2010 Chiefs Offensive Free Agent Possbilities

Plenty of draft talk going on here at AP but I havent noticed too much on the free agency side. Free agency is actually closer and too me is just as important as the draft and maybe even more interesting. I have compiled a list of free agents that could help out the Chiefs.

Star-divide

Quarterback

Chadpenningtondolphins_medium

via sportscrzy.files.wordpress.com

Brodie Croyle-Yes, I said it keep Brodie in KC. Croyle already knows how things are ran in KC and is a very good backup even if he didnt hack it starting in KC.

Chad Pennington- Chad will be coming off an injury filled season since he was on the IR for the Dolphins. Pennington has shown to be a dependable and accurate QB in the NFL and would be an awesome backup if the Chiefs did not retain the services of Brodie Croyle.

Charlie Batch- Batch has been in the league for a long time and would be a good vet in the QB lineup that has been to many big games and would be a dependable backup.

Running Back

1193611610_1436_medium

via cache.boston.com

Kevin Faulk- Mr. 3rd down convertor himself. Faulk has always had the knack for helping convert 3rd downs and is a big back that would compliment Jamaal Charles. Faulk also has a connection with the Chiefs (Pioli and Weis).

Lendale White- Lendale is a big physical back that would help make the ultimate one two punch between him and Charles.

Chester Taylor-Taylor is another back that would help Charles by bruising up the defense. Taylor also has some pretty good hands and would be a deffinate receiving threat from the backfield.

Wide Receiver

Chris-chambers-chiefs-20091108_zaf_cq1_052_medium

via www.everyjoe.com

Chris Chambers- Its that simple bring him back. Chris was getting some chemistry going with Matt Cassel and was the Chiefs most productive WR. Let Chambers come back and continue what he started.

Steve Breaston- Breaston is a restricted free agent but if Im Todd Haley I do what I can to get Breaston here in KC. Breaston is a young WR that has produced since day 1 and could come to KC seeing that he has ties with our head coach.

Brad Smith-Smith would be a big impact on the Chiefs. Brad could come play in the wildcat formation seeing that he is an ex QB and is very fast. Smith runs the wildcat for the Jets a lot. Brad would also be good returner and would help out the Chiefs Special Teams.

Tight End

439x_medium

via cache.daylife.com

Anthony Fasano- Fasano would bring competition to our tight ends and has decent hands and is an above average blocker.

Tony Scheffler-Tony has soft hands and can be a weapon in the Chiefs offense.

Ben Watson-Watson is another option at tight end I bring Watson up because of his obvious connections to KC.

Offensive Line

Display_image_medium

via cdn.bleacherreport.com

Logan Mankins-Very solid blocker with connections to the Chiefs staff.

Kevin Mawae-Mawae would bring a vet to the Chiefs offensive line while we groom a young center to eventually take over the spot.

Rudy Niswanger-Resign Rudy for depth and versatility.

Croyle and Chambers. I think those two will be back. Signing either Taylor or White at RB would be great for this team.I dont know if the Titans will let White go, but if they do, id prefer him over Taylor for the age reason. at TE, IF the Fins let Fasano go. The Chiefs should do everything to get me. He is a great blocker and is a red zone threat. would be good for #7. WR, obviously Breaston is a possiablity because of Haley, and if we can get him he would take some presure of off Bowe and Cassel would have @ good young recivers to throw too. OL, another obvious for Mankins, great blocker and connections. would be huge for the team

Pass on Lendale

He’s a me first kind of player who openly feuded with Chris Johnson about being the no. 1 back. He would be coming in as a backup/3rd down back which I doubt is what he wants. Besides that what did he accomplish this year?

Good post, and I know you’re not necessarily advocating for any players in particular, but I have seen a lot of pro Lendale White voices on the AP. That kind of talk will keep Pioli from reading!

by Ray Brown on Jan 26, 2010 10:02 PM CST reply actions

Totally disagree. And completely wrong analogy of White.

First off, you WANT players who want to start and play every game. You need those guys’. Anyone remember Ricky Williams comments during the season? Ronnie Brown goes down and now Ricky is the starting RB. They interviewed him about how he felt taking on the roll of starter and he said he didn’t want it. He preferred the role of backup. It was “comfortable”. What??

Second. Chris Johnson feuded also over being the starter. It takes two to feud. Johnson was as much if not a bigger crybaby over getting the starting reps as was White. White is by far the greatest RB that isn’t a starter in the NFL. He could start for any team and turn them around from day one. He’s an animal and can’t be stopped in the redzone. He’s exactly who we need.

We need a guy that is like Boldin. He can’t stand sitting on the sidelines either. He complains and bitches when he isn’t in the huddle. No one complains about that. His coaches love him for that reason. His want to play, his love of the game and his competitive nature. Those make you great. Lindell white is GREAT!!

What weight issues?

Are you saying that the fact that he lost 20 pounds last year is a problem?

I gotta roll with Kray yet again on this one. White is a STUD! I would LOVE to see us get him. Charles and White would be the best rushing tandem in the NFL w/o question.

Who cares what Ricky Williams said in the off season? He had the tenth most yards after being the number one for only half of the season. I’ll take that out of a number two RB regardless of what he says.

Like when LJ publicly cried over playing time?

You do want your players to want to be the starter but you don’t want them running to the media and bring more scrutiny to the team with public comments.

To me the life span of a RB in the league is around 4 years. I would rather draft a player this year or role with Javarris Williams as the back up.

by Ray Brown on Jan 27, 2010 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

White Wants To Start

If he wants to start why go to KC??? He could go to GB, HOU, NYG, DET, WAS, PIT, NE, SEA and have a better chance to start right away. He will not come and play for a team that has a C. Johnson Clone.

we should take care of most OL and TE through free agency

that way we can focus our draft on defensive players and WR through most of the draft

POW!! right in the kisser

I would like to take care of the OL in FA to (this year)

TE i don’t know if we need to worry about at all.
Mankins, Mawae, or the kid out of tennessee would all satisfy the O-line needs.

Unless we wanted to go all in on upgraded O-line personnel. Lots of Tackles, Guards, and Centers in this draft. Depends on what the priorities are with the coaching staff.

I really don’t know what I want to do :) I surrender, give up, throw in the towel, and No Mas

No CBA

Will limit who we pick up in FA this year. I know for a fact that most of the guys you mentioned will not be leaving their teams without us losing draft picks in the process. Lendale White, Steve Breaston(though you already mentioned it), Brad Smith, Anthony Fasano, Tony Scheffler, and Logan Mankins will all be RFA next year and we’d have to give up draft picks to get them. Sad because I’d love to see all those guys in Red next year :(

by Green-Monster on Jan 26, 2010 10:55 PM CST reply actions

i'd like to see

Watson and Mankins come aboard. They will both contribute immediately and help build the morale of the youngers players!

Warriors come out and play

by jrcnc on Jan 27, 2010 7:28 AM CST reply actions

A lot of mixed emotions about Watson out there. Which is kind of weird I guess.

I mean, I would bet the deed to my house that if ANY current Chiefs TE was being talked about as a possible trade to ANY other team in the NFL, those fans would be pissed. We don’t have a single TE that any other team would want. Especially the fans. They would hear Chiefs and TE in the same breath and they would be blogging on SB about how they would hate it if our TE went there. Noboby likes our players.

by krayfish on Jan 27, 2010 7:38 AM CST reply actions

What about Eugene Amano?

He can play G or C and give us flexability, and looked like a solid player.

by Helmets on Jan 27, 2010 8:07 AM CST reply actions

The OL idea is good

Mankins and Mawae would help, but I would still debating whether we should just get our own guys and throw them on the field to develop and gain experience. I would move Rudy to RG instead of benching him. He’s a bad center, but still could play the guard position.

Fasano and White would be good additions and are players that SP will probably take a shot at. SP loves to p/u FA RB’s so we’ll see what happens.

I would love Breaston, but he is staying with AZ. They would be foolish to let him go and will probably trade Boldin to free up cap space for Dansby and Breaston. Stranger things have happened though.

by chief66 on Jan 27, 2010 8:49 AM CST reply actions

I say the Chiefs end up with one of those 3 Cardinals in the end lol

Breaston will be the least likely but I wouldnt be suprised with Boldin and Id almost be certain that if AZ lets Dansby walk he will be a Chief

by tomahawk44 on Jan 27, 2010 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't doubt it

A Chief trade for Boldin is a real possiblity. SP loves to get WR’s via trade or FA. Totally agree on Dansby. Both he and Fasano would make draft selections much easier for SP.

by chief66 on Jan 27, 2010 9:33 AM CST up reply actions

agree
I say the Chiefs end up with one of those 3 Cardinals in the end lol

Boldin or Dansby are possibilities for sure…

also, I say the Chiefs end up with at least one or two of these 4 Patriots in the end…

Ben Watson, Logan Mankins, Matt Light, Vince Wilfok

honestly, I could see Light and Wilfork (yes, I’ve heard all the arguments against them letting him go, but I think Pioli makes a move for him)

Yeah I see them throwing the tag on him and putting him up for the highest bidder.

I see KC giving up a 2nd for Wilfork..and maybe a 3rd for Boldin and a late round next season?

by tomahawk44 on Jan 27, 2010 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

Offensive Focus?

This post definintely focuses on the offensive. Personally, I see us focusing on defensive free agents more this year than offensive ones…

On offense, I think we’ll see the Chiefs bargaining for WRs or TEs in free agency. I see OL & RB being solved through the draft.

On defense, I see the Chiefs bargaining for NT & LB free agent help. I think we’ll go for a Safety in the draft.

Just my thoughts.

by Chief_Elmo on Jan 27, 2010 9:49 AM CST reply actions

I'll take:

QB:
Croyle – Resign, easy solution.

RB:
Chester Chester Chester Taylor - I think he would be the ultimate pickup to compliment JChar. Really high on this guy right now, I think it would be a HUGE loss for the Vikes. He would look great in Red and Gold.
Kevin Faulk - Dude is getting on in age but he would be a fantastic 3rd down guy. In my opinion Faulk has been the quiet weapon for the Patriots year in and year out. They keep trying to replace him with other backs but he always shows up and gets it done.

WR:
Breaston – Steve would be the best get but I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing a late pick go towards Boldin. Still would preffer to see Tate drafted but that is not the question.
Brad Smith – If he was cheap I would consider it. He could play WR and backup, so two birds with one stone. Good value but won’t be consistant at one position.

TE: (Any one of these guys)
Scheffler – My first choice for an impact TE. The guy can catch and make plays with the ball in his hands.
Watson – An obvious familiarity with the system and the management style. Seamless transition for this guy.

OL:
Sign them up.

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far is as needed?

Yep I'm crushing on Chester's play lately....

…really thing he would be a steal, perfect compliment to JChar. I would take Faulk if I couldn’t get Chester.

Brad Smith would be a nice pickup, not world changing but he does add that element of surprise.

very true.

I dont think the patriots would of been as good without him

You're a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It's the top spot, kid. It's the guy who takes the fall. It's the guy everybody's looking at first - the leader of a team - who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. 'Cause you make them believe. That's a quarterback.

I think OL is the key

A blended approach (at least one UFA starter, one early OL draft pick with potential to start, and at least one later pick for development) is the way I’d go on that front.

At QB, I think Cassel is decent enough for now. I think Croyle could be okay, but I’d like to bring in a cheap free agent or cut like Trent Edwards, or maybe draft a late-rounder like Crompton, with the intention of having someone push Croyle for the second-string snaps.

by burntorangehorn on Jan 27, 2010 11:17 AM CST reply actions

good thoughts

As much as I love the draft, you can’t count on starting more than 1 rookie.
Drafting OL for development is a must EVERY year

well???

I would really like to see Breaston and Dansby in a Chiefs uniform. Our offensive line should honestly be handled in the FA market. We need stability, reliability, and more than anything experience, Cassel’s gonna need better protection. We can get a project and or depth later on in the draft with the OL. Our defense i would love to see a McClain or even if he drops down that far Berry. McClain would be the best honest pick as a great need for our Chiefs. Bring back Croyle, bring back Chambers, and please bring back Vrabel, love the guy, plus has a tremendous amount of leadership and experience for the defense and any young LB coming in.

by Servando on Jan 27, 2010 1:07 PM CST reply actions

Lendale White

I don’t think he would be a good fit. I agree the chiefs need to a back to spell Jamal Charles but big backs would are going to run up the middle are not going to succeed with our offensive line. Charles was threat to score on the goal line and he is not the definition of a goal line back.
I am for drafting Sherron Collins playing him in goal line situation and letting that fat kid jump over the offensive line.

by Tyler Thigpen on Jan 27, 2010 8:02 PM CST reply actions

I was with you till that last sentence :)

but, yeah… this ZB scheme needs a decisive, quick RB that can cut on a dime and be versatile… being good at pass protection and as outlet receiver are key.

So, with that being said… Chester Taylor is option number one, if he were available.
A back like him is what this offense needs more than a “thumper”
