LaCanfora: 'Hearing the Chiefs are Most Likely Landing Spot for Weis'

At about the same time Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Romeo Crennel is "expected' to be hired by the Chiefs as the defensive coordinator, Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network tweets that Charlie Weis may not be far behind.

Continue to hear the most likely landing spot for Charlie [Weis] is as the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.

This meshes with what many folks have speculated since Weis was removed as Notre Dame's head coach.

To add a little credence to LaCanfora's report, Schefter also reports Weis will not be the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, a spot he was reportedly a candidate for.

This would be one more step to the Patriotization of the Chiefs. Both of these coaches were at one point coordinators with the Patriots.

As I said before, tomorrow is known as Black Monday, the day on which some teams part ways with members of their coaching staff.

Honestly is there a time slot that only

allows a team to hire within certain times?

Like do we have to wait for the offseason or can we just hire him now, fire Clancy and bring in Romeo tomorrow?

by readANDgold58 on Jan 3, 2010 11:04 AM CST reply actions

We could hire him now

But fire him 4 fours before a game?

i really do wonder if Pendergast would stick around…like if that was part of the plan all along because the Chiefs were reportedly after Crennel even after Pendergast wasn’t hired.

I would

have to believe that he knew all the circumstances when he agreed to become the d coordinator

by badassz1987 on Jan 3, 2010 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

But if I remember correctly

Pendergast wasn’t necessairly hired to be the DC, wasn’t he named coordinator a few weeks later? Maybe he had the understanding going in that the DC position was a 1 year gig.

Predictions:

Kansas City will not win more than four games in 2009
Kansas City will have a new OC and DC in 2010
Kansas City will win at least seven games in 2010

I believe we can move immediately if we want

We could technically move before if we wanted – but why before the season ends? Neither Crennel or Weis are under contract anywhere else, they’re “free agents” if you will – up for grabs. All we have to do is make it work on our end.

by Ochophosphate on Jan 3, 2010 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

sooooooo

With the news of Crennel (below) we are trying our best to reassemble New England’s old coaching staff?

You know, I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the ride. If it works out and we end up with a dynasty and multiple Super Bowl Championships then I’ll be ecstatic. If it doesn’t, I believe it will be an improvement over what we have now.

If Weis does become the OC

and if Berry is gone before the Chefs draft, would they consider drafting Claussen and trying to move Casssel to McD or somewhere else?

2009-10 Predictions:

2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB

The pats haven’t won jack without weis and romeo. And I would be all for charlie bringing his qb with him but it won’t happen. Just about to denver tech center

Predictions for 2009:

The Chiefs will regret cutting LJ

Bowe's numbers regress due to lack of decent QB play.

The D gets better in the second half but still is plagued by big plays

Cassel looks more like the guy Pioli almost cut in the '08 preseason instead of the franchise QB he hoped he would be when he traded him for

Chiefs 3-13

If Claussen and Weis were a package deal

I wouldn’t hesitate to scrap the Weis idea entirely. Claussen is a bitch and he’ll be a crap pro too. I don’t want anything to do with that moron. Weis, I’m a fan of as our OC, but I there’s no way I’ll ever support Claussen. Just because you hate Cassel doesn’t make Claussen a viable replacement.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Jan 3, 2010 12:06 PM CST up reply actions

I don't hate Cassel but Claussen already knows Weis's offense and can make all of the throws

Jury is still out on Cassel and all the drops this year aren’t all on the WRs. If Weis is hired as OC, Claussen would be the ideal QB. If Cassel plays like this next year, then it’s another lost season and a new search for a starting QB in 2011.

2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season

by Chiefs_KC on Jan 3, 2010 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

The problem with taking Claussen

other than the fact that he sucks both as a QB and as a person (which is one of the reqs for the “right 53” btw), is that we have bigger holes all over the team. EVEN IF Cassel isn’t the answer for the next 7 years, he is at least adequate as a starter (and would have a new dedicated OC/QBs Coach in Weis which should make an enormous difference in production) for the next couple years, as in: he won’t lose us games. It’s to be seen whether he can take the team on his shoulders and win them, but he at least won’t lose them.

Our D, though, needs a big-time safety with consistent game-changing ability and Berry is that. Claussen is questionable at best as a pro whereas Berry is an almost guaranteed home-run, not to mention Safeties in the first round are the most statistically “safe” picks of any position. QBs… well, the last Weis QB to hit the draft was Quinn and he has struggled to start for the Browns which really says a lot imo.

Berry > Claussen. I’d be willing to give up Weis just to keep Claussen out of the red and gold. That said, Weis w/o Claussen is a GREAT pickup.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Jan 3, 2010 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

I agree on Berry, but if Chiefs draft after TB he'll be gone

If you could trade Cassel for the Broncos 1st rd pick from the Bears (9-14th pick) . I think the Chiefs should consider it. Claussen is a lot better than Brady Quinn. I don’t care if Claussen has an ego or whatever if he can win games. Could say the same thing about Namath, Favre, etc (I’m not comparing Claussen’s talent to those guys, but their demeanor)

2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB

by Chiefs_KC on Jan 3, 2010 12:43 PM CST up reply actions

You're ignoring the part

where Pioli/Haley reject Claussen’s draft application because his “me first” personality doesn’t jive with the idea of a “Right 53.”

McD is happy with Orton apparently, no way he ditches the QB he has spent a whole season earning the confidence just to start all over again with a QB that would then have to learn his third system in 2 years. Besides, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rams took Claussen or even Bradford at #1 just because Bulger is that bad, leaving Suh for TB (which they’ll take over Berry) and Berry for KC. Lots will change with the Combine though so Mocks and trade scenarios NOW are kind of pointless.

Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...

by JHWK on Jan 3, 2010 1:03 PM CST up reply actions

I don't have an opinion on Classen's attitude but Weis

Knows the guy better than everyone. If he tells Pioli he’s the real deal and they could move Cassel to Denver for the 9th – 14th pick in the draft I hope they would atleast consider it. Cassel already knows McDaniels offence from New England and Orton is a FA

2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons

Weis’s Offense will be Haley’s Offense, that Weis is co-ordinating.

I think that is what makes them drops...

Is because they are on the wide recievers!

by readANDgold58 on Jan 3, 2010 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

By definition they are drops

But Cassel’s un-tight, wobbly spirals are harder to catch even when they hit the receiver’s hands

disagree...

Joe Montana won 4 Super Bowls throwing some of the lankiest passes I’ve ever seen.

My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:

1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.

I personally believe that crennel has been a done deal since last offseason his health just didnt allow him to. since his health would not allow his presence yet why not just find someone who can install a basic 3-4(clancy ?) then let crennel take a season off, stand back and watch what he has and what he needs.

wies – i think he is someone haley trusts unlike galey …. i actually had a customer in one of my family’s pizza places the day after wies was fired who told me he was wies’s
cousin and also told me that at that point charlie was almost positive he would be the O.C. for K.C. . i thanked him for his business and told him yeah right i might have to eat a lil crow on this one we will see

Well it's a big improvement over what we currently have. And...

the nice thing is that these guys will be here early this year. Instead of Pioli and Haley and everyone else coming in last second and rushing to fix things. This is all good stuff. Very exciting. And this is the beginning only.

So IF Weiss were to be hired

Does that mean our offense will have to change their language and scheme AGAIN?! Three times in less than a year?

I find it hard to believe an Offensive Coordinator as in demand as Weiss is supposed to be would be happy having to learn Todd Haleys scheme and language rather than bringing his own.

NO, It will be Haley’s Offense.

by dablueguy on Jan 3, 2010 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

Let me ask a question about Clancy...

If in fact as it was mentioned a possibility of, that Clancy was put in as DC to just fill the void for one year (wait on Romeo) and install the 3-4 this year, does it change your opinion of him as a coach since he didn’t have all the necessary tools (players) to make this successful? And would you be happy with him as a position coach next year, here in KC?

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

I think that was always the intention and I think Clancy had to have known that in the first place.

He was clearly not the first choice for DC and theres no way he didnt know it and despite that he came to KC anyway so I could see him staying on as a defensive assistant.
