Is the internet bad for the passion of our fandom?

I did a post earlier on the principle of "Who do we hate more" and got some pretty standard results although Krayfish only posted once and was nominated twice. You have to love the guy by now!

Anyways, one person seemed to get where I was headed on why I did the post at all.  Why do we let ourselves get so worked up over the mere "possibility" of drafting a young man whom none of us have ever met or seen play a game in person? Why does a persons religious beliefs have to weigh in on how someone feels about his ability to play a game?

It got me to thinking about the possibility that the internet is so powerful at providing us and everyone else, timely results of information that we use to have to wait days for, that now we have an almost piranha sense about our need for more information every minute, every day.

When I was growing up in Memphis back in the sixties, there was no ESPN, there was no internet, no cable shows and magazines only came out once a month.  The best show on TV was Wide World of Sports and that guy who was skiing down the takeoff ramp busted his ass at the beginning of every show! I can still here the announcers voice and think about Al Davis and Greg Oden every time, "The agony of defeat!"

Anyways, guys I'm pleading with ya, because there were some jabs taken at some people yesterday that probably could have been done without. I don't believe anyone on AP has ever done a post to enrage another poster or make fun of them or something they believe and I dont think that will ever happen.  But theres more to this life than hating on someone because of religion or politics and AP is not the place to discuss or chastise one about either.

More after the jump...

Star-divide

Two of the best debaters this site ever had was and still is UCrawford and ChiefDJ and man they could go at it 3000 words per reply, BUT they never attacked each other and always provided competent and reliable information.

Lets keep respecting each other and keep to the debate of competent information exchanges that we have been known for in growing this site to what it is today. Lets redirect our passion for our team in a positive and better way, not at each other, but to each other to make our visit(s) to AP brighter and more rewarding.

We are all Chiefs fans and I love everyone of ya!

Now on with the Krayfish-Tebow debate....lol

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

I've yet to see anyone say

they didn’t like Tebow because of his religion.

I think the MSM has painted him as a “holier-than-thou” character who walks around with a halo on his head… But I could really care less about that too.

People get riled up because they see him play at the college level and do well, so that automatically means he’s going to do well in the pros, right? Then when they are presented with reasons as to WHY he is a longshot to make a good pro (at the QB position at any rate), the popular rebuttals to the factual arguments are “upside. Leadership. Good morals and character. Oh, and he’s a great christian.”

Because we can see from the superstars of ANY sport, it’s important to have religion on your side (Tiger, Kobe, O.J., Ray Lewis, Donte Stallworth, and really pretty much any other star athlete in the history of EVER.)

I would prefer everyone be able to take a joke, move one, and agree to disagree. i don’t think anyone really thinks the Chiefs will draft him, and if for some reason they do, I don’t think we’re going to be losing any Chiefs fans.. and if we do, the we didn’t want you to begin with anyway.

Moral of my post here is… Really who cares? Go to the tittilating post of assets and calm your shit down. It’s the internet for gods sake.

Rolling eyes.

I’m seriously done with this debate, but not one “Pro-tebow” fan has ever said he would be a good QB because he’s a great Christian. Its the people that hate him for “flaunting” his religion that bring religion into the equation.

Now I’m done.

Seen them play in person?

No I have never seen Tebow play in person, or a lot of people that are suggested draft choices for the Chiefs

By the same token, I havent seen the Cheifs play too many games in person either. I dont see the difference between seeing someone on TV or in person.

I didn’t even realize religion was a part of the debate on drafting Tebow, but I guess once I see people going crazy in a thread I just tune out and check out other posts.

Nice post buddy

…pretty much explains why my postings went from quite a few a day to a rarity.
Now I just shake my head and skip over some of the topics/conversations.

It was pretty good when Chris and Joel/Primetime knew there were a few of us that could “police” ourselves. When it got close to getting out of hand, we’d just remind ourselves and folks we’re all on the same team….and jets cooled.

I think this is just a result of the site getting big.

Thank you for this post my man. Very good. It needed to be said.

I’m glad that Up’s wasn’t logged in last night or we would have probably both gotten banned. We would have been going toe to toe against another member on here for the way I was attacked. It’s private now. I won’t repeat names or any details. Just thought this post was good for putting things in perspective.

We are dealing with humans on the other side of the screen. These are people. There is never an excuse to berate and humiliate someone no matter what they do on here. It’s unacceptable, arrogant, selfish and rude. I have never flagged anyone ever. I have had plenty of reason though.

Some people get so mad on a personal level over the stupidest shit on here. Before you go try and degrade a fellow human and fellow fan, take a breath. Ask yourself if it’s really that important. Can I just not read the post? If I’m only going to be an asshole, am I any better than the person I’m condemning?

No member of AP own’s this site or anyone on it. We don’t have the right to belittle others over something like a football website. If you don’t understand somebodies passion, then don’t try. Just walk away. How much do you think a site like this means to J-man? He looks at us like extended family. People used to rag on him too until they read his profile. But profile or not. We do need to treat each other better. Because come gameday, we’re all we have.

Get to know the members

after a while you get to know how to deal with people. Some people have great information and picking their brains is really informative. Some people are really funny and you can have a blast joking around with them. Some people make really infomative arguments and a debate with them can benefit the entire site because of the well thought out arguments on both sides. Then again, some people are “hot heads” and if you find yourself on the other side of their opinion, you’re better off saving the effort, because they aren’t really listening to what you have to say. Stay away from posts or posters that you don’t like and let the mods take care of the rest. At any given time there are good guys (and girls) on here who you can talk Chiefs with, you just have to look for them.

There will be no beer and smokeage combined with postings lol. I turn into super idiot real quick like. But to your point. On a serious note. It’s coming to the point where the management are going to do one of their quarterly posts warning us to settle down and treat each other a little better or else. Yes, and every time I have to see one of those warnings, I cringe.

Joel and Chris are doing this in their spare time. Some forget that. Making them have to “play internet police” always annoys me because they shouldn’t have to go out of their way to make the reminder.

And I’d say a good half of my posts/comments are substance fueled. They ones that aren’t are the 4-page boring ones. =)

As much as I love AP

There are times I just don’t care. I’m not doing any mock drafts because the Chiefs are going to pick who they want and I just don’t care who they are until they are a Chief. I don’t care what Tebows views on religion are no matter what it is it has absolutely No effect on me or my life. Just because someone is a “celebrity” I don’t care what their political thought’s are or if they are in rehab or any other “Breaking News” Tiger got caught outside his wife, agent and him Who cares enough to have the media cover it every day for hours.

I have seen people here on AP get mad and disrespectful over a view over a player, and there’s no reason to. We are all fans, we may have a different view of the topic, but we are just fans. If something is said to upset you to the point you feel the need to insult someone for their opinion or choice of words, then you might need to take a step back and cool yourself, we all have opinions and not all will agree with yours or mine.

The point of any debate is to make your case in such a way to get others that are opposed to your opinion , to change their minds due to your skills of convincing them that your opinion is correct. However with that comes the other side of the coin, you must listen to their opinion with an open mind so they can try to convince you to see things their way.

The point is we ARE all Chiefs fans, and we should debate amongst ourselves but to the rest of the world we present a unified front, of loyal Chiefs Fans.

That's exactly why I stayed out of the "Case for Tebow" post.

I’ve voiced my opinion once (actually twice) on what I think of people hating Tebow for his apparent pious attitude. Opinions aren’t likely to change by some sudden revelation through an internet thread. More often than not it turns into a “your views are wrong” which leads to a “you’re a dumb ass for having said views”.

Good job reminding us that differing views are healthy, but attacking people because of their views is not. Rec’d Lanier.

Why is it...

That everyone who doesn’t want to draft him gets lumped into that group?

There are plently of good reasons to not want to draft him that only have to do with his play

I am a huge Tebow fan…I love the guy…obviously. I have my reasons…just like you have your reasons for being polar opposite of me.

I don’t think we will draft him…I don’t think his style fits Haley or Weis….doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want him personally. I am a realist on some things…lol.

I just don’t like people bashing his religious beliefs especially when that’s what I believe in. Just like you wouldn’t want some guy talking about your friend or family…

yeah but I don't think that was really happening.

Most people were just posting pictures to be funny, and those pictures didn’t say anything about a belief. I have no idea what “type” of christian he is and thus not sure on his specific beliefs about anything. No one was saying Tebow is wrong! God isn’t real! They were just saying Jesus should come play WR because he talks about Jesus so much.

Could you argue it was bad taste? Yeah there’s an argument there. But it definitely wasn’t attack his beliefs.

When it comes to the internet I just laugh about everything. Not very serious business.

People from both sides get lumped into the "you're wrong".... "you're a dumbass" group.

Tebow is a polarizing person, mainly because he’s such a strong advocate for Christianity. That causes a lot of problems that it probably shouldn’t. The media salivates all over Tebow because he practices good deeds because of his faith, so we get bombarded with a “not only is he a good college player, he’s also a good person” reputation that can be taken both ways.

To the far left you have people that are so adamantly against religion that they associate Tebow with just being another hypocrite fake and can’t wait for him to fail so that some piece of Christianity can (in their opinion) die with him.

To the far right you have people defending him at all costs because they in some way see him as a representative to their beliefs. So even when his football skills are brought into question, these far right members will take it way out of context and say “you’re just a hater because he’s a Christian”.

Most of us are in between. But it really only takes one person from each end of that spectrum to turn a thread into a religious debate.

My sentiments are likely to be summed up with one of these 2 quotes:

True, lol.

No, but I worked with a guy named Dave who was a big time fiscal-conservative and a social-liberal. I thought for sure we wouldn’t get along, because of his heathen ways ;-) but we actually had a pretty good relationship. We had a good understanding of each others views and evenly openly discussed them a few times, never once belittling each other. That’s where the real world and the internet get separated. There have been some things said on some of these threads that would never be said to the face of another person. If we all treat each other the way we want to be treated, it’ll all be good.

yeah I agree with that.

But thats what the internet is for…I use the internet as a way of truly speaking my mind instead of worrying about other peoples feelings and social do’s and don’ts (to some extent at least).

The last thing I would want would be to start monitoring myself because I’m worried about offending ANYONE that could read it.

Maybe I’m on to something. When in real life you know who is listening to you, you know who you have to be careful not to offend, and sometimes you even have the heads up of a personal connection and being more intune with what offends them. Anyone with an internet connection can read what I post on here, so there is no way I’m going to be able to avoid offending anyone.

So I’ll make the jokes I wanna make and hopefully the mods won’t try to kick me outa here =]

I am going to say this and then I'm done. I won't reply to any replies. So have at it. I dont' care. I'm not responding.

If you have not heard of “Michael Travesser”, look him up online sometime. That is what I was raised with. A super secretive cult. When I escaped, my obsession was to save my family from the cult. I chased that obsession right up to the doorstep of self ruination.
My spiritual mentor saved my life when he told me the following;

“Chris, God (whoever that is to you) only gave you the right to control one thing. You. No one else. Nothing else. Not even your kids. You can’t control them, you can only guide them. They, like everyone else, will do what they want regardless of your opinion.

Stop trying to be the director of the show. Stop trying to manipulate everyone and everything around you. Stop trying to force life to submit to your wishes. It can’t be done. You need to work with life and not against it.

So lose the ego. And the next time you let the actions of another person get in your head and piss you off, go look in the mirror. You’ll find the real problem right there looking back at you. Never let people rent space in your head unless their paying you rent.

You need to concentrate on taking control of the one person you actually have control over; YOU. The sooner you realize that you are not anyone else’s God and don’t have the right to try and force anyone else to do what you want them to do, the sooner you will know serenity.

KcFanatic made a great point earlier about how silly it seems for him to argue about things like mock drafts since you can’t control the outcome anyway. Pioli & co. will draft who they want to regardless of how much we stress ourselves out arguing over something that is out of our hands.

Same is true of AP. You can’t control anybody else on here except yourself. Regardless of how much belittling or berating or humiliating you do towards anybody else, you can’t change a thing. Chris, Joel & co. will do what they want with their site regardless. So it’s out of your hands.

I think it’s unbelievable that anyone would feel that they have the right to tell anyone else what’s right or wrong on AP. For example;

Let’s say I’m a disgusting loser. I have no friends. No wife, No kids. No job. I’m handicapped, I’m a fat gross slob. I’m horribly insecure and have no real friends in life. Let’s say this is the only place I can feel myself and feel accepted. Let’s say having friends on here is SO important, because it’s the only time people don’t judge me on my looks and my station in life. Let’s say I need the attention I get on here to feel like I’m worth something.

If you are such a pathetic human being, that you would trample on someone for wanting to be popular on AP or any site, because of the above situation, you need help. How dare anyone belittle someone else for acting in a way you feel is ridiculous.

How dare you belittle somebody because you don’t want them “giving shouts out” or acting like this is a “popularity contest” etc. You need to go take a long hard look in the mirror and ask the problem looking back at you, “Why do I let things I can’t control bother me so much”? What is MY problem? If that person I think is so pathetic for the way they act on AP has had such a hard life that they feel the need to act that way, why can’t I show some compassion?

You need to stop worrying about how bad you can degrade someone else and be grateful you don’t have those issues. I used to. So I get it. And I would never ever belittle someone for acting on those insecurities. It’s none of my business anyway.

If you hate the things that go on here at AP, start you own site. Then you can stroke your ego by making yourself feel good by controlling everything everyone does. Good luck with that site making a go of it.
