JOHNSON

Johnson in Kansas City...

Do we really want Larry Johnson back in KC?

No.

OH! DERRICK Johnson... YEAH! RE-SIGN HIM NOW!!  .... Right?

Right?

No. Not talking about him either.

I am talking about the forgotten Johnson. In all the hoopla of the Senior Bowl and upcoming draft, people have really only been talking about a few guys that have become household names (assuming your household is a football home). Yes, Suh, Tebow, McClain, Tate, Okung, Mays, Berry and Bryant have been the talk of this years draft class... As they should... And as a Chiefs fan, I'm thinking "BIG PICTURE". Lots of people focus on "Ok! Let's see who my team's #1 draft pick will be this year..." Not I my fellow Chiefs fans. Not I. I, R2J (Formerly known as ROC 27) am most looking forward to Round #2 and 3. Why? Because not only do we have 3 picks there, but  that means we're closer to drafting the "forgotten Johnson"...

Star-divide

With Jamaal Charles emerging as a prime back in this league, the Chiefs now need to implement a little  of the 2008 New York Giants. There you had Derrick Ward, Brandon Jacobs, and Ahmad Bradshaw. The New York Giants were able to contain Earth, Wind, and Fire on a single football field every Sunday.... There was no question that the 2009 Chiefs were short-manned when it came to the RB position. Which, put Charles in a position to carry the entire load. We couldnt depend on Savage to make plays or stay healthy and the same went for Williams, Battle, and Smith. And we just let go of the only RB this teams has come to know in the last 5 years in Larry Johnson.

So, what now? There is absolutely no way that we head into next season putting the same pressure and responsibility on Jamaal Charles. We need to learn from our mistakes (i.e. Larry Johnson's NFL record for Most Carries)... We have our "Wind" with Charles and we NOW have a GREAT opportunity to get our "Fire".

Stafon Johnson. People have forgotten about this young man since his horrible in unfortunate accident in the USC weight room. But if you remember correctly, Stafon Johnson was a force to be reckoned with. With a rare combination of speed, power, and elusiveness, Johnson has what it takes to not only play in this league, but succeed. Personally he reminds me of an Ahmad Bradshaw. How do we come up on this kid? Easy. The Chiefs are carrying the #36th and 50th picks (that's the 4th and 18th pick in the 2nd Round, for the slow person). We have a HUGE chance to pick up a position of need. I don't know about you guys, but I consider RB a position of need. I know we have many needs, but some of those CAN and will be addressed through Free Agency.

Stafon Johnson's stock dropped after the accident, but is he missing a leg? Or a hand? No. Johnson's stock will rise and rise fast after both the Senior Bowl, Combine, and USC Workouts. He is and will be a great player in this league and I can only hope that Scott Pioli, Todd Haley and Charlie Weis will see it my way.

We need a RB

I would prefer a similar back to Charles, I would presume Fire is similar :)

ESPN (I think) did a good interview with him about the incident. It’s worth looking up. I’d look it up for you but I’m too lazy tonight.

the sound of that story always makes me not wanna ever work out again haha

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

I like the thought of another young RB...

look at Carolina with Williams and Stewart. Kolby Smith had nice flashes, but either he wants to be let go, or he was a product of our O-line at the time. Weis might not be a running guy, so a veteran could fill the position. I hope they grab the best availables on either side of the ball….we could use them all.

by Sea of RED on Jan 28, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

Johnson

seems too similar to jamal running style…….we need a big back like brandon jacobs…..or legarrette blount in the later rounds

Bradshaw didnt seem to get much action when ward was still there…….I think it was more just jacobs and ward then when ward left bradshaw filled his role…..soo we need a big bruiser similar in stature too jacobs

by cassel4prez on Jan 28, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Rise?

To the second, NO. He got in a life threatining injury and teams will look for other answers at RB. He will be there in the 4th and 5th rounds. Which is exactly where I would like to pick him up. Another RB I would like to get is either Joique Bell or Legarrete Blount. Both are good all around backs with some power.

by Green-Monster on Jan 28, 2010 8:25 PM CST reply actions

Blount would be great

But I think Johnson has more upside. And just watch… The kid’s stock will rise when it’s all said and done.

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

Exactly

My point his stocks gonna rise and I’d rather pick up another need like NT,SS,ILB,OLB,OT,C,OG,Slot Receiver, and KR. Those are who we should target this year. Another RB is just to much of a luxury that we can’t afford as a “rebuilding” franchise. I think that as long as Kolby is just getting 5 carries a game that he shouldn’t get injured to badly although he does Croyle-syndrome so who knows.

by Green-Monster on Jan 29, 2010 4:03 AM CST up reply actions

Pass on a RB this year

Keep Williams and savage as our backups. Draft Bradford out of USC next year. Incredibly fast and powerful. RB isn’t exactly a position that needs to be addressed through this seasons draft.

We don't want to kill Charles

and I am not sure we have that guy on the roster to keep Charles from every down duty

Agreed on not killing JC

I don’t see where having another running back with a similar style is a problem. I don’t have a problem with 2 backs playing with each averaging 5+ yards a carry. If you need a 1 yard back it is time for the current fullback or Dorsey, Jackson, Hali, etc. to step up to the plate and learn how to take a hand off and let the laws of physics run their course.

Yeah...but we beat the donkeys like a rented mule.

back in the day we would put the team on preist’s back or larry’s and they always ended up with a serious injury

I don't like 3 Back Committees.

Basically, because it can a) upset someone of the 3. b) it takes away from 1 or 2 of the others. and c) because it takes away the numbers and productivity from jc. I know winning is important but it’s also nice to have nice/big numbers and stats and be the best there is. that’s simply because i like numbers. and of course we need a back to supplement charles and take some carries for jc to get a breather and such.

Jamal Charles won't last

Ideally Charles would get 15-20 touches a game. I think Kolby Smith can spell Charles for an addition 5-10 carries a game and we would have a a decent running game.

Jackie Battle sucks.

Williams is rank and Savage is a GREAT RB…. On the 3rd string. I love Kolby Smith, but the kid just can’t stay healthy.

I do love Savage

I more or less feel the same way about Kolby Smith as you do Battle. I thought Haley was pretty high on him (Battle) early in the year but he got hurt or something. Or did he just end up sucking so bad we cut him loose? I dunno. :-\

No Battle got hurt.

Savage got hurt, but he was tugged to the bench during the game in Oakland for not making the plays he needed to. And again, Kolby Smith got hurt. I think Kolby could be a complementary back, but god damnit, he can’t stay off the injury list.

I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin.

I know it

The few times he’s been in there at full strength he runs strong. Has decent vision and hits the hole with authority. But he’s as brittle as Croyle.

I still have hope for savage. I love that guy. Give him the right opportunities and I think we can have our own home grown version of Sproles. Little dude runs mean!

I think we all agree we need someone

to spell Charles whether it is a Feature or a complementary (similar) type back. He is still a needed guy on the Chiefs.

The type of running back that we need is one like Kolby Smith...

unfortunately ever since he has been injured at Louisville he has had reoccurring knee injuries.

I personally would rather us grab LenDale White in free agency than grab another running back late in the draft. It is good to highlight guys like this that are available, as it is nice to see whom ‘might’ be the next star in the NFL.

Go Chiefs!!!!

Positives i hear about Stafon Johnson are

He is good between the tackles and has a knack at the the goal line and short yardage, also great in pass protection and good hands catching.

by km230015 on Jan 29, 2010 7:05 AM CST reply actions

Stafon Johnson has all the talent in the world

The fact is, though, that he wasn’t exactly tearing it up for USC prior to his accident. He was sort of lost in the logjam of a zillion running backs for the Trojans, and didn’t produce anywhere near the level that Reggie Bush or Lendale White did. If his injury checks out, terrific. He’s a great kid with great talent. But I wouldn’t draft him in the second round, as the OP seems to suggest. I guess I wouldn’t gripe too loudly if he were the pick in the third, but I personally wouldn’t feel very tempted until the fourth or later.

adding to the stable

Good. I agree, we need another RB to protect JC. If I had my druthers, it’d be Ryan Matthews, FSU, ‘cause he’s a local boy. I’d get to see more Chiefs’ stuff on local TV. However, since Maycok has Matthews as his #1 RB, he’ll be long gaone by the 2nd round. I could live with your guy.
