Chiefs, Other 3-4 Teams Talk With Tennessee's DT Dan Williams
The Kansas City Chiefs are one of a handful of teams that have spoken with Tennessee defensive tackle Dan Williams, according to Tim Yotter of Scout.com.
The 6'2", 329 Williams has drawn the attention of the San Diego Chargers, Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos as well - all 3-4 defense teams.
Williams, like Terrence Cody (minus about 40 pounds), is expected to play nose tackle should he be drafted to a 3-4 defense.
Game tapes from Tennessee show he can obviously stop the run but it's his pass rush abilities that scouts want to see. I first heard some concerns of his pass rush from Pat Kirwan of Sirius NFL Radio yesterday and he recognizes that.
"My junior year when I was thinking about coming out," Williams told Yotter, "I know that was one area I really needed to work on before I came out. I think I improved for the most part and I’m going to continue to work on it."
Williams says he's heard he'll be taken anyway from the late first round to the second round. The Chiefs, of course, have an early second round pick.

We need a nose tackle
Whether we get one in free agency or the draft, we need one. Sounds like this guy good be a solid option for us. And Im not to concerned with the his pass rushing skills, as long as he can make a big hole in the middle for a LB or take some pressure off Dorsey and Jackson.
Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!
Definitely
As long as he can collapse the middle of the pocket and require a double team I would be more than happy. The LBs should be making the sacks in a 3-4 anyways.
That said I would really like to see us address the O-line with our 2a draft pick.

i don't know
while a OL pick at 2a wont piss me off, i think we can address it with our 3rd and achieve the same results.
Seriously mates, when have I ever been sarcastic?
Oh and in case you were wondering, that hug offer is still there when you are ready UC :p
Drafting D Line Again...
My concern would be the time it takes for a NT to develop if we draft one. I’d be fine drafting OL with our first, or safety with our first. Then taking NT in second if we haven’t picked one up by then. I just hesitate to draft another position that takes “a couple years” to develop. But if that’s how they want to do it. I’m fine with continuing to draft in the trenches early. Might be boring, but I think it’s a recipe for long term success ultimately.
I will say this, I hope we pick up a safety or a WR in the first two rounds as a playmaker.
agreed
I would prefer a FA NT… then a mid round pick like Troup
I know I mentioned Cody below, but I would really like Golden Tate in the 2nd, or McCluster in the 3rd
Also, don’t sleep on Nate Allen at FS

I couldn't agree more stags. Are you on the McClain bandwagon for the 1st?
The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far is as needed?

Berry or McClain
Leaning toward McClain now, with a safety later
McClain / Nate Allen / Myron Rolle
Or
Berry / Eric Norwood / Cam Chancellor

I would take option A please....
….but don’t you think we should address the o-line with one of our 2nd rounders?

that scenario
Allen would be 2b, rolle in the 4th or 5th
OG in the third (mike johnson or jd walton) or the 5th (render, black, larsen or jerry)
Hoping for Tate or Iupati with 2a, or the best OT available if both are gone

I like Johnson a lot,
In the NC game he was dominating on the run, but quite a few times he got driven back on passing plays. I’d love Iupati, even trading up a few spots with one of our 5ths. A starting guard that wants to try left tackle, if it works out thats great, and if not, he’ll start at guard, and still have the third…we’ll get good players, hopefully starters. McClain, Iupati, Allen, not bad for the top 3 picks.
IdahoChief?
says that Iupati is strong and tough yet not the brightest.
I want the LT to be pretty quick on the uptake.
Sorry if I misread which Idaho fan is not entirely inpressed with Iupati.

Man-Crush..
I admit it. Next to MIZZOU, I’ve been a ‘Bama fan since the days of DT. I really like this kid and love the way he commands respect. I’d take him over Berry in a heartbeat…
Things to get the Chiefs back on the winning side of football:
1. Haley resign as offensive coordinator or do the following;
a. Feed JC more
b. Take the cuffs off of Cassel and let him air it out
2. Fire Clancy "Calls" Playslikeass

I would like to put McClain @ 1
with Cody at @ 2
maybe, maybe Arenas at CB
That would give us some Champion-like flavor in the D

Berry Or Mclain.
I still don’t think Berry is gonna be around at five. I wouldn’t mind taking him, But, Man, McClain would be a beast inside. And then imagine what this Williams kid could do. I’m salivating, thinking about how scary the pass rush would be.

re
We’lll have to draft one now or draft one later. i don’t think I would mind having a D-line really coming into it’s own so we could at least have one unit that can play NFL football.
But to be honest I think their getting a look at a player like williams to see if he’s worth passing up on Berry or Okung.
by tenacious rdc on Jan 28, 2010 12:57 PM CST up reply actions
I would trade down and take him in the first
..I also don’t think the current regime cares or should care what or where drafted prior.
Good point about draft placement
Just hard as a fan to continue to draft similar spots and see them not pan out or not seeing them pan out yet etc….Trading down this year would be silly since the depth of this draft is supposed to be very good for the first couple rounds. With so many holes, we need to pick up those 2 second round players. IMO
I’d also be excited if we took LB with first pick…
How is trading down silly if this is a deep draft.
Seems that trading down is more attractive when the draft is deep as you can get top shelf talent later. Trading down would be silly in a thin draft, in those cases teams would be looking to move up to get one of the few high end players.
No, My mistake...
Thought he meant trading up. Trading down would be fantastic as always…..My bad my bad!!!
round 1
Should be Berry
Round 2 will be a guard and nt or lb
Round 3 will be a nt or lb depending on which we take in round 2
We come out of the first 3 rounds with S,G,NT,LB
by Chiefwanka on Jan 28, 2010 9:23 AM CST via mobile reply actions
i will say it
I’d rather have Cody.
That being said, neither of them should be KCs first round pick, regardless of trade down.
I watched Williams in their bowl, and he looked very ordinary, and TN got runover.
At least Cody anchored the best run defense in the NCAA, and he’s a unique talent. Willliams looks like every othee mediocre NT, and might not be any better than Ron

I thought McClain anchored that defense...
One of the reasons I don’t want either of them. They bothed played for the nation’s best D and the top shelf talent around them may be making them look better than they actually are. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
I'll take both
McClain in the first, Cody in the 2nd :)

McClain, Cody, Allen.........
would be something real serious for this defense!
by Hail2DaChiefs on Jan 28, 2010 10:22 AM CST up reply actions
They were two major pieces
If you watch tape on McClain and Alabama’s defense, you will see that it is a great defense both in the sense that all the individual players play their part and play great ‘team defense’, but also because of players like McClain that are just monsters talent-wise.
McClain is great, for one, because he is so intelligent AND instinctive. He can diagnose the offense pre-snap, adjust the WHOLE DEFENSE as far as positioning and playcall, then when the ball is snapped he almost always gets to where he needs to be in a big hurry. Add to this that he goes 6’4" 260 and probably runs a sub 4.7 and is versatile enough to play the run, blitz from the inside and outside, and play extremely well in space and pass coverage, and you’ve just got a d-coordinators’ wet dream.
Cody is certainly much more limited in the number of things he can do. He’s only a run stopper, but he’s DOMINANT at it. Not because he’s so fat that it makes him hard to move, but because he is immensely strong and demands a double team most every play. IF he gets serious about his weight and focuses on being in much better condition, he can be even more effective because he will not tire as quickly and be able to perform more consistently over the whole game.

Pair him up with McClain as the "Coach" that will ride him like no other and you got something

Okung … then maybe Williams in 2nd
Cody won’t fit in the locker room door … Berry? nah … McClain maybe BUT we so need a beast on the OLine … hell, we need a few beast types on the OLine

I am all for picking up Williams with a 2nd rounder.
I don’t care about him not being an elite pass rusher. That’s a 4-3 tackle’s job, not a 3-4 nose tackle’s job. I just want the run to be stopped.
If we can trade down (always doubtful from a top-5 position)..
..Even to somewhere around #10, Dan Williams should undoubtedly be our pick. I’d be tempted to take him over McClain if Okung and Berry are off the board already.
Williams is the premier 3-4 NT in this draft. Mount Cody is obviously second, but significantly behind. After that there is a significant drop off of talent, and more than likely all of the available NT FA’s will be tagged by their current teams.
It is imperative that the Chiefs get an elite talent in the first couple of rounds in this draft if we expect to improve this year, and Williams is one of those talents. Eric Berry is one of those, and arguably Russell Okung is one of those talents as well.
IMHO, I’d rather nab Brandon Spikes with one of our 2nd rounders than McClain with our 5th. The value is phenomenally better.
I know that some draft sites are saying Williams will go anywhere from mid 1 to early 2, but I just can’t see a way in which he gets past all of the 3-4 teams drafting in the late first round. If we want him, it’ll have to be in the first.
