Bills Coach Gailey Hires Several Former Chiefs Assistants

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey, most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs, has dipped into a familiar pool as he puts together his coaching staff.

Star-divide

As we previously told you, the Bills announced the arrival of Curtis Modkins as the offensive coordinator. Modkins was with the Chiefs in 2008 and has connections with Gailey dating back to Georgia Tech. Coincidentally, Modkins took the same job Maurice Carthon left in Arizona.

They also announced the arrival of Joe D'Alessandris as offensive line coach. He was one of two Chiefs assistants that did not have their contracts renewed following the season.

Also headed to the Bills is Kevin Patullo, who served as an offensive assistant and quality control coach prior to the Haley regime.

The Bills have yet to hire a defensive coordinator so it'll be interesting to see if that hire comes with Chiefs ties as well.

(Note: Also hired is Bob Bicknell, who was on the Chiefs staff.)

Bills announced it as Bob. The Chiefs tight ends coach.

Well crap

Bicknell was a very versatile coach…I liked the guy….I think he has lots of potential. He has been OC, TE, and Oline coach.

He's a good coach, I suspect (our line and TE's were hit or miss, mostly miss, while he was here).

But my guess is his family connections and coaching connections pulled him back East and with Gailey.

Gailey is trying to build a dynasty in Buffalo, he's using the Chiefs blueprint for sucess!

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far is as needed?

Did Charlie Pendergast get fired or is he still with the team, just not as DC?

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 1:39 PM CST reply actions

He never worked with Gailey anyways so it’d be surprising if he all the sudden comes to Buffalo, anyways.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

My bad. They worked in Dallas together so Pendergast still could be a possibility.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

He worked under Gailey in Dallas.

Dunno, but if you want Clancy Pendergast, by all means you can have him.

I’ll drive him to the airport and even pay for his ticket.

Tim Krumrie....

Surely Gailey hires him

If he takes Clancy, he'd better take Krum too. Misery loves company.

We really shouldn’t be wishing these two on Buffalo…I think even Chan has better sense. Right?

I hear the Bills

Will make a play for Troy Smith….would be awesome if he got Thiggy back and installed a spread and actually did good.

Meh. Donte Whitner is the only guy who has said anything about Smith. They went to high school and college together so I don’t put a lot of stock in his opinion. Oh and he’s a mediocre safety. Why should I trust his judgment of QBs? LOL

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 1:56 PM CST up reply actions

Y'know what? That'd be pretty cool actually.

If Gailey runs his pistol/spread in Buffalo, instead of his power zone POS offense (what he ran at Georgia Tech), Smith could make some real noise. He’s like Thiggy, but can actually throw out of a conventional offensive set.

No offense intended,

But I know that as a Chiefs fan, if a rebuild was started by hiring an O coordinator to be HC that was fired from a team that went 2-14, and he brought a bunch of assistants with him from said organization, I’d have a hard time getting behind them.

Good luck to you. Any word on Gailey targeting Tebow in teh draft because of his wildcat skills?

This is the team owned by Ralph Wilson. We’ve come to expect crappy hires like this, where Bills-fans just feel like they’re being pissed on by the front office. What can you tell us about D’Alessandris? Was he your assistant O-line coach or..?

"The one commonality in both places (Oakland and Buffalo) is an aging owner who keeps interfering too much. Ralph Wilson continually butts his nose in the football operation and tells the team who to draft"

Yeah assistant oline coach

Not able to tell much as an asst….but he was with Gailey at GTech for years….

I would say he will make a pretty decent coach in the NFL. He has some good experience now.

Thigpen and Tebow are both popular names over at Rumblings. We have no indication as of yet what his plans are.

I’m not upset about the “fired by the Chiefs” thing. Haley was going to run the offense so why did they even keep Gailey around in the offseason?

I’m not thrilled by the Gailey hire but I’m far from mad about it. I’m behind him as my sig attests. But I’d be behind any Bills head coach.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Gailey

Has only done good things as a HC. He has never truly had a good chance at having some solid years to develop his own team. He did very well with us…looking at our roster at the time. He doesn’t seem to be afraid to change things around that are not working….

I think the Bills made a good hire for now and they have a great guy in Buddy Nix to stock the roster with good talent.

That's understandable,

I know what it’s like to be behind a team no matter what =)

And don’t get me wrong. Gailey probably wasn’t a bad hire. IMO, there was A LOT of coaching issues with the Chiefs in 2008. Chan wasn’t one of the issues, he was one of the bright spots. He took a limited talent pool and managed to make it masquerade like a respectable offense. I’m just a little curious as to the reaction of the majority of Bills fans. As I said, hiring that many coaches from a floundering franchise has to be awfully suspect.

And, I'd like to see them get Thiggy and start him.

It may sound cruel, but I’d like to see the Thigpen/Gailey experiment continued… just not by my team. It was entertaining.

The only snafu is that he’s on the Dolphins. Being in the same division usually isn’t a good thing for trades.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

True that.

But you never know… he’s only a 2nd or 3rd string QB.

Alas! If only we had held onto Thiggy for another year, we might have gotten more value for him. (We only got a 5th round pick)

Whatever the case...

You can be sure that whoever your QB ends up being, Gailey will play to their strengths, and the strengths of the offense.

I’d like to see Fred Jackson have a true breakout year.

That has been the attitude I’ve been taking. People seem to think Gailey is this old guy who is out of touch and won’t change for anybody. They forget about the Pistol he ran in KC. Yeah he likes to run the ball. We have Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch so why is that a bad thing?

by MattRichWarren on Jan 27, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Right

There’s nothing about this hire that is sexy by any means. But there isn’t really anything bad about it either.

And could turn out to be a blessing.

And you guys have a good bit of talent on that offense

If the OLine can remain healthy, which has been a problem the last couple of seasons.

Personally, I’d love to have Lee Evans on my team.

by ArrowSpread on Jan 27, 2010 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Basically, he’s going to coach his offense to suit the talent on the team. That’s why I hope he goes and gets a legit DC…someone with fire…The offense won’t set records (at first) but it will be well-coached.

If Beast Mode and FJ run for 2000 yards next season, especially if it leads to a ton of play-action and deep balls to Evans, those haters will be back on the bandwagon in no time.

No they will go ballistic when they trade for Mike Vick.

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far is as needed?

by BigRedChief on Jan 27, 2010 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

If Chan mixes it up in BUF like he did (by necessity) here, Vick might be the ideal QB.

Of course, there’d be a lot of people upset by that transaction. And Vick may not have the game he had three, four years ago either.

Gailey did wonders with a nothing offense in 2008, and probably just wasn’t a good fit with Haley here. Oh well…I DO think that, if the talent is brought in and if he hires a good DC, Chan might surprise Bills fans.

What do you Bills guys

Think of George Wilson? I went to the same HS as him, my brother knows him and was in the same grade. Actually my brother beat him out of a TE position in I think it was Middle School…

He comes back to Paducah often for the kids and community support. Really good guy.

Really good guy. Had a great year this year as our secondary got banged up and he got some time there. Always great on special teams, too.

He was my fifth Best Bang for the Dollar Bill this year:

5. George Wilson ($1,015,590) Buffalo’s best-dressed player was also a special teams captain and started 12 games, with injuries to safeties and linebackers changing the makeup of the defensive backfield. He tallied four interceptions and 103 tackles, both numbers good enough for second on the team.

IMNSHO ...

you guys will be pleased with Gailey and what he does for the team … as noted above: he’s mold the offense to best fit the talents of the available players .. his offenses aren’t the “I’m gonna roll over you and I dare you to stop me” kind … more the “I’m way smarter than you are and I dare you to outcoach me” type … usually, Chan comes out on top

give him a few years and some freedom to get talent and I think the Bills could be looking very, very good
