited about working under him. Imagine this for one second...Signing Vince Wilfork in free agency because he knows the coordinator, knows the scheme, and gets the money. Imagine prying D'Well Jackson from the Browns, and having him be the center piece of our 34 defense. The possibilities are endless if we add Crennel. Im not saying these guys will be in KC next year, but having Crennel on board gives us more ammunition to get players of that caliber.

Teaching & Nurturing Young Talent

Romeo Crennel knows the 34 defense inside and out. He has worked with, and taught some of the biggest names to play in a 34 defense, in the past decade. Players like Bruschi, Seymour, Wilfork, Law, Harrison, Vrabel, have all studied under Crennel. The Chiefs currently have a few diamonds in the rough playing in their 34 defense. Tamba Hali, Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey, Derrick Johnson, and Brandon Flowers, can all become excellent players under the right tutelage. Their full potential has yet to be unleashed, and I believe Crennel can come in and get these guys playing on a pro bowl level. For years the defense has been ignored, or misused, or even mistreated, in turn stunting the growth of our players. Crennel can come in and stabilize a unit that has been in flux since Dick Vermiel took over.

Expedite the Winning Process

If some of you haven't noticed, as of late, the defense has been the cog mostly holding the team back from success. I am not saying that the offensive unit is a Juggernaut, but many times this year they put us in positions to win. To only have the defense give up 90 yard drives, 60 yard TD catches, 70 yard runs, etc. I can reel off a few games, where if the defense had made a stop, the Chiefs would of won (Oak, Dallas, Cleveland, Buffalo). Crennel can get this unit into shape, and expedite the winning process. Crennel has the knack for what plays to call, and when to call them, unlike Clancy. I believe Crennel can take the Chiefs defense from the bottom of the pack to the top 15.

Charlie Weis

Free Agents & the Draft

Similar to the way Crennel gives the defense creditability, Weis has the same effect on the offense. Free Agents would be more inclined to work under a 3 time super bowl winning coordinator, than a 1 time losing super bowl coordinator. Weis is known for his lethal passing game, and making average players superstars. Weis could also convince Pioli and Haley to draft Golden Tate, if he is there in the 2nd round. No one knows his talent, better than Weis. In Weis's offense, Golden Tate had a monstrous season. Golden Tate in the slot, for the Chiefs would be a beautiful thing.

Experience Mentoring Quarterbacks

Before there was Tom Brady, there was a Drew Bledsoe. Before Bledsoe went down with injury, he was having a fantastic year. He was on track to make it to the Pro Bowl, and maybe make a run for MVP. That success is directly attributed to Charlie Weis. His spread scheme, and ability to mentor quarterbacks did wonders for Bledsoe. After Bledsoe, Brady continued that success. Brady was a late round pick, who many people had never heard of. Weis took him under his wing, tailored the scheme to his abilities, and it ultimately lead to major success. That same Tom Brady, is the Tom Brady who is now known as a future Hall Of Famer. Weis also took Jimmy Clausen under his wing, and corralled his talent. Clausen became one of the most prolific passers in the NCAA in 2009. Clausen threw 28 TD's and only 4 INT's under Weis.  Weis can come in, and mentor Matt Cassel in the same way he his previous quarterbacks. Cassel has the tools to be a superb quarterback in the league, he just needs a excellent teacher to guide him. Haley is good with quarterbacks, but he obviously cannot devote a lot of time to Cassel because of his numerous job titles. I would expect Cassel to be a top 10 QB under Wies.

National Spotlight & Ticket Sales

I do not live in Kansas City. I am a California boy, often scouring for Chiefs news. Ill be upfront and honest with you all. I reside in Raider Nation. Born and grown in Oakland, CA. Now don't hold that against me, my entire family is from KC! Out here on the west coast, Chiefs news is rare. I spend half my day on arrowhead pride because its my only source. Last offseason, there was a welcomed change. The Chiefs were on all national sports television shows, and radio shows during the offseason. With moves like adding Pioli and Haley to the organization, trading for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel, and picking #3 in the NFL Draft, I got my Chiefs fix . Adding Weis & Crennel gives the Chiefs even more National Spotlight. The coaching staff would be some what of an all star staff. I love seeing the Chiefs on ESPN, and I would probably see them more often if we got these guys.

This season, the Chiefs f aced one blackout, and was threatened by another. The Chiefs fan base is one of the loyalest fan bases in the entire national football league. Those who chose to stay home and view the game should be able to. Weis is a high profile name, who can help fill the seats, so we don't face another blackout situation.

Conclusion

Acquiring both Crennel and Weis would do wonders for the Kansas City Chiefs. Pioli often talks about changing the culture, and this would be a good way to do so. Success breads success, and success is something the Chiefs have not had in 3 years. Adding these coaches, would also take a little bit off of Haley's plate. I am a Haley fan, and believe with less tasks, he can really excel as an head coach. Haley seems to have the knack for motivating, and i would like to see him devote more time to the entire team. It seems Pioli, Haley, Crennel, and Weis are all very familiar with each other, and are friends. That alone is a great thing. Having a coaching staff that has similar thought processes, and values would be tremendous. Not only would the staff work well together, but it would rub off on the players. After all the rumors in the past few days about both coaches, I have become even more excited for the future. I pray, and hope that these rumors come to fruition, because if they do, success could very well be right around the corner for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Check out my latest mock offseason. Its very detailed for those of you who have minimal knowledge of college players, and free agents. I think its my best one yet!

Hopefully this can get enough recs to make it to the front page

lemme add one other big upside:

ticket sales! If Haley comes back with essentially the same package, drafts some key (but not necessarily thrilling) lineman we could be looking at some tepid season ticket and home game attendance. However, assemble a “Dream Team” of coaches, even if a bit overhyped, and only the stodgiest of chiefs fans couldn’t be pretty excited to at least see what kind of product they put on the field. I’m stoked just thinkiing about it. Bringing back the “Arrowhead Effect” will be huge. Pass the Kool-Aid – I’m Buyin’

nice!

I think ticket sales and more national spot light is another effect. Ill work on adding that paragraph today. Thanks!

You sell tickets by winning. Argue that they will help the Chiefs win, but I detest the "Let's fill seats just to fill seats."

Prediction for '09: Chiefs are looking like a .500 team, especially considering Denver's inattention to D-Line, Chokeland's disarray, and a San Diego team that looks like it's on the decline. With a weak schedule, Chiefs steal a few and win between 7 and 9 games, and if .500 or better, will contend for supremacy in a weak division.

Agreed

I made some statements saying what players would want to come play here, on the “D” side of the ball, with what we have now as a coaching staff. I didn’t think to many would want to play for us, but if we got R.Crennel that would change my opinion, and give me high hope’s for us next year.
I just don’t now how it going to work finding a OC that going to be Haley’s puppet, and really don’t see C.Weis doing that. Like i’ve said before let’s keep what we have now and not force these guy’s to start over learning a new scheme, if T.Haley want to be the play caller then let him do it, but if he can’t handle both job’s, find a new HC.

by CPT.Caveman on Jan 6, 2010 9:07 AM CST reply actions

After all

We didn’t have to many good coach’s to choose from, and we had to get someone. T.Haley is IMO lucky to be the Chiefs HC, because he got the job dew to the lack of good options.

Crennel

You said the Chiefs defense could be top 15 with the addition of Crennel. I agree – and that’s top 15 after just Crennel’s first season. Adding additional talent (hello, Eric Berry!) over the next season or two could put them into the top 10 or better.

With the right coaching and the right talent alongside of him, Tamba Hali would be a 15-sack guy. Not to mention Jackson and Dorsey becoming dominant against the run. Derrick Johnson could be wreaking havoc like he did this past Sunday. Man, I’m excited just thinking about the possibilities of bringing Crennel onboard.

Thats all I have to add to this one. Nice Post.

Nice Job Larry

I agree on pretty much all counts. If these two guys come to KC, this team could make a DRASTIC turnaround in a hurry.

It will be interesting to see what would happen to the offense if Weis were to take over. Honestly, I REALLY like the direction the offense has been going in and I wouldn’t want to see too many changes on that side of the ball. Not that it wouldn’t be good under Weis but, a complete change in schemes could really slow the growth of the offense and prolong the time that it will take to make the team successful. However, the attention that Cassel would get under Weis could be enough difference to make up the difference. I have not been very excited about Cassel so far but, A guy like Weis could change his game in large measures.

from Looney's blog

"Charlie is a friend of mine," Haley said. "We shared three years together in a room not even able to have two full-sized desks in there. Charlie is a guy that I have a great amount of respect for as a coach. He is a coach that system-wise we are as close as you can be.

"Charlie is a guy who I’ve talked to throughout the year, no different than I talk to Coach Parcells or some of the other guys that I lean on for thoughts or advice," Haley continued. "I cannot say that I haven’t talked to Charlie, because I do talk to Charlie."

About Weis’ fit with Kansas City…

"In speaking of Charlie, Charlie would allow us to run the offense we’ve been running if he were in this mix," Haley said. "We’re in that process right now throughout the whole staff."

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

Not sold on Weis but bring on Crennel.

Would really like to see someone other then Weis on our sidelines come september though. Maybe Weis and Haley worked together once but things change and it would be too many egos on the field. If we brought in both the guys we would have 5 former/current head coaches and 6 guys who have been/are coordinators in the organization.

Having a ton of former coaches and coordinators may not be such a bad thing.

It all depends on how well the staff gels. Most of them have worked together at other locations, for years. Haley raves about Weis. I dont see ego’s getting in the way.

Thank You

To those who rec’d this article, and gave compliments. Quick question, the more rec’s your article gets, the better chance you have to make it to the front page? I sure would love to see this thing smack dab on the homepage.

another SF Bay Chiefs fan

Wreck’ed… I like the detailed thoughts you’ve put into this highly traffic topic (and your draft mock, too).
As an aside, I’m here in the SF Bay as well (Mountain View, to be exact). Do you know if there’s any places that show Chief’s games on a regular basis? Watching that final Denver game was the highlight of this season for me. But it would be nice to have some other Chiefs fans around so I’m not just yelling at my dogs during games :)

You know

I have still yet to find a place to gather with chiefs fans. I usually just plop in the rocking chair and watch NFL Ticket all Sunday

Best post I've seen on why we should want those guys - especially Weis

Crennel I still have concerns about. I live in the Cleveland area, and I can tell you that Crennel didn’t help make a top defense in this town. I’m still concerned that a lot of the DC work in NE was really Belichek’s work and not Crennel’s. I won’t be upset if he’s added, but I’m not going to assume overnight success.

For people who doubt Crennel

I want you to remember that the Patriots haven’t won a super bowl without him, and the defense has gotten worse every year. Take that however you want, but i’m not totally convinced that Bill Belicheck is the sole man behind the master plan.

Crennel

Haley said the same thing about Weis about he hasnt talk to him about coming to K.C but look what happend!! Now because of Weis coming here I would expect Crennel here in like a week or sooner just by that statement haley said!!
