A look back at 2009 WRs
Today we take a look back at the Chiefs 2009 Wrs. I know this will be a pretty big subject seeing that the Wrs have been under the microscope all season with the amount of drops we produced this year...
via a.espncdn.com
47 Receptions for 589 Yards. 4 Touchdowns. Averaged 12.5 Yards Per Catch
2009 proved to be a bad year for Chiefs Wr Dwayne Bowe. Bowe started out pretty hot catching all kind of touchdowns but he wasnt getting the yards and still dropping balls. Bowe ended up getting suspended midway through the season because of a banned substance. Bowe missed four games because of the suspension and failed to do much when he made it back on the field. 2009 was arguably Bowes worst season in the NFL and he needs to get back to his 08 form going into 2010.

45 Receptions for 730 Yards and 5 Touchdowns. Averaging 16.2 Yards Per Catch
Chambers was a midseason pick up after being released by the San Diego Chargers. Chambers came in and picked up Dwayne Bowes slack and earned his right to be a Chief. Chambers is due to be a free agent and I for one want Chris back in KC next season. However I do think a number change is in order...11 just looks weird on Chambers.

4 Receptions for 68 Yards. Averaging 17 Yards Per Catch
Copper was primarily a special teams player in 09 but did make one big catch against the Broncos going for 50 yards. Copper was one of the best special teams players all season long.
1 Reception for 9 Yards. 2 Rushes for 42 Yards. 16 Kick Returns for 317 Yards. Averaging 19.8 Yards Per Return
Lawrence was off and on the Chiefs roster all season. Lawrence was drafted by the Chiefs to be a returned but never actually locked up the job at any point in the season. Quinten did show some promise on his two reverse runs going for 42 yards between the two.
Lance Long
via www.france24.com
20 Receptions for 178 Yards. Averaging 8.9 Yards Per Catch.
Lance Long was signed off of the Arizona Cardinals practice squad and saw little time on the field. Long has been compared to Wes Welker (as much as some hate it) and looks to try and lock down a spot on the Chiefs roster in 2010 to be a slot WR.
36 Receptions for 367 Yards and 2 Touchdowns. Averaging 10.2 Yards Per Catch
Wade was picked up by the Chiefs after being released by the Vikings. Wade came in and played a huge game against the Oakland Raiders and then kind of dissapeared. Wade found himself being deactivated many times thie season because of dropped passes. Wade was one of the few players to actually argue with Coach Haley all season (happened a couple of times). Wade also returned punts. Bobby Wade could easily be somewhere besides KC next season.
So theres the WRs. Who stays ? Goes? Suprises?

If someone could tell me where to find the drops
Id be more than happpy to add them to each players stats
Heres my take..
By looking at the Wrs you would think that we actually have a pretty solid group of guys. And that very well could be but they have to hold onto the ball. Three of the WRs have had success in the past Bowe,Chambers and Wade. If we get all three of those guys playing like they should we could have a dangerous group of guys. Then if you throw in Lawrence or Long to come in and make some catches we would be alright. I do think we need to upgrade by drafting atleast 1 Wr next year. I would be happy with Tate or Gilyard from Cincy because he is also very good at returns.
No look back at Mark Bradley, Jeff Webb, Amani Toomer??????
Good post though!
"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."
I thought about it but I decided to just stick with guys that are still on the team as of now...
If you would like I could do a part two with those guys. And thanks I appreciate it.
Agree that drafting a WR would be a good idea
I think the KC wide receivers are, on average, lacking in speed and reliability, so adding talent is very important to make the offense more productive. compared to the rest of the league, I’d rate the KC receiving corps in the bottom third. I would keep Chambers and Lawrence, and Copper for special teams.
I’m still on the fence re Bowe: if this is his ceiling, and he isn’t going to develop into more of a red zone threat, then I’d rather trade him now and look at developing someone new. On the other hand, Bowe does draw the best coverage personnel from the opposing defense, so you can make an argument that he’s physically talented enough to still be a threat and help in the KC passing game.
I sometimes wonder
If Cassel just doesn’t like Bowe. Bowe is a good WR that IMO was just forgotten about in some games. I don’t know if it’s the coach or the QB that has lot faith in him because of the drop’s, but you just have to keep throwing him the ball, he will come around.
I dont think he was forgotten or not liked by Cassel...
He is the biggest receiving threat we have so defenses roll the coverage towards him and double him a lot more. Cassel is protective with the ball( a little too much sometimes) and wont throw into coverage. Hopefully next yr, with a little more time and confidence, he will start throwing it up and letting Bowe fight for the ball more.
more coverage with no TG
In his previous years, Bowe got less attention from other teams, who always had to game plan for Gonzalez in the passing game. This year, especially early in the year, teams knew Bowe was the only receiving threat on the roster. And our OL was terrible in pass protection in the first half of the year. By the time the OL starting playing halfway decently, Bowe was suspended.
Bowe’s a good WR who had a troubled season. Some of those troubles were his own fault. Hopefully this year he’ll get back to where he was. The OL should be better than it was, which should make Cassel better, and we should hopefully have another receiving threat by next year.

Wade = Gone
I think he whines way too much, and he isn’t even good enough to be gettin in shouting matches with Haley. We need to upgrade this position just like we did this year after we draft a WR……..Evaluate, bring in competition, then replace one WR at a time whenever possible.
I hope we see a different D. Bowe next season (more consistent play and change him to #2WR)
Yeah
Wade is most likely gone, after the arguement with Haley on the side lines in the denver game. As we have seen before if you and the coach don’t get along your outta here.
WR thoughts
For all the hating and speculation… I think Bowe is still the main guy, and Haley will keep pushing him to get better, and IMO, he will get better
Chambers should be brought back FOR SURE
Long and Lawrence are still intriguing options, IMO… they are just very green.
Wade can move on.
I’d consider drafting Golden Tate/Mardy Gillyard in the 2nd round…OR Freddie Barnes/Taylor Price in the 4th or 5th….
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers
sorry for the draft thoughts there...
not trying to make a mock draft out of this thread… just looking at the WR corps and thinking about what’s missing.

No prob Stag
I acutally agree with you on Tate and Gilyard I think either one could help us through the air or on returns
Tate and Gillyard are 2 guys in particular who's draft status will be determained by the combine
If one of them runs a 4.3 40, they will be 1st rounders but if someone runs a 4.5 or 4.6 I can easily see them drop into the 4th round. The draft seems to be that finnickie with WR’s.

IMO..
Our first pick should be WR Dez Bryant….that would open up a lot of stuff in the passing game and when you set records for drops you have to bring someone else in…Wade is a veteran WR and that should not be happening with him. You got to kinda let Bowes drops slide because he is so dynamic. But, by bringing in Dez, you give Cassel another weapon and free up Bowe a little more. It may also light a fire under Bowes ass to be more productive if he sees that we have another young stud WR just waiting to take his No.1 spot….Haley would love to have a WR tandem like he had in AZ too…
I wouldnt oppose that move...
but, if you got the pic, you might as well get the best available…we have plenty of cap room and multiple picks. We need weapons. If you cant score points you cant win games…..
According to the poll
we need to make sure Chambers knows hes a wanted man lol
Am I the only one that thinks the above pic of him is sweet?
I'm happy with Bowe, Long, Lawrence returning
Copper is an FA, but I think we should be able to get him back. Great ST player.
Chambers I’m torn about. He’s been a GREAT add, easily worth the salary this year. I haven’t heard him say he wants to come back, which is a concern. Don’t know if we’ll want to pay him what he wants, this may be his last shot at a big payday. I’m also not discounting John Obviousman’s comment (as much as he gets under my skin) that Chambers tends to be a TO type in that he’s fine for a year and then has problems.
I hope we don’t have Wade back because I think that would be a bad sign. I hope we get 2 solid FAs (Chambers could be one of them) and perhaps another guy in the draft who could double as a KR/PR. I’m not too interested in seeing a Day one pick spent on a WR.
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then give up. There's no use in being a damn fool about it." ---W.C. Fields
Chambers
I know what you mean being torn about what to do with Chambers. I believe he made somewhere around $5 million last year….and he’s 32 years old…..and his numbers may have been slightly inflated due to Bowe’s suspension. Why give a big contract to a guy who’s probably on the downside of his career?
On the other hand, he was definitely productive and probably has the best hands of the Chiefs WR.
All things considered, though, I think the Chiefs money can be better spent on other free agent pickups – make a play for a Malcolm Floyd or Vincent Jackson (unlikely I know), or improve the offensive line. A huge contract for Chambers just doesn’t seem to make sense for a young, rebuilding team.
I say keep him
I know thats alot of money, but having him and Bowe on the outside help’s. We need to find a W.Welker type slot guy, then next year look to draft a WR with deep speed and good hand’s. We might get surprised by this young guys too, after all they will have another year together with Cassel to get use to each other and improve.
This kid J.Shipley
Would be a great slot WR, and we could get him in the 3rd rd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnhauBSSm58&feature=fvst
hmm
Bowe is fine…He will come back. Chambers we need to come back. Copper needs to come back for ST, 3rd down situations. Long has the work ethic but will it be enough? Lawerence I love and we need to work on his routes and hands. He has that big play ability.
