How to acquire Vince Wilfork
How to acquire Vince Wilfork
Many of the Chiefs faithful want the KC Chiefs to acquire Vince Wilfork this offseason. That will be a big challenge, due to the CBA. There will be a steep price to obtain Wilfork, and I’m afraid Pioli will not want to pay it. After the jump I will explain how I would go about acquiring Wilfork, without giving up too much.
Step 1: Derrick Johnson finished his season strong, and his free agency stock is pretty high right now. Even though he had very little playing time, he made some big plays throughout the season. None bigger than his 2 interceptions for touchdowns during the season finale. An article came out recently that stated; many GM’s have DJ at the top of their free agent board. Pioli should place a 2nd round tender on DJ, and trade him to the first team who bites. I like DJ, and hold out hope that he will become the player I think he can be, but trading him would be best. Giving DJ a new contract, and hoping he lives up to the potential is not smart. Push him while his stock his high.
Step 2: Pioli should take notice of the Browns/Jets 1st round trade from the 2009 draft. The Chiefs should trade out of the 5th overall pick. Usually this is not an easy feat, but if Pioli is smart he will trade it at a discounted price. Swap 1st with a mid round team, and acquire their 2nd and 4th/5th. That would ultimately give us four 2nd round picks, and a cheaper 1st round rookie to sign.
Step 3: Take the previous two steps, and make a move for Wilfork. Last year, the Patriots franchised Matt Cassel, and traded him to the Chiefs, along with Mike Vrabel for a 2nd round pick. Pioli and Belichick should work a similar deal. It’s a well known fact that Belichick covets 2nd round picks, so why not entice him with a couple for Wilfork? The Patriots franchise Wilfork, and trade him to the Chiefs for two 2nd round picks. Making that move would still leave us with two 2nd round picks. If you think back to when Pioli traded TG for a 2nd round pick, he made a statement that still sticks in my mind, “That pick may turn into us acquiring another player”. I would love for that pick, to be a factor in us acquiring Wilfork.
2010 Draft:
- Trade DJ for a 2nd round pick
- Swap 1st rd picks with a mid round team, and obtain their 2nd and 4th/5th
- Draft Rolando McClain in the 1st rd
- Trade two 2nd rd picks for Wilfork
- Draft OC Maurkice Pouncey and FS Nate Allen in the 2nd round.
I know this is far fetched, and many of you will hate this idea, but I think it could work. I think it’s the most feasible way to acquire a dominant NT and still acquire talented youth in the draft. These moves would for sure help the Chiefs become the defense that we all desire. Also, the new draft format plays in our favor. With a whole extra day to make offers to teams, it will give Pioli more time to make something happen for the 2nd round. I know I have still yet to address the fact that Wilfork would love to play in Miami or Tampa Bay, but I don’t think either team will be an issue. There’s a good chance Tampa Bay will draft Suh or McCoy in the draft. Also, the Patriots would not trade their pro bowl NT to a divisional foe. Pioli and Belichick need to sit down and discuss some things. Make it happen, and get Wilfork in KC red! Let me know what you guys think. I don’t mind the criticism, just keep it respectful!

I like the idea of getting 2nd round picks.
But two second round picks in this draft is quite a bit, even for Wilfork. We could draft a NT, and address another need.
Yeah
If we made a trade I’d rather be ahead of Denver,Cleveland, or Oakland because they’ll all be looking real closely at McClain come April
This defense will be nice with
McClain, Hali, Wilfork, Dorsey, Jackson, Allen, and Flowers. I think Crennel could do some damage with those guys.
Oh I totally agree!
If somehow Kyle Wilson is there in the 2nd, id go with him, then Pouncey. And maybe Rolle in the 3rd/4th! Kyle Wilson will pair up nice with B Flowers. WRs would be shut down!
all I can say is: you sure "assume" a lot ...
far fetched isn’t even close … total fiction and unrealistic … much closer

hi, Mo!
5 minutes!!!
Why not trade first round picks and
send them DJ and we get Wilfork?

That is still giving up a lot.
I think these picks are gold. I would probably have to think about it for awhile but would maybe trade first rounders. There are a ton of options to acquire a N/T.

i like that idea.
but I think they should maybe throw in another pick somewhere
You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

Cassel can lead us.
That would probably be about right actually
the pick compensation for swapping 1st’s would be about a 17-18th pick and figuring DJ at best would garner a 2nd then we would in effect be offering a 1 and a 2nd without giving up a pick at all. The problem is in what we are left with at #22. Iupati is probably gone, I guess maybe Spikes, Robinson CB, Hughes OLB or something like that.

lol i was waiting for that first negative comment (applause)
So since you said I assumed alot, what in paticular did I assume? From my knowledge all I did was throughout a dream scenario…
A 2nd for DJ is good
Three 2nd rounders in this draft would be great. If the team were to pull that off I would just keep the picks and forget Wilfork. He is a good player, but the Chiefs need to get players at this time through the draft and wait to add free agents next season depending on the progression of the team. We need to remember that SP does not like big $ FA’s and for a good reason.
Trading out of #5 is great if it can happen. May have to lower the price a bit by asking for a swap and the other teams 3rd.
Yeah I agree Let's just use our 2nds on our picks
“Snacks” Hampton is still a possibility.
Really has the NT spot been so terrible that we couldn’t rotate some Youngsters throw there and develope them ourselves? Edwards will still be here and we have no idea if some of the lesser NT type players will come free in FA.

Keep in mind that SP
Made a play for Haynesworth. I think that if SP sees value in a player, He’ll make every reasonable attempt to obtain that player. I don’t thing he’s as frivolous as most people do.
I agree with that first sentence. I also don't put it past pioli to finagle another 2nd round pick somehow.
I think he has done his best to try and highlight some key players that would be valuable to another team in case of a trade option. However, I doubt anyone is giving a 2nd round for DJ. Not this draft anyway.
This is a very rich draft right now. DJ’s value will fall in relation to a draft pick this year. That being said, I will reiterate that I would not be shocked at all if Pioli finds a way to get another 2nd round pick. Just not that way.
I heard from a guy who knows this man...
that he may trade Krayfish….. :)

How would you know?
Are you Mr. Pioli himself? You can’t say we’re not until time has passed.
"Charles In Charge"

My problem with this is the assumption on what we can get for DJ and what we need to give up for Wilfork
We got a damn good deal for Cassel/Vrable, one that won’t fly twice. Wilfork is worth a lot more than both of those guys and I’m afraid he’s turning into a Haynesworth type character who just wants more. If thats the truth then Pioli won’t even bother looking into it.
I just dont see that NE drafted a NT if they are planning on signing Wilfork to a long term deal and I dont see them trading him to a division rival. So I think its a very real possibility that he ends up here. I would love to have him here but Im not in favor of a $100 million contract like Haynesworth got, nobody is worth that kind of money.
Why not if it structured properly
How much money will the Chiefs make over the next 6 years?

I still dont think any 1 player is worth that kind of money
Haynesworth didnt really make much of an impact for the skins this year did he, we could sign 2-3 really good players at different positions for that kink of money.
I know its a different position, but....
You know the Giants slipping into the cellar, and Osi Umenyoria isnt real happy there. He was benched the last 5 or 6 games. I bet he could go on the choppin block. They have a bunch of d ends already. How wouldnt this help our situation?
Would be nice upgrade at the DE rotation
too small? at 279 lbs for a NT:(

Hmmm. A 2nd-rounder plus DJ might be a sweet deal for NE. Thanks for provoking the thought, Larry.
I also like the idea of trading out of #5 by not being greedy about it (referencing your “at a discount” remark).
Interesting food for thought.
There are also Pickett, Hampton and Franklin. Not sure the Packers or Steelers would be willing or able to stretch as far as the Chiefs. Kind of expect the Singletary-led ’9ers to try to keep their hooks in Franklin. Singletary loves the speed of his ’backers, and knows he needs stout in the middle to get the most out of that speed. Packers, in particular, have Raji in the wings.
So although the topic, here, is Wilfork, alone, I see the Chiefs getting better (and I bet Edwards gets better, too, now that he knows what the job is and gets an offseason to continue working – and he worked very hard last year.) up front, because I expect one of those eggs to crack, possibly the one that looks least likely, down in SFO, where Singletary’s still kind of a wildcard, and apt to instigate the unexpected.
This scenario would probably never happen
but if it did I would not have a problem with it at all. I would like to keep DJ but anyone can be traded for the right price. In this particular scenario I don’t think giving up two 2’s is too much for Wilfork. The guy is an animal and he is only 28 years old. Plus, NT is huge in the 3-4. We need a great NT. Wilfork is dominant. He’ll make Dorsey, and Jackson a lot better, and he’ll eat up a helluva a lot of blockers. Paying the guy a lot of money doesn’t bother me either. He’s a proven commodity, and it’s not like we don’t have a crap load of salary space to work with. I understand the idea of wanting to draft a young NT and develop him, but who’s to say you still couldn’t draft a good NT in this year’s draft to develop behind Wilfork? The only thing I would hope in this scenario, would be that if we traded back we could still land someone like McClain or one of the top end LT’s.
What about S. Rogers in Cleveland....
Maybe Romeo makes a few connections there? Last i heard he was unhappy, and he’s got probowl talent.
There's so many many many behind the scenes things happening. And 32 other teams fighting for what's available.
For all we know, Pioli could gamble (slightly) and draft someone he KNOWS another team desperately wanted. Someone they wanted bad, but knew they wouldn’t get the chance at because they draft too far down the list.
He could use that player to acquire several more picks and then have a draft fest. This is a unique year to draft. Many college kid’s have enrolled in the draft because they fear that waiting could mean a rookie salary cap prevents them from this one last opportunity to make enormous money straight out the gate.
He could use that same player in a trade option. Who knows? I can’t wait to see what he does this year.
31 "other" lol

I would be happy if this all went down.
But on the other hand I’d rather get Hampton in FA and then have 4 2nd’s and a middle 1st and then draft a develpemental guy for NT in the later rounds.
"The dirtier the sound the best I breathe, I tried to do it all for you and you didn't do anything for me"
re
I agree with one thing : trading DJ. If he’s good enough to play or garner a 2nd round player, but Haley doesn’t want to play him : trade him.
As far as aquiring Wilfork I have mixed feeling about it. i don’t think there is any chance the Chiefs would trade draft picks, which is exactly what New England would demand. (good thing) And this is all assuming New England is going to let Wilfork go. An Incredibly stupid move on their part.
DJ's a playmaker. Easiest thing to do is keep building the D around him, and continue working him onto the field.
I think he stays healthier and makes fewer mistakes as the team around him improves.
And, yes. If there’s a 2nd-rounder in the offing, a trade doesn’t sound out of the question, either. I think the Chiefs could easily land clear starter-upgrades with every 2nd-round pick they can get their hands on.
Keep DJ and be careful with throwing away draft picks that could be used to acquire Boldin
3rd rd pick from this year and next. maybe a 5th rd pick from this year too.
Save one of the 2nd round picks to possibly trade for Anquan Boldin.
I dont think Bolden and Bowe would fit well together
Both receivers are possession receivers (hard to imagine that with Bowe’s drops) and neither has deep speed. They both are best at using their big bodies to shield a receiver, catch a 7-8 yard hook or slant and try to break a tackle to pick up some extra yards. They’re too much of the same player and wouldnt compliement each other…but on the other hand, if we also acquired a speed-demon WR to be slot guy and we played a lot of three-wide sets, then it may be ok.
Yup. Haley's passing game in AZ was mostly over the middle, though.
A courageous receiver with mad ball skills like Boldin would probably be a big help. And on any given play, there’s no reason why you couldn’t put that crazy-fast speed WR on the edge, and one of Boldin/Bowe in the slot. And while I’m a big pro-set fan, I bet more than half of the playbook is single-setback, and more than half of those are 3+ WR…
And from the improvement throughout last season that I saw, it seems to me that Haley ‘n’ Co. won’t find something quite serviceable in rounds 2 or 3. Last season, it was 6th round and below (Lawrence, Johnson) and waiver wire (Chambers, Long, Wade) where the Chiefs made ALL their hay. I have the strong sense that this is now a ballclub that can develop WRs, without breaking the bank on ’em.
Speaking of last year's draft
I am still completely effin’ puzzled over the Donald Washington and Colin Brown picks. It’s just like 2007 when we had an extra 5th from the Dante Hall trade and used it to take the first kicker off the board…..Justin Medlock! Over Mason Crosby? WTF?
Washington and Brown better develop into studs because I’m incredibly pissed that we drafted them over C Jonathan Luigs from Arkansas and DT Sammie Lee Hill (Hampton) in the 4th and over OT Jamon Meredith and G Duke Robinson in the 5th.
We had concerns a RT thus Brown
We took a flyer that still might pay off on a Redshirt sophmore CB with some concern over the depth at CB. I would imagine that our new HOF secondary coach might be able to help him out better than our old secondary coach/DC did.
